Venting on ultraslow spreading ridges is far more abundant then previously predicted, and the discrepancy between observed and predicted vent field density may imply that non-magmatic heat sources are common along these ridges (Baker and German, 2004; Escartin et al., 2008; Rona et al., 2010; German et al., 2016). In this study we have estimated the flux from two hydrothermal vent sites situated on the slow to ultraslow spreading Mohns Ridge at the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system (AMOR). The flux estimates have been made using the primordial isotope 3He in the non-buoyant plume above the Loki’s Castle vent field at the northern termination of the Mohns Ridge, and from the Jan Mayen vent fields area situated close to the southern termination of the ridge. Primordial 3He enters the oceans through degassing and mixing with hydrothermal fluids eventually to be discharged at the ocean floor primarily at hydrothermal vent sites and submarine volcanic eruptions (e.g. Clarke et al., 1969; Lupton and Craig, 1981; Lupton, 1998). Once introduced into the water column the concentration will only decrease by dilution due to its conservative behavior in the water column. Water column samples were collected using a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) probe (911plus Seabird) with a Niskin water bottle rosette. The water column above the Jan Mayen vent fields (JMVF) was sampled in the years 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (82 samples) and the water column above the Loki’s Castle vent field was sampled in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 (116 samples).

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

The cost of an offshore exploration project is mainly dependent on the size of the vessel engaged for the work and increases dramatically with increasing size. Of the various factors influencing vessel size, the type and size of the sampling equipment is typically the principal consideration. This scenario is particularly true of shallow sampling programs employing a vibracore system. The problem develops when certain bottom materials such as densely packed fine sand require sampling. This type of material being one of the most difficult for the standard vibracore systems, with integral core liner, to penetrate to a reasonable depth of some five to seven meters. The problem is mainly related to the excessive cross sectional area of the cutting bit required to accommodate the core liner. The typical solution has been to apply more power to the vibracore drive head which results in a considerable scale-up for the entire system with attendant increase in vessel size. In order to reduce operating cost, M.M.R.I. has developed several systems for deployment from vessels in the 20 meter range. Two systems are modifications to the basic vibracore and a third is a vibralift system. Basically, one of the vibracore units is employed where core liners are required, utilizing a special jet bit designed to reduce the cutting pressure on the bit while not affecting the integrity of the core. From an interesting and intriguing scientific research topic, deep sea mining has altered into an interesting mining prospect over the last years. Ten years ago most of the focus was on geological investigations, searching for typical deep sea deposits and getting answers on where we can find them and how these deposits were formed. At this moment we know much more about the interesting deposit possibilities and with our quest for minerals, metals and other materials to feed global economic growth, answers as to the technical and economic feasibility to mine these deposits are sought. This is not a new phenomenon as we already witnessed such question late 1970?s and early 1980?s. Most of the focus was on mining manganese nodules and brines in the Red Sea driven by the report of the Club of Rome that predicted shortages in near future at that time. Development went different, but later in the 1990?s a rival of interest could be noticed for mining deep sea deposits.

Active development of the exploration and further exploitation of deep-sea minerals requires special emphasis on the protection of the marine environment. The complexity of this subject lies in the fact that potential impact and effects of future mining activity are not completely known. One of the main sources of potential impact near the seafloor, as it expected, would be a generation of sediment plumes, their dispersion and redeposition of sediment. Meanwhile, their dimensions, rates of dispersion and redeposition are a big issue. Other plumes are expected in the surface layer as a result of discharges of processing waters and particles after sorting on board of mining vessel, and their features are also not clear. At the same time, understanding of these aspects would be crucial for definition of environment impact area, delineation and designation of different types of protected areas (Areas of Particular Environmental Interest, Impact and Preservation Reference Zones) and future assessment of environmental impacts. Attempts to address these issues demonstrated wide variations between the data of field experiments on the one hand and the results of analytical and numerical models on the other. According to in situ measurements, plumes were detected at a distance vary from one to less than 20 km [e.g., Burns et al., 1980; Sharma et al., 2001; Nautilus Minerals, 2008 etc.], whilst some models show results up to 100 km [Rolinski S. et al., 2001] and more. It seemed that results of in-situ experiments are preferable, but they were not many indeed. However, these data were used in different investigations rather widely, but their focus, as far as we know, was not on the matters related directly with plumes.

"INTRODUCTIONPolymetallic nodules from the Clarion and Clipperton Zone (CCZ) within the equatorial NE Pacific Ocean show high concentration of economic important strategic metals such as Ni, Cu, Co, Mo and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The content of those metals in nodules is depending on (i) the supply during individual growing periods, (ii) the environment conditions as well as (iii) on different manganese minerals, which occur in nodules. The incorporation of the metals can vary within the structure (incorporated into the structure / over vacancies of the structure) and this can be relevant for the further metallurgical treatment.Mineralogy of Mn-nodules from the CCZ and the incorporation of metalsManganese nodules consist of nm to µm thick layer growth structures (LGS) of different genetic origin (hydrogenetic/suboxic-diagenetic). Those LGS form due to the precipitation of Mn-and Fe-(oxy) hydroxide colloids from the oxygen rich near-bottom water and/or pore water (hydrogenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988) or from suboxic (depleted in O2 <5µmol O2/l; Hein and Koschinsky 2013)) near-bottom water/pore water (suboxicdiagenetic growth; Halbach et al., 1988; Wegorzewski and Kuhn, 2014).In general, metals dissolved in seawater will be adsorbed and complexed on the oxide surfaces according to their different surface charge. The surface charge of the Mn-Fe (oxy) hydroxides depends on the pHzpc (zpc: zero point of charge). In seawater dissolved hydrated cations (Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+) are adsorbed preferentially on the negatively charged Mn-oxide (MnO2 -) surface (pHzpc 2.8). In contrast, negatively and neutrally charged complexes (e.g., Ti(OH4); REE(CO3)2 -, MoO4 2-) are adsorbed on the surface of Fe-oxy hydroxide colloids (FeOOH+) which have a slightly positively charged surface (pHzpc 8.5; Stumm and Morgan, 1981; Koschinsky and Halbach 1995)."

Studies of benthic recolonization in the aftermath of marine aggregate dredging in the U.K. and elsewhere are limited and are largely confined to experimental circumstances. Investigations of the physical and biological status of licensed extraction sites in the U.K. at various times following cessation of commercial dredging are very limited, and so judgments as to the likely progress towards environmental restoration and the time-scales involved continue to be based on predictions rather than real data. This field-based research programme was commissioned to enhance the understanding of processes leading to physical and biological recovery of the seabed following dredging, thereby aiding the identification of practices to minimize environmental harm at licensed sites, and to promote rehabilitation on cessation. The outcome of survey work will have the notable benefit of allowing questions about the present status of locations hitherto subject to commercial exploitation to be answered directly, rather than by inference.

Deep sea tailings placement (DSTP) techniques have been pioneered in Papua New Guinea (PNG): a mining reliant economy in a seismically active region, facing major environmental challenges in the safe handling and storage of mine tailings on land. Scientists at SAMS have researched impacts of DSTP on the marine environment specifically to inform and develop guidelines for the use of DSTP to reduce environmental impact, thereby lowering risk and increasing private sector investment. Guidelines have been established as regulation by the PNG Government providing reassurance to private investors, facilitating an increase in mining exports to 60% of total export. Researchers investigated the effects of DSTP at 2 PNG mines: Lihir Gold Mine which has been actively discharging tailings since 1996 and Misima Mine, closed in 2004 after discharging tailings for 15 years, allowing an assessment of the recovery of the marine environment after tailings placement. Research involved investigating ocean currents and mixing, the behaviour of metals and the effect of tailings on benthic communities including the risk of elevated metal contents entering the food chain. The research established a metal ?fingerprint? of tailings compared to natural sediments, which enabled the transport of fine tailings within the deep ocean to be ascertained.

Detailed geological studies using side scan sonar, bottom sampling and piston cores along the Rio Grande do Sul inner continental shelf and coastline indicate the occurrence of elongate deposits of calcareous shells fragments containing high calcium carbonate content. On the inner shelf these deposits lie at a depth between 15 and 50 meters and have been interpreted as ancient shorelines. They occupy an area of 965 km2 with a economic potential of 1 billion tons. Chemical analyses indicate a mean composition of 34.8% of calcium; 0.16 ppm of fluoride. According to the regional economy such composition make it highly recommended for a variety of uses including poultry feed and cement.

Occurrence of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts has been well documented over inactive seamounts in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. It has been thus believed that the hydrogenetic crusts develop preferentially at water depths between about 800 to 2500 meters. In fact, according to the Manganese Crust Database (F. Manheim, 1988), only two occurrences are known at water depths below 5000 m out of 819 occurrences cited in the database. Unexpectedly, we found typical hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts from deep-sea floors; 1) outcropping old volcanic basement over the Philippine Sea Plate (abandoned spreading centers and subducting old oceanic crusts) and 2) one from the slope of an abyssal hill in the Central Pacific Basin (Cretaceous deep-sea basin) at water depths ranging between 5200 to 6100 meters. We report their occurrences with submersible observations from Shinkai 6K, physical parameters (such as thickness of crusts about 2-4 cm in maximum), chemical composition, petrology of substrate, and results of Be-10 dating for some samples in comparison with typical Co-rich manganese crusts from the Central Pacific seamounts. The preliminary chemical and mineralogical analyses reveal that they are of typical hydrogenetic origin, and typical of iron-manganese oxide mineral, vernadite, slow and probably continuous growth, and lower content of Co than the Central Pacific seamount crusts. The occurrences and nature of the crusts indicate that deep-sea floors are also optimal for the growth of hydrogenetic crust even at 5000 m water depth or deeper, only if oxygenated deep waters are supplied and the sea-floor morphology keeps stable enough for significant geological time period. The Manus Spreading Ridge is located within the EEZ of Papua New Guinea and lies in the Manus Basin ENE of the PNG Island and N of the Island New Britain. The divergent backarc spreading system is caused by the subduction of the Solomon plate in the South under the Bismarck plate in the North along the lineament of the New Britain trench. The rate of divergence is relatively high compared to other back arc spreading systems and amounts up to 12 cm/year [3]. Since submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal circulation as important parts of the oceanic heat transfer system are also dependent on the rate of spreading, hydrothermal fluid venting and respective deposition of polymetallic sulfides can be expected there. In late 1985 first indications for hydrothermal activity were observed on a swell within the central rift valley of the Manus Spreading Centre during a photographic survey of the seafloor by an expedition of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics with the American RV Moana Wave [1]. Detailed geological investigations including successful sampling were first carried out in June 1990 within the scope of the OLGA II research project (conducted by Prof. Tufar, Marburg) using the German RV Sonne equipped with a deep-sea television sledge and Tvcontrolled grab systems. Simultaneously a research cruise with the Russian RV Akademic Mstivlav Keldysh took place using the manned submersible Mir; the findings of the OLGA II cruise were immediately used for planning and organization of the Mir dives [3]. The massive sulphide samples which we used for our geochemical and mineralogical studies originate from the hydrothermal fields 1 and 2 and are from grab stations of the OLGA II expedition [4].

Recent developments have seen AUVs deployed remotely with instantaneous access to data via the cloud. Our goal is to deliver the capabilities of each of these elements and present a cohesive data set with automated processing tools over a cloud based interface. nmanned Technology AUVs The HUGIN AUV System is the most commercially successful AUV ever built. Operated as a single vehicle, or as part of a swarm, HUGIN’s area coverage rate is unrivalled. Equipped with a comprehensive sensor package including Kongsberg’s synthetic aperture sonar, it collects a data set. Some of these data are processed in-mission to enable operators to readily access it when the vehicle is recovered. HUGIN is well suited to mining survey and exploration. Capable of reaching 6000 metre depths and conducting missions greater than 60 hours, HUGIN collects seabed sonar imagery, sub-bottom profiles, laser and camera images plus environmental data, with sensors running concurrently.

Efficient and successful mineral processing is dependent on detailed knowledge of the materials and minerals that are to be separated and concentrated. Common bulk methodologies such as XRD and XRF are fast and easy, and can provide an overview of the mineralogy and bulk chemistry of the material. However, they will not provide any textural information. Knowledge of the often intricate interaction between minerals in seafloor massive sulfide deposits is crucial in plant design for mineral processing. Samples from the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), QEMSCAN, Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). Processing experiments used froth flotation and leaching techniques. The typical line of operation in ore characterization is shown in Figure 1. Mineral processing may be commenced after any stage of ore characterization. However, it is ideal to have completed as many steps in the ore characterization as possible in order to have the most information of the initial feed material. The main economic minerals in the samples are isocubanite (CuFe2S3), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), and sphalerite (ZnS), with minor galena (PbS) and trace amounts of Au and Ag. The minerals show complex intergrowth textures down to the nanometer scale. These samples exemplify the need for advanced microtextural analyses to adequately characterize ore material prior to processing. The complex textures hamper the use of flotation as an efficient technique, due to the inability to sufficiently liberate the different minerals and problems with selectively floating isocubanite. Thus, leaching was the preferred method for extracting metals.

One of the primary responsibilities of the International Seabed Authority?s Secretariat (the Secretariat) is to assess the quantities of metals present in seabed polymetallic nodules in the International Seabed Area under the Authority?s jurisdiction. To carry out this responsibility, the Secretariat periodically undertakes an assessment of the reserved areas in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern Pacific (CCZ) using the data submitted by the registered Contractors and maintained in the Authority?s POLYDAT database. The results of its most recent assessment demonstrated that the information submitted by the Contractors, though satisfactory for some purposes, does not permit the in situ quantities of metals in these areas to be estimated with a degree of confidence that is comparable to many land-based mineral resource estimates. Our strategy is to divide the work into two distinct but closely related efforts; one to draft a Prospector?s Guide that provides a narrative description of the key geological and oceanographic data that may be related to deposit abundance and metal content, and another that we call the Geological Model, that summarizes and documents the quantitative resource assessments accomplished in the project.

(for an oral presentation) Activities for preparing future deep-sea mining offer the unique opportunity to study environmental conditions and anticipate adverse environmental impacts prior to the commercialization of the activity. Until know, environmental research has first and foremost focused on understanding direct impacts occurring at the seafloor or in the water column such as the removal of substrate, the suspension of sediment or the creation of particle plumes. Impacts occurring above the sea surface have thus far rarely been considered. The operation of deep-sea mining equipment, as well as of mining and transport vessels will be associated with a considerable energy demand. In the open ocean, this energy will be provided by heavy fuel oil (HFO), which is the cheapest and most common marine fuel. The combustion of HFO will be associated with the release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Deep-sea mining will thus directly add to already critical air pollution levels caused by international shipping. To contribute to a holistic assessment of deep-sea mining impacts and to address the previously outlined knowledge gap, we present the methodology to quantify the fuel consumption and associated emissions of a potential typical commercial manganese nodule mining operation in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (Fig.1). Using the mine set up and energy demand estimates from a study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy supplemented by information from literature, we anticipate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter and non-methane volatile organic compounds.

In the western Woodlark Basin, propagation of seafloor spreading is occurring directly into the continental crust of Papua new Guinea. The spreading is not strictly in a back-arc tectonic setting, rather it appears associated with microplate rotations related to the complex convergence of the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southeastern Pacific region. Volcanic rocks along the western Woodlark spreading axis range from normal mid- ocean ridge basalts to basaltic andesites with back-arc geochemical affinities. Rare peralkaline rhyolites also occur. Hydrothermal deposits occur at a basaltic andesite volcano located on the neovolcanic zone near its westernmost propagating tip. Franklin Seamount is a 250m-high cone constructed largely of pillow lavas and talus which sits astride a 450m-high ridge of similar lavas oriented subnormal to the spreading direction. At its crest, 2150m below sea level, there is a 100m-deep caldera.

This paper provides certain Southeastern coal-burning utilities with an economic strategy for complying with the sulfur dioxide emission standards set firth by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The strategy takes advantage of the occurrence of vast quantities of manganese nodules on the Blake Plateau offshore Georgia and the Carolinas, a commodity which as been proven to be a highly effective dry sorbent of sulfur dioxide. Using existing technology, manganese nodules could be mined and transported via barge directly to power plant sites, where they would be used as filter material for cleaning sulfur dioxide from the effluents of coal-fired power plants. Completely sulfated filter material could be treated for the extraction of by-product metals such as cobalt, copper, nickel, and manganese. The strategy may well be enhanced by the occurrence of ore grade phosphate rock in the same area of the Blake Plateau. This phosphate rock could be simultaneously mined to effect a reduction in production costs if it is found to be suitable for use as either a direct application fertilizer or as an acidulated superphosphate fertilizer. The manganese nodule-based strategy offers a retrofitting solution for existing power plants that would minimize the capital costs for compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendments and has the added advantage of providing a number of other metal or fertilizer by-products.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes, located between 34°S and 36°30&apos;S were mapped and sampled between April and July 2005, using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mothership R/V Ka&apos;imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, structure of the volcanoes, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, up to seven meters high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C were recorded for these chimneys.

Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). "In 2012 the International Seabed Authority (ISA) established nine “Areas of Particular Environmental Interest” (APEIs) for consideration as future Marine Protected Areas to help preserve the biodiversity of life on the seabed within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) between Baja California, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands. The CCZ is believed to have a high potential for future seabed mining operations. Areas under active exploration contracts in the CCZ, plus the areas currently reserved by the ISA for exploration by developing nations, comprise about 1.9 million km2 of seabed area. The currently designated APEIs consist of more than 1.4 million km2 of seabed. Each APEI includes a central primary conservation area of 200 X 200 km, surrounded by 100-km buffer areas on all sides. The 100-km buffers are intended as a very conservative spacing between the primary conservation area and potential mining activities in adjacent seabed. The selection of these nine 400 X 400 km APEIs, has been criticized as possibly not including sufficient representative habitat similar enough to the potential mining areas (identified currently as the exploration contract and reserved areas administered by the ISA within the region) to ensure protection of the biodiversity that might be impacted by mining.An area to the east of the existing exploration contracts and reserved areas is known to have substantial mineral deposits; it is very similar to the adjacent exploration contract areas in its geology, environmental setting, polymetallic nodule abundance and nodule metal content. Because it is located in the northeastern extreme of the CCZ, this area is also likely to have relatively high densities of benthic life, compared with benthic communities further westward within the CCZ. Many options for the designation of this APEI are possible, but the area designation must accommodate the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and France.This paper discusses why the selected region in the eastern extreme of the CCZ is a good candidate for designation as a new APEI.Keywords: polymetallic nodules, Marine Protected Areas, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Areas of Particular Environmental Interest"
