This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the status of a laser-based guidance system to provide position and heading feedback and closed-loop control of tramming maneuvers for a continuous mining machine. The system has been developed and tested at the Bureau, and is now being prepared for underground experiments. The system hardware includes laser scanners, a sensor communication network, and host computer hardware. The system software includes a position and heading computation module and a tram control module. The description of the software includes discussions of laser data acquisition, error compensation methods, position and heading determination, safety checking for continuous miner tramming, and closed-loop tram control. The accuracy of the laser scanner's data, the reliability of the lasers in a dusty environment, and the system's accuracy on tracking the position and heading of the continuous mining machine are shown in the results of experiments performed at the Bureau. Conclusions are stated based on these experimental results, and further work to improve the system performance and prepare for underground testing is discussed.

The effect of low percentages of methane (0 to 5 pet.) in an air atmosphere on spark initiated explosions of coal dust was investigated. With low dust concentrations (0.1 to 0.4 oz./cu, ft.), small amounts of methane increase the explosion pressure; with larger dust concentrations (0.5 to 2.0 oz./cu. ft.), small amounts of methane decrease the explosion pressure. The rate of pressure rise of a coal dust explosion increases with increase in methane concentration; about 3 to 4 pct. further addition of methane yields a decrease in the rate of pressure rise. Convection currents created by the air or gas blast used to disperse dust produce an increase in explosion pressure and rate of pressure rise. The minimum explosive concentration of the coal dust decreases about linearly as the concentration of methane increases from 0 to 5 pct. The explosion pressure increases linearly as the initial pressure within the chamber increases. Similarities between coal dust and methane explosions are indicated, INTRODUCTION During coal mining, methane occluded in coal or adjoining strata is liberated into the mine atmosphere,4 Normally, the methane is diluted and swept away by the ventilating air. Under some conditions, through accidental disruption of the ventilation system, sudden outburst, or because insufficient fresh air is supplied to a working place, low percentages of methane may be present during mining operations. If it is permitted to accumulate, methane itself presents an explosion hazard; its limits of explosibility arc approximately 5 and 15 pct. "At the request of Philip S. Hoyt, the Eagle Mountain fluorspar deposits in section 35, block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, were examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines during March 1943: As a result of this examination; a preliminary program of trenching, sampling and core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was begun in. June 1943.4/ Eight deposits were explored.The Federal Geological Survey mapped the properties and furnished geologic information throughout the program, while the Texas .Bureau of Economic Geology6/ made preliminary maps that facilitated planning the exploratory work on section 35.The eight deposits explored by the Bureau of Mines are in block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, Hudspeth County, Tex., approximately 7-1/2 miles south of. Hot Wells and 12-1/2 miles south of Allamoore, which is 10 miles west of Van Horn and 20 miles east of Gierra Blanco on U. S. Highway 80(fig. 1). A graded gravel road, built by the Public Roads Administration, leads from Hot Wells to the deposits in section 35, and there are unimproved roads, passable,by automobile, to all the other deposits.Carload shipments can be made to and from Hot Wells on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and complete railroad facilities are available at Allamoore on the Texas & Pacific Railroad.Van Horn and Sierra Blanca are the only local source of labor and. supplies. The prevailing wage for common labor is 60 cents an hour. Living accommodations are obtainable in Horn and Sierra Blanca.No electric power lines pass near the deposits. Diesel and gasoline motors are employed to furnish power for mining and milling operations.Two recently 'drilled water wells on section 35 furnish water for the mill. Other wells will be drilled if the present supply is inadequate for prolonged Peak operation.The properties lie in the foothills on the northeast side of the Eagle Mountains at 5,500 feet altitude. The Eagle Mountain Range rises sharply from a broad, flat valley known as Eagle Flat. Eagle Peak, the highest in the range, has an altitude of 7,510 feet. In the vicinity of the fluorspar deposits the topography is moderately reliefs ranging from 50 to 300 feet."

MFIRE, written in Fortran 77, is a computer program for ventilation state simulation in the steady state or transient state condition. It can be applied for the calculation of normal ventilation system planning or the analysis of the dynamic state variation in a ventilation system under thermal or mechanical disturbance. The state simulator MFIRE is a useful tool for mine fire fighting. In the case of a mine fire, mine ventilation engineers want to get some help to obtain more information, such as what is happening in the underground mine and how to control the mine fire, for correct decision making. By use of program MF'IRE, forecasts can be made on the variation of airflow, temperature, and contaminant distribution in a ventilation system during a mine fire. The paths which the contaminant takes at each time interval can be traced. The program MFIRE can be of assistance in the preplanning of escape routes. It can also be helpful during a mine fire emergency and mine recovery operation. Besides of offering the information of state simulation during a mine fire, MFIRE can be applied for state control by pretesting the suitability of the selected state control measures. It is to simulate the effects of the state control measures on the airflow distribution of a dynamic ventilation system. The testing result can be used for fire fighting in a similar real case of a mine fire. By employing empirical methods or a qualitative analysis like Budryk approach, ventilation engineers can choose different combinations of locations and sizes of control devices as samples of state control for an underground mine fire. Program MFIRE can simulate the different combination samples, that consist of a certain mine fue, the corresponding different control measures, and obtain the control effects. After the different control results are compared, the state control measure, which creates the best effect among the different state control measures, will be chosen for that fire case. When a mine fire, which is similar to one of the pretested cases, breaks out, the corresponding choice of the state control measure is applied to the ventilation system. It means that the simulator MFIRE has the function of indirect state control [10]. To achieve the above two functions, state simulation and state control, the mine ventilation system condition, sometimes, should be changed in a wide range to meet the requirement of the fire fighting. These wide system condition changes, such as adding operating fans, stopping or reversing fans, changing fan characteristics, adding regulators and making airflow shortcuts are represented in the time table of the input data set When the data files are changed in a wide range, however, an iteration divergence and some other computing errors in the distribution of airflow, temperature, and contaminant may occur. More serious logical programming and flexible selection on the algorithms are wanted to meet the request of the different data sets, to achieve correct state distribution simulation and improve the iteration convergence. To enhance the reliability and common suitability of program MFIRE, it is necessary to make investigation, analysis, and modification for the formal versions of MFIRE. This report is an account of research conducted to improve the performance of and then further field test Draft Power Sensor (DPS) equipment, the use of which enables a bulldozer operator to optimize his machine's work rate. Significant improvements were made in DPS hardware, and extended field testing was conducted at two working strip mines: the Glenharold Mine of Consolidation Coal Company, near Stanton, North Dakota, and the Beulah Mine of Knife River Coal Company, near Beulah, North Dakota. This report documents the increase of bulldozer work production by greater than twenty percent while using the Draft Power Sensor when compared to baseline work production without benefit of the Draft Power Sensor. Research was done by Southwest Research Institute under contract with the Bureau of Mines.

The structural response of propped oil shale fractures was determined for each of two different grades of Green River oil shales (38.0 and 29.0 gpt) as they were heated in an inert atmosphere from ambient to subretorting temperatures (below those required for rapid pyrolysis of the organic matter). Small oil shale cores were propped apart by 3-mm glass beads to simulate a small cross section of a propped oil shale fracture between an injection and a producing well. These specimens were then heated at a uniform bate up to 800° F in a specially designed test cell under stress levels from 100 to 1,000 psi in biaxial and in triaxial confinement. Under the conditions of heat and compressive stress utilized in this study, all of the propped fractures in the two oil shales underwent structural deformation ranging from partial to complete collapse, as evidenced by proppant embedment. Structural collapse of induced fractures would in turn result in serious impairment or complete loss of the fracture flow capacities of the specimens. Results from this Bureau of Mines study indicate that underground retorting of Green River oil shale may be seriously impaired by loss of permeability when utilizing propped fractures in oil shales assaying more than 28 gpt.

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

Demand for arsenic exceeded supply, and major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers for the fourth consecutive year. Major demand for arsenic was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals. Legislation and Government Programs.-Effective April 1, 1981, taxes were collected from companies producing and importing 42 chemicals and petroleum products designated as hazardous, The revenue was used to begin funding of the 5-year, $1.6 billion "superfund" being established under Public Law 96-510, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, designed to help clean up spills of hazardous substances throughout the United States. As hazardous chemicals, arsenic metal and arsenic trioxide were taxed at the rate of $4.45 and $3.41 per short ton, respectively.

"Three men lost their lives in the Black Diamond Coal Mine near Seattle, Wash., recently while wearing oxygen breathing apparatus. The press dispatches stated that these men lost their lives while practicing with the apparatus. Later reports stated that the men died while attempting to make a trip 1200 feet down a 25 degree slope which was filled with black damp, in order to measure the amount of water that had accumulated at the bottom of the mine, and the trip was attempted with oxygen in the tanks of the apparatus with dials indicating only 45 minutes supply. The oxygen in the tank was used up and the men therefore lost their lives from a deficiency of air to breathe.In spite of all the education and training done by the Government to prevent accidents, men are prone occasionally to take unnecessary chances. Every piece of apparatus, no matter how perfect, has its limitations. The Government, through the agency of the Bureau of Mines, has trained many thousands of miners in the use of mine rescue apparatus. The training has been given to all miners who requested it, and the Bureau has gone to the extreme of urging miners to join the rescue and first-aid classes. In spite of all the efforts of the Government, men occasionally attempt the impossible."

Vanadium, molybdenum, and a titanium-10 percent vanadium alloy were evaluated for their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in a number of corrodents. Tests were conducted utilizing conventional U-bend techniques with subsequent evaluation in a pneumatic constant-load apparatus. Vanadium and molybdenum were generally resistant to stress corrosion cracking in the media studied. U-bend specimens of vanadium showed evidence of stress corrosion cracking in 6 li hydrochloric and 18 li sulfuric acids; however, tensile stress specimens exposed to these solutions did not exhibit stress cracking. Similar results were obtained when U-bend specimens of molybdenum were immersed in 10 percent formic acid. Titanium-10 percent vanadium alloy was susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in 10-percent (2.85 li) hydrochloric acid solution. Heat treating the alloy greatly reduced its corrosion rate and its susceptibility to stress cor-rosion cracking in this medium.

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

In the first paper of this series (R. 1. 4333) on the cooperative work with the Eagle-Pitcher Mining & Smelting Co., changes in the nature of the sinter feed were measured by corresponding changes in the retorting temperatures necessary to distill zinc at the best rates; the firing schedules summarized such changes. In this paper, third of the series, are noted same of the changes in practice that were brought about by the need to treat more fused, glassy, and "hard" sinter, as the operators qualify it. Losses of uncondensed zinc were increased by adding zinc-bearing materials from which? the zinc was readily distillable to hard sinter requiring higher-temperatures for zinc distillation. The rates of zinc distillation were increased by grinding the fuel finer; there were few benefits and loss of dust on grinding the sinter finer, unless the fine ?coal and fine sinter were brought into contact by pelletizing, and the pellets made but little dust.

Heats of formation of three crystalline oxides of rhenium (Re02, ReO3 and Re207) have been determined by the method of solution calorimetry, using an aqueous perchloric acid--ceric perchlorate solvent. Copper metal and cupric oxide were utilized as auxiliary substances. Heats were determined at 298' K for the reactions Re + 2CuO = Re02 + 2Cu, Re + 3CuO = ReO3 + 3Cu, and 2Re + 7CuO = Re207 + 7Cu. Standard heats of formation were derived using the value of -37.23 ±0,15 kcal/mole as the heat of formation of CuO. The standard molal heats of formation of the rhenium oxides were determined: Re02, -107.3 ±0.8 kcal; ReO3, -140.8 ±0.9 kcal; and Re207, -301.9 ±1.8 kcal.

The objective of this program was the development, design, and fabrication of six personal-sized completely self-contained dust monitors capable of real-time as well as time-averaged monitoring of the concentration of respirable particles in coal mines, in the range of 0.1 to 100 mg/m3. The operation of these monitors is based on light scattering and passive air sampling. The design stressed overall miniaturization, ruggedness, simplicity and versatility. These instruments incorporate a single-chip CMOS microprocessor to perform all signal processing, data display and storage, and timing functions. The overall dimensions of these devices are, approximately, 10 by 10 by 5 cm.

This report describes an inclined-piston pressure gage that operates from a zero-pressure datum level. The gage is adaptable to accurate vapor-pressure measurements in the low and intermediate pressure range, 0.01 to 40 mm (mercury). Residual friction in the oil-lubricated piston-cylinder combination is eliminated by a unique oscillatory method that is free of end thrust on the piston and allows the full sensitivity of the gage to be realized. The axial component of the weight-to-area ratio of the piston is determined by measuring the angle of inclination with a goniometer that can be read to 1 sec. Accuracy of the gage proper is estimated to range from 0.001 to 0.012 mm from lower to upper pressure limits. Its highest practical sensitivity is about 0.0005 mm. As a test, the vapor pressures of ice and water were measured in the range -30° to +20° C.

A unique machine for inducing bending fatigue in wire ropes was built at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh Research Center. This machine can produce nine levels of degradation through repetitive cycling of long samples of wire ropes of the types used in the mining industry. This report provides an analysis of the results of the first wire rope to be fatigued on this machine. These results have indicated that as a wire rope accumulates bending cycles, its strength first decreases because of wear and then in-creases due to cold working of the wires. As the amount of cold working increases, more and more of the embrittled wires break and the strength of the rope decreases rapidly. In this test, application of several of the regulatory retirement criteria to various sections of the rope suggests that there may be some inconsistency among them.

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 1,040 Bcf as of January 1, 1987. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 265 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 228 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 320 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, 227 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting and nondepleting, with the helium in storage being in a separate classification. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 951 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, i.e., those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gasfields, are estimated to total 53 Bef. There is 36 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX.

A Blastcorder4 was calibrated on the Bureau of Mines shaking table in the frequency range of 12 to 40 c.p.s. and in the amplitude range' of 0.25 to 1.0 g. The results of this calibration study show that in the frequency range of 12 to 30 c.p.s. the average accuracy of the Blastcorder is approximately ± 0.1 g.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969.
