The connexion between the Kent and the Continental coalfields on the one hand and the western British coalfields on the other has been for many years a controversial subject between geologists. These coalfields were once considered as detached portions of a former extensive sheet of Carboniferous deposits, but some geologists seem now to incline to the view that they were never connected. The writer hopes to show that the problem is one of the most difficult of geological investigations; that we are still far from a perfect solution; and that both of the extreme theories must be set aside. The physiography of NW Europe during the Carboniferous, with its various generations of earlier folds, is outlined and the features of the Lower and Upper Carboniferous anticlines and synclines discussed, followed by consideration of the denudation of the coalfields and local descriptions of the Malvernian range and Usk anticline, the Pennine chain, the Shropshire coalfield and the Kent coalfield. An attempt is made to trace the transverse Midland anticlines southwards and to deal with the intervening syncline: for example, if the dissymmetrical profile of the Pennine Chain holds good at its southern end then the syncline west of the chain must be deeper than the syncline east of it (the Kent syncline), and in this syncline the deepest part must be at its south-eastern corner, and therefore south of the diagonal ridge. T here is some actual evidence of the existence of Coal-Measures in this syncline, as the results of the Batsford and Burford borings prove. The hypothetical character of most of the conclusions will prove, beyond any doubt, how fa r geologists still are from a perfect settlement of this problem, and how much this settlement is dependent on the more or less advanced state of knowledge regarding all the geological features of these coalfields and of the surrounding country

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. PGE-bearing sulphide mineralisation is contained in the lower 600 m of the Upper Central Layered Zone of the intrusion. There are four regimes with distinctive crystallisation characteristics. PGE content is low, both in bulk rock and in terms of metal in 100% sulphides, in the sulphide-rich cumulates but increases sharply in the sulphide-poor cumulates at the base of regime 1. Increases in regime 2 have no such clear relationship with incoming cumulus sulphides. PGE contents are low throughout regime 3, but regime 4 has sulphides with high PGE content, decreasing rapidly upwards, at the base of many of its cyclic units. The observations are interpreted as indicating that sulphide saturation occurred in the middle of a cyclic unit in regime 1, after which fractional segregation of sulphide caused a systematic decrease in PGE content. The resulting contrast between 40 000 ppb PGE in sulphides below the mineralised zone and less than 1 000 ppb above is of practical importance in exploration for such zones. In regime 2 the magma chamber was open to fresh influxes and PGE content was not so sensitive to sulphide saturation. In many regime 4 units influxes of new magma caused immediate sulphide saturation and PGE depletion, so that PGE-rich cumulates do not underlie PGE-bearing sulphide zones. Theoretical analysis indicates that regime 1-type behaviour is likely to characterise intrusions below the level at which plagioclase has entered as a cumulus phase and regime 4-type behaviour above

The optimal maintenance and control of the air flow and pressure distribution in a mine network are achieved by the correct positioning of the mine fans and regulators within the mine ventilation circuit. The principal considerations are the location of the main and underground fans or regulators and the attendant control of mine leakage. Air flow control is achieved by either passive or active regulation. Passive regulation adds resistance, usually in the form of a regulating door. Active regulation adds pressure sources in the form of underground booster fans. Ventilation engineers are increasingly turning to analytical tools to assist them in the design and operation of ventilation systems. This paper has formulated the methods, both medical and engineering, for the control of pneumokoniosis in the haematite-mining industry in West Cumberland, but this is only part of a general service to improve the lot of the worker in these mines, to make him a better and happier workman, and to permit him to enjoy his work and leisure in comfort and good health. This organization has now been functioning for more than ten years and the results are indeed heartening, but it is only as a result of constant vigilance from the mining and medical point of view that such a plan can operate efficiently. The human element and its full understanding is by no means the least of the problems.

Paper presented at conference and first published in preprint volume of: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in University of Exeter, 23-24 March 1994. London: IMM, 1994. Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry

The most important parameters affecting the solubility of ulexite (sodium calcium borate) in H2SO4 were found to be reaction temperature and solid:liquid ratio, in that order. Dissolution increased with increase in temperature and stirring speed and with decrease in solid:liquid ratio, particle size and acid concentration, the last effect as a result of decreased precipitation of CaSO4 on unreacted particles. Optimum conditions, in which around 99.5% of the ulexite could be dissolved, were a reaction temperature of 60 degrees C, a solid:liquid ratio of 1:8 g/ml, an acid concentration of 8 mol/l, particle size smaller than 425 micrometres, a stirring speed of 52.33/s, a reaction time of 1 800 s, a calcining time of 3 600 s and a calcining temperature of 170 degrees C. These conditions, determined by the Taguchi method, are reproducible in a commercial production environment

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

A study was carried out to determine the effects of adding CaCO3, Fe, Al and CaSi2 to the ladle, rather than to the raw materials, in order to increase the concentration of Ca, Fe and Al in the final product to meet customer specifications at Simcoa's Kemerton plant in Western Australia. LA-ICP-MS, SEM-EDXRA and ICP-AES analysis of samples and controls showed that the technique is suitable for controlling minor element concentrations. The damage zone behind a typical smooth-wall blast in the open pit was assessed by visually examining diamond drill core to identify blast-induced cracking, mapping core rock quality designations to identify changes in fracture frequency and conducting uphole seismic testing to determine changes in rock mass characteristics. The results from the three techniques show reasonable correlation. They suggest that major damage, in the form of fracturing of intact rock, occurs at least 7 m behind the smooth-wall blast and significant damage, in the form of opening and extension of calcite-filled fractures, at least 12 m from the blast. At greater distances the dominant damage mechanism is the loosening of existent joints within the rock mass. In the trachytes at El Soldado these damage mechanisms correspond to peak particle velocities of 2 000, 900 and 500 mm/s respectively

Paper presented at the conference on Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. Paper originally entitled: Processes in a newly discovered sulphide-PGE mineralisation in Norway. The Stormyrplutten mineralisation is hosted by a minor tholeiitic metagabbro of low-Ti composition intruded at a high level in the volcanic lithology. It is thought to be the subvolcanic counterpart of submarine basalts generated during an extensional episode of ensimatic arc evolution. The sulphide-PGE mineralisation occurs as stratabound pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite disseminations with average grades of 376 ppb Pd, 313 ppb Pt, 40 ppb Au, 0.5% Cu and 0.08% Ni in a deposit 15-25 m thick. Locally the PGE content peaks at 2 ppm over 1 m. Microprobe analysis isolated 14 different platinum-group minerals, dominated by sperrylite, temagamite and borovskite and occurring as 1-20 micron compounds embedded in the main sulphide minerals or along the sulphide/silicate grain boundaries. Mantle-normalised plots reveal strong depletion in Os, Ir and Ru and enrichment in Pt, Pd, Cu and Au. The general decrease in Pd and Pt and increase in S up through the stratigraphy is similar to PGE distribution in the Darwendale subchamber of the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe, and may reflect strong fractionation of Pd and Pt in favour of the first droplets of sulphide melt; two reversals of the trend at the 4 and 12 metre levels represent replenishment with fresh magma and repetition of the cycle. In contrast to the Darwendale system, Cu and Ni also show peak concentrations in the first-formed liquids and Pt appears to have fractionated more strongly into the sulphide melt than Pd

The process for bio-remediation of sulphidic slag (BROSS) operates at 45 degrees C in a neutral (pH 7), aerobic aqueous environment in which sulphide in the slag is converted to sulphate. A two-stage version has been developed that involves quantitative chemical pre-oxidation of total sulphide to thiosulphate, followed by complete biooxidation of thiosulphate to sulphate. Ferric hydroxide, also produced, acts as a flocculant in the bioreactor effluent, concentrating heavy metal precipitates in the thickener as a sludge which can be returned to the smelter. The process has a high sulphate production rate and low acid and nutrient consumptions. Microorganism growth is the rate-limiting stage, requiring a minimum liquid residence time in the bioreactor of about 7 h. Although large quantities of oxygen are needed, sufficient gas mass transfer can be attained in an air-lift reactor. Products are an aqueous stream containing sodium sulphate with only trace levels of toxic heavy metals and a benign, toxic metal-containing sludge

The organisation's mission is to promote research and technological development in processes relevant to the minerals industry by providing expertise, developing and managing jointly funded projects, undertaking commissions and education and establishing and maintaining research and development networks. It was responsible for the administration of the Mining Technology 2000 national programme to reduce production costs per metallic unit by 50% over 5-8 years, which involved 120 projects in all. Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Ore deposition was related to three major stages: continental rifting and separation (Vendian-Late Cambrian), convergence (Late Cambrian-Early Silurian) and collision (Early Silurian-Devonian). The first stage included deposition of volcanogenic massive sulphide Zn-Cu and stratabound or stratiform Fe and Zn-Pb(-Cu) on continental margins, as well as less economic Nb and Fe in carbonatites, U, Mo, Ni and V in Alum Shales and orthomagmatic Cr, Fe-Ti and Ni(-Cu). The numerous volcanogenic massive sulphides formed during convergence included Early Ordovician Cu-Zn, mature-arc Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe-oxide deposits, Besshi-type deposits dominated by Cu or Zn in gabbro-intruded sediments and minor Cu-Ni(-PGE), Cu-Mo and skarn deposits. The collisional stage is represented by epigenetic deposits including sandstone Pb deposits (Pb, Zn, Ba, F and Cu) and minor vein deposits with variable Au, Ag, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Sb, W and Mo

The wastes from marble extraction in the Thasos- Kavalla-Drama region of northeastern Greece could be utilised as a new source of high-quality white carbonate fillers for the European market. Large deposits, satisfactory properties, acceptable processing costs and environmental benefits are among the factors that would have a positive bearing on a proposal for their use in this way. DTH, the waste arising from dolomitic marble quarrying operations on the island of Thasos, appears to be the more suitable material than DA waste from Nikissiani on the mainland because of the lower cost of primary grinding and the higher production rate of ultrafines with a mean particle size of 5 micrometres (the optimum size for filler properties in the case of both DTH and DA), its superior whiteness, the benefits that such use would bring to a very severe and complex environmental problem and the lower transport cost

This paper outlines the the methods currently being used in the West Wales Area for preventing the occurrence of any outbreak of spontaneous combustion. Stress is placed on the importance of correlating the position of a Rider Seam which is prone to spontaneous combustion. The recent introduction of the UNOR Recorder has contributed to the ability to monitor the CO content of the general body of the air during any incident. The use of modern sealants and improved methods of applying them have enabled the few instances of spontaneous combustion in South Wales to be treated promptly and efficiently. The authors describe the current spontaneous combustion problems at two collieries.
