An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geostatistical-simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allow a procedure for classification that maximizes the expected profit. Geostatistical-simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally probable realizations of the mineral grades. At each location, for each realization one calculates the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste. The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a maximum profit selec¬tion or MPS procedure). In this paper, the authors discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, are considered. The authors also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. The paper shows the geostatistical-simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. The results of the proposed method are compared to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated field program over a 37-month period (April 1978 - May 1981). This project was part of a much larger study to determine the economic feasibility of expanding the open-pit, mine-mill operation 10-fold to 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd). The resource project included more than 120 km (74 miles) of core drilling and 64 km (40 miles) of drill rig access way construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, and other related activities. The Los Bronces deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. The mineralization is hosted by intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Various stages of erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper are present. Drill hole indicated geologic reserves are estimated at 1.3 Gt (1.4 billion st), averaging 0.81% copper and 0.016% molybdenum at a cutoff grade of 0.6% copper equivalence decreasing to 0.25% over the life of the mine. Trace amounts of silver are also present.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,300 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for the mining designs and operations in the Leeville underground mine.

It is well known that the major fractures and lineaments presently recorded in Western North America are preferentially oriented along a general northwest direction (Figure 1). There are other features, however, more subtle, more elusive as a rule and which can only be inferred, occurring at right angle to this broad NW direction. It is intended a) to examine some of these NE or transverse trends, b) to compare these regional NE breaks to similar ones that transversally cut through the eastern part of the European Tethys, more specifically in Iran and Turkey, and c) to study their potential relationship to mineralization in both areas.

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

The USSR, over the last 20 years, has continued to increase its out-put year by year and it is now almost four times what it was at the end of the Second World War. In 1975, it exceeded 700 million tons of run-oi-mine coal (all ranks) which amounts to over 20 percent of world output. This rapid progress has been due to modernization of the industry, by means of increased mechanization and automation and the development of new machines and systems for underground workings and by the expansion of open-pit workings and the development and implementation of larger earthmoving machines.

Two bench scale biochemical reactors (BCRs) were operated over a period of 3 months for the removal of uranium, radium, and selenium from mining influenced water (MIW). A BCR is an anaerobic reactor comprised of organic and inorganic substrate including woodchips, straw, sawdust, and limestone. Uranium and selenium are removed in a BCR by biological reduction of oxidized species (i.e., selenite, selenate) to less soluble forms (Pahler et al. 2007, Blumenstein et al. 2008, Rutkowski et al. 2013). It is believed that radium may be removed through absorption to the biomass in the BCR. The bench scale BCRs were constructed of 6 inch PVC columns with a top to bottom flow configuration. The bench influent water consisted of three different water ratios from two adit seeps. BCR hydraulic retention times of 24 to 36 hours were targeted during the study. Influent concentrations ranged from 19 ug/L to 1.86 mg/L for dissolved uranium, 12 ug/L to 270 ug/L for dissolved selenium, and 4.9 pCi/L to 24 pCi/L for radium 226. The average and maximum dissolved uranium removal was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively, the average and maximum dissolved selenium removal was 93.3% and 98.9% respectively, and the average and maximum radium 226 removal was 89.5% and 100% respectively.

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner's existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated cold-cutting alternatives to oxyacetylene torch cutting of metal. The alternatives examined were a pneumatic circular saw with an abrasive cutting wheel, a handheld abrasive water-jet cutting tool, an ultrathermic-cutting system, hydraulic punches and cutters, and a pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw. Sparks generated with the pneumatic circular saw or ultrathermic-cutting system were not completely eliminated with the use of water sprays. The water sprays also reduced the cutting rate of the pneumatic circular saw by 70%. The safety and performance of a handheld abrasive water jet cutting system requires additional research. The hydraulic cutters and punches are readily available and do not introduce any hazards. However, they are not comparable in price to the oxyacetylene gas torch and many different attachments would be needed to replace the torch. The pneumatic reciprocating hacksaw, which did not produce any sparks, is an acceptable alternative in terms of cutting rates. However, the price of the saw and blades is not comparable to that of the oxyacetylene gas torch. The results of this study will further the advancement of safe, efficient alternatives to oxyacetylene gas torches, which will improve miner safety.

In a recent National survey, Seattle topped the list for having the worst daily traffic congestion. To address this problem, Sound Transit is planning to build 40km (24 miles) of light rail, including ten kilometers (six miles) of twin tunnels with four subway stations 40 m (130 ft.) to 65 m (210 ft.) deep. The overall schedule is very aggressive and Sound Transit is preparing four separate heavy civil construction contracts for simultaneous underground construction. Three of these contracts are being considered for design-build. Final design will start in March2000 and all underground construction must be completed by the end of 2005.

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

Mining has been a significant component of the Appalachian economy for about 200 years. The region continues to be adversely affected by the environmental degradation associated with these past activities. In addition, companies today are being denied permits at sites where acid generation appears likely. And air emission limitations at power plants now threaten the economic health of many moderate- to high-sulfur coal mines. Thus, when considering the environmental impacts of mining coal in Appalachia, it is important to consider abandoned and active mine issues. For example, abandoned mines generate acidic, iron-rich waters that adversely affect more than 6,400 km (4,000 miles) of rivers and streams in Appalachia. In contrast, operations that were active after the enactment of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) cause little water pollution. However, the costs of water treatment at such sites exceed $1 million a day. Even where water quality is not dimished, water supplies can be affected by mining. Subsidence-induced fractures can lower water table elevations or drain a surface stream dry. Subsidence can also cause damage to surface and subsurface structures.

The Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at the Local Level (APELL) program is a process that helps people prevent, prepare for and respond appropriately to accidents and emergencies. APELL was developed by the United Nations Environment Program, in cooperation with industry groups, governments and local communities. Since its beginnings in1988, the program has been implemented in more than30 countries. APELL is a tool for bringing people together to allow effective communication about risks and emergency response. The program provides a common-sense approach to accident prevention and response.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials will be essential for successful lunar colonization. Several processes have been put forth to accomplish Lunar Liquid Oxygen (LLOX) generation. The schemes that have received the most study to date involve: 1) Reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, CO, CH4, CO-Cl2 and Cl2, plasma. 2) Molten silicate electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride fluxed. 3) Several others, including H, reduction of glass, carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reduction of ilmenite and molten silicate electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes and have various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at the onset of LLOX research. This paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen front lunar materials. There is an obvious need for more experimentation and study.

The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

Under a DOE-funded project, four advanced flotation technologies (the Jameson cell, the Outokumpu HG Tank Cell, an open column and a packed column) were evaluated at the benchscale to identify the technology or combination of technologies that best improved fine coal recovery and reduced processing costs. The results indicated that two-stage application of the Jameson and packed column cells provided the optimal performance. Subsequently, proof-of-concept scale testing was conducted at the Cyprus Emerald Coal Preparation Plant. The results confirmed that levelized production costs were lower using two-stage cleaning with the Jameson cell followed by the packed column.

Despite its importance in various diverse industries, research on beneficiation strategies of boron minerals has not received enough attention. Boron minerals are primarily upgraded by wet processing methods. However, severe environmental constrains have accelerated the development of dry processing techniques such as calcination. Interestingly, the boron minerals colemanite, ulexite and borax undergo decrepitation, shrinkage and expansion, respectively, upon heat treatment. Each mineral then requires a different beneficiation scheme. In this study, laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted in our laboratories on the calcination of boron minerals are briefly reviewed and their implications to commercial operations are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Two promising innovative tunnel support systems are being developed by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois. One of these is a lining which can be placed by a slipform located immediately behind and contiguous with a tunneling machine. Recent advancements in construction materials appear to provide the breakthrough required to make such a system feasible and practical. The lining material which permits this construction scheme is wire fiber reinforced concrete made with high, very early strength regulated-set cement. Parts I and II of this paper relate to this slipformed liner. Part I discusses the material and equipment required to install the liner. The "Extruded Liner System" (ELS) has been devised to place the lining. This ELS concept is briefly described and a tentative development program is outlined. In Part II, the physical properties and practical construction aspects of the liner material are discussed and a program for structural testing of 10-ft diameter prototype tunnel supports is presented. Part III contains descriptions of improvements to conventional steel-rib tunnel supports. It is shown that square tubular box sections are structurally superior to wide flange sections for complex loading conditions often encountered in rock tunnels. Analytical studies and tests on connections have been performed to evaluate their structural behavior. These are presented along with a program for comparative large-scale tests on horseshoe-shaped frames with a 10-foot span. This research is being conducted by the Department of Civil

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of a uranium mill site is principally an earth moving task. The task can be completed effectively and efficiently by selecting the proper earth moving equipment and using that equipment within its particular constraints for decontamination work. A considerable backlog of experience concerning earth moving equipment selection and use was acquired during the decontamination work conducted at the former Shiprock, New Mexico, uranium mill site. This experience was acquired by trial and error while decontaminating over a wide range of depths and different types of terrain. Many different types of excavation equipment were available to the Shiprock decontamination project because the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA) heavy equipment operator's school was doing the decontamination work and a variety of equipment was needed for training. The equipment is described and its general use for decontamination is discussed. Its on-the-job use for decontaminating the Shiprock millsite is presented. [EARTH MOVING/ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION AND DECONTAMINATION CONSTRAINTS] Tractor-Scrapers The most commonly used scraper is the bottom-dump type because it is highly mobile and can dig, carry, and spread loads. In this type a tractor is connected with a yoke to a scraper bowl (Figure 1). The bowl is essentially a rigid box that pivots around the rear axle, opening to the front. A hardened steel knife, or bit, is attached to the leading edge of the bowl. When scraping, the bit penetrates and forces the earth overlying the bit edge into the scraper bowl as the scraper moves forward. When the bowl is full, it is closed by lowering a closure or apron against the cutting bit. The load is dumped while moving, by raising the apron and forcing the load from the bowl with a crowd, or ejector. The height of the dumped load is controlled by adjusting the bit height when dumping. Scrapers of this type generally do not have enough power to scrape up loads unassisted. Loading assistance is generally provided by a crawler tractor that pushes from the rear against the scraper's push block. Some scrapers are made self-loading by adding an additional engine for the extra power needed for the load pick up. Another commonly used self-loading scraper uses a loading elevator (Figure 2). The elevator consists of two roller chains carrying crossbars. The elevator is rotated when scraping and the crossbars cut the earth above or in front of the bowl bit, forcing the load into the scraper bowl. No apron is used on elevating scrapers. The load is dumped by partially retracting the bowl floor and pushing with an ejector. Scrapers have some undesirable characteristics when used for decontamination work. With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.
