It seems that mining has been in the doldrums for awhile. Except for gold, metals prices remain depressed. And economic conditions in the United States and around the globe have put governments in a financial bind. This affects new building and infra-structure repairs, which, in turn, have a major impact the building materials industry. Add to that the severe environmental and regulatory restrictions placed on the mining industry in developing new mines and expanding existing ones. It’s enough to make a mining engineer/geologist/metallurgist go sell real estate. So why do those employed in the mining industry stay in the business and remain optimistic? Many of them will say that they have been through down cycles before and know that an upswing is in the offing. They also know that society will always need the commodities they produce. And they love the challenge. The challenge in mining’s case is producing commodities as cheaply as possible, in an environmentally sound manner and improving the quality of life in the communities where they work.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

Potash was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1943 but its continuous extraction did not begin until 1962. In the years since then, potash has played an important role in the economic and political life of the province. And, as is well-known, the most eventful time in the life of the industry occurred in 1975 when the Government of Saskatchewan decided to become a major participant in potash production. To understand that decision, however, requires an understanding of the economic development of Saskatchewan and of relations between the industry and the government prior to 1975. This year, Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th year as a province. For most of those years, we have been an agrarian economy and society, dependent on exports of cereal grains, mostly wheat, for a livelihood. Even today, agriculture accounts for about 25% of the province's Gross Domestic Product (Economic Review, 1979, p. 7) and difficulties in agriculture spread rapidly to the rest of the provincial economy. The difficulties and risks that go hand in hand with being a "one crop" economy were known as long ago as 1920 but were not fully appreciated until the combination of depression and drought in the 1930's turned the prairie grain- belt into a dustbowl. Some idea of the severity of the depression is revealed by the following data: in 1928, Saskatchewan produced 321 million bushels of wheat. By 1931, the total fell to 132 million bushels and, in 1937, to a mere 37 million bushels. The value of agricultural products sold off farms fell from $273,000,000 in 1928 to a meagre $51,000,000 in 1937. The impact of such a fall of agricultural incomes was catastrophic since about 70% of the population of some 921,000 persons lived in rural, agriculture-dependent areas (Britnel.1, 1939, p. 14).

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.

Although many notable scientific investigations relating to roof control have been made, roof control still must be considered one of the more baffling problems confronting the miner. Each year contributions are made to our understanding and techniques in dealing with various single phases of the overall problem, however, an equation considering all the variables involved in roof control, if formulated, would indeed be hopelessly complex. Among the factors to be considered is first, gravity which is always acting but which is sometimes less of a problem than lateral forces. There are lateral forces due to expansion, resulting from the weight of overlying rock; to these must be added lateral stresses of orogenic or tectonic orgin, which may be enormous. Stresses due to plastic flow of beds, water pressure, gas pressure, expansion due to absorption of water, faults, joints, fractures, pot heads, and the like may complicate the solution. Therefore, we must base decisions on roof control, and roof bolting in particular, largely on experience, and far too often on few "knowns" and many "unknowns", The development of "in situ" roof trusses may prove of benefit because, they unlike roof bolting, promise positive calculable roof support. These trusses require installation of steel tensioned rods in the roof, which rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern similar to a bridge truss, the roof rock acting to transmit the compression forces. The simplest form of truss (see figure 1) consists merely of two steel rods anchored at the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45° over the pillars, collared near the the middle of the room, the lower ends of the rods being connected together by tierods and turnbuckles. Used in this way, a 3/4" diameter rod can offer greater support than a 10" x 5-3/4" wide flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckle, uplist on the roof can be produced,, the downward reaction being transmitted to the pillars by the rods. This simplest form of truss has been used in rooms up to 24' in width. Trusses of four panels, that is, consisting of a truss within a truss, as shown in figure 2, have been used successfully in rooms 30' wide. (figs 2 & 3) It appears a 6 panel truss could be used in a 40, wide room.

The status and outlook for mining, in your view. Minerals remain a major part of the world’s economic foundation. The fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends, but mining is no less important today on a global basis than it has been historically. Certainly, portions of the industry are critically depressed — domestic copper to name one area —but other sectors are prospering. Mineral consumption, both worldwide and in the United States, has increased steadily since the Great Depression, hitting all-time highs in 2000, the last year for which I have seen data. The highly developed economy in the United States tends to obscure the continuing importance of minerals here. But in less developed nations the critical nature of minerals is obvious and well accepted. In short, although there is no shortage of problems or challenges facing mining — there never has been — mining remains an essential business with great global opportunity.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)

A major concern of mine fires is the heat generated ventilation disturbances which can move products of combustion (POC) through unexpected passageways. Fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system to predict the state of the ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of temperatures and POC. Several computer models were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to perform this simulation. The most recent, MFIRE, simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influence such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output allows quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system. This paper describes recent USBM research to validate MFIRE's calculation of temperature distribution in an airway due to a mine fire, as temperatures are the most significant source of ventilation disturbances. Fire tests were conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM. From these experiments, temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire and compared with simulations from MFIRE.

Theoretical investigation and laboratory experimentation have shown a great potential for jet fan ventilation in mines. Jet fans, also called induction fans due to the induction effect of the fluid jet to ventilate headings, may have particular application in remote-controlled production operations. This paper summarizes ongoing research using a scaled laboratory model. The model uses water as a fluid medium and simulates a typical 25m long heading of 1.5mx6m cross-section. The effects of various nozzle positions and designs have been investigated by using still photography as a tool for flow visualization. It is also found that the use of jets in combination with line curtains has enhanced the overall ventilating effect in the model entry.

A characteristic common to most tailings dam failures caused by earthquakes or excessive rain storm is that the tailings tend to liquefy and flow for substantial distances as a viscous fluid, with the potential for extensive damage to property and life. Failures of El Cobre, Chile (1965), Mochikoshi, Japan (1978), Aberfan, Wales (19661, Buffalo Creek, West Virginia (1972) are examples of such catastrophic incidents. In these four incidents more than 400 lives were lost, and the loss of property was approximately $200 million. In order to be able to assess the potential for damage in case of such a failure, it is necessary to predict the possible extent of flow slide movement. This paper discusses simple procedures for performing such analyses. Also, in order to illustrate the use of these analysis procedures in tailings dam design, two case histories are analyzed.

There are many grinding schools in the mining world, which claim their grinding method to be the best possible - and still the methods concerned vary a great deal. Some of them have multi- stage crushing and only single stage grinding while in others crushing may be nominal, but grinding can be very complicated. - In this presentation firstly the nine most common comminution circuits will be analyzed. Then results from a pilot scale test series will be reviewed, in which nickel ore ground by four different comminution methods was fed to a common flotation treatment.

Attrition scrubbers may not be glamorous, but they are an important and sometimes neglected step in mineral processing. Optimal attritioning will significantly improve the results and efficiencies of subsequent processing steps and can lead to reduced costs and improved product yields. Why is attrition scrubbing used? Attrition means to wear away a surface, typically by friction or abrasion. An attrition scrubber does exactly this, using impellers to force particles against each other, causing intense scrubbing, grinding, abrasion and polishing. This process is not a new concept. It has long been used in the glass industry to remove surface contaminants from silica. But it is also widely used in many areas of mineral processing and other applications including soil remediation and plastics recycling. In mineral separation, for example, the scrubbers help improve yield and efficiencies by preparing feed materials for downstream processes such as flotation, magnetic or electrostatic separation. Inefficient scrubbing can lead to coatings remaining on valuable minerals and decreased yields, as the covered minerals cannot be processed efficiently or are mistaken as waste contaminates and removed. In the example of flotation separation, pre-flotation conditioning uses attrition scrubbers to provide better recovery of minerals while using fewer chemicals. If surface contaminants remain on the mineral, yield is reduced, as the unwanted coating acts as a barrier to the reactants, which make it unfloatable and, therefore, unrecoverable.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Introduction Potential applications that exploit the electrical properties of coal measure rocks include: (1) radar sensing of coal face, floor, and roof for automated mining operations; (2) underground wireless communications; and (3) sensing extent of subsidence, blasting operations, coal gasification bums, and moisture migrations. Impediments to exploitation of electrical properties include: (1) a lack of reliable electrical properties data for in situ conditions and (2) a lack of correlation data between electrical properties and other relevant physical properties. In this paper data are presented for electrical conductivity and permittivity for Appalachian and Illinois shales for a frequency range 2 x 10 to 2 x 10 Hz. These data are useful in establishing in situ electrical property variability, lower limits, and anisotropy. Electrical proper¬ties measurement and values for other coal measure rocks are discussed as well. Laboratory measurement For the frequency range investigated, a capacitance bridge and Q-meter were employed. These instruments are designed to yield bulk values of permittivity and conductivity. Disk samples of thickness 0.396 cm (0.156 in.) and diameter 2.54 cm (1 in.) were machined from cores obtained from the two coal basins. While both the capacitance bridge and the Q-meter must be balanced manually, the bridge has an analog-to-digital interface and an attached computer specifically designed to expedite data collection and interpretation. Sample holders are critical components in the measurement process. A Hartshom-Ward holder was employed with the bridge and a Marconi micrometer jig was used with the Q-meter. Neither commercial sample holder was designed to regulate ambient humidity conditions. Because water adsorbed on sample faces may cause errors approaching 100%, special enclosures were designed for both holders. Each enclosure contains a flush-mounted externally-manipulable carousel, an externally-manipulable rigid arm that can accomodate translational motion and three-dimensional rotation, a compartment for humidity regulating solids or liquids, and a humidity sensor. Each enclosure will accomodate several samples that can be manipulated within the enclosure without opening it. Experience gained during this research demonstrated that humidity regulation was necessary to obtain repeatable results. Grinding and polishing shale to a very thin thickness (about 0.4 mm) was shown to cause changes in electrical properties as well. These latter changes were attributed to alterations in the water content. Theoretical considerations A very comprehensive discussion of the electrical properties of sedimentary rocks is available in literature (Sen and Chew, 1983). These authors reviewed the work of others and proposed modifications to better explain the frequency dependent behavior of the permittivity and conductivity of rocks. A large portion of their article was devoted to explanations of large relative permittivities at low frequencies such as observed in this research. They noted that the electrical properties of formations containing shales and clays are the most difficult to explain. Sen and Chew noted the need for additional experimental data and further refinements in theory. Results Shales, limestones, and sandstones were examined for a single 150-m (492-ft) core from Pennsylvania and for a dark shale from a southern Illinois coal mine. The production of coal/water fuel (CWF), a highly loaded mixture of finely ground coal, water, and chemical additives, presents a unique opportunity for significant ash and sulfur reduction through physical coal cleaning. Froth flotation can be integrated with the staged, wet, fine grinding inherent in the CWF production process. A laboratory scale research program was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of a flexible, integrated coal cleaning/CWF process flowsheet. Performance of the conceptual flowsheet was examined for two coals of CWF commercial interest, Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh seam coals, from central and southwestern Pennsylvania, respectively. Several multi-stage coal flotation and reverse flotation circuits were evaluated. CWF was produced from the cleaned coal in each case at similar solids loadings and viscosities as observed for the raw coal. However, the ash loading and SO2 emission potential for each CWF had been significantly reduced.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cuft), tons (/T) (2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.76m3 1 cu ft =0.28m3 1st = 0.9 t7 1 acre = 0.40 ha or m2 In several cases the royalty is a percentage of the finished products, sale price and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. The dissolution kinetics of gold in iodide solutions with oxygen in an autoclave was investigated. The leaching process was described by a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reaction. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and concentration of lixiviants on the overall leaching rate was investigated. It was found that the dissolution of gold was limited by a heterogeneous chemical reaction. The apparent activation energy was measured to be 34.7-54.3 kJ/mol under the conditions studied. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the kinetic model proposed.

The increasing demand for large volumes of relatively low-cost cement has resulted in the need for an equally low-cost high-volume means for transporting that cement. It has been estimated that 20% - 25% of the total cost of cement to the buyer represents delivery expenses from the mills. For instance, during the 1972 cement shortage in the Southeastern region of the U. S., bid prices for a ton of cement delivered increased to $45 compared to $20 average at mill price, i. e. , F. O. B. plant. Much of the increase was caused by the anticipated higher cement shipping costs for longer hauling distance. The exceptionally high bid price, of course, was not the price quoted by the successful bidder. Thus, clearly, cement is not a marketable commodity unless it can be economically transported to the consumer.
