The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

"In situ" measurements of the surface heat transfer coefficient in underground airways by K. R. VeST,* B.Se. (Glas.), M.Se. (N.S.W.) (Visitor) Few "in situ" measurements have been made of the surface heat transfer coefficient in mine airways despite the importance of this coefficient in determining the heat flow into the ventilating air. In this paper, the values obtained at various air velocities and the comparisons of these values with theoretical values are given. Examples are also given ofthe errors which would result if rock surface temperatures were obtained by extrapolation from temperatures further into the rock without taking into account the time delay which occurs before a given change in air temperature reaches the points from which extrapolation is carried out.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. In the last 20 years, In Line Inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigs has become the principal tool used by pipeline operators to assess the condition of their pipelines. New pipelines are normally designed to take intelligent pigs, but many older pipelines require some modifications and special procedures for their inspection. This paper is aimed at practicing engineers and managers of pipelines, or people aspiring to those positions. The paper describes the benefits of ILI and some of the practical issues regarding pipeline preparation and cleaning, choice of inspection tool, running pigs in pipelines, and what to do with the data collected. What are the responsibilities of the Pipeline Engineer ? ? Maintain reliable and acceptable performance of the pipeline in terms of safety and product delivery at economical cost. ? Provide a defined margin of safety for operating the pipeline at its designated pressure. ? Provide timely information on all pipeline defects such that repairs can be carried out according to a managed schedule. What Defects does the Pipeline Operator have to cope with ? A useful record of actual incidents seen in pipelines can be obtained from the web site of the US Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) - http://ops.dot.gov/stats/stats.htm. US pipeline Operators are obliged by Law to report all pipeline incidents exceeding certain threshold criteria (e.g loss of life, escape of product, cost of incident etc). These OPS statistics show that corrosion and third party damage have remained consistently the prime causes of reportable incidents in the US, with similar experience elsewhere. To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. "SynopsisThe most widely used support design damage criterion for rockburst-prone mines is based upon kinetic energy, which is proportional to the square of the ejection velocity and is commonly expressed in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). Field monitoring and back-analyses have shown that ejection velocities of the order of 10 m/s and higher can result from seismic events of moderate magnitude. Such velocities are much higher than those predicted using PPV obtained from scaling laws. It has also been found that the peak ground motion (i.e. PPV) on the surface of an excavation is preferentially amplified (by four- to tenfold) compared to the motion in solid rock at a similar distance from the source. However, the wave propagation and interaction processes involved within the fractured rock in generating high ground motion are very complex and are not well understood at this time.In this paper, velocity amplification was investigated by modelling the dynamic interaction between fractured rock and a free surface using a 2D discontinuum-based numerical program, UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code). A 1D model with a fractured zone was used to represent the fractured rock. Velocity amplification, quantified by PPV, predicted at the free end of the model was 2.0–3.6 times higher than the input velocity. It was found that the wave frequency, fracture stiffness, fracture spacing, and thickness of fractured zone are the main factors that affect the velocity amplification. The results have proved that the interaction of the seismic wave and multiple fractures near the free surface strongly influences the ground motion.IntroductionSince mining-induced seismicity is almost inevitable in deep mines, ground support is generally employed to mitigate the risk of seismically-induced damage. The most widely used support design criterion for seismicallyprone mines is one that seeks to maximize the absorption of the kinetic energy (plus potential energy if a gravity component is considered) of key rock blocks. Based on this criterion, design methods for rock support were first proposed by Wagner (1984) in South Africa and later improved, among others, by Roberts and Brummer (1988) and Kaiser et al. (1996)."

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a model that is used to simulate the motion of the media in a grinding mill. The sum of the energy that is lost in inter-media and media-wall collisions represents the power drawn by the mill. The fact that the DEM predicts the power drawn by grinding mills over a large range of diameters has been used to show the validity of the DEM. However, the power drawn by a mill is a function only of the sum of forces of the load on the shell liners. A more accurate and detailed validation of the DEM would be to measure these forces as a function of angular position as the liner moves under the load, and to compare these measurements with predictions generated using the DEM. An experimental mill has been developed to reproduce exactly what the 2-dimensional DEM simulates. The 0,55 m diameter mill has a length of 0,023 m, which is fractionally larger than the diameter of the media used in the mill. One of the lifters in the mill has been instrumented so that the forces on the lifter can be measured as the mill rotates. The DEM simulation will be used to predict these forces. This will give experimental evidence of the validity of the DEM for modelling load behaviour in rotating grinding mills.

Because geostatistics together with block modeling has not been studied in detail before in the rock mechanics, a two-year research program to investigate the practical use of geotechnical modeling was started in Finland in 1999. According to research work results block modeling gives good estimate of overall rock mass quality but it can not identify individual structures like faults and narrow weakness zones. Weakness zones and faults should be mapped from drill cores, surface mapping, geophysical methods etc. and manually generate 3-D structural model. Rock mechanical 3-D modeling can be used for preliminary stope dimensioning and preliminary reinforcement design. Detailed design needs rock quality mapping from drifts during excavation work. La géostatistique associée à la modélisation par blocs n'ayant pas été étudiée en détail jusqu'à présent dans la mécanique des roches, un programme de recherche sur deux ans visant à examiner l'utilisation pratique de la modélisation géotechnique a été lancé en Finlande en 1999. D'après les résultats des travaux de recherche, la modélisation par blocs donne une bonne estimation de la qualité générale de la masse rocheuse mais elle ne permet pas d'identifier les structures individuelles comme les failles et les zones géologiquement dégradées étroites. Ces zones et failles devraient être cartographiées à partir de carottes de sondages, d'une cartographie de surface, de méthodes géophysiques, etc. et générer manuellement un modèle de structure 3D. La modélisation mécanique des roches en 3D peut être utilisée pour un dimensionnement de la chambre et un plan d'armature préliminaires. Un plan détaillé nécessite l'élaboration d'une cartographie de la qualité des roches des galeries lors des travaux d'excavation. Da man früher Geostatik und Block-Modellieren in der Gebirgsmechanik nicht detailliert untersuchte, wurde 1999 in Finnland ein zweijähriges Untersuchungsprogramm in Angriff genommen. Aufgrund der Untersuchungsergebnisse ergibt das Block-Modellieren eine gute Beurteilung der gesamten Gebirgsmassenqualität, kann jedoch einzelne Strukturen wie Verwerfungen und kleine Schwachzonen nicht identifizieren. Schwachzonen und Verwerfungen müssen demnach aus Bohrkernen, oder mit Hilfe von Oberflächenkartierung, geophysischen Verfahren usw. ermittelt und danach ein 3-D-Strukturmodell manuell erstellt werden. Felsmechanisches 3-D-Modellieren ist für die vorbereitende Abbaudimensionierung und für die vorbereitende Bewehrungsplanung verwendbar. Ein detaillierter Entwurf benötigt die Kartierung der Gesteinsqualität aus den Gesteinsstrecken während der Ausbrucharbeiten.

There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.
