The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

The most important single operation in mining is the ventilation of underground areas in a manner conducive to the health and safety of employees. Adequate volumes of pure air must be supplied at the working faces, along the haulageways, and wherever men work, so as to dilute and carry away the methane liberated from the coal and adjoining strata, noxious gases evolved by the use of explosives, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by men and formed by oxidation of carbonaceous material, as well as any other gases, and also dusts which may be found in mine workings. A sufficient quantity of air must also sweep abandoned or worked-out areas of the mine to prevent the accumulation of gases, where sealing methods are not utilized to isolate old workings. Air, in a quantity adequate to meet the needs of the particular mine to which it is applied, is necessary, and supplying it can be made very expensive through failure to observe good practices in its direction and apportionment." [Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. Six years ago, I addressed the annual meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials on "Fuels of Today and Tomorrow."3/ Since then, our country has been drawn into another great war of veritably global extent, with unprecedented demands on fuels, foods, and materials in general. My purpose in this address is to review the changes in fuel supply and demand since 1937 and to give you my views on the outlook for the future. CONDITIONS IN. 1237 Daring 1936 the United States produced and consumed one-third of the world production of coal, two-thirds of the petroleum, and about 95 percent of the natural gas. Two-thirds of the oil produced in all countries since the discovery well was drilled in 1859 had come from American wells. With the exception of the three depression years 1931, 1932, and 1933, new oil reserves were being discovered since 1924 well in excess of our increasing rate of consumption. Discoveries of natural gas, likewise, were tremendous in volume, and this fuel was being transported to most parts of the country by pipe lines; some of them more than 1,000 miles long. We had all kinds of mineral fuels in abundance and at prices that did not stint anyone in the maximum utilization of the mechanical devices that were being developed on every hand. No one suspected that the time might come in a few years when, gasoline would be doled out to some of us at the rate of 1-1/2 gallons a week or that many of our fuel-oil furnaces would have to be converted to burn coal. Of course, these restrictions are due to unusual war conditions, such as lack of coastwise tanker transportation, unprecedented demand for aviation gasoline, and the shortage of rubber for automotive tires. However, these shortages do call our attention to the vital part of petroleum reserves in our country's future position among nations. Therefore, it is of special interest to review briefly the relations of recent supply and demand with respect to our various mineral fuels.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

Ferromanganese continues to be an indispensable requirement in steel manufacture. Approximately 470,000 of the 80 per cent ferro-alloy was consumed in 1929 and increasing amounts will be required annually by the steel industry unless some satisfactory substitute is found. An average of 14 pounds of metallic manganese is used for each ton of steel produced, The principal use of manganese is for de-oxidation of the metal in the steel refining processes, although a considerable amount is also used for the production of special manganese steels. Unfortunately, domestic production of manganese ore is inadequate to meet normal peace-time requirements, not to mention increased abnormal war-time demands. The rather large quantities of low-grade manganiferous iron ores which occur in the Coruna Range in Minnesota have for a number of years greatly appealed to those interested in the development of a domestic source of the supply. The North Central Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has made an elaborate study of the possibilities of the pyrometallurgical treatment of ores from these deposits and much of the valuable information secured by them has already been published.

There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.

To insure domestic production of aluminium for, essential civilian and defense uses, the Government, under authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950, programed and promoted an aluminum-expansion program that will more than double the primary production capacity that existed in 1949. In view of this vastly increased production, the raw materials, with respect to both quantity and sources, are reviewed. The raw-material consumption pattern, the requirements during an expansion period when excess quantities of materials for starting up new facilities are consumed, and the probable requirements for production of 1.7 million tons per year of primary aluminum are discussed. The raw materials that presented the most difficult supply problems were bauxite, electrical power, and fluoride salts, and the supply pattern for these materials probably will undergo changes. A major part of the electrical energy for the increased capacity was to come from thermal generation, Jamaica-was to become a major source of bauxite, and synthetic fluoride salts were replacing natural cryolite in increasing quantities. Other raw-material requirements discussed are: Soda ash; lime, and limestone; starch; filter cloth; fuel; alumina; the carbonaceous materials, green and calcined petroleum coke, high-and low-temperature pitch and coke or anthracite; cryolite; aluminum fluoride; the materials going into production of synthetic fluorides, acid-grade fluorspar, and sulfuric acid; and labor. INTRODUCTION The raw materials for the aluminum industry that have received the most publicity are bauxite, the ore that supplies elemental aluminum, and electrical energy, the means by which aluminum oxide is reduced to metal. A number of other important materials are, however, required in large quantities in the production of primary aluminum metal.

Coal resource data from public and private sources, in conjunction with previously published data, were used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the location and extent of strippable coal resources in Colorado. Total strippable resources of approximately 18 billion tons were estimated in 12 separate coal regions, fields, or deposits. Coal recoverable by contour mining techniques was not included. Criteria used in defining strippable resources were a minimum coalbed thickness of 2 feet and a maximum overburden thickness of 150 feet, except where the coalbeds are of exceptional thickness. Ail Colorado coal is either Cretaceous or Tertiary in age. Cretaceous coals occui In the Dakota Sandstone, the Mesaverde Group, and equivalent formations while Tertiary coals occur in the Dawson Arkose, the Fort Union and the Wasatch Formations, and equivalent formations. The strippable coal ranges in rank from bituminous in the Yampa region to ligniferous in the Denver basin. Ali this coal is low in sulfur content (less than 1 percent); ash content is low to high; heating value ranges from 3,000 to 12,000 Btu's per pound. Ash from the lignite of the Denver basin was found to contain an abnormally high percentage of kaolinite which conceivably could be recoverable as alumina.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

Since 1991, Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC- formerly part of the Bureau of Mines) researchers have recorded extensive interviews with 30individuals who are experts in the area of mine emergency response. These individuals, who have an average of 35 years of mining experience and 29 years of mine emergency response experience, related stories and observations from events that they experienced during their combined 850 plus years in mine emergency response. The purpose of this effort was to gather information that could be passed onto both today?s and tomorrow?s mine emergency responders to train and guide them in handling future events. This is the second of two articles which report experts responses to questions about training for future mine emergencies. During the interviews they discussed how training should be conducted, who should be trained, and what topics should be included. This article will cover the third area: Topics that should be included in training for mine emergency response managers.

THIS-report gives results of in investigation of the carbonizing properties of 18 coals, including 2 from Alaska, 12 from British Columbia, 3 from Washington, and 1 from Utah. Each coal was carbonized in the standard 13-inch Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort at 900° C. Plastic properties were determined by the Gieseler and Davis methods, and agglutinating and free-swelling properties were determined by standard methods. Expanding properties were measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. From the results of the tests on these single coals, three coals from the Crowsnest area in British Columbia, representing Elk River Nos. 4, 9, and 10, were selected for blending with the Utah coal, which was from the Lower Sunnyside bed, Horse Canyon mine, Emery County. Lower Sunnyside also was blended with Wilkeson -Nos. 2 and 3 (Washington) coals, Pocahontas No. 3 from McDowell County, W. Va., and the Oklahoma low-volatile coal used in the blend carbonized at, the Provo, (Utah) coke plant at the time this investigation was started. Most of the blends contained 3 percent hard pitch, which is the proportion used at the Provo plant. The blends were also carbonized in 13-inch BM AGA retorts at 900° C. High-volatile B coal from the No. 3 bed, Evan-Jones mine, Lower Matanuska, Valley, Alaska, yielded poorly fused coke or char. M-bed coal from the Chickaloon mine, Upper Matanuska. Valley, Alaska, ranked as medium-volatile bituminous and coked strongly. It expanded 39.6 percent in the sole-heated oven at a. charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot..

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).

Columbium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium are present in solid waste products generated by the chlorination of rutile used for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiC14). The columbium and tantalum were separated from titanium and zirconium by liquid-liquid extraction techniques using a secondary amine. Salts of these elements are in a leach liquor produced by water leaching of mineral waste from the chlorination of rutile. This waste, produced at the rate of approximately 50,000 tons per year, is about 40 wt pct water soluble. Leach liquors, separated by filtration, were further separated into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction by pressure hydrolysis, The solid fraction containing Cb, Ta, Ti, and Zr was dissolved in HC1-HF and used as a feed solution. Columbium and tantalum were removed from the organic extractant with 1 [N] HC1. A miniature 10-stage reactor showed that the columbium and tantalum present in solution could be separated with a continuous flow.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has constructed a smoke chamber and developed sensitivity tests for smoke detectors. Response of ionization-and optical-type commercially available smoke detectors have been investigated. Six smoke detectors were measured with respect to visually obscuring smoke characterized by a corresponding optical density for smoldering and flaming coal combustion in the smoke chamber. It was determined that for one type of ionization smoke detector the alarm time was nearly equivalent to that of an odor monitor's alarm for smoldering coal combustion experiments and earlier for flaming coal combustion experiments. The experiments showed that an average CO concentration of 5 ppm corresponded to an optical density of 0.022 m-l for smoldering and flaming coal combustion. Two of the commercially available ionization-type smoke detectors were more responsive to flaming than smoldering coal combustion at an optical density of 0.022 m-l, whereas the optical smoke detectors showed the opposite trend. The responsive characteristics of the detectors evaluated with respect to known smoke conditions in the smoke chamber shows their potential for use as mine fire sensors or part of a mine atmospheric monitoring system to improve mine safety.

The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. This paper is the second report of the results of the United States Bureau of Mines twenty-third semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper, reporting data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 31293. A third and concluding paper giving the results of other tests will be published as soon as these tests have been completed. The present paper deals with the data of the twenty-third semiannual survey presented in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government motor gasoline. The sample numbers used are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 3129, with additional data included for copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),4 and sulphur content by the lamp method. Three hundred and twelve samples were collected and analyzed in this survey. Two hundred and seven samples were competitive-price gasolines and one hundred and five samples were premium-price motor fuels.

Ore-dressing tests were conducted on a sample of ore submitted by the Richmond Hill Mining Co. of Lead, S. Dak. as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for investigating potential domestic sources of manganese. Half of the sample was taken from the 300-foot level and half from surface cuts. The problems involved were liberation and rejection of silica and iron and removal of lead, Silver, and gold from the manganese concentrates. Although a portion of the silica and iron oxides was too intimately associated with manganese minerals for rejection by ore-dressing methods, thus limiting recovery of high-grade concentrates, the Richmond Hill ore was found amenable to simple gravity methods of concentration for producing intermediate-grade products. By jigging and tabling, 73.8 percent of the total manganese was recovered in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent Mn. Lead, silver, and gold were successfully removed from gravity concentrates by a chloridizing roasting treatment.
