"Introduction.Oil-field operations have often been carried on under great stress and haste, in which the prime purpose has been to put the wells down rapidly as possible, without regard to a few of the various factors affecting cost. In such fields as Burkurnett, Texas, where the well locations are town lots and other small tracts, the operator was concerned primarily with in drilling. In such cases a few thousand dollars more or less in the cost of a well not considered. We are reaching a time, however, when our reserves a,more definitely outlined and properties are being along more economic lines. Operators are becoming more concerned with the actual cost of this work, and are gradually learning that fuel consumption can be reduced in drilling and producing without delaying the speed of drilling, and in the case of production, it will greatly reduce the unit cost per barrel of production.Types of Field Boilers.In the oil fields there are in general two types of boilers; those which are used for drilling wells and are of a more or less portable character, and those established later in a more permanent form and serve for the purpose,of generating steam for producing the oil. As a rule, the latter type of boilers are larger than those of the drilling type. Usually, little care is given to the installation of drilling boilers; particularly in attempting to set them up in such a way as to avoid waste in of fuel. Because of the temporary nature of these installations there may be some justification for not giving them more,attention in this resend, but it is believed that a few precautions could be taken that would amply repay the cost and trouble taken. In connection with the boiler plants that are afterwards established, when a few producing wells have been,brought in with a life of two to ten years and probably longer, much care to the boiler-plant construction and to the installation of recording instruments which will assist in operating the plant at minimum cost."

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples from seven deposits in the Pacific Northwest were tested for amenability to various beneficiation techniques. The samples obtained by the Bureau's Office of Mineral Resources at Spokane, Washington represent a large potential source of titanium. This report summarizes the results of tests at the Bureau's Metallurgy Research Center, Albany, Oregon. Recoveries from tabling placer samples were about 50 percent at grades of 30 percent titanium dioxide. Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 10,500-hectare Cache Peak study area in 1992; the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel examined and sampled prospect workings; 14 rock and 20 placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 40 km south-southeast of Burley. Idaho, in the Sawtooth National Forest. There were seven mining claims located inside the study area, and one additional historical mining claim location. Gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc: Possible resource, poor exposure precludes estimate. Marble: Several million tonnes may be suitable for a variety of uses; markets too distant to favor mining. Sand and Gravel: Several million m3, but markets and transportation costs do not favor mining. Quartzite: Several million tonnes may be suitable for metallurgical purposes; however, markets are too limited to mine. Slabs have been quarried at three localities adjacent to the study area, for decorative stone. Production: In 1979, two tonnes of ore were produced and a plan of operations was submitted calling for approximately 5 km of access road for the Last Chance mine. Decorative stone production was not recorded.

Another major aluminum company announced intentions to follow other domestic producers recent price actions by raising its unalloyed ingot quotes by 3¢ to 44¢ per pound, effective June 1, 1976. COBALT: All final data for 1975 are included in the table for cobalt on page 23. Demand in March increased significantly for the second month in a row, signaling a recovery from the previous year's relatively low demand levels. Imports of cobalt tripled in March over those of February. This should partially offset reduced sales of cobalt excesses from the National Stockpile. Import projections for the next several months have been lowered because transportation difficulties in Zaire are expected to result in reduced shipments.

The Bureau of Mines, at its Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, has devised methods for separating and reusing the major portion of waste plastics discarded in urban and industrial refuse. Waste plastic concentrates from a local collection drive, recycling center collections, urban refuse pilot plants, and the secondary metals industry were separated into three major thermoplastic families--polyolefins, styrenes, and vinyls--based on differences in density using a Bureau-designed sink-float-elutriation hydraulic separator. Other separation methods and systems such as air classification, jigging, liquid media, screening, and electrostatics were studied. Vinyl plastics contain up to 50 percent HC1. It was found that over 90 percent of the HC1 in vinyls can be recovered as usable hydrochloric acid by pyrolysis at 350° C. The remaining pyrolysis products which had heats of combustion in excess of 12,000 Btu/lb, could become valuable as a future source of energy. A characterization study conducted on eight chopped wire insulation wastes from secondary copper and aluminum processors showed that most wastes contained 2 to 7 percent residual metal and large percentages of vinyl. The residual metal content of some of these wastes was lowered to 0.1 percent and the vinyl portion segregated using various separation techniques. The research also suggests ways in which reclaimed thermoplastics may be fabricated into useful products.

This report describes the initial phase of Bureau of Mines research in the hydraulic mining of bituminous coal. The mining site and equipment are described, and the test procedures and results obtained with a bar-mounted monitor are given. Tests showed that hard Pittsburgh-bed coal can be mined hydraulically from a solid face at water pressures of 4,000 pounds per square inch.4 Coal was penetrated to a depth of 4 feet in 20 seconds with 225 gallons of water per minute coming from a 3/8-inch nozzle at 4,000 pounds per square inch pressure. Some difficulty was encountered in cutting the binders occurring in the coal; it was not possible Lu penetrate directly the overlying draw slate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.

These provisions shall be fixed by virtue of the colonial ordinances.Application for permission to explore shall be made in accordance with existing laws. Simultaneous applications, those made on the same day, must be decided by drawing lots; but an application for the concession for exploitation has preference ovor that for permission for exploration. On notice of objection to the drawing of lots, the Governor may in his discretion, declare the drawing null and void and order a re-drawing."

This program was a four phase program with experimental dual frequency equipment resulting from Phase I, emergency single frequency equipment developed under Phase II, and equipment documentation required under Phase III. "INTRODUCTION There are presented in this report the results of limited studies by the Bureau of Mines of the firedamp safety of some powder-powered tools proposed for use underground in coal mines. Although motor gasoline marketed in the United States in January of this year was, on the average, slightly more volatile than that sold in January 1925, the improvement in quality is too small to be of importance. In other words, there is no evidence that any radical change in the quality of gasoline is being made at the present time. During the past six years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the thirteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

As an exploratory effort to produce useful products from coal by a new path, the Bureau has made a few experiments on the fast heating of finely ground coal particles by irradiation with a flash of high intensity light. The flash was produced by an electrical discharge at high voltage through a xenon-filled tube. The flashes lasted from 2 to 3 milliseconds. The reaction took place in small sample tubes, ½ inch-dimeter by 4 inches long, and with small amounts of coal (total amount charged 0.1 gram, probable effective amount not more than 20 milligrams). Average particle size of the coal, estimated on a numerical basis, was 20 microns. Temperatures reached were evidently quite high, because all products obtained in quantity were characteristic of high temperature pyrolysis. Apparently, conversion of the coal was extensive where isolated particles received the full benefit of a flash. It seems particularly significant that acetylene was present in appreciable amounts--comprising almost 3 percent of the total gaseous product in one case. This is good evidence of a short heating period to very high temperature (well above 1,000° C) followed by rapid quenching. Although the results are interesting, they do not suggest any immediate practical application.

"Concentration, ore-dressing, or the dressing of minerals are common terms used in metallurgy and indicate processes of separating valuable minerals from worthless gangue. It is understood, of course, that the products from such processes, being separated from the various minerals and gangue, are ready for commercial sale or for further treatment by smelters and refineries.Gravity concentration takes advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the various constituent minerals and gangue of waste material in the ore. The two most common forms of concentration by this means are jigging and table concentration. Jigs usually are used in the separation of relatively coarse material and the tables for the finer material, the line of division in general being about 20 mesh.There are mar factors to be considered .before a decision can be made as to what method would be best adapted to the successful treatment of an ore and only by careful experiments can this be determined. Among the important factors to be considered are. The nature of the minerals present, their physical and chemical relations to the gangue material, and the gangue material itself. Perhaps the most important is the number of minerals present and their relation to each other.Metals exist in ores in three principal forms -- sulphides, oxides or carbonates, and native. Concentration by gravity methods is in general best suited to sulphide ores, although in some places considerable success has, been obtained in the concentration of oxide ores by gravity methods."

Data released by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis show continued gradual change in the real GNP's rate of growth in 1984, which has eased from an annual growth rate of 10.1 percent in the first quarter lo 7.1 percent in the second quarter, and then to 2.7 percent in the third quarter. The automobile industry strike in the last half of September had only a small effect, estimated at less than a 0.1 percentage point reduction in the growth rate. Among the components that comprise the GNP, personal consumption and fixed investment grew at lower real rates in the third quarter than in the second quarter, while net exports decreased. Personal consumption expenditures increased $0.4 billion in the third quarter, compared with an increase of $20.1 billion in the second quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment increased $3.9 billion in the third quarter, compared with $9.6 billion in the second quarter. The other component of fixed investment--residential investment--increased from $60.8 billion in the second quarter to $61.2 billion in the third quarter. Real net exports of goods and services decreased $1 1.3 billion in the third quarter, compared with a $3.1 billion decrease in the second quarter. Although exports increased from an annual rate of $144.7 billion to $150.2 billion, imports increased much more, from an annual rate of $1 56.2. billion to $172.8 billion (table 1).

The work described in this report, part of the Bureau of Mines long-range program to develop methods of utilizing submarginal domestic sources of aluminum, was undertaken to investigate the effects of iron in the lime soda sinter process, The approximate Fe2O3 content in a sinter for maximum alumina and soda recovery was 8 to 9 percent. Fe2O3 appears to inhibit gelation, and 15.5 percent Fe2O3 produces effects similar to those produced by 1 percent sucrose. In the lime soda sinter process, aluminum silicates are sintered with limestone and soda ash to yield dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate. The sodium aluminate is extracted by leaching in caustic solution. The solution is purified by heating in an autoclave with lime to remove silica, and alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The reactions involved in sintering and leaching are complex. A number of studies by the Bureau of Mines4-9 and others1 indicate that the iron content of sinters influenced the recovery of alumina and soda and the gelation characteristics.

RESINS from a bituminous pitch, a bituminous coal, a lignite tar, a subbituminous pitch, and an electrode binder pitch wore investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The compositions of these resins were determined by four independent methods of structural detemination: (1) Molecular formula and ring analysis, including ring (2) infrared and ultraviolet spectra; (3) combined pyrolysis/gas chromatography, and (4) catalytic dehyrogenation followed by spectra and pyrolysis. The resin structure was correlated with coal structure, and it was concluded that pitch resins probably consist of essentially unaltered coal molecules carried over with the tar vapors in low-temperature carbonization.

Develop a down-hole replaceable diamond core bit that will reduce overall drilling costs and increase total available drilling time per hole. Approach A one-piece diamond core drill bit of unique geometric shape has been designed, fabricated and field tested. The bit can be withdrawn (or replaced) from the bottom of the well-bore without removing the drill rods from the hole, saving a significant amount of non-productive drilling time. How It Works The replaceable bit system consists of two basic subsystems: the removable core bit, and the equipment necessary to replace the wornout bit without pulling the drill rods out of the hole. The geometric configuration of the bit is that of a one-piece diamond studded cutting element created by "slicing off" two parallel sides of a conventional diamond cone bit. This geometric configuration, along with some minor modifications to the outer core barrel, allows the bit to be rotated in two planes and, with the retraction-insertion tools, raised or lowered through the interior of the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system. For example, to retrieve the bit, a retraction tool is lowered through the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system and at the hole bottom, the tool automatically orients itself within the outer core barrel.

Lignite constitutes approximately 97 percent of the near-surface coal resources in Texas. The most significant bituminous resources are in the north-central and southern parts of the state. Coal reserves in Texas are estimated to be 13.7 billion tons, about three percent of U.S. coal reserves. The average thickness of coal seams mined in Texas is approximately eight feet. Texas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved February 16, 1980; the program was fully approved June 18,1980. The state's Abandoned Mine Lands program was approved June 23,1980.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral-dressing investigations by the Bureau of Mines of 14 individual or composite character samples from deposits in the Batesville manganese district. It will be noted that some concentrates have met or approached analytical specifications for metallurgical manganese ore although great variations in both physical and chemical composition from once deposit to another make each a new problem. In most cases it is evident that a substantial loss of manganese has occurred in the various slime and tailing products. An important aspect of this work is the research being conducted on manganese-bearing limestones. Recent reconnaissance indicates that this resource constitutes one of the major domestic reserves of manganese. Laboratory study has shown that ferrograde concentrates can be recovered from samples of manganese-bearing limestones from two properties. Research on samples from other areas is still underway.
