The South African coal mining industry is currently disposing of about 10 million tons of ultra-fine coal (<150 µm) per year. Once discarded, these sulphur-containing ultra-fines contribute to several environmental problems. As part of a project initiated by the Water Research Commission to investigate the use of Cleaner Production (CP) in the mining industry, a study was carried out to determine whether a CP approach could be used to identify opportunities to reduce this coal waste, and to determine which of these opportunities would be most feasible. In order to do this, a CP assessment was conducted at three case study collieries in the South African Witbank coalfield. Mass-balancing and sampling, followed by laboratory characterisation tests and site surveys, were used to determine the quantity, quality and sources of the ultra-fine coal at the three collieries. Literature reviews, brainstorming sessions and interviews then followed to generate the CP options. An environ-mental, economic and technical feasibility assessment was then prepared for each option, to determine the most viable interventions for implementation. A number of opportunities were identified through the assessment. By preventing coarser coal from being discarded with the ultra-fine coal, the quantity of coal disposed of could be decreased at all three collieries, and by up to 24% in one case. Increasing the crusher top size would reduce the amount of coal that is milled to less than 150 µm, so that less is wasted. The ultra-fines that have already been disposed of on slurry dams can be completely reclaimed and converted into a valuable product, which can be sold as power station feedstock. The newly processed ultra-fines could be beneficiated using flotation and exported together with the coarser coal. The results of the assessments thus suggested that workable CP opportunities to reduce ultra-fine coal wastage exist at the sites investigated, and that their feasibility is colliery-specific. The associated financial benefits of the proposed options suggested that CP is a realistic approach to addressing environmental problems. Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was approached by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to present a paper on the current practice in terms of the valuation of mineral projects and properties, given the development of a Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, developed in Australia (the VALMIN Code), and a similar Code in Canada (the CIMVal Code).This paper is the result of research and investigation into the matter, in terms of the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves, financial reporting practice, the Listing Rules of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and various practices in valuation. The paper establishes that a strong linkage has already been established between the SAMREC Code for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves and the Listing Rules, and that, for completeness, a Code for Valuation needs to be developed. This Code will be similar to its international counterparts, with the necessary inclusions which are relevant to South Africa, and will provide guidelines and definitions on matters such as transparency, materiality and competency in valuation. It proposes that a multi-stakeholder steering committee be established under the auspices of the SAIMM, to deliberate and design a process for establishing such a Code.

Solving ventilation networks of natural splitting is a basic problem in mine ventilation. Several mathematical techniques are used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a new method which combines the advantages of both classical Hardy Cross method and unconstrained optimization techniques. The trials carried out on model networks have shown that the method offers some facilities in the analysis of mine ventilation networks. Plain and alloyed titanium aluminides of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al were prepared by melting commercial-purity titanium and aluminium with additions of 1 at.% precious metal. The as-cast alloys were subjected to potentiodynamic scans in 5, 15, and 25 wt% HCl aqueous solutions at room temperature and compared for their abilities to spontaneously passivate. Addition of precious metals resulted in a general improvement of corrosion resistance by increasing the open circuit potential to more noble values. Addition of 1 at.% gold or silver to titanium aluminide did not significantly increase the corrosion potential (Ecorr) above that of the plain titanium aluminide alloy, indicating that gold and silver are not sufficient cathodic modifiers to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium aluminide in all the solutions tested. However, platinum, palladium, and iridium additions shifted the corrosion potentials to the position of the passive region of plain TiAl for all solution concentrations. This indicated that TiAl alloyed with these platinum group metals would passivate spontaneously by cathodic modification. TiAl alloyed with palladium performed the best in 5 wt% HCl solution with the most positive corrosion potential. In 15 wt% HCl solution, alloys with platinum exhibited the most positive corrosion potentials, while alloying with iridium or palladium revealed more negative corrosion potentials. Thus, palladium alloying led to the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in low-concentration HCl solution, whereas platinum and iridium alloying additions resulted in the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in high-concentration HCl solutions.

The purpose of this project was to compare two underground, batch coal haulers ? battery haulers and shuttle cars ? in order to determine the more viable machine to implement. The specific standards for battery haulers were investigated and compared to the requirements of shuttle cars in order to identify the unnecessary expenses related to the legal requirements that are attached to the machines. Costs such as running costs, capital costs, and maintenance costs were researched and compared over a typical life of machine. Average production rates and breakdown times were obtained and used to determine which machine would be more reliable in achieving the required annual production.

This paper ,examines the kinetics of the extraction of uranium from acid sulphate solutions by strongbase anionexchange resins. Parameters such as the concentration of uranium in solution. the agitation of the resin beads in solution. the size of the resin beads. and the degree of cross-linking within the resin matrix were varied. and the effec ts on the kinetics are reported. The applicability, of various empirical kinetic models to the description of the data is assessed, and an attempt is made at the modelling of the rate data in terms of established theories about the diffusion of ions through films of stagnant liquid and through spherical beads of resin.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

A frequency distribution model plays a fundamental role in ore evaluation, especially for the feasibility study of new deep gold mines. The geological complexity of the reefs being mined at present in the Witwatersrand basin poses some difficulties regarding the modeling of the underlying ore-value distribution. This geological complexity has given rise to a need for more applicable distributional models. This paper places the geology of the Witwatersrand basin in perspective and draws some important conclusions from the genesis of the deposition. In addition to the three-parameter lognormal model, two more-general distributional models are proposed. These are the compound lognormal (CLD) and log-generalized inverse Gaussian (LN-GIG) distributions. A detailed, although preliminary, comparative study of these two more-general models with the three-parameter lognormal model is described, and the efficiencies of the estimates and modeling are analysed. It is found that the broad assumption that gold grades follow a three-parameter lognormal law is not always the case, and the need to test for departures from log normality should be emphasized so as to ensure the use of appropriate models.

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. Valuators of mineral properties are faced with a range of valuation methodologies, the most important of which are grouped under the headings of the market approach, the cost approach and the income approach. The way in which value is defined and the detail of the different valuation methodologies is examined here. This paper aims at documenting the variety of valuation procedures and applying each method to a variety of gold projects and comparing the outcomes. Any decision to apply a valuation technique will depend principally on the stage to which the project has been developed. The valuation approach to a greenfield project will be substantially different from that applied to a well-drilled, extensively explored mineral property. Furthermore, a valuation exercise may produce different outcomes for the same gold project depending on which method is applied. In order to investigate the variability in valuation methods and to explore the outcomes of different approaches, a series of five gold projects was analysed. The projects differ in regard to levels of capital application, infrastructural setting, depth below surface, in situ grade, and the stage of development, and were valued using the different methods. The most critical aspect of any valuation is the capacity of the valuer to identify the salient issues and ensure that they are incorporated into the valuation. The danger of simply applying ?black box? solutions to valuation problems without a full understanding of the parameters and the areas of uncertainty is emphasized. The importance of the valuator?s experience, insights into best practice and the ability to recognize and submit to the requirements of compliance within the minerals industry is among the most important characteristics of a valuer.

The flotation separation of apatite and calcium-bearing gangue minerals (dolomite and calcite) has always been a problem in phosphate ore mineral processing research. The crystal structure and surface properties of minerals have an important influence on their floatability. In this paper, the theoretical and comparative analysis of the crystal structure and surface electronic properties of apatite, dolomite and calcite were carried out using the first principle calculation based on density functional theory. As a supplement and validation, the surface wettability of three minerals under different flotation conditions were compared and analysed by contact angle test. The results theoretically revealed that the three calcium-bearing mineral surfaces have similar surface electronic properties and thus exhibit similar floatability. In the flotation process, the anion difference between apatite and carbonate gangue should be fully utilised, and the minerals can be separated only after surface modification by flotation reagent. The contact angle test shows that phosphate and carbonate can be separated by using anion flotation collector after surface modification with acid. It is expected that this research is of interest for understanding the surface structure and electronic properties of apatite and carbonate gangue minerals and providing the theoretical basis for surface interaction. For life-of-mine planning, as well as for short- and medium-term planning of grades and mine layouts, it is extremely important to have a clear understanding of the patterns followed by the distribution of gold and uranium within the mining area. This study is an attempt to reconcile the geostatistical approach to the determination of ore-shoot directions, via an analysis of the spatial distribution of gold and uranium values, with the sedimentological approach, which is based on the direct measurement of geological features. For the routine geostatistical estimation of ore reserves, the Hartebeestfontein gold mine was divided into 1I sections. In each of these sections, the ore-shoot directions were calculated for gold and uranium from the anisotropies disclosed by geostatistical variogram analyses. This study presents a comparison of these results with those obtained from direct geological measurements of paleo-current directions. The results suggest that geological and geostatistical studies could be of significant mutual benefit.

A comparison between hydraulic and pneumatic rockdrills by T. C. Marshall, Pr.Eng. (Member) The greatly increased output of rockdrills has placed new demands on booms, carriers, and drill steels and bits. Limited scope for further improvement in pneumatic rockdrills has led to the development of hydraulic rockdrills, which compare favourably with their pneumatic counterparts: they are more efficient, more flexible in coping with variations in the working conditions, more economical in the consumption of drill steel, and less productive of noise and mist. Their disadvantages include a greater need for a reliable power supply, a greater vulnerability to dirt, greater complexity (requiring more skilful maintenance), and the liberation of heat into the working environment. They should be regarded as a complement to, and not as a substitute for, pneumatic rockdrills.

The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.

It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica,-the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclone are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.
