Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. The principal factor that must be determined for the effective design of a coal mine roof bolt support system is the maximum stable tension that can be developed with a given bolt assembly in a particular roof rock. There are four basic types of roof bolt anchorage techniques available: (I) the splitwedge; (2) mechanical expansion units; (3) resin point anchors or grouted expansion units; and (4) the cone shell which is placed in a reamed hole. A study of this problem has been made which includes theoretical analyses, laboratory experiments and field tests. A static free-body analysis of each of the anchorage techniques has provided formulas for predicting the anchorage capacity for a particular rock from the results of standard pull tests. The formulas also provide an insight into the anchorage mechanism of technique and allow for a comparative evaluation of the methods for design purposes. The theoretical analyses also indicate clearly the pertinent variables affecting the anchorage mechanism of each method.

INTRODUCTION The Carr Fork property is situated in the Bingham Mining District located on the east slope of the Oquirrh Mountain range in Utah. The mine is adjacent to and lies west of Kennecott's Bingham Pit some 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The Bingham Mining District contains one of the largest copper reserves on North America. Mineralization is associated with the Bingham stock which intruded through some 16,000 feet of sedimentary formations. Mineralization and a1teration zoning was developed radially from the Bingham stock with lower grade disseminated copper mineralization centrally located in the stock and adjoining quartzites. In addition, several garnetized limestone beds abutting the stock were also well mineralized. These skarns will be Carr Fork's initial mining target. Of the several limestone beds, only two, the Yampa and the Highland Boy have significant commercial interest at present. These beds which are 50 feet to 150 feet thick and are separated by 200 to 400 feet of quartzite were highly folded, thrusted and faulted, resulting in a dip variance from 20" to vertical. The predominant dip, however, is between 20" and 45" from horizontal. Quartzites surrounding the limestone beds were subjected to the same degree of tectonic activity with resultant intense fracturing and stress relief. The limestone beds which have a higher elastic modulus and which also experienced fracture healing during mineralization appear to have greater competency and strength than the quartzites. Four shafts nominally 3500 feet deep will provide access to the mine which will be a highly mechanized trackless operation, designed to produce 14,000 tons per hoisting day. First production is scheduled for the last quarter of 1979.

Resin bolting has enjoyed wide acceptance for coal mine roof support. Beginning in 1973, the first year of significant resin bolting in coal mines, we estimate that 2.5MM resin bolts were installed. This grew to 7MM resin bolts in 1974 and 13MM in 1975. Resin bolts are currently being used in over 300 coal mines throughout the major coal producing areas of the U.S. and barring major work stoppage we expect more than 17MM will be installed in 1976. Although not a cure-all, the number of unintentional roof falls occurring in many mines has been dramatically reduced as a result of converting to this "new" method of support. 1 The improved anchorage strength of resin bolts provides better roof support. (Slide #1) This anchorage strength provides a mechanism to resist changing roof stresses along the entire length of the fully grouted resin bolt, thereby assuring stabilization of rock strata over long periods of time. The ability to resist roof displacement is borne out by readings obtained from strain gauged bolts. These findings can be summarized as follows.2

It has been estimated that 30% of the United States coal reserves occur in the Western States at depths which would preclude exploitation by surface techniques. Much of this coal occurs in seams considerably thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country. Recognizing the lack of technology and experience in exploiting the thicker seam range the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is implementing a major "Mining System for Western Coal," research program which has as its ultimate objective the development and demonstration of underground mining methods and technology for extracting these seams. One investigation, being carried out by D'Appolonia Consulting engieers, under contract to the Bureau of Mines, is concerned with design of an entry system for longwall top slicing of thick western coal seams. This presentation presents an overview of some of the problems which have to be faced in designing such layouts.

Total suspended solids (TSS), generally referred to simply as sediment, is one of the four major parameters of water pollution associated with surface mining activities. The other three para¬meters are iron, manganese and pH. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of developing and implement¬ing effluent limitations for these pollutants pursuant to section 301 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, 33 USC 1811.1 To date, effluent guidelines for existing point sources have been published, and guidelines for new sources are forthcoming. The effluent limits which have already been developed for TSS have been subjected to some controversy.1 Some industry spokesmen have indicated that they may be unable to meet these effluent limitation guidelines for TSS. The industry claims that in certain areas the suggested limit is unattainable since high suspended solid loads already exist in streams due to numerous and various sources of nonpoint pollution which include agriculture, silviculture and urban construction for which no TSS effluent limits have been set. An opposite viewpoint asserts that the TSS limitations are too lenient since permit data from the Regions (U.S. EPA Regions) indicates present compliance for several companies under more stringent TSS limits. The experience at the Centralia mine in Washington is one example.2

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

As it becomes more and more apparent that our nation must place a great deal of reliance on coal as an energy source in the coming decades, prospecting for new reserves Un Missouri and other states in the Western Interior Region is increasing. As more and more of the known reserve becomes committed to existing or planned projects operators will be forced to look beyond the fringes of existing coal fields for additional reserves. Perplexing geologic problems invariably confront all prospectors and are particularly bothersome to those new to a particular area. It is the purpose of this paper to alert prospective operators to geologic problems likely to be encountered and to offer guidance in the recognition and solution of these problems. Particular emphasis is placed upon geologic structure and washouts. Other geologic problems have been discussed in a previous paper.

The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement - fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new, as exemplified by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1) (2) the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation’s Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since December of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the grout- rebar system.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. In the past three years there has been a great amount of attention given to phosphates world wide, and in particular to the Florida Phosphate Industry. I would like to relate some of the most recent history of the industry and give you a personal outlook for the future. Phosphate rock has been produced in Florida since its discovery on the Peace River in the 1880's. Through 1976, approximately 720 million ST of rock had been mined from Florida reserves, and it is my opinion that there are at least 1.2 billion tons remaining which are consolidated, accessible and can reasonably be expected to be permitted for mining. Over half the 1.2 billion tons will be deeper, more scattered, leaner and will produce lower grade rock than the Bone Valley of Central Florida has tradition-ally produced. In 1973, '74, '75 and '76 the Florida Phosphate Industry produced 32.6, 34.0, 38.2 and (38.0) (P) million ST of phosphate rock respectively. This rock was produced by ten mining companies, Agrico, Borden, Brewster Phosphates, Gardinier, Grace, IMC, Mobil, Occidental, Swift, and USS Agri-Chem; mines are located -17 in Polk County, one in Hillsborough County and two in Hamilton County, Florida. Phosphate rock is used by local companies in Florida primarily to produce phosphoric acid from which DAP and TSP is manufactured. Florida acid producers use about 15 million STPY in acid plants in Florida, and another 7.5 million STPY is consumed by acid producers in plants on and near the Mississippi River. Somewhat

Coal supply analysis has since about 1973 become a major activity of many scholars and consulting firms. The present paper is an effort to explain in as nontechnical fashion as possible the state of the art and what implications, if any, the research has for those actually engaged in producing coal or regulating the industry. l The discussion stresses the coal supply side of the models and makes limited comments about other elements in the analysis. To orient the appraisal, it is desirable to recall the features of coal supply that an adequate model should capture. The first considerations are the locational aspects of the industry. Transportation costs can, in some cases, exceed the production costs of coal, and thus any adequate model must incorporate a treatment of the economics of transporting coal from one location to another. A second major issue is that of the heterogeneity of coal; models should treat as well as possible such key differences among coals as their Btu and sulfur content. Third, we recognize that, with given technology and labor, capital, and supply costs, an expansion of the supply of a given type of coal in a specific region will occur only if prices rise. This is the familiar proposition of textbook economics that supply is an increasing function of price. Finally, over time, changes in technology, input cost, and depletion interact to cause changes in the price of given amounts of coal. Economics represents the net effect of this process by a shift over time in the supply curve. During the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to reduce the production costs of a given output; subsequently costs rose sharply.
