The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

"The predominant current processes for the treatment of oxidized copper–cobalt ores use a reductive acid leach to bring the desired metals into solution. However, the indiscriminate nature of acid leaching results in a solution, akin to a metal soup, containing not only the Cu and Co but also an extensive suite of other metals. These other metals, notably Fe, Mn, Al, Ca, Mg and Si, all have to be eliminated from solution before the copper and cobalt can be recovered. Generally precipitation processes are used, but these tend to result in significant losses of copper and/or more usually cobalt from solution, leading to reduced recoveries. The AmmLeach® process uses ammonia-based chemistry to selectively leach the target metals, leaving the rest behind in the leach residue. This approach eliminates any need to clean the solution of unwanted metals and the consequent metal losses. After solid–liquid separation, the leach solution is immediately subjected to separation and concentration of the copper and cobalt using solvent extraction and electrowinning. INTRODUCTION The Copper Belt extends through the northern part of Zambia and the southern province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and contains the richest and highest grade deposits of copper and cobalt remaining in the world. Whilst there are a number of mines that produce sulphide concentrates, using froth flotation, the largest deposits are those where near-surface sulphides have been weathered over time to form oxides. The oxides cannot be concentrated by conventional physical means to give high recoveries. Despite this, a number of dense medium separation plants have been installed and used to produce a higher grade concentrate which is typically exported (while the rejects, typically 2 to 3% Cu are stockpiled for treatment at a later date). These plants generally have low recoveries and can only be used on the dwindling supply of high grade materials. In exporting the concentrate, little value adding is undertaken within the country, thus greatly reducing the economic benefits to the country. Recent changes to the regulations in the DRC will effectively ban the export of low value ores, concentrates and intermediates in favour of high value metals. This will necessitate mines to install new processing circuits in order to comply with these regulations. The head grade of ores currently being treated in the DRC is slowly decreasing as the extremely high grade materials are being selectively mined out. In many cases, the removal of a small volume of high grade materials leaves a much larger volume of economically marginal ore behind. This is due to a desire for short-term profits overtaking long-term prosperity. The remaining ore, which in many cases is still of relatively high value by world class standards, is likely to be only treatable by low cost heap leaching. There are some initial trials of heap leaching within the DRC, but implementation at a large scale has yet to be adopted."

The relationship between the aspect ratio and physical fields in aluminium reduction cells wase studied numerically. The aspect ratio was firstly defined and 7 kinds of 320 kA cells with different aspect ratios were put forward. By using numerical simulation, the relationship between the aspect ratio and the electric-magnetic flow fields, magnetohydrodynamic stabilities, and thermal stability was discussed. It is concluded that the electric-magnetic flow field distributions are greatly affected by the aspect ratio. From the perspective of magnetohydrodynamics stability, the larger the aspect ratio is, the more stable the cell will be. A larger aspect ratio is more beneficial for the thermal stability under the same current density.

An experimental rig has been constructed to produce chloride stress corrosion cracks in Type 304L stainless steel tube samples. The samples are to be used to test possible in situ repair methods in future work. The factor which influences the time to failure most strongly is the sample temperature; the distribution of cracks within the sample is affected by local temperature variations and by the position of the water line. Low-frequency oscillations in stress, caused by the on-off temperature controller, did not appear to influence cracking in these tests.

The evolution of thermodynamic models of molten salts and slags, starting with Temkin in 1948, has culminated in today?s sublattice models. These modern models have permitted the development of large thermodynamic databases of model parameters, which can be used to calculate and predict accurately the properties of multicomponent solutions. The model parameters are mainly obtained by the critical evaluation and optimization of available thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data for binary and ternary subsystems. The models are then used to estimate the properties of multi component slags and salts from these assessed binary and ternary parameters. When used in conjunction with thermodynamic databases for solids and solid solutions (salts, oxides, sulphides, metals, etc.), other liquid solutions (such as liquid metals),and gases, these databases permit the calculation of complex multiphase equilibria in multicomponent systems, with applications in a wide variety of industries. These calculations can be performed with general commercial software for Gibbs energy minimization, which can also be incorporated into process simulation software packages. New distribution functions are derived to describe the size distribution of grinding elements in ball mils. The formulations are based on the assumption that abrasive as well as impactive interactions occur during bal milling-an assumption that is supported by a large body of experimental evidence. It is shown that the functions can be used in the estimation of the magnitudes of abrasive and impactive components in the total rate of bal wear. The relative magnitudes of the wear components provide a basis for optimization of the chemical and metallurgical properties of the balls in a given milling situation. However, it is contended that these quantities are also useful indicators of the relative intensities of the abrasive and impactive interactions that are operative in the size reduction of mineral particles within ball mils. These quantities can be determined for any industrial ball mil, and their magnitudes provide practical guidelines for mil operation. The theory is used in an analysis of samples of ball charges from two industrial ball mils, and it is also applied to al the data on bal-size distributions found in the literature. The qualitative correlation between the calculated values of the wear components and the reported operating conditions is good for a variety of industrial ball mils, in conformity with the hypothesis that the relative magnitudes of the wear components are related to the milling conditions.

Introductory remarks by author When Mr R. C. J. Goode suggested preparation of a paper in the area of manpower utilization in South Africa, I was, while keen to accept his invitation, somewhat hesitant for two reasons. Firstly, I recognized the great difficulty of making a factual contribution, because of the lack of really relevant statistical information available, the fact that much of it is out of date, and the difficulty of researching and co-ordinating it and of evaluating a statistically sound resultant viewpoint. Experience in the actual preparation of this paper has done nothing to change my view in this respect. Secondly, it is obvious that a paper presented to a meeting of this Institute, by a member of it, would be expected to devote considerable attention to the subject in the mining industry. I am not directly employed by the mining industry, although my company has carried out extensive assignments for various sectors of it both in this country and in other parts of the world, since the 1939-45 war. I am more conscious than most of the tremendous technical and managerial skills at the disposal of the industry in this country, and consequently am equally conscious of the hazards of publishing facts and figures which might be taken to indicate any criticism of performance. I am aware that some of the information that I am about to present may indeed generate comment, and possibly even critical comment. I would like to be regarded therefore in presenting this information, as a member of the group, rather than an external critic. Under these circumstances, comment can only be constructive, and this is my earnest hope. The contribution of my paper, if contribution there is, will I hope be in the area of assessing labour productivity in mining, and in secondary industry in such a way that the performance of each against its own past results is comparable. This task has not for the present been to my knowledge attempted, and in advance I wish to take out authors' insurance against legitimate criticism from professional economists and others, by stating that I am well aware of possible short-comings in the arguments. Nevertheless I believe that under the circumstances I have, with the important assistance of several people, been able to take the subject further than has been the case in the past. Finally, I have related productivity in the mining industry and in secondary industry to a target of productivity in the Republic of South Africa. I was fortunate recently in being able to attend a series of lectures by a prominent economist in America. He introduced his subject by calling it 'A broad survey of macro-economics'. Perhaps I might be permitted to describe my paper, in the same idiom, as 'The macro-management of labour'.

This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

The Metsep Process for the separation and recovery of zinc, iron, and hydrochloric acid from spent pickle liquors by T. H. TUNLEY, B.Sc. (Ch em. Eng.) (Visitor), P. KOHLER (Visitor), and T. D. SAMPSON, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), B.Econ. (Visitor) A spray roaster has been installed in the Johannesburg area for the treatment of spent liquors from a variety of small pickling operations. A new process was developed for the processing of the liquor that is contaminated with zinc chloride, and a commercial plant was built incorporating this process. An ionexchange plant separates the zinc from the iron chloride, and a liquid-liquid-extraction plant converts the zinc chloride to zinc sulphate and recovers the hydrochloric acid.

The ever-increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard-rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in South African underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh as evaluation at Gold Fields' South Deep Gold mine situated some 45 km south-west of Johannesburg. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been specified as success criteria by Gold Fields: ? A 30% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ? The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ? No unravelling of the mesh when cut ? No failure of mesh under normal conditions ? Reliability of the MESHA® installation handler (availability >90% ? Compatibility of the MESHA® installation handler with AC 282 boomers. Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rockbolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst-prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where weld mesh or shotcrete are customarily used as a primary surface support.

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco represent more then ninety per cent of Zimbabwe?s ferrochrome smelting capacity, while Maranatha and Oliken contribute the difference. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.

Owing to their excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, Pt and its alloys are being used preferentially at elevated temperatures and in aggressive environments. For example, an important application field is the glass industry. Alongside the discovery of new potential application fields, the knowledge of material properties is essential for computer simulations, design configuration, process optimization, research and development or quality assurance purposes. Due to the importance for technical applications high-temperature properties have been investigated for currently available Pt-base alloys with ongoing improvements. For the determination of tensile creep test data up to 3000°C, including precise strain measurement, special experimental equipment has been developed at the University of Applied Sciences Jena, Germany. An overview of the existing and newly obtained mechanical property data on pure Pt, solid-solution strengthened Pt-Rh alloy, oxide dispersion-hardened materials Pt DPH and Pt 10%RhDPH as well as cutting-edge results on Pt-base superalloys hardened by intermetallic precipitates will be presented and discussed. Furthermore, some important application examples for the abovementioned Pt-materials will be given.

Application of magnetic separation was investigated for the enrichment of colemanite ores by removing the magnetic gangue fraction. The detailed XRD analysis of the ore has indicated that the gangue fraction is composed predominantly of the iron-bearing silicates such as smectite and, to a lesser extent, illite. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the colemanite and gangue samples have proved that colemanite is diamagnetic in character whereas gangue fraction is weakly paramagnetic to allow the removal of this fraction by magnetic separation. Magnetic separation of the crushed and sized ore samples (-5 mm +75 µm) was performed using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. Under the test conditions a colemanite concentrate (41.29 wt.% B2O3) was found to be produced from the crushed ore (30.76 wt.% B2O3) at a recovery of 96.76%. These findings suggest that magnetic separation has great potential as an alternative process for the production of a concentrate of commercially sufficient grade.

The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. The Institute revived a valuable tradition when, on the 19th of March, 1983, it held its first 'annual' banquet in some fifteen years. It was such a sparkling success that it is sure to be held more frequently in future. The success of the occasion was borne out by the fact that the main banqueting hall at the Wanderers Club was filled to capacity, with over four hundred members and guests.
