The production 01material liner than 75 µm in a number of open-circuit mills was investigated. The mils ranged from laboratory rod and ball mils treating a variety 01 ores to large industrial rod mils treating gold and copper ores. It was shown that the dependence on feed rate 01 the production 01 material liner than 751J.1T1 can be accurately described by a simple formula that was derived in previous work. In some 01 the systems reviewed, it proved possible to assess the feed rate 01 ore to the mil at which the rate 01 production 01 material finer than 75 µm can be maximized.

To evaluate the quantitative tunnel behavior influenced by characteristics of discontinuity, this pa-per executes the parametric study using 2 and 3-dimensional DEM analysis. First of all, this study finds that displacement and the stress of shortcrete are proportioned to frequency of joint and rockbolt axial force is adversely proportioned too. Secondly, it is found that the most sensitive in-put parameter used in Barton-Bandis(BB) model is residual friction angle. Finally, when joint sets are encountered at tunnel excavation face, to identify the most critical joint orientation is very crucial for a stability of tunnel. La thèse a pour but d’étudier les influences sur la stabilité du tunnel, au niveau du réseau de la discontinuité et de la valeur de sa nature aquis par le projet récemment exécuté en vue de mener à l’analyse quantitative de cette stabilité, en appliquant chaque différent paramètre comme la fréquence de diaclase, la constante de résistance des modèles de Barton-Bandis(BB) ainsi que la relation entre le sens d’excavation du tunnel et le réseau de diaclase en 3 dimensions. En fait, cette étude nous a montré que la fréquence de diaclase s’accroît proportionnellement au déplacement et à la contrainte du béton projeté. L’angle de friction résiduel s’est montré le plus sensible à la stabilité du tunnel parmi les modèles de BB. Aussi à travers l’analyse à 3 dimensions, il s’est vérifié que si l’angle de pente du groupe de diaclase est horizontal entre l’axe du tunnel et la direction, il donne une influence importante sur le comportement du tunnel. En particulier, l’influence était la plus importante sur un fond rocheux dont la diaclase horizontale est grande. Auch wird hier eine zweidimensionale Analyse von Ver-bindungen verschiedener Frequenzen in der Gesteinsmasse, eine sensitive Analyse von allen der im Barton-Bandis-Modell (BB) genutzten Parameter und eine Dreidimensional-Analyse mit ver-schiedenen dreidimensionalen geometrischen Veteilungen von Verbindungen ausgefuehrt. Erstens: Die Studie findet heraus, dass Vedraengung und Druck im Shortcrete proportional zur Frequenz von Verbindungen und Axialkraft der Steinbolzen antiproportinal ist. Zweitens: Es wird herausge-funden, dass die am meisten Sensitiven der im BB-Modell angewendeten Eingaben die am Ende uebriggebliebenen Reibungswinkel sind. Und schliesslich wird herausgefunden, dass wenn Ver-bindungsteile an der Tunnelaushoelungsoberflaeche ausgemacht werden, fuer die Tunnelstabiltaet die Identifikation der meist kritischen Verbindungsorientierung sehr bedeutungsvoll.

Design features of a deep-level shaft by D. H. HILLHOUSE. Pr. Eng.(Visitor)- and G. LANGE. Pr. Eng.(Fellow) Design and technical features of a large, deep shaft are described, and details of the sinking equipment are given. Special features in shaft steelwork, materials handling, and station layouts are described and illustrated. The details of the precast brattice wall are given, together with the reasons for the separation of all steelwork from the brattice wall. A newly developed device for the location of the shaft conveyances while loading or unloading at underground stations is briefly described and illustrated. The paper concludes with a summary showing the rates of progress and costs for the shaft-sinking operation.

Gold bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand consist predominantly of narrow tabular conglomerates with quartzite host rock. Extensive mining of these deposits at depth results in significant stresses being induced in the periphery of the tabular excavations. Where remnant pillars are created excessive stresses have resulted in the dynamic failure of the abutments. At the Hartebeestfontein Mine four brittle shear zones have recently been exposed and investigated. For most part, they represent abutment failure into the weaker hangingwall strata, striking parallel to the abutment, dipping towards the stope, with a sense of displacement consistent with closure of the stope from above. These shear zones are similar to those described in various publications by Ortlepp2: they are essentially brittle shear zones characterised by the presence of very finely comminuted ‘rock flour’ on an obviously freshly sheared surface. The angle between the shear zone wall and extension fractures indicate the sense of shear and the intersection of the extension fractures with the shear zone walls define a strong lineation normal to the direction of slip. It is suggested that these structures are referred to as ‘mining induced dynamic brittle shears’. Les gisements d’or du Witwatersrand consistent principalement de conglomérats tabulaires peu épais contenus dans une quartzite mère. Une exploitation poussée de ces gisements en profondeur a pour résultat l’apparition d’importantes contraintes induites à la périphérie des excavations tabulaires. Là où des piliers restants sont créés, des contraintes excessives ont eu pour résultat une rupture dynamique des appuis. Dans la Mine d’Hartebeestfontein, quatre zones fragiles de cisaillement ont été récemment exposées et étudiées. Dans la plupart des cas, elles représentent une rupture des appuis dans les strates moins solides de la paroi suspendue, orientée parallèlement à l’appui, inclinée en direction du chantier d’abattage avec une direction de mouvement consistante avec l’affaissement du toit de la galerie d’abattage. Ces zones de cisaillement sont similaires à celles décrites par Ortlepp2 dans diverses publications: Ce sont essentiellement des zones cisaillement fragiles caractérisées par la présence de « farine de roche » très finement réduite sur une surface évidemment fraîchement cisaillée. L’angle entre la paroi de la zone de cisaillement et les fractures de tension indiquent le sens du cisaillement et l’intersection des fractures de tension avec les parois de la zone de cisaillement définit une forte délinéation perpendiculaire à la direction du glissement. Il est suggéré que l’on se réfère à de telles structures comme des « cisaillements dynamiques fragiles induits par l‘exploitation ». Goldablagerungen im Witwatersrand bestehen überwiegend aus schmalen tabularen Konglomeraten mit Quarzitwirtgestein. Der umfangreiche Abbau dieser Ablagerungen in der Tiefe resultiert in signifikanten Drücken, die auf die Peripherie der tabularen Aushöhlungen wirken. Wo Restpfeiler hergestellt wurden, resultierten exzessive Drücke im dynamischen Versagen der Auflager. In der Hartebeestfontein Grube wurden kürzlich vier spröde Scherzonen freigelegt und untersucht. Zum größten Teil representieren sie Auflagerversagen im Stratum der schwächeren Stollenfirste, parallel zum Auflager verlaufend, in Richtung Abbaustelle abfallend, mit einem gewissen Grad an Verschiebung konsistent mit der Schliessung der Strosse von oben. Diese Scherzonen sind jenen ähnlich, die in den verschiedenen Publikationen von Ortlepp2 beschrieben werden: sie sind im Wesentlichen spröde Scherzonen, charakterisiert durch das Vorhandensein des sehr fein pulverisierten „Gesteinsmehls“ auf einer offensichtlich frisch abgescherten Oberfläche. Der Winkel zwischen der Scherzonenwand und den Bruchverlängerungen deutet die Richtung der Scherung an und die Kreuzung der Bruchverlängerungen mit der Abscherzone grenzt sich gegen eine starke Lineation normal zur Richtung der Lehne ab. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß diese Strukturen als `vom Abbau verursachte dynamisch spröde Scherungen’ bezeichnet werden.

An account is given of the procedures used by the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation (Iscor) for tests on the flotation of coal fines, and some of the beneficiation problems encountered with coal from Durnacol, Grootegeluk, and the Soutpansberg area are discussed. These, and other South African coals differ from overseas coals in that they contain a high percentage of fixed ash, which means that they have to be crushed more finely for liberation and that they then contain more fine material (smaller than 0,84 mm). In addition, the coal from the three areas mentioned occurs in fine layers and seams, and contains many intergrown particles.

Union Corporation are experimenting with a high-pressure water jet to remove blasted rock from short panels. The advantages are that the jet provides a highly efficient, flexible, and mobile cleaning tool that eliminates much of the lashing. Cost estimates show it to compare favourably with the existing system, with potential savings of 30 cents per ton milled. Equipment and method trials are continuing with the ultimate objective of eliminating hand lashing entirely while retaining the flexibility of the present method of mining.

"The valuation of diamond ferous deposits depends on (i) the density distribution, (ii) the size distribution of stones and (iii) the selling price structure prevailing at a particular time.In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the Dumber of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units.As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature.For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed.Combination of (i), (H) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamond ferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining.Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inference from sampling to recovery."

The shear stress t that can be sustained by the rock mass in the environs of a mining-induced earthquake controls the near-fault peak ground velocity v of that event according to v=0.25(ß/G)t, where ß is the shear wave speed and G is the modulus of rigidity. To estimate t at mining depths, I review the results of four studies involving Witwatersrand tremors that relate to the bulk shear strength. The first and most general analysis uses the common assumptions that the seismogenic crust is pervasively faulted, has hydrostatic pore pressure before mining, and an extensional stress state that is close to failure. Mining operations reduce the pore pressure to zero within the mine and redistribute the stresses such that, in localized regions, the state of stress is again at the point of failure. Laboratory friction experiments can be used to estimate t in the zero-pore-pressure regime. Second, model calculations of states of stress in the vicinity of mining at about 3 km depth indicated the shear stress available to cause faulting near the centre of a distribution of induced earthquakes. Third, laboratory experiments combined with microscopic analyses of fault gouge from the rupture zone of a mining-induced event provided an estimate of the average shear stress acting on the fault to cause this earthquake at a depth of 2 km. Fourth, moment tensors determined for mining-induced earthquakes usually show substantial implosive components, from which it is straightforward to estimate t. These four different analyses yield estimates of t that fall in the range 30to 61 MPa which implies that near-fault particle velocities could be as high as about 1.5 m/s. To the extent that the causative fault ruptures previously intact rock, both t and v, in localized regions, could be several times higher than 61 MPa and 1.5 m/s.

In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

The multi-reef area of Cooke 3 Shaft provides a unique mining challenge on account of the very thin middlings between the pay bands and the marginal values of the reef. It is uneconomic or impractical, because of the excessive heights, to mine the middlings using conventional stoping methods. The development of suitable mining methods is discussed with particular emphasis on the control of water inflow and the policy of not jeopardizing or sterilizing other reef horizons by the mining method implemented. No definite solution is currently available, but with the aid of instrumentation, computer analyses and mechanized mining equipment, the mine continues to attempt to maximize extraction and profits.

"In this investigation, we optimize the grinding circuit of a typical chromite beneficiation plant in India. The run-of-mine ore is reduced to a particle size of less than 1 mm in the comminution circuit and concentrated using gravity separation. The comminution circuit comprises two-stage crushing and single-stage grinding in a ball mill in closed-circuit with a highfrequency screen. A detailed circuit audit was undertaken at the plant to understand and evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. The audit revealed abnormalities in the process and design parameters which caused high energy consumption, lower throughput, and loss of ultrafine chromite. Laboratory studies indicated the differences in the grinding properties (work index, breakage rate, etc.) and liberation sizes of these ores. Studies also revealed that grinding media size, particle retention time, and pulp density are crucial in coarse grinding. Based on the laboratory grinding and characterization studies; simulation studies were performed to optimize the operating parameters of the grinding circuit.IntroductionComminution is a critical process in mineral processing which strongly influences the economics of production. In mineral processing, particles containing valuable minerals must be disintegrated at a sufficiently fine size to liberate valuable minerals from waste constituents, so that they can be easily separated by an appropriate beneficiation method. The Sukinda chrome ore beneficiation plant utilizes different types of run-of-mine (ROM) ore with different physical properties (viz. grindability characteristics, work index, mineral composition, liberation, chemical composition, etc. for the production of chrome concentrate. In the feed preparation circuit, the ROM ore is crushed and ground to below 1 mm. Grinding in the chromite beneficiation plant is a critical unit operation to achieve the desired product size of below 1 mm and to control the generation of the ultrafine particles. Furthermore, about 40% of total power consumption in the beneficiation plant is accounted for by the grinding of the ore. This implies that any improvement of the circuit performance will lead to an overall increase in productivity."

China?s engagement with the African continent has increased impressively in the past decade. Even though China is not the African continent?s largest stakeholder, the rapidly increasing engagement is evident in the huge number of Chinese migrants that have come to Africa in the wake of unprecedented trade and investment levels, as well as in increasing diplomatic and political interactions, which has taken most other commercial partners by surprise. All but four countries in Africa have adopted the ?One China?1 policy stance; and in so doing opened the door for new or strengthened commercial dealings with China, including increasing investments into Africa?s extractive industries. This has been particularly evident since the turn of the century, with a clear shift in China?s policy towards Africa elevating the continent in China?s foreign policy objectives. As such, Africa has become a strategic focus2 for Chinese outward bound and internationalizing companies, especially in the extractive industries. This planned shift in focus is based largely on geo-strategic and commercial needs and interests, rather than previous ideological ones.3

The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

Malmberget town is located in northern Sweden, approximately 70 km north of the Arctic Circle. Parts of the town overlie more than 20 iron orebodies, consisting mainly of magnetite with smaller quantities of haematite. The mine is operated by the mining company LKAB. Mining started in the 17th century, but not until the railway to the coastal city of Luleå was completed in 1888 did large-scale production commence. Around 1920, mining proceeded underground and today sublevel caving is the only mining method used. Sublevel caving causes subsidence of the ground surface, and buildings and residential areas have been relocated due to the mining activities for more than 50 years. The number of seismic events accompanied by strong ground vibrations is now increasing. In 2008 the mine received a permit from the Environmental Court of Sweden to increase production to 20 Mt of crude ore per year. A prerequisite for the permit was that the mine conducts a number of investigations regarding the environmental impact on the residents of Malmberget. One of these investigations concerned how seismicity will change as production increases and what measures could be taken to reduce inconvenience to the town residents. Today the mine possesses an extensive seismic monitoring system with more than 180 underground and surface geophones. For this study, eleven seismically active volumes in Malmberget mine were identified, and for each of them, a yearly future maximum magnitude interval was estimated based on the current production plan. Relationships between historical seismic events and measured ground vibrations in the town of Malmberget were established, and future ground vibrations caused by expected seismic events were estimated using a probabilistic approach. The outcome was the number of intervals of expected ground vibration per year and per monitoring point. Possible measures to reduce inconvenience for the town residents include blast restrictions, sequencing, and possibly preconditioning. The ultimate long-term solution is an almost complete relocation of Malmberget town. This process has recently been formalized and LKAB is taking an active part in realizing this goal.

"The ore deposits of the Zambian Copperbelt occur in sedimentary strata that have been subjected to relatively mild, flexure-type folding. Unrolling serves to reconstruct the original depositional geometry of the folded sedimentary strata and is in common usage on the Copperbelt both for geological analysis of drill hole data and in routine ore reserve estimation.A computerized method of unrolling was introduced at Roan Consolidated Mines in 1969 based on a standard contouring program. A contour map of the geological structure is drawn from a regular grid of elevations, interpolated from the original, irregularly-spaced intersections. Unrolling is performed across this grid, perpendicular to one or two axes specified by the geologist. Each intersection is unrolled independently, and the new co-ordinates are subsequently processed to produce unrolled maps.The technique has been used successfully at RCM over the last two years in both the estimation of ore reserves and exploration planning."

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. The history of development of analytical techniques for the determination of elastic behaviour around tabular excavations, is examined briefly. The design of a completely digital system, which appears to afford considerable improvements in speed, accuracy and versatility compared with existing analogue methods, is described in detail. The practical application of this system is illustrated by means of an actual underground problem. The results are presented, not in the form of specific solutions to the mine's problems, but as indications of the versatility and scope of the new method.
