The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.

In order to provide insights for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. underground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the potential for spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas. A two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system was simulated. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were generated from a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. In this study the effect of methane emissions from the mined coal seam, including the longwall face and overlying rider seam reservoirs on the gob gas distribution was considered. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous combustion studies. Unsteady state simulations were conducted and the effects of the coal’s apparent activation energy and reaction surface area on the spontaneous heating process were also examined. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The Haile Gold Mine was the largest gold producer east of the Mississippi River prior to 1942. It is currently the only producing gold mine in the Southeastern United States. Current development involves the mining and heap leaching of some 1000 TPD. Carbon is employed as a recovery medium. Due to its clayey nature and excessive fines in the oxide ore, agglomeration using Portland cement is required prior to leaching. The ore ranges in screen size from two inches to -200 mesh. The agglomerating step combined with certain other conditions has enabled Piedmont Mining Company to achieve recoveries of 90%.

This study is a continuation of previous work designed to further explore the mechanism of the bioleaching of sulfide concentrate at neutral pH by heterotrophic bacteria Bacillus megaterium QM B1551. The concentrate contained 13.2 percent nickel (Ni) and 0.2 percent cobalt (Co), which presented primarily as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Contact and noncontact bioleaching experiments were conducted with finely ground ore at an initial pH of 6, resulting in 44.7 percent of Ni and 38.2 percent of Co leached in the contact-bioleaching treatment. Oxidation experiments of sulfur, thiosulfate (S2O32−) and ferrous ions (Fe2+) by cell membrane were performed to verify whether sulfur transferase, thiosulfate quinone reductase and enzyme cytochrome B558 on the surface of the bacteria could be expressed to oxidize the sulfide. The results show that thiosulfate quinone reductase and cytochrome B558 could be expressed to oxidize S2O32− and Fe2+ to SO42− and Fe3+, respectively.

In most open pit gold mines ore waste selection is based on estimates made from blasthole samples. These estimates frequently are biased. While it is true that high grades and "outliers" can induce a bias they may not be the only reason for the persistent bias seen at many mines. This paper focuses on a source of the conditional bias. In this paper it is shown that the poor blasthole sampling can cause a conditional bias in the estimates.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant has been investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of experiments was carried out at 75°C and the results were compared with the equilibrium consideration on the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia was considered at three different temperatures. It was found that by introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (r), iodine (12) and triiodide (13') is increased substantially which in turn helps the rate of dissolution of gold. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical controlled mechanism.

Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. Selectivity of cationic collectors for specific minerals is usually poor. Almost any of the oxide and silicate minerals may be floated using cationic collectors. The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the engineering development of three advanced physical coal cleaning technologies--selective agglomeration, advanced flotation, and advanced cycloning--capable of significantly reducing the pyritic-sulfur content of U. S. coals. The objective of this activity is to provide the coal production and electric-utility industries with a cost-effective option for addressing the SO2 emission reductions required by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. A secondary objective is to evaluate the potential of advanced coal cleaning for removing trace elements that are precursors to the formation of hazardous air pollutants. This paper will summarize the status of the three advanced physical coal cleaning engineering development projects.

Aqueous pressure oxidation at low temperature, although desirable from a process engineering and operations point of view, presents unique problems when temperatures approach 160°C (320°F). In developing the pressure oxidation process for the Lone Tree Mine, elemental sulfur formation and agglomeration with pyrite proved to be a problem. This paper discusses some of the unique features of the Lone Tree sulfide deposit and its amenability to low temperature oxidation. Problems encountered during pilot plant operation and their solutions are discussed.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for the expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant-panel apparatus was used to determine the materials’ relevant thermal characteristics: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass-loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1 and TP4, were derived from the data, then developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with the thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and support this approach as a simpler one for quantifying these combustible hazards. Resumen ¦ El objetivo de este estudio fue el desarrollo de un método a escala de laboratorio con el fin de clasificar los peligros de ignición y fuego de materiales comúnmente usados en minería subterránea y la eliminación las pruebas costosas y a gran escala que se realizan actualmente. Se usó un aparato de panel radiante con el fin de determinar las características térmicas relevantes de los materiales: tiempo de ignición, flujo de calor crítico para ignición, calor de gasificación y tasa de pérdida de masa. Se derivaron tres parámetros térmicos de los datos: TRP, TP1 y TP4, luego fueron desarrollados y subsecuentemente usados para clasificar los peligros combinados de ignición y fuego de materiales combustibles, de bajo riesgo a alto riesgo. Los resultados tuvieron una comparación favorable con los riesgo/peligro térmicos y de ignición de materiales similares reportados en la literatura y apoyan este enfoque como uno más simple para la cuantificación de estos riesgos combustibles"

Computer simulation models of working mines can be of great benefit to the mining engineer. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks/shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.), mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine and can easily be changed to reflect a wide variety of different situation. Often a major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. Using PROOF(R) animation it is now possible to interface the results of the simulation and project them onto a computer screen in cartoon fashion.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

Controlled blasting experiments in small development drifts were conducted at CANMET's Experimental Mine, from August 1992 to November 1993. The objective of these experiments was to develop suitable controlled blasting techniques for small development headings drilled by jackleg with 32 mm diameter holes. The experimentation also aimed to provide insight into blast damage mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the physical-mechanical properties of the rock and the rockmass structural data in order to make the results applicable to other geological environments. The drift faces were approximately 2.4 m by 2.4 m with 36 to 43 holes drilled to a depth of 2.4 m. Cartridged water gels, emulsions and semigelatin dynamite were used in the cuts and as primers, ANFO as the main explosive and decoupled 19 mm diameter semigelatin dynamite charges were used in the perimeter holes. Smooth blasting techniques and pre-splitting were tested in the underground mine. All the blasts were monitored with a multi-channel blast vibration monitor to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. This first set of experiments has illustrated the efficiency of con-trolled blasting techniques to reduce blast damage and demonstrated the need for further research to improve the safe and efficient use of explosives.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed onto clay surfaces or inner layers, or organically bound. Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis. Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2,300 ppm TREE. Using a laboratory flotation column to limit hydraulic entrainment, the TREE content was further enriched to around 4,700 ppm, which equated to an enrichment ratio of 10:1.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets and batteries (Binnemans et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015). REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal byproducts has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials.The average REE content of the world’s coal resources is around 60 to 70 ppm (Zhang et al., 2015). There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia with contents of 300 to 1,000 ppm, the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky in the United States with contents around 500 ppm and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, with contents of 72 to 483 ppm (Birk and White, 1991; Seredin, 1996; Hower, Ruppert and Eble, 1999; Blissett, Smalley and Rowson, 2014). The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal byproducts can be classified into three types: (1) rare earth minerals, such as monazite and xenotime, (2) ion-adsorbed REEs on clays and (3) REEs associated with organic matrices. The rare earth minerals in coal and coal byproducts are very small in particle size, generally on the micrometer and/or nanometer scales (Honaker et al., 2014). Froth flotation, which concentrates minerals based on surface chemistry differences, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime and bastnaesite (Abeidu, 1972; Cheng, Holtham and Tran, 1993; Pavez and Peres, 1994; Pavez, Brandao and Peres, 1996; Jordens et al., 2014). As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of rare earth minerals from coal and coal byproducts."
