Rehabilitation work at the Cameron Run Tunnels entailed the restoration of seven heavily deformed, approximately 69 m long, steel liner plate supported culverts through a CSX Railroad embankment near Alexandria, Virginia. A custom fabricated expander, equipped with four 200-ton hydraulic jacks on two expansion arms was used to push back the liner plates encroaching into the proposed tunnel profile and install the steel set support. In a second phase the tunnels were then lined with 16 cm of fiber reinforced shotcrete. Geotechnical instruments both in the tunnels and on the railroad embankment were used to monitor the effects of the rehabilitation work on the two CSX Railroad tracks above the tunnels. Freight and passenger trains were required to run uninterrupted and at maximum speeds throughout construction.

Mining employment, gross output, local economic contributions and productivity are typical economic indicators. However, these economic indicators play a much bigger role in the overall capacity of the industry to be heard in decision-making on a national scale. Total mining employment in the USA has decreased significantly in the last 20 years. Gross output from most of the mining sectors has also declined, except in the case of construction aggregate. However, significant gains have been made in productivity. This paper explores these statistics and comments on their overall impact on academic institutions and political decision-making.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. In gassy coal mines, some methane drainage is essential for mine safety, but the ratio of total methane drained to total methane produced by the mine can vary from 10 to 70 percent. The volume of methane not captured is diluted by ventilation air and vented to the atmosphere. Since captured methane can be processed and sold, it makes sense to maximize methane drainage from coal mines. This paper describes ventilation and methane drainage schemes to achieve these goals.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. The proposed National Underground Science Laboratory will be housed in the former Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota. Uses will include underground neutrino experiments that must be shielded by several thousand feet of rock, as well as ground-water research in fracture-flow environments, and investigation of the microbiology of extreme environments. The Homestake Mine has about 300 miles of underground workings. Seepage of ground water into the mine openings is approximately 500 gallons per minute. Average annual precipitation in the northern Black Hills is approximately 28 inches per year. The majority of this becomes surface-water runoff or evapotranspiration, with little ground-water recharge because of the low permeability of the Precambrian rocks in the area. Dewatering of the workings over the 125 years of operation of the mine has influenced the subsurface hydrology of the 8,000-footdeep mine.

A novel low-cost technology is described that treats excavation waters in estuarine environments where water coloration due to humic material is present, along with acidity, turbidity, sediment and salinity. The process treats all the components in the water to produce a clear (color-free) water stream that meets requirements for direct discharge to local estuarine waterways.

The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. The polyolefins, mainly polyethylene and polypropylene particles, are used as an active filler material in polymer-polymer blends and are being used for the modification of asphalts to pro- vide for high-load, low-maintenance road construction. The stability of prepared blends depends on the interaction forces between polyolefinfiller and the matrix and/or between two polyolefin filler surfaces in the polymeric matrix. Various additives, especially surfactants, can be used to modify these interactions and improve the stability of polymer blends. In current research, direct force measurements between polyethylene (PE) surfaces in n-tetradecane, a nonaqueous solvent imitating the polymer matrix, were performed in the presence of lauric acid and dodecylamine using the AFM colloidal probe technique. Additionally, the zeta potential of polyethylene particles in the presence of surfactants in n-tetradecane was measured. The interac- tion forces between the polyethylene surfaces can be described as a combination of electrical double layer repulsion and steric repulsion between polymer chains extending into the n-tetradecane sol- vent. The addition of surfactant to the n-tetradecane was found to increase the repulsive force between the PE surfaces. The strongest repulsion was observed for dodecylamine. Additionally, the temperature efect on the interactions in n-tetradecane was studied. It was found that steric repulsion between the PE surfaces increases with an increase in temperature.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be a problem in the mining industry. New noise standards (Part 62) promulgated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in mining. Noise surveys, including full-shift worker noise exposure and equipment noise profiling, have been completed in several surface coal mines, with an emphasis on draglines. The results of these studies are reported, their implications concerning worker NIHL are addressed, and their application to administrative and engineering controls is discussed.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

Ground freezing was chosen as an initial support method during construction of two deep shafts at the Mill Creek project. The Mill Creek, Phase 2 tunnel (MCT-2) is utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from the member communities in the greater Cleveland area. The main objective of groundfreezing was to provide a strong support structure to resist soil and groundwater pressures. This was achieved by creating a watertight, frozen-ground barrier around the shaft perimeter. The paper will provide an overview of ground freezing techniques applied during the construction of two shafts, each 250-feet deep.

Asturias, in Northwestern Spain, has an extensive mining history. As a result of these historical mine activities where operations have been usually developed with little control on effluents or emissions (environmental regulation of mining activity has only been introduced recently), pollution has been severe in some areas, specially in Hg abandoned mine sites, which constitute one of the major environmental problems related to mining. In many of these sites, materials stocked in spoil heaps can be considered as hazardous wastes because of their chemistry, content on ecotoxic elements and potentiality to spread these to the environment. In the humid climatological conditions of the region, water and wind eroded spoils are dispersed through the environment by different pathways and occasionally surrounding soils and waters are intensively affected by pollution. According to the environmental risks that these unreclaimed mine sites suppose for human beings and ecosystems, remedial options must be considered.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

This paper discusses the process for making lightweight aggregate, the waste materials that make good lightweight aggregate, the chemistry of making lightweight aggregate and the commercial prospects for making lightweight aggregate from wastes. Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last 10 years. Many claylike materials, such as coal fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce commercially salable LWA.

The process of roof drilling and bolting is one of the most dangerous jobs in underground mining. In the United States, roof drilling and bolting results in about 1,000 accidents with injuries each year. Researchers, from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are studying the feasibility of using a drill-monitoring system to estimate the strength of successive layers of rock and assess the integrity of a mine roof. Such a system would allow roof drill operators to be warned when a weak layer is being drilled. Using measurements taken during drilling, a neural network can classify mine roof strata in terms of relative strength. The concept has been proven in principle. This research project was undertaken to increase the safety of underground miners, especially those involved in roof bolting. The system should be applicable to the mobile drills now used in underground mines, and the system would likely find wider application as well.
