This paper describing the milling methods at the Hughesville concentrator of the St. Joseph Lead Co., Hughesville, Mont., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on practices at the various mills in the United States. Continued development of an especially impregnated silica gel capable of reversible chemical detection of carbon monoxide (CO) was reported. The affects of changes in mine-related ambient conditions on the detection catalyst's response were explored. Temperature, humidity, and several interfering gases were found to affect the detection catalyst. The interferents include hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, acetylene (and methylacetylene), and ammonia. High humidity decreased the detection catalyst's sensitivity to carbon monoxide for some formulations. Increasing temperature generally decreased the reaction time of the detection catalyst with carbon monoxide. Badges and carriers for the visual presentation of the detection catalyst were constructed. Several variations of these devices included provisions for absorbants and filtering agents which help protect the detection catalyst from gaseous interferents. A variety of catalyst support agents were tested in an effort to find the most suitable. Included were alumina, magnesium oxide, magnesium silicate, and several forms of silica gel. In addi tion to free-flowing forms of these sorbents, thin layer chromatography plates coated with cellulose, alumina, and silica gel and newly developed PTFE entrained silica gels were examined. A limited physical, chemical, and mechanistic characterization of the detection catalyst and the materials used to prepare it has been carried out. Metal component ratio studies, spectral, analytical, pH, and rate measurements were done.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1953 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the second time in this series of reports, data on some samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 32 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub-mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 19 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

Low-temperature carbonization product yields for 129 coals representative of 12 Utah coalfields were estimated, using regression equations developed from heating value and proximate and ultimate analysis data. It was shown that yields of char, tar plus light oil, water of decomposition, and gas, as well as the gas volume and the heating value of the gas, could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Published and experimental results from eight Utah coals carbonized at selected temperatures in the 4500 to 1,000° C range were used to determine the effect of temperature on product yields. Carbonization temperature, heating value) oxygen, and volatile matter of coal appear to be the principal variables influencing carbonization product yields. Data presented show that the heating value and the residual volatile matter in low-temperature char may be predicted using relationships developed from proximate analysis data for 220 coals.

In 1992, as part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Idaho Land Assessment Program, the Western Field Operations Center investigated the mineral resources of the 30,300-hectare Elk Summit study area. The area is in the Clearwater National Forest, adjoining the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho County. Idaho. The study area is underlain by granitic and metasedimentary rocks. Associated with these rocks are road metal (stone) resources, black sand mineral placer resources, and thermal water resources. Also present are abundant sand and gravel. Two of the five sites examined during the Bureau study have road metal (stone) resources, one has black sand mineral resources, one has thermal water resources. The fifth site is a black sand mineral placer occurrence. There is no evidence of petroleum or coal resources. Idaho County records indicate that 38 mining claims, mostly black-sand placer, have been located in the study area, Twenty-three of the claims are current. Workings consist of a few pits and trenches at the placer, and two borrow pits. The only mineral commodity produced from the area was about 1,500 tonnes of stone excavated from the Savage Pass and Swamp Creek borrow pits along the Elk Summit road, north of Hoodoo Lake. The stone was used to surface the road; these stone resources will continue to be used as needed.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals4/ and. investigations of their chemical and physical properties.5/ The coal represented by the sample from weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

A computer simulation has been developed to estimate the chances of a miner making a successful escape while wearing a SCSR. The model takes into account: (1) training in the use of SCSRs, (2) apparatus integrity, and (3) the oxygen cost of a mine escape. This Bureau of Mines report examines survival odds for a prototypical escape, and illustrates how these odds change when SCSR training is improved.

"INTRODUCTION Mine fires have occurred since underground mining of minerals began, and they are still occurring. The technical literature is replete with papers relating to mine fires.Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents require the collection and analyses of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the fire. Such atmos¬pheres are complex mixtures of gases (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23).3/SUMMARYExperiences at mine fires (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23) have proved conclusively that mine-air analyses furnish the only means of judging what is going on in a mine fire area. Mine-air analyses give evidence of conditions that require immediate protection, govern the order and control the manner in which a fire is fought, show the necessity of bulkheads and establish the places to construct them, indicate whether or not a fire is being controlled or is being extinguished, and govern procedure in sealing and unsealing mine fires.It is commonly believed that danger to life and property from mine-fire atmospheres is greatest in coal mines; this is true only to the degree that the explosion hazard is greater in coal mines than in noncoal mines because of the presence of combustible gases. The problem of gas poisoning is greater in noncoal mines because of the more frequent occurrence of poisonous and innocuous gases, oftentimes the lack of controlled ventilation, and usually greater difficulties in sealing mine-fire areas. Sulfide minerals present a serious hazard in many metal-mine fires when sulfur dioxide is formed. The country rock or ore body itself may contain or be limestone, which may be calcined. Emanations of carbon dioxide are found."

As part of the Nation's growing concern with the competitiveness of U.S. firms in the world economy, especially with respect to advanced materials, the Bureau of Mines assessed the actual and potential recovery and manufacturing capabilities for gallium and gallium arsenide (Gacis). GaAs has advanced from a laboratory curiosity to a material with important "high-tech applications within only the last few years, and although protected North American gallium supplies are currently considered adequate, consumption could grow to the point that this assessment would need reevaluation.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, mine and mill cost models are presented to make quick estimates of the cost to develop mineral deposits in the desert region of the Southwest United States. Regression analysis was used to generate capital and operating cost equations for each model in the form Y = AXB, where Y is the cost estimated and X is the assumed daily capacity in short tons. A and B are constants determined by the regression analysis. Each is broken down into 11 subcategories to facilitate escalation of costs for inflation and to increase their versatility in economic evaluation work. This report contains 2 open pit models, 6 underground mine models, 11 mill models, and cost equations for access roads, powerlines, and tailings ponds. In addition, adjustment factors for variation in haulage distances are provided for open pit models and variation in mining depths for underground models.

The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. "INTRODUCTION As part of its work in promoting safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means of eliminating or mitigating the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explosibility of many complex gaseous mixtures may be calculated in a rather simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiments. An earlier publication 3/ described the method of determining by calculation the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen. The information published in the above report permitted calculation of the limits of inflamnability of such gases as are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust gases, gases present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases of similar type.Gases liberated in certain potash mines in the western part of the United States sometimes contain ethane, in addition to the gases named. An investigation was made to obtain data from which the limits of inflammability of such gaseous mixtures could be determined by calculation. 4/Similar data have been Published covering all types of natural gases containing wide ranges of concentration of nitrogen and carbon dioxide.5/"

8. Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. During the second quarter of 1983, the economic recovery showed further strength abetted by the performances of consumer spending, residential investment, and the slowing down of inventory reductions. Real gross national product (GNP) increased from the first to second quarter at an annual rate of 9.2 percent, compared with 2.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 1982 to the first quarter of 1983 and an overall 1.9- percent decrease in 1982. Total industrial production increased 1.8 percent in July, and productivity as measured by output per man-hour increased 1.3 percent between 1982 and the first quarter of 1983 (table 1). Especially noteworthy .was the performance of real consumer durable goods expenditures, which increased at an annual rate of 32.0 percent from the first to the second quarter (about half of the increase consisted of automobile sales) and real consumer spending, which increased between these periods at an annual rate of 9.7 percent. Residential investment increased at an annual rate of 76.1 percent between the first and the second quarters,1/ and private housing starts by about 38,000 units in both March and May.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents short-range projections of domestic liquid hydrocarbon production through 1980. Appraisal of future crude oil production was made by evaluating the relationship between primary and enhanced oil recovery and the total crude oil producing trends in each of the oil-producing areas of the United States. Future natural gas liquid production was generally estimated by projecting historical production. Estimates of production were prepared for each of the oil producing areas and summarized for the Petroleum Administration for Defense (PAD) districts and total United States. From 1975 to 1980, crude oil production for the conterminous United States is expected to decline from 7.8 to 6.4 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD), and it is expected to increase from 8.0 to 8.2 million BOPD for the total United States. However, these estimates do not include additional production expected from the Elk Hills field in California and the Yates field in Texas. If included, 1980 production for the conterminous United States would be 6.7 million BOPD and 8.4 million BOPD for the total United States.

Explicit expressions are presented for the input admittance and effective height of several buried metal antennas, namely: (i) prolate spheroidal; (ii) spherical; (iii) oblate spheroidal; (iv) parallel plate; (v) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in the same plane of the plates; (vi) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in a plane normal to that of the plates (H-shaped antenna). Explicit expressions are presented for the input admittance and effective height of several buried metal antennas, namely: (i) prolate spheroidal; (ii) spherical; (iii) oblate spheroidal; (iv) parallel plate; (v) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in the same plane of the plates; (vi) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in a plane normal to that of the plates (H-shaped antenna). It is concluded that in all practical situations of "small" antennas approximation 1 is almost always appropriate. Computations were carried out for bare antennas, the extension to insulated ones being, however, straightforward. Although a rigorous theory of the antenna performance in a realistic semi-infinite conductive medium has not been developed, the results quoted should also be applicable when antennas are a few skin depths below the earth's surface. In particular, for the evaluation of radio-links under up-over -and-down operating conditions, the antennas can be replaced by dipoles of length equal to the effective height. Since the antenna's parameters are given in analytical form, it is also possible, by using Laplace transform techniques, to compute the transient response of the antenna. The transient is described by pole (short-time behavior) and branch-cut contributions (large time behavior). For these last terms, an asymptotic evaluation is possible, so obtaining closed form expressions for the response at large observation times, which is closely related to the dispersion characteristic of the environment.

The Ecuadorean mineral sector and overall economy have retained their traditional dependence upon the production and export of hydrocarbon products. Exports of crude oil and its products accounted for 62% of the country's export earnings in 1985. Ecuador's major mineral commodities produced and exported were cement, gold, limestone, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, natural gasoline, crude petroleum and condensate, raw steel, semimanufactured steel products, and sulfur.

Provide guidance on the selection of millisecond initiator delays between blastholes in surface mine blasting to provide a desired degree of rock fragmentation consistent with safety and vibration considerations. The Problem Blasting remains the primary means of fragmenting, rock for all kinds of mining, quarrying, construction, and excavation activities, and it is the only practical and economic method of breaking up and moving large amounts of material such as coal overburden and stone aggregate. Because of the large amount of blasting done, typically using 4 billion pounds of explosive to break about 8 billion tons of rock annually in the United States, a small improvement in blasting performance will have a significant productivity impact. Standard blasting practices involve the selection of time delays in a blast for at [cast three purposes: (1) to control energy flow to minimize adverse vibrations, (2) to provide sufficient time relief for good rock displacement, appropriate muck pile shape for digging, and the prevention of collar violence, misfires, and flyrock, and (3) to provide an appropriate amount of interhole stress wave and gas pressure action for a desired fragmentation size distribution. Timing guidelines that exist are based on subjective observations rather than measurements, even for the relatively new casting methods. Until this Bureau study, no definitive analysis had been done to quantify the fragmentation and productivity of full-scale blast rounds as functions of precision delay timing.
