Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are formed by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn34+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

Low- to intermediate-temperature, diffuse-flow hydrothermal fields and associated mineral precipitates have been found at many locations along oceanic spreading centers, back-arc basin spreading axes, and midplate hot-spots. However, this type of hydrothermal field has not been found in oceanic fracture zones until recently. We mapped and collected samples from an active hydrothermal field in the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ) located in the northeast Pacific. The BFZ connects the Gorda and Juan de Fuca spreading centers and is divided into east and west segments by Cascadia Depression, a small spreading center. Small pull-apart basins occur along both the east and west segments. A complex set of basins near the western end of the BFZ includes from east to west, Surveyor Depression, East Blanco Depression (EBD), and West Blanco Depression. The hydrothermal field described here is located in the EBD.

Geochemical exploration for marine placers involves the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geochemical data. Recent technological advances such as in-situ analysis systems and microcomputers have greatly improved our ability to acquire and process data, but their full benefits cannot be realized until we also develop improved methods for reducing and interpreting large amounts of raw geochemical data. Toward this end, our research has sought to identify existing and/or develop new geostatistical techniques for use in marine placer exploration. Each technique has been tested by evaluating its performance in the analysis of existing data sets. The data sets typically include the results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected platinum and gold placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Results to date indicate that three geostatistical methods (subpopulation partitioning analysis, comparative factor analysis, and end-member compositional factor analysis) are useful in identifying elemental groups which can serve as "pathfinders" in the search for marine placers, and are also helpful in discerning the generic geochemical basis under lying observed statistical correlations between pathfinder elements and placer minerals. During the last few years autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology has evolved from concept demonstrators towards commercial products. The driving forces are the move for energy exploitation towards deeper waters, naval applications and the Internet driven need for more intercontinental underwater communication cables. Other applications emerging for the future will be within environmental research and monitoring and deepwater exploration. Deepwater developments beyond the continental shelf will require the same level of survey data quality and intervention access as established for shallow water. The potential for cost savings is two folds. Firstly, there is a reduction in the survey cost it self and secondly there is a considerable cost saving by avoiding over design of subsea installations due to lack of sufficient documentation of the field. In this scenario, there is an increasing understanding that underwater robotics and in particular AUVs will play an important role in future survey and subsea engineering work. The AUV as a free swimming underwater survey sensor carrier has several advantages compared to cable controlled ROV?s and deep towed systems: The paper prepared for the ?Underwater Mining Institute 2003? on Jeju Island, Korea will focus on the HUGIN AUV concept and field results to date.

Marine minerals are more than an academic curiosity as they represent the most significant global source of mineral materials for economically and ecologically sustainable development for the future. Minerals research is traditionally carried out by industry and thus, in the United States at least, applied research in marine minerals may not get the share of government funding or attention that more exotic programs for space exploration or future global disasters engender. Two recent events have significantly changed the status of marine minerals. Discoveries made in the last thirty five years indicate that the potential for mineral occurrences in the oceans and seabeds, area for area, is as high as for terrestrial lands. On this basis the global mineral resource base has been recently increased by a factor of four of which three quarters is underwater. The recently enacted Law of the Sea has mandated what is probably the most far reaching re-distribution of natural resources in human history, and has resulted in a peaceful subdivision of seabed jurisdictions between the coastal nations of the world which should significantly affect future mineral markets and the balance of economic powers. Significant applied research efforts are ongoing for marine minerals as an adjunct to commercial production in southern Africa for diamonds; and in many other parts of the world for sands for beach and coastal protection. Forward planing, including research and development activities focussed on future commercial production of metalliferous oxides, continues in Korea, China, Japan, India, and with lesser activity, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the CIS. Annual expenditures for this work amount to millions of dollars. In all cases the environmental aspects of commercial produc¬tion are a significant part of the research. Geologic studies on the occurence and distribution of metal sulfides at plate boundaries continue on a regional basis in the Pacific.

Msjflkcisokng During the past sixteen years, GNS Science has developed a number of radiometric methods for dating massive sulfide samples from submarine arc and back-arc volcanoes. This has improved our understanding of the formation of these hydrothermal systems, the frequency and duration of their activity, and assisted marine mineral exploration companies in assessing the economic potential of these deposits that can be rich in copper, zinc and gold (up to 90 ppm Au in some chimneys). The radiometric dating methods that we employ utilize radium isotopes that are extracted from the host rocks without their parent thorium isotopes, by ascending, hot, acidic hydrothermal fluids. When the hydrothermal fluid discharges into cold seawater, chemically similar barium and radium co-precipitate as barite, a common mineral contained within the black smoker chimneys that grow upwards from the seafloor. From the onset of mineralization, the isotopes 228Ra and 226Ra (with half-lives of 5.75 yrs and 1600 yrs, respectively) begin to decay, so that the 228Ra/226Ra and 226Ra/Ba values decrease with time. Thus, samples can be dated using these ratios once the initial values, i.e., the values at the onset of mineralization, have been established, ideally from active chimneys. 228Ra decays to 228Th (half-life 1.91 yrs) and from the 228Th/228Ra values, the growth-rate of individual chimneys can be estimated. The isotope 210Pb (half-life 22.3 yrs) is occasionally used for dating the mineralization, although several samples from a chimney are needed to determine an age from the 210Pb grown from 226Ra, using the isochron technique.

Borehole Mining (BHM), a remotely-operated waterjet mining method (Figure 1), has recently achieved two major milestones. It was, for the first time, applied to the extraction of manganese ore and at temperatures below freezing. The 1St stage is a demonstration test that is now underway just north of Emily, Minnesota, where the manganese ore is located 100-160m below the surface and its reserves are estimated to be in excess of 500,000 tons. The deposit was discovered over 60 years ago but, due to the fragile and sensitive nature of this Land of 10,000 Lakes (nickname for the State of Minnesota) and strong environmental restrictions, the iron/manganese reserves were deemed unrecoverable and remained untouched until late 2010 when permission for a single-hole demo-test was issued by the local Department of Natural Resources.

INTRODUCTION Efficient exploration methodologies for base metal deposits have huge benefits for future deep sea mining endeavours, and underwater hyperspectral imaging (UHI) has been variably demonstrated to have applications in the identification and characterisation of mineralisation on the seafloor for both nodules and seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) (Dumke et al., 2018 and 2017 respectively). Due to growing resource requirements (Singer, 2017), SMS deposits are considered to be increasingly significant sources of copper and zinc, as well as silver and gold. This style of mineralisation is currently occurring at active hydrothermal vents (black and white smokers) but now-inactive sites also have the potential to be large mineral deposits. As such, the development of novel methodologies to detect both on-going and extinct mineralisations are of high importance. Geological setting During the MarMine cruise (Ludvigsen et al., 2016), non-mineralised host rock, low grade ore and high grade ore grab samples (Snook et al., 2018) was collected by ROV from the Loki’s Castle deposit (Pedersen et al., 2010), located on the Mohn’s/Knipovich junction on the ultra-slow spreading Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR), at a depth of approximately 2300 m. This material has been characterised as part of the MarMine project (e.g. Snook et al., 2017), and, by imaging compositionally constrained material, the measured hyperspectral responses can be used to generate a library for identification of deposits on the ocean floor. UHI technology Remote sensing with hyperspectral and multispectral technologies has seen wide use in prospecting for ores and hydrocarbons on land (Van der Meer et al., 2012). Iron oxides and sulphides have low blue reflectance and high red reflectance in the visible spectrum. The ratio between these two pairs has been used in exploration for terrestrial deposits of hydrothermal origin (Sabins, 1999). This discrimination typically also includes wavelengths exceeding the visible spectrum (1.5µm – 2.5µm). These wavelengths are typically not utilised underwater because infrared wavelengths and higher are rapidly attenuated in water. However, discrimination based on the full shape of the spectral response in the visible light (350nm – 800nm) may still be possible (Bolin and Moon, 2003). Resolving the endmembers from the spectral responses requires prior knowledge about the optical properties of the materials, i.e. their reflectance. These reflectances can be obtained in a controlled environment, where the spectra of the lamps, wavelength- dependent attenuation in water and scattering of light can be accounted for (Johnsen, 2013).

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone. Seafloor massive sulfides have been a subject of interest for profitable commercial mining these ten years. Because of the higher Au, Ag, and Cu contents, they have received much attention as immediate commercial mining targets by private companies and nations. Some of them already proposed the technologies necessary for the commercial mining. However, the technologies for survey, excavation, lifting, and ore dressing have not yet well been examined from viewpoint of the economy. In this presentation, the authors present some key factors and improvements for better economy in the mining.

India?s interest in the resources of the deep seabed particularly the manganese nodules in the Indian Ocean can be traced back to the Indian Ocean Expedition of 1960 ? 65. The collection of Manganese Nodule samples from the Indian Ocean in January 1981 aroused considerable interest within the scientific community. Following several surveying expeditions, the Central Indian Ocean was identified as the most promising area for exploitation. India was accorded ?Pioneer Investor? status and further research and development programs were launched to establish the techno-economic viability of deep seabed mining. India has also shown considerable progress in the field of development and testing of methods for processing the nodules. The Department of Ocean Development manages the program.

After verification of methodology and testing of prototype systems during 2005/06, Nautilus Minerals expanded their Papua New Guinea (PNG) operations to a full commercial exploration program in 2007. Included was the deployment of sensors and survey systems to locate, characterize and verify massive sulfide deposits with potential as mine sites within the tenements held by Nautilus in PNG. This presentation discusses some of the gear developed and operated during the 2007 PNG investigation.

The China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) conducted a topographic survey in its deep seabed claim area with the SeaBeam system in 19475. After analyzing the data, it was determined that there is a group of living things several hundreds of meters in depth that significantly affect the sound waves in the frequency range of interest. We will attempt to investigate more about such influences. Physical model testing is an important means for studying the theory, and for development of the technology for geophysical prospecting. Because the manganese nodules are distributed over the sea floor in irregular patterns, it is hoped that study of the acoustic properties of manganese nodules by means of physical model testing can improve interpretation of the data of the multi-beam system and the SeaBeam system. This will provide a more reliable basis for delimiting the mineral site and evaluating the reserves in the Pioneer area of China.

"INTRODUCTIONThe area beneath the seafloor preserves valuable resources that are inevitable to sustain our industrial society. Hydrocarbon resources such as petroleum and natural gases are one of the representative examples, which have been mined over a century (Brandt et al. 1998). In addition, submarine resources such as methane hydrates, ferromanganese crusts, and metal deposits of hydrothermal origin have long been known (Rona 2003; Kvenvolden and Rogers 2005), although methods of their mining have not yet been developed. All of these resources are distributed heterogeneously, and various exploration techniques have been developed and examined. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is conducting a project on the development of exploration methods of these unexploited resources (Urabe et al. 2015; also see http://www.jamstec.go.jp/sip/images/pamphlet_e.pdf). The present study particularly focuses on our attempt on the developing an exploration method of hydrothermal ore deposits.Seafloor hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with submarine volcanoes of mid-ocean ridges, hot spots, and island arcs, and back arcs (Hannington et al. 2010). Active hydrothermal systems discharging high-temperature fluids can be detected above the seafloor as anomalies of temperature, turbidity, and acoustic impedance (e.g. Kasaya et al. 2015). However, because of the temperature limitation of mining (Boschen et al. 2013), the target of mining may be extinct and probably buried. To explore buried hydrothermal ore deposits from the vast seafloor area, geophysical surveys that can obtain information below the seafloor must be required. Several techniques including magnetic, electrical, and gravitational methods have been developed (e.g. Jones 1999; Kowalczyk 2008). Although physical properties taken by these methods are sensitive to the presence of hydrothermal deposits, difficulties are sometimes encountered. For example, anomalies of magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity, which characterize the presence of ore deposits, may be found above non-hydrothermal bodies such as volcanic bodies and reservoirs of hydrothermal fluids (e.g. Honsho et al. 2016). Thus, combinations of multiple methods must be used to specify the existence of buried hydrothermal ore deposits"

Recently, the Korean government prepared a strategy for deep seabed mining, which consists of three stages for 20 years until 2010. The first step of the program is focused to conduct deep seabed exploration until 1993. The apparent "hurry-and-spend to catch-up" policy that the Korean government has shown in deep seabed mineral exploration was motivated by an effort to qualify a prerequisite requirement to be a pioneer investor as a developing country under the terms of Resolution II and the New York Understanding. Since 1983, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) under the auspices of the Korean government has carried out deep seabed mineral exploration. The KORDI had a joint exploration program with USGS from 1989 to 1991 aiming to evaluate the potentiality of manganese nodule in the western part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone as well as that of manganese crusts in the western Pacific. In 1992, Korean government accelerates its program by the confirmation of national policy and the equipment of new built research vessel, Onnuri-Ho. The RIV Onnuri-Ho is about 1400 G/T, which is equipped with various advanced instruments including GPS, multi-beam echosounder (Seabeam 2000), multi-channel seismic system, and MDM system.

Every year approximately 22 million tonnes of marine sand and gravel are dredged form British waters. The eastern English Channel (EEC) contains substantial reserves, a proportion of which have been identified by the aggregates industry for potential future exploitation. The main aim of this study is to produce broadscale marine habitat maps of the EEC area. The UK aggregates industry has formed a consortium of representatives (the eastern English Channel Association), and have sponsored an initial baseline survey and follow-up sampling programmes as part of a Regional Environmental Assessment (REA) covering a patchwork of aggregate prospecting areas. To complement this effort, a large-scale geophysical survey was conducted in 2005 to place the REA in a wider spatial context and, thereby, to help assess the environmental significance of any future impacts arising from commercial aggregate extraction over the broader region of the EEC.

Fine-scale geochemical, mineralogical, and structural variations in ferromanganese crusts are believed to be the long-range records of paleoceanographic conditions and geological events on the small to global scales in the world oceans, which is useful in reconstructing marine environment. The chemical profiles of thick hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts and nodules were determined by ICP/ES at 2-3 mm intervals at several locations over the Japanese Islands, Magellan Seamounts, Marshall Islands, and South Pacific Basins, together with Be-10 dating. We found general trend of Co enrichment (or high ratio of Co/Mn) in the upper layers of crusts, or outer layers of nodules, which formed in younger period probably after the late Miocene. This general trend of higher Co concentration in the surface may be true over the western to the Pacific, but local variations in growth patterns and shorter-range fluctuations in chemistry and structure were found as well. The growth rate is sometimes three times faster at the shallower depth even in a single seamount. The in-depth fluctuation of Co is well correlated with the ratios Mn/Fe ratio and Ce/La, suggesting changes in redox conditions during the growth of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. Recently, characterized by fast development high- and nano-technology, demand for rare and trace metals has increased. One of such metals is gallium. Gallium compounds, mainly GaAs, are used in medicine, to manufacture optoelectronic devices, microwave techniques, devices of solar power and infrared optics, etc. The basic gallium industrial deposits are known only on land. There are bauxites (50 ppm), nepheline rocks and ores (36-38 ppm, minerals concentrators are nepheline and sodalite), Zn-Pb-Cu ores (5000-12000 ppm, minerals concentrators are gallite, germanite, sphalerite, bornite), sulphide-polymetallic and Pb-Zn ores (10-32 ppm, minerals concentrators sphalerite, chalcopyrite) (Vershkovskya et al., 1998). High concentration of gallium are observed in hydrothermal massive sulphides of a Mid-Okinawa Trough (The South Chinese Sea) and Sujo seamount (The Philippine Sea) (Noguchi et al., 2007). As it is known, deep-sea massive sulphides and associated Fe-Mn crusts are products of hydrothermal fluid discharge. High-temperature massive sulphides precipitation are the first, and low-temperature Fe-Mn crusts deposition is the last process of hydrothermal mineralization (Cronan, 1982). Hydrogenic crusts and nodules of the World ocean are characterized by low concentration of Ga, close to clarke (19 ppm) (Kobaltbogatye.., 2002). Hydrogenic crusts from the Sea of Okhotsk are exception, because Ga concentrations are exceeded clarke in 3,5 times (Mikhailik, et al., 2009). Complex studying of Fe-Mn crusts from deep-sea basins volcanic seamounts of the Sea of Japan has shown their hydrothermal-sedimentary genesis (Mikhailik, 2009). High gallium concentration (up to 850 ppm) was established in these crusts by ICP-MS (Agilent 7500C). Microprobe research (JXA-8100) of samples Fe-Mn crusts has not revealed the gallium minerals concentrators. It suggests that, gallium in Fe-Mn crusts of the Sea of Japan is sorb substance.

On 13 July 2000, the ISA adopted the Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Polymetallic Nodules in the Area. The first contracts for such exploration were issued by the ISA the same year. The duration of exploration contracts is 15 years, after which the contractors are expected to go into exploitation. In 2013, ISA with the LTC initiated the process for developing the regulations for exploitation, and are currently working on the first draft to put forward for the Council. In the meantime, the first seven exploration contracts have expired, and been given five years extensions in order for the contractors to get ready to apply for exploitation contracts. According to the current draft of the exploitation regulations, an application for an exploitation contract shall be accompanied by all data acquired during the exploration phase, a mining plan, a financing plan, and a set of environmental plans (i.e. an environmental impact statement, an emergency response and contingency plan, environmental management and monitoring plan, and a closure plan). All of these plans have to be based on substantial scientific and technical data and information. The mining plan requires geoscientific data regarding the mineralogy and grade of the nodules, and the physiography of the mining site as a basis for the consideration of critical aspects, inter alia for making reliable resource estimations, design the mining operations, and forecast revenues. The environmental plans require the input of a substantial set of bioscientific data and information on the exploitation technology in order to establish base-lines, and monitor and evaluate the effects of the mining operations. Under the exploration contracts, such scientific data have been acquired and reported on an annual basis to the ISA. Some testing of mining equipment and experiments on the extraction of metals have also been performed by some contractors. These scientific and technical data from the exploration phase will be the basis for the for the preparation of the studies, plans and documents required for the applications for exploitation. No time frame is specified for the preparations of an application but it must be assumed to take place before the expiration of the exploration contract.
