World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

Design, development, factory test, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, and final machine configuration are reviewed. The AES is designed to overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.

The use of explosives in deep rock mining carries conventional blasting technology into a relatively new and unexplored realm. Although bill ions of pounds of explosives are used fairly routinely in mining, quarrying, and construction, almost all of these uses are surface blasting. Most of the in sib processes that are proposed for recovery of mineral or energy resources require the creation of high permeability to provide well defined flow paths in the resource bed. At present there is very little information on the fracturing produced by explosives deep in the earth, and the technology for using explosives in deep rock mining is just evolving. A qualitative understanding of the applicable mechanisms in deep rock fracture leads to some key parameters in the selection of explosives for deep rock mining. The selection and characterization process involves a careful analysis of the field environment and the establishment of tests to determine candidate explosives response to planned and accidental stimuli. The details of this selection and characterization process are given for a few candidate explosives. The use of explosives in deep rock mining must be considered as one of the possible tools for recovery of yet untrapped energy and mineral resources. A basic understanding of explosive deep rock fracture will allow optimum selection of explosive processes or other more appropriate methods for recovery of energy or minerals from a particular resource area. The results of some experimental studies are discussed.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

INTRODUCTION Mining activity and basic geometry of open pit mines represent major obstacles in geotechnical mapping. Mining creates a constantly changing topographic base which may require corresponding updates of field sheets before mapping can proceed. The rapid pace of mining operations may also threaten removal of important geologic and engineering features before adequate base maps and surveyed control can be established. Maintaining such control during the mapping process is yet another complication. In addition, basic geometry yields nearly vertical outcrops. Access required for direct observation and measurement, essential to conventional plane table or Brunton techniques, may be impossible on such surfaces. Also, nearly vertical surfaces appear fore- shortened in plan view. This reduction in area provides little room for recording geotechnical detail. The difficulties encountered in open pit mapping can be substantially reduced by utilizing a modified form of plane table photogrammetry. This technique employs photographs taken from the ground as the base upon which details are recorded. The information is later transferred to plan maps using the plane table principal of location by intersection (Davis and Foote, 1953). Any change in topography can be accommodated by simply taking additional photographs. Proper spatial representation in plan view can be determined later when updated maps and surveyed control are available. In addition, horizontal photographs from the ground portray vertical surfaces as they are normally viewed thus providing maximum area for recording details. Any detail which can be identified on the photograph can be located correctly even though the actual feature is physically inaccessible. The technique presented in this paper was developed by the author for special applications at Kennecott's Bingham operation in 1970. The procedure was rapidly adopted for general use and has proven to be a practical tool for detailed investigation of potentially unstable areas (Zavodni and McCarter, 1976) and routine geological mapping (Richardson, 1975). Major advantages, other than those mentioned above, include: The speed and accuracy are greater than for conventional plane table or Brunton methods. The photo- graph represents a view from a station at some distance from the area being mapped. This vantage point allows evaluation of possible continuity of structures from one level to another which may not be evident at close range. The need for a successful, efficient and reliable continuous face- haulage .system for use with continuous mining machines has been apparent since the first continuous miners were introduced some twenty-five years ago. Some thought and effort were given to the development of continuous haulage over the last twenty years or so. Some initial success was experienced in this area by The Long Company with a system involving bridge conveyors, as far back as the late 1950's. However, extensive success with continuous face haulage for use behind modern, high product¬ion, continuous miners escaped the industry until the early 1970's. It is true that continuous face haulage was successfully introduced into low seam mining, generally in seams ranging under 1.07 m (42") in height, in the 1960's, for use with relatively low production, low seam, auger type continuous miners. However, those available systems which have achieved success in the lower seams, where relatively low capacities are adequate, are not directly applicable for use with today's medium and high seam miners with their standard production capacity of 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm). Since the late 1960's and early 1970's, several machinery manufacturers, and at least two major coal companies, have devoted considerable expense, time and effort to developing truly successful continuous face haulage for use in coal seams ranging upward from 1.2 m (4') in height. Continuous face haulage equipment has been developed in the last five years employing a variety of transportation media and design concepts, including some which have received wide publicity such as those employing hydraulics, and pleated belt. The truth of the matter is, however, that the only universally applicable and widely successful continuous face haulage equipment introduced to date has been that employing a combination of bridge conveyors and mobile, self-propelled, bridge carriers, connected at the inby end to the tail of the high production continuous miner, and at the outby end attached directly to the panel conveyor (Fig. 1 & Fig. 2) or, on occasion, to a short, self-contained conveyor which, in turn, empties directly onto the panel conveyor. While these bridge type continuous haulage systems are available with both belt and chain conveyor components, the most widely applied and successful system in seams above 1.07 m (42") in height is that offered by The Long-Airdox Company. The standard unit for use with 9.1 - 10.9 mtpm (10 - 12 tpm) continuous miners is normally equipped with belt. However, they have built, and successfully applied, versions of this system employing chain conveyors, (Fig. 3), mainly for operators having extremely difficult mining conditions, including excessive amounts of water

Boliden Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, annually treats some 11-12 million tons of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. Its first flotation plant was established in the early thirties for the complex Boliden ore. Since then, the number of mines and plants has gradually increased. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low-grade ores. The development of concentration has mainly been directed toward the arts of grinding and flotation. During the forties and fifties, open-stage fine crushing followed by two-stage grinding in rod and ball mills with cyclone classification was successfully introduced and used throughout the plants. The increasing cost of grinding media led to studies of an autogenous grinding technique as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, with a. number of ores tested for pebble grinding. In 1956 a new pilot plant was built, with equipment installed for the continuous testing of pebble grinding and, later, for primary autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore. The intensive test work showed that pebble grinding was feasible in almost all of the plants. At this early stage of testing, however, the merits of autogenous grinding could not be fully evaluated. As a. consequence the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems were converted to rod mill/pebble mill systems whereever possible. The purpose of this paper is to describe the roles of cement and concrete in construction in general and, more specifically, as construction materials of the Southeast. For purpose of this discussion, the Southeast will include the geographic area composed. of the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In one sense, cement by itself is not a construction material. It is a finely ground manufactured mineral product, usually gray in color. Cement is mixed with water and sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other aggregate to form concrete, the rock-like substance that is the most widely used construction material in the world. Because cement is seldom used by itself for construction but is usually a component of concrete, there is no such thing. as a "cement" sidewalk, a "cement" highway, or "cement" building. Neither is "portland" a brand name. It is a generic term used to describe any cement that hardens in the presence of water and is made to standard specifications .. For all practical construction purposes, therefore, all cement is "portland." The name "port-land" was selected by the English inventor of the product in 1824 because concrete made with his product resembled natural building stone quarried on Portland, an English island. Although portland cement is not the final material which finds its way into completed construction, as the principal component of the most widely used construction material in the world, the location and process of its manufacture warrant some discussion

The testing of different kinds of process flow configurations and cell volumes in industrial scale flotation processes is in general difficult to accomplish and even expensive to perform.1 Also the lack of suitable measuring and analyzing devices often prevents effective comparison of results. Nowadays, the existing flotation processes contain, almost with exception, several return loads which result in difficult control of the process. There exist two good reasons for testing different kinds of flotation circuits at the Outokumpu Oy Kotalahti mine. Firstly it is easy to change the process flow configuration without any additional installation work and secondly, the concentrator is highly automated with magnetic flow meters, on-line analyzer and process computers. In this presentation, open circuit flotation is compared with the classical closed circuit flotation which contains return loads. In additional, the effectiveness of computer control in both cases is estimated and also the effect of cell volume on flotation results is examined.

The expanded role which coal has been assigned in the energy future of the United States has raised numerous policy questions. The very complexity of these questions makes them suitable to analysis by econometric models. However, as the Wall Street Journal indicated in its recent article, business' success with such models have been mixed. I have been asked to present my views as to how coal producers can use such models and in what ways the industry is likely to be impacted by such models. I do not presume to speak for the whole coal industry, but only to share with you the personal observations of one who has worked "both sides of the street", having been employed' both by government and a consulting firm prior to joining the coal industry. In my opinion, the use of econometric models to analyze the coal industry will impact the coal producers in two main ways. First, their use by government will have a profound impact on future government policies related to the mining, transportation and utilization of coal. Second, such models, when properly calibrated and refined, may become useful tools for the coal producers in doing market research and long-range planning. While the former has already begun to impact on the operating environment or the coal industry, the latter is still in the embryo stage.
