The functional design of a pavement relates to the selection of appropriate wearing course materials which optimise the trafficability of a pavement. Trafficability is dictated to a large degree by the choice, application and maintenance of locally available wearing course materials. Poor functional performance results in decreased safety and operational efficiency and increasing road and vehicle maintenance requirements. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of maintenance (watering, grading etc.) and thus maintenance itself can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. Since no wearing course material selection guidelines, tailored to the specific needs of surface mines, were available, there was the need to identify appropriate selection guidelines for the range of materials commonly encountered for road building on South African mines. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the functional design method for mine haul roads and, through an analysis and quantification of existing wearing course material performance, to recommend appropriate wearing course material selection guidelines. The functional design technique has been applied at a number of mines and is illustrated by an application case study which demonstrates the potential reduction in total transportation operating costs associated with the optimal functional design.

It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

Laboratory investigations were conducted to establish the feasibility of bioleaching a mixed copper oxide/sulphide rougher concentrate from Nchanga Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt. The objective was to determine the kinetics and extent of copper extraction for this material. Batch experiments were conducted under different solution conditions in stirred tank bioreactors. The progress of (bio)leaching was monitored through measurements of soluble ferrous and ferric iron, copper, pH, and redox potentials, while bacterial activity was monitored online through 02 and C02 gas utilization rates. About 20 per cent copper was solubilized within 2 hours in all cases of non-oxidative (abiotic), oxidative (abiotic), and bioleaching experiments. This was attributed to the dissolution of mainly copper oxides. Subsequently, bioleaching experiments resulted in an overall copper extraction of 93 per cent, with up to 8 g.L-1 copper after six leaching days, compared to 58 per cent copper extraction in the abiotic oxidative acid leaching experiments. However, there was little effect of time (i.e. poor dissolution kinetics) on copper recovery for abiotic non-oxidative acid leaching of the material. Hence, the rate of sulphide leaching increased due to the activity of bacteria. Thus, the material is potentially bioleachable under mesophilic conditions. However, more exhaustive test work needs to be conducted to establish the effect of bioleaching variables and heat requirement.

KingIn presenting his paper Dr W. J. Whiten outlined the basic concepts on which the control model was based and emphasized the fact that empirical models based as much as possible on theory were used to simulate each unit of the crushing plant. The final parameters of each model were computed using data collected from the plant. Unfortunately, the system did not permit accurate extrapolation but was successful when operating in the region from which the parameters were calculated.He concluded from the results of the test work that the crusher amperage was a critical parameter and that the utilization of the model gave a 15 per cent increase in the plant output. This was because the model predicted that a marginally fine grind would provide a significant increase in throughput. Dr Whiten elaborated on what constituted the multiple spline regression, explaining that it was a least-squares curve-fitting technique in one or more dimensions, where the calculation of coefficients in analytic expressions was replaced by the calculation of typical points on a very smooth curve called a spline function. The emphasis was placed on the shape and value of the curve or curves instead of on the coefficients as in analytic regression. A spline function was the line drawn between all points constituting the data set.Dr B. K. Loveday commented that the simulation was unusual in that the optimum throughput was considered to be the maximum throughput, which, surely, was limited by the crusher size. He also emphasized the importance of the interaction between both crushing and grinding circuits and added that in practice the optimum operating conditions were inter-dependent. Dr Whiten replied that in the case of the plant under consideration, the crushing process was not, in fact, the limiting operation.Mr C. E. Clifford indicated that the model was being used to simulate a number of crushing and grinding circuits at Mount Isa Mines. He reported that the model simulated the circuit satisfactorily for primary and secondary gap settings of 0,625 in. to 0,375 in., but that adjustment had to be made to the model parameters for gap settings of 0,250 in. to 0,125 in.In reply to a question from Dr D. M. Hawkins, Dr Whiten said that he preferred to use low-order splines with smaller segments rather than high-order spline functions with large segments."

Coalbrook Collieries has produced approximately 2 million tons of coal by retreat longwalling since April 1976. Strata control. support. stone intrusions. coal conveyance, and the inflow of goaf and water between the face supports have been the major operational problems experienced to date. The progressive percentage availability of the total system (moves between panels excluded) for the first three panels mined was 40 per cent. Satisfactory solutions have been evolved for these problems. and the availability in the present panel (fourth panel) has increased to approximately 60 per cent. It is envisaged that longwalling will become the most economical method of ensuring optimum heat values, greater recovery. and reduced geographic expansion. as well as safer roof conditions. at Coal brook.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

The feed to the BCL concentrator is made of the ore from Phikwe No3 shaft, Selebi shaft and Selebi North shaft. The receiving bin of the concentrator has daily throughput of 7869mt live capacity of ore with feed grade from underground operation of 0.70%Ni, 0.75% Cu and 0.05% Co. The valuable minerals in the ore are Pentlandite, Chalcopyrite. Cobalt is present mainly in the solid solution in pentlandite. The common non-sulphides minerals are Amphibolites, quartz, micas, and Feldspar while pyrite and pyrrhotite are the major gangue sulphides. Pyrrhotite contains between 0.1% and 1% Ni in solid solution. From the mineralogical investigation, it was found that approximately 65% of the pentlandite in the ore occurs as exsolutions in the pyrrhotite and the grain sizes ranges from 8 to 38µm. about 25% of the nickel bearing pentlandite is medium grained and subhedral. This kind of pentlandite occurs along the cracks of pyrrhotite or as inclusions in pyrrhotite. The rest of pentlandite present is disseminated in the gangue matrix. Because of the fine occurrence of pentlandite, fine grinding was conducted in order to improve the recovery as well as the concentrate quality. A series of subsequent flotation test were performed in order to evaluate grinds of 35, 40, 45, 50, 60 and 80% passing 75µm. It was observed that ? The mass pull increased together with increasing fineness of grind ? Similar nickel recoveries were obtained at 35 and 40% passing 75µm but from 50% and 60% the grind was seen to adversely affect the nickel recovery. At 80% passing 75µm the recovery increased by small amount. ? Flotation kinetics showed higher initial nickel recoveries but these did not translate into higher final recoveries. ? Grinding finer than 80% passing 75µm yield very high grades of the concentrate in the first minute of the flotation test, and the grade is dramatically reduced in the fifth minute of the test. It was concluded that the current grind of approximately 48% passing 75µm is close to the optimum and no significant benefit were found to be associated with finer primary grinds. "The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. Abstract A new approach is introduced for study of the behaviour of geotechnical strength parameter prior to slope analysis to ascertain whether strength parameters of slope materials are homogenous or heterogeneous at different mine depths. The strength parameters used for the study are uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and shear strength. The analysis is based on statistical analysis of variance technique for one-way classification. The application of the technique is given through a case study in an openpit mine. Changing mining conditions, legislative issues, rising costs, and the constrained supply of skills and electricity in South Africa, have been some of the criteria forcing mine operators and engineers to review the traditional use of compressed air to power underground hand-held drilling operations in narrow-stope, hard-rock mines. In answering the question, &apos;What is the best way to power this mine?&apos;, they have resorted to trade-off studies with results of limited usefulness, because they are site-specific, and use only a few comparative parameters, based on a small data set. This paper aims to provide definitive, objective, and quantitative decision-making approaches to evaluating alternative energy-delivery systems for stoping in narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on primary and relevant criteria. These include quantifiable criteria such as capital expenditure, operating costs, resulting financial returns, energy and water usage, production performance, life-of-mine, etc. Other important criteria with qualitative aspects are integrated. These are safety, health, and environmental concerns, legislative requirements, business risk, technology change, etc. The paper begins with a review of decision-making processes available, and proposes the use of the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method as a multiple-criteria decision-making tool and the decision tree based on milestone-driven uncertainties, to validate the selection of the energy delivery system. The results of a multiple-criteria questionnaire completed by a variety of industry experts and professionals, such as production and operation managers, consultants, suppliers, and techno-financial analysts, are discussed. The evaluation indicates the potential for hydropower to be the best solution for narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on current information, mine design layout and production.

A detailed fundamental study has been made of the various factors that influence the partial reactions comprising the electrochemical model of the cementation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc. The effects of cyanide concentration, pH, agitation, additions of lead, and the presence of various impurity ions on both the anodic dissolution of zinc and the cathodic reduction of gold have been investigated. The results are used to explain the influence of these variables on the rate of cementation, and possible implications of this work for plant practice are discussed.

"The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control, and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

This paper deals with the development of backfilling methods and systems at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province. Production started in 1979, being confined to large diameter blasthole stoping methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is now depleted and the production tonnage, 100000 tons per month, is produced from eight cut and fill stopes in the flatter dipping areas of the orebody. The fill methods of the blasthole stoping area evolved prior to the pillar extraction are briefly discussed together with the resulting experiences gained that enabled virtually 100% extraction to be achieved. The original cut and fill mining used costly hydraulic cemented fill; this was replaced partly by unconsolidated river sand and later by dune sand which occurs in abundance. The paper describes the planning, research work and commissioning of a cycloning plant that now enables dune sand to be used successfully as an unconsolidated hydraulic fill. The development of drainage, placement and control methods are also reviewed.

Composite rock mass failures involve intact rock material as well as fracture and shear on existing defects. Experiences from open-cut coalmining in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland are that failures of this nature occur suddenly with little warning, and are much more common than classical structurally controlled failures. Geological conditions and mining practices in the Bowen Basin are described. The circumstances of a sample of composite failures are described in detail in the paper. From this experience it appears that several aspects of conventional geotechnical investigation and design practice have not contributed significantly to either predicting or controlling the risks associated with sudden failures. These practices are described as myths for reasons outlined in the paper. On the other hand, the reality seems to be that high initial stresses and stress changes caused by excavation lead by a process of extensional deformation to a critical stress condition within the rock mass, and that sudden collapse follows when that critical stress condition can no longer be sustained. It is concluded that learnings gained from underground excavations in rock may be more applicable to open pit excavations than previously thought, and that the processes of prefailure deformation require more careful study if we are to develop more reliable risk management controls.
