Today I would like to share with you some blasting practices used in the thick coal seam mines of Northeastern Wyoming. I will begin by giving you a general overview of a thick seam coal operation at The Carter Mining Company's Rawhide Mine. I will then discuss the blasting procedures used at this operation. The Rawhide Mine is one of 13 mines operating in the Eastern Powder River Basin of Northeastern Wyoming. Approximately 23 billion tons of recoverable coal lies in the Powder River Basin. The Rawhide Mine is currently producing approximately 8 million tons per year. Rawhide is the 9th largest coal mine in the United States according to 1982 production. We also received the 1982 Sentinels of Safety Award for being the safest surface coal mine in the United States. Rawhide's permitted capacity is 24 million tons.

The A5 road in the United Kingdom forms an ancient and well-used route through the hills and mountains of North Wales. In the 1990?s a programme of work was conducted to upgrade the road to modern standards. As part of this work a new cutting was constructed to bypass a portion of road routed through a gorge close to the village of Ty Nant. This new cutting was formed by drilling and blasting and included much pre-splitting and extensive rock bolting. This operation caused much concern to local residents relating to vibration, air overpressure and flyrock.

Phelps Dodge Corporation's Tyrone Mine is a large open pit copper operation located in the southwestern corner of New Mexico. The Tyrone concentrator processes approximately 50,000 tons per day of copper ore. The waste ratio for this operation is 3:1; e.g., for every one ton of ore mined, three tons of waste material are also removed. This results in a mining rate of about 200,000 tons per day.

Underwater drilling and blasting is conducted for deepening of sea channels for port berths, lake or reservoirs for water supply etc. so that rock dredging becomes easier. During this process there are several associated unwanted effects having potential to cause damage to surrounding structures and the environment, flora and fauna. Though all these ill effects can’t be completely eliminated but adopting controlled blasting techniques can minimize these to tolerable levels. It is recognized that ground vibrations resulting from rock blasting below water near dam may endanger the safety of earthen dams. Therefore, controlled blasting technique was used to ensure the safety of dam and its efficacy was established by monitoring of blast vibrations. The usage of small quantity of explosives confined in blast holes, non-electrical delay detonators and initiating each hole with a separate delay helped to minimize the ground vibration effects on surrounding structures.

Griesemer Stone located in Springfield, Missouri has supplied aggregate in Southwest Missouri since 1946. In 1954 the decision was made to mine the formation and utilize the mined out area for warehouse space. As advancement proceeded, entrances and small diameter air shafts for ventilation were needed and had to be added. It was decided in 1989 to sink an 8' diameter air shaft designed to move 200,000 cubic feet of air per minute with the help of (4) four 50,000 CFM Loren Cook Fans.

The objective of this research work is to increase the drilling ratio represented in tons per drilled meter (ton/m) to reduce mining costs. One of the key characteristics of this research is the use of the ITH (in-the-hole) drilling rig with a water-powered hammer, also known as Wassara™. The patented Wassara™ in-the-hole hammer is powered by high-pressure water instead of air. To reach the objective, a new design of the blast pattern was implemented considering the following: Burden from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.8 m (9.2 ft) Spacing from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.7 m (8.9 ft) Drill diameter from 89 mm (3.5”) to 102 mm (4”) Drilling length from 15 m (49 ft) to 30 m (98 ft) Borehole deviation < 2% The result of this new design is the optimization of the drilling ratio (ton/m); having as a baseline 5.2 ton/m with traditional equipment and obtaining 13.7 ton/m with the ITH drilling, which generates annual savings of $2.43M.

Mining Engineers throughout the world have an appreciation for the importance of the role of the Blasthole Drill in one of the primary elements of the mining process. This paper highlights areas that could influence the overall cost effectiveness of that process of breaking rock and the associated downstream mining and ore recovery activities - and how the drill is designed and configured to meet that challenge. Factors influencing drill productivity and overall cost effectiveness are addressed, particularly regarding the benefits which are not necessarily reflected in the drilling process and therefore more difficult to quantify. This paper explores some of the downstream benefits of what we do to the drilling process.

The drilling at the Taum Sauk Reservoir was a unique compilation of the latest technology and everyday common sense. This site is comprised of rhyolite, which is 30 times harder than limestone in comparison. Using some of the most state of the art drills, coupled with GPS guidance, angular drilling systems, and an ordinary piece of string, some of the most amazing drilling feats were accomplished. By constructing the new dam on top of a mountain that had been blasted once before nearly 50 years ago treacherous conditions for the drills and crew were a challenge. The drills had to be flown in by cranes to get to their locations, where they then drilled anywhere from 2.5 to 6 inch (6.4 to 15.2 cm) holes at angles up to 24.4 degrees. Custom drill bits were designed by the drilling crew to tackle feats such as drilling holes up to 120 feet (36.6 m) deep. A main challenge was the shape of the reservoir, as it is not in a straight line, but rather round, so no technological way was readily available to use to drill. Common sense came in and an ordinary piece of string was used to aide in drilling the hole. A revolutionary step was that our drill was used to core our own samples. By using our own equipment, we were able to complete this task for one-third of the cost of having a third party contractor obtain the core samples. On this unmatched jobsite, it has been established that technology has come a long way, but when all else fails, a piece of string will do just fine.

A model for drilling productivity and total drilling cost is presented. It specifically addresses down-thehole drilling, but also covers other drilling methods. The important factors are: 1, productivity in tons drilled; and 2, total cost per drill ton. For non-blasthole applications these factors are measured in drill feet and cost per foot. The model focuses on the entire system and allows the operator to optimize the system based on individual drilling conditions.

The blasting process is one of the most high-risk activities in mining operations. Shotfirers and blasting crews face hazards from slope failure, toxic gas and fumes, or unstable ground condition every day of the blast. But on the other hand, to ensure all of the holes are detonated, shotfirers are required to reenter the location to check. With advances in technology, nowadays the use of drone in mining is not something that is rarely seen. It has been used for mapping and slope-monitoring. This paper will discuss the application of drone for blasting process in a mining pit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. By using drones, it is not only safety factor which can be improved but also operational efficiency and technical analysis. The duration it takes for post blasting process can be reduced because the drone can directly enter the location after blast. The technical analysis for the blast can also become more comprehensive, as the before-after photos and video documentation can be taken with wider view. It helps with fly rock calculation and fragmentation analysis too.

This increased awareness usually results in an outcry for tighter regulations and restrictions on those in the blasting industry. Those affected do not often understand the dynamics of blasting and are simply fearful of the unknown. The emission of particulate material is one of the several parameters related to environmental control in mining operations near communities. Blasting is an event that generates and leaves a large amount of dust in suspension, which can cause discomfort to communities, generating complaints that can compromise the operational continuity of the mine. The proper management of these environmental impacts is a key factor to ensure a good relationship with the neighborhoods, making a responsible mining in harmony with the environment, giving sustainability to the mining business in the medium and long term. The main goal of this work is to present different techniques and technologies applied in a large-scale open pit mine in Brazil, with operations close to a community, to minimize the emissions of particulate material into the atmosphere. For this, different technical solutions were implemented. First, a non-conventional blasting technique was introduced that incorporates special charging and timing configurations, generating a first upper layer that serves as a blanket to contain a second, higher-energy lower layer. An optimal stemming was also defined in order to minimize ejections and maximize cratering, using the scaled depth of burial theory as well as video and fragmentation analysis. In addition, changes were made in the timing between decks (to guarantee a minimum time between layers) and between holes (changing the initiation point opposite to the free face). Finally, additional measures such as humidification of the bench, use of a wind vane to identify wind direction and the construction of a physical barrier between the mine and the community were implemented as additional mitigation measures. By applying the above techniques together, in some specific zones of the mine, it was possible to considerably reduce the ejections generated by blasting versus conventional blasting without the above measures, which was demonstrated in the field with dual blasts trials. Additionally, it was possible to achieve a vibration reduction in the community of ~30%. This work demonstrates how, by applying these technical solutions, it was possible to minimize the dust and vibrations generated by blasting allowing this operation to do sustainable mining

During the summer of 2015, Unisea Inc. sought proposals for the G1 Dock Replacement Project in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. It would be a one year project and construction was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. One aspect of the project was the requirement for a layer of armor stone to protect part of the dock. An estimated 30,500 tonnes (37,670 t) of armor stone were needed for the project. The source of rock was the Unisea Quarry due to its proximity to the project and the quality of the stone meeting all the required technical standards.
