In 1988, the aggregate value of total world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at nearly $542 billion in current (1988) dollars, which was about 8.6% above the 1987 level, but still 23.7% below the record high set in 1980. Comparable comprehensive data for 1989 were not available in time for inclusion in this chapter, but 1989 returns for developed market economy countries only were 1 1.8% above those for 1988. These countries accounted for about 50% of the total mineral commodity export trade in 1988. It would be unsound to utilize the overall 11.8% growth rate for mineral commodity export trade for these countries to extrapolate the growth in total world mineral commodity trade because these developed market economy countries account for substantially different shares of the five major mineral commodity groups listed in table 2. Specifically, developed market economy countries in 1988 accounted for 56% of world export of ore, concentrate, and scrap, 74.7% of world exports of iron and steel, 71.7% of world exports of nonferrous metals, and 57.8% of all exports of crude nonmetals, but only 26.6% of world exports of mineral fuels. Moreover, even within each of these groups, the actual product mix included in developed market economy country aggregates differ from that in developing market economy country aggregates and in centrally planned economy country aggregates. Nonetheless, an increase of 9% to 12% in the value of world mineral commodity export trade seems indicated by available returns.

In 1990, the aggregate value of world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at more than $64 billion in current (1990) dollars, about 8.4% higher than that in 1989, but still 8.7% below the record high set in 1980. Table 8 provides a data series for the estimated value of world export trade in all mineral commodities from 1979 through 1990, as well as a breakdown of this total into fuel and nonfuel commodities. It is noteworthy that for this 1990 edition, trade data for the year of review were available in time for inclusion, whereas in previous editions, the latest available global trade data were for the year prior to the year of review. Hence, as regards trade, this edition of Minerals in the World Economy updates the 1989 edition by 2 years rather than by only 1. For this reason, it is appropriate to note that the 1989 global total value for inter-national export trade in mineral commodities was almost $596 billion, 11.1 % above the revised 1988 level of more than $536 billion, both figures expressed in current dollars for the appropriate year. Despite the considerable increase in the dollar value of mineral commodity exports, their share of total export merchandise trade declined to 19.1 % in 1990 from 19.7% in 1989. At 19.1%, this share was very near the recent year record low of 19.0% reached in 1988. The year 1990 was the fourth in a row in which the total value of world mineral commodity export trade increased.

Stresses that damage coal mine trailing cables were investigated to obtain a quantified description of cable-stress locations, magnitudes, and frequency of occurrence. Stresses occurring in operating mining sections were measured and observed. Answers to questions that arose during the underground investigations were pursued under controlled conditions, both in the field and in the laboratory. Cable-handling suggestions that minimize or eliminate the stresses are summarized in the form of recommendations to mine operators.

To rapidly and dependably locate shorts and opens in mining equipment power cables. Approach: The approximate locations of faults are found using a sound pulse echo, then the faults are exactly located with one of two probes. How It Works: To approximately locate u fault in shielded or unshielded cable, the cable is disconnected from the mine power center, and connected to the sound pulse generator. The generator is also connected to the ground conductor of the cable. When the generator is energized, electrical pulses are transmitted, and each moves along the conductor until it reaches a fault. When a pulse reaches the fault an echo returns to the instrument, either a positive pulse if the fault is an open, or a negative pulse if the fault is a short. See Figure 1. The further along the cable the first fault is from the instrument, the longer it takes for the echo to return. The instrument automatically measures the time and calculates the distance. The distance in feet is shown on an illuminated digital display.

Splicing portable trailing cables used in underground coal mines is usually less expensive in terms of capital outlay and production time lost than replacing them. However, handling trailing cables may result in electrical arcs, shocks , and burns. Also, destructive forces encountered during a mining operation may shorten the effective life of a cable splice. This report gives the results of an analysis of cable splice defects in an effort to establish cable splice performance criteria, determine testing standards for cable splices, establish guidelines for training programs in cable splicing, and indicate areas for improvement.

Trailing-cable splices are evaluated for moisture exclusion abilities after repeated travel over shuttle-car sheave wheels. Tests are conducted on cables with jackets made of neoprene, cholrosulphonated polyethylene (CSPE), and nitrile butadiene-polyvinyl chloride (NBR-PVC) to 50° C. The results show that some splice kits are effective as received, others are improved with minor but significant changes, and still others must be redesigned to be effective in underground applications. Laboratory results are compared with actual underground splice results. Recommendations for cable preparation prior to splicing are presented.

Since 1991, Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC-formerly part of the Bureau of Mines) researchers have recorded extensive interviews with 30 individuals who are experts in the area of mine emergency response. These individuals, who have an average of 35 years of mining experience and 29 years of mine emergency response experience, related stories and observations from events that they experienced during their combined 850 plus years in mine emergency response. The purpose of this effort was to gather information that could be passed on to both today?s and tomorrow?s mine emergency responders to train and guide them in handling future events. This is the first of two articles which report the responses that these experts gave when asked how they think people who may have to respond to a future mine emergency should be trained. During the interviews they discussed how training should be conducted, who should be trained, and what topics should be included. This article will cover the first two areas: what training methodologies would be most effective and who needs to participate.

Human testing has always been a needed way to provide information on the effects of vehicle vibration, however, the manner of testing has not reflected the real situations of driver’s hands on a steering wheel and a seat with back support and driving tasks. The typical system have used a standard sinusoidal excitation rather than the typical types of road – truck excitations The new truck driver training simulators provide the combination of road roughness, speed effects, cab environment and individual tasks. The system has a full six axis simulation potential. The simulators have the protection of the individual by a combination of two ways for the individual to stop the motion as well as an operator with visual capability who can stop the testing. The closed simulator, shown in Figure 1, has the potential for providing motion during the operation.

This paper introduces a method for teaching workers to communicate necessary information when giving or receiving emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people may not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Interviews conducted with 48 underground coal miners who had escaped mine fires revealed that the warning information provided was inadequate. In some cases, sufficient information was not provided to the endangered miners. At other times, miners failed to ask for information they needed to plan and execute effective escapes. Researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have been studying the content of emergency warning messages and have developed an emergency communication protocol. A training intervention that presents the protocol and related mental cues is being evaluated for effectiveness in improving the content of emergency messages. In this paper the protocol is presented and the training package described. The evaluation procedures and a summary of the analyses conducted to-date are also provided. The training package was developed for use with underground coal miners, but could easily be modified for emergency communications training in other settings.

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of marine vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in each of these categories are not devoted wholly to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move agricultural products as well as crude minerals and mineral fertilizers, as ore/bulk/oil carriers also do. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to moving nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral and nonmineral cargoes. They include general cargo carriers, full containerships, partial containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels, such as sue, draft, crew requirements, and type of propulsion system, as well as fuel costs, have an undeniable influence on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and quality and types of material moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy. Unfortunately, comprehensive data in this regard are not available.

Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.

The increase of nearly 1.5 % in the number of vessels between 1990 and 1991 compared with a 2.7% growth in gross tonnage and a nearly 2.3 % increase in deadweight tonnage points to an increase in the average size of vessels. Of the four categories of vessels reported, all showed increases in number and in deadweight tonnage between 1990 and 1991 except for "other," and on the gross tonnage basis, all groups registered increases. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. From the National institute for Occupational Safety and Health Disasters take many forms and demand quick response from emergency workers. They may include natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes, or they may involve manmade disasters such as technological failures or terrorist attacks. As a member of an emergency response team, you and your team members are at risk of experiencing what psychologists refer to as a traumatic incident—an incident that may Involve exposure to catastrophic events, severely injured children or adults, dead bodies or body parts, or the loss of colleagues, for instance. Traumatic incidents can produce unusually strong emotional reactions that may interfere with your ability to function at the scene or later: You may experience any of the physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral symptoms listed below in Table 1. Some people experience emotional aftershocks weeks or months after they have passed through a traumatic event. Others may experience these reactions while still at the scene, where they must stay clearly focused on constantly changing hazards to maintain their own safety and to rescue injured victims.

The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

Owing to the growth of alloy steel production and its influence on tramp element levels when recycled, foundries have expressed concern regarding the quality of scrap used to prepare iron castings. Reliable and current information was unavailable on the amount of tramp elements contained in iron castings over time. Accordingly, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Foundrymen's Society (AFS), analyzed cast iron samples from participating foundries throughout the United States on a quarterly basis to ascertain possible trends. Each sample was analyzed for 28 elements to determine if changes had occurred as a function of several input variables. This bulletin describes the research and presents analytical results and evaluations over a 5-3/4-year period from January 1981 to September 1986. Results show that iron casting compositions are changing with respect to a few tramp elements such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, tin, and zinc over the period. Changes in charge compositions probably are responsible. Significant variations between zones also were observed with aluminum, arsenic, cobalt, chromium, copper, and manganese.

The roof bolt system of a mine, if properly selected and installed, can allow for better roof control and reduce the potential for roof falls. Because of this potential to reduce roof falls and improve ground control conditions, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an interest in the types of roof bolts that are used by the coal industry. Further, NIOSH has conducted research into how various support parameters can affect the number of roof falls that occur, including support type. Today, the five main types of roof bolts installed in U.S. coal mines are mechanical anchor bolts, point-anchor or resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, torque-tension bolts, combination bolts, and fully grouted resin rebar. This paper describes each support in detail. Because of the importance of resin in the functioning of the majority of bolts installed, resin grouts are also discussed. Further, trends in the types of roof bolts used are reviewed. Over the last 10 years, the significant trend has been the large reduction in the relative number of mechanical anchor bolts that are installed. These bolts have been replaced mainly by the resin-grouted rebar system. Data are also presented to show the impact of these changes in bolting on the number of roof falls.
