With its new continental shelf beyond the exclusive economic zone, New Zealand is a country with just 4% of its territory above water. The other 96% is submerged. New Zealand's marine territory covers an area about three-quarters the size of Australia. This territory includes large portions of the Gondwana continent from which NZ separated more than 80 million years ago. This underwater land mass extends from the shores of New Zealand to a water depth of more than 5,000 m, is largely unexplored and is almost certainly the site of many large, untapped oil, gas and mineral deposits. Underwater oil and gas drilling is now a universal activity. Underwater mining is in its infancy and will become a major activity in the future, contributing greatly to the New Zealand economy. New hydrocarbon deposits will undoubtedly be discovered under the ocean floor in regions such as the Great South Basin located off Canterbury and Otago. Mineral deposits are also undoubtedly located within the oceanic crust of this underwater NZ continent. These are as yet unknown and unexplored. The oceanic crust north of the North Island is currently being extended through the subduction of the Pacific plate into the Tonga Kermadec trench and through the growth of a line of submarine volcanoes extending north to Tonga. Active submarine volcanism has led to the growth of ocean floor mineral deposits consisting of polymetallic sulphides with iron, copper, zinc and lesser gold, silver and other metals.

The Myra Falls deposits comprise a complexly metal-zoned polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide district located 90 km from Campbell River in central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The massive sulfide deposits are hosted by subaqueously-deposited rocks of the Devonian age Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. The deposits comprise many individual massive sulfide lenses grouped into several major zones within two main felsic volcanic stratigraphic intervals - the upper Lynx-Myra-Price Horizon and the lower H-W Horizon. The largest of these zones, the H-W and Battle, occur within the H-W Horizon. The first claims in the area of what is now Boliden-Westmin?s Myra Falls Operations were staked in 1917. Early prospecting resulted in the discovery of three massive sulfide showings which eventually became the Lynx, Myra and Price mines. Sporadic exploration was carried out until 1961 when Western Mines Ltd. (now Boliden-Westmin Ltd.) acquired the claims. Subsequent ore definition outlined 1.9 million tonnes of ore (approximately 5 years of mine life) in the Lynx deposit, and mining began in 1966. Pre-mining geological reserves (to January 1, 1997) comprised 6.7 million tonnes grading 3.3 g/t Au, 130.6 g/t Ag, 2.0 % Cu, 1.4 % Pb and 10.2 % Zn for the Lynx-Myra-Price deposits, 17.1 million tonnes grading 2.3 g/t Au, 32.7 g/t Ag, 2.3 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb and 4.2 % Zn for the H-W deposits and 4.2 million tonnes grading 1.1 g/t Au, 27.0 g/t Ag, 2.2 % Cu, 0.5 % Pb and 12.0 % Zn for the Battle deposits. Property-wide production to January, 1996 has been 15.7 million tonnes grading 2.1 g/t Au, 58.7 g/t Ag, 1.9 % Cu, and 5.2 % Zn.

"Sediments in the vicinity of the hydrothermal seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) mounds are characterized by high concentration of metallic particles. They result from a long process of weathering of the primary mineral deposits and have been accumulated in depressions by mass wasting and hydrothermal plume fall-out. We present here the first results obtained on pore waters analyses of such sediments in distinct geological seafloor environments (in low-temperature hydrothermally active zones, on extinct hydrothermal mounds and in a remote depositional channel). Vertical concentration profiles suggest that the pore fluid composition is affected more by seawater circulation compared with hydrothermal fluid flow in all environments. The composition of pore fluids is affected by diagenesis and redox processes in the distal depositional channel where Mn2+ is released at depth with Cu2+.IntroductionMarine hydrothermal fields, hosting seafloor massive sulphides, are potential resources for future deep-sea mining and might become economic reserves for the industries. They are widespread at mid-oceanic ridges, arcs and back-arc spreading centers (Hannington et al., 2011; German et al., 2016). Sediments in the vicinity of these fields can contain unusually high concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu among other metal elements (Shearme et al., 1983). These hydrothermal, or metalliferous, sediments result from a combination of processes such as collapsing and weathering of chimney material, filling of the channels by turbidite-like mass wasting, in situ authigenic mineralization and hydrothermal plume fall-out (Goulding et al., 1998; German et al., 1990). The sediments contain important indicators reflecting the development of the hydrothermal systems. Because of their widespread distribution and metal content, they themselves can be considered potential mineral resources. Circulation of seawater through these deposits, however, often modifies the sediment composition by oxidizing the sulphides into oxyhydroxides and clays causing mobilization of the metals. To address the importance of alteration and diagenesis of these hydrothermal sediments, including the result of seawater circulation, we investigated the post-depositional processes occurring in the hydrothermal sediments at the TAG Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°N), focusing on the mobility of metallic cations in a number of different seafloor environments."

The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel's levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. The present three-year long phase of the SOPAC/Japan Deep Sea Co-operative Mineral Resources Programme [Programme], commenced in 2000. The Programme has been funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), since 1985. Field survey activities and associated data analysis and interpretation, for the Programme, has largely been carried out by the Deep Ocean Resources Development Co., Ltd. (DORD). The Government of Japan has, since 1982, recognised DORD as one of its ? Pioneer Investigators? for manganese nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone . Although the objective of this paper is to present the results of the drilling cruise that was conducted from December 2001 to January 2002, within the North Fiji Basin, in Fiji?s EEZ, it will also seek to provide a broad overview of the results of the cruise conducted within the Cook Islands in May to June 2000, as well as present preliminary results of the cruise conducted in the Marshall Islands in June to July 2002.

A stepwise implementation of seven criteria for screening the physical, chemical and environmental suitability of submarine tailing disposal (STD) at coastal mines is presented. It is expected that similar criteria would be relevant to future deepwater mining. A reconnaissance level study of four preliminary criteria: mine location; coastal bathymetry; feasible outfall locations; and potential for chemical contamination can support or eliminate the prospects for STD. If supportive, detailed, and far more time-consuming hence costly surveys of: environmental background information including oceanography and waste discharge characteristics; projected impacts on other resource uses plus regulatory and community concerns will be essential for environmental protection and to secure the necessary approvals. This review of STD systems on which the proposed screening criteria were based was undertaken by a Cooperative Agreement of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Alaska Field Operations Center with the University of British Columbia.

The big money is backing both manganese nodules and manganese crusts as the most likely deep ocean mining development by 2010, but seafloor massive sulphides of copper/gold/zinc offer an alternative bet for a start-up by 2010. A study of the ?form guide? or comparison of these resources provides direction on which resources are economic candidates for commercial deep ocean mining development by 2010. This paper covers the commercial and technical issues of exploration, resource definition, drilling/sampling, sea bed mining options, mine plans, environmental issues, legal tenure and capital and operating costs (i.e., profitability) of these two mineral types. Nautilus Minerals has just completed a pre-feasibility engineering study of mining sea floor massive copper/gold/zinc sulphides at 2,000 m depth. The Nautilus study reviewed a range of mining and lifting options, settling on tracked continuous drum cutter miners to produce 2 million tons per annum of high grade ore. Capital costs are shown to be at least 30% lower than a land based copper mine of the same production capacity. Likewise 75% of world?s copper would be produced at a higher operating cost that the proposed seafloor mine. This paper then draws on the Nautilus study for comparison with earlier feasibility studies by others on manganese nodule mining to predict the likely directions in deep ocean mining to 2010.

"The slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with a length of ~1.26*104km (Bird, 2003), is the longest mid-ocean ridge on this plant. Separated by the large, left-stepping Equatorial fracture zones, it then be divided into two approximately equal-length parts: Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (NMAR, ~6292km) with an average spreading rate of 24mm/yr, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR, ~6332km) of 33mm/yr (calculated from PB2002 model, Bird, 2003). Previous works (e.g. Fouquet 1997, Hannington et al., 2011) suggest that slow-spreading ridge could support hydrothermal activities and further favorable for the development of extensive seafloor massive sulfide deposits (SMS). Unlike the NMAR for which large part has been explored for SMS (Hannington et al., 2011; Beaulieu et al., 2015), the SMAR is amongst the least hydrothermal explored spreading ridges until now (Haase et al., 2005, Beaulieu et al., 2015), though both of them show significant similarities in terms of spreading rate, ridge morphology, segmentation, etc. (Macdonald et al., 2001, Sandwell et al., 2014, Tucholke et al., 2008).Before this work, several hydrothermal cruises had been to SMAR since British and German programs starting in 2002, some hydrothermal fields, along with systematic geophysical data, were newly investigated, and types of geologic setting that can host hydrothermal activity were firstly identified (e.g. German et al., 2008; Haase et al.,2005; Haase et al.,2009; Devey et al.,2010; Schmidt et al.,2011).."

Drilling into an active hydrothermal system linked to convergent-margin felsic magmatism is a listed priority of the Ocean Drilling Program that addresses several fundamental geoscience issues. Solid and fluid products of felsic rock-water interaction, and the consequences for global chemical fluxes and for ore deposition, should differ from those in basaltic mid-ocean ridge environments already successfully tested by Legs 106, 139, 158 and 169. So, too, will fracturing controls on fluid pathways, and sources for metals and ligands. Researching the subsurface volcanic, structural/hydrologic, and mineralisation/alteration architecture of a drilled felsic-hosted system also has economic implications, especially for land¬based mineral exploration. A first-order hypothesis to be tested states that fluids derived from volatile-rich magmas are more important than recirculated seawater in convergent-margin hydrothermal systems - economic geologists increasingly appeal to this for creating "world-class" massive sulfide orebodies. Another hypothesis proposes "subhalative" massive sulfide deposition within hydraulically expanded volcanic products as a factor in generating large orebodies. Many second-order hypotheses such as leaching fractionated volcanics to cause gold enrichment in back¬arc systems also need testing. The thoroughly surveyed, active, PACMANUS hydrothermal field in the Eastern Manus back-arc basin of Papua New Guinea will be the site for ODP Leg 193 commencing in November 2000. It lies near the crest (1655-1750 m) of high-standing Pual Ridge, a 40 km-long edifice of dacite/rhyodacite with basal andesite all having geochemical and isotopic affinities with modern arc volcanoes of nearby New Britain. PACMANUS includes at least three focussed, high-temperature "smoker" sites with Cu+Au-rich massive sulfide deposits, and a field of diffuse, lower temperature venting through intensely altered dacite where modelling indicates significant subsurface mineralisation. Isotopic characteristics of deposits and vent fluids suggest magmatic contributions to the mineralising fluids.

In November 2004, Australia lodged with the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf possible new maritime boundaries in relation to Australia’s continental shelf extending beyond 200 nautical miles from the Territorial Sea Baseline (Colwell and Symonds, 2005). If agreed by the commission, just over half of Australia’s land mass will lie below the sea, and Australia will have one of the largest marine jurisdictions in the world (14.41 million km2). With this jurisdiction comes a responsibility to manage and sustain the marine environment (McConachy, 2006). Knowledge of minerals and their resource potential is part of this responsibility but is generally poorly known (McConachy, 2005).

The Norwegian EEZ contains large areas of interest for SMS exploration along the Mid- Atlantic Ridge, from Jan Mayen to Svalbard. At the same time Norwegian companies engaged in oil and gas activities are in the forefront of subsea development. This makes Norway ideally positioned to take a leading role within marine minerals research and commercialization. In the recent minerals strategy from the Norwegian Government marine minerals was pointed out as one of the strategic areas for the future. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has established a research program in cooperation with Norwegian industry partners to determine the commercial potential of marine minerals in Norwegian EEZ. This presentation will give an overview of the status of marine minerals research and potential in Norway.

A Vertical Transport System (VTS) comprises pump(s), riser string, connectors and hang-off assembly as its main components, but it is the pipe material, riser configuration and installation method that often attract the most discussions.This presentation will feature important VTS design work 2H has done over the years for different stakeholders, and highlight the work carried out as a partner to the EU funded Blue Mining Joint Industry Project.The key challenges faced by a deepwater VTS are:??High riser payload??Large deck space for storing riser joints??Long time to deploy and retrieve riser??Uncertain metocean conditions??Vortex induced vibrations??Weld and connector fatigueIncreasing the water depth further sees the longer and increasingly ‘springy’ riser experiencing axial resonance caused by wave induced vessel heave motions being close to the riser resonant period. This can lead to snatch loading and fatigue failure in the riser.The presentation will discuss the above design issues, analysis requirements and provide guidance on pump/riser selection. Solutions to mitigate the resonant response issues will also be proposed.."

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Inactive sulfide chimneys contain the first primary, free gold grains found at a hydrothermal site on a mid-ocean ridge (P.A. Rona, Y.A. Bogdanov, E.G. Gurvich, N.A. Rimski-Korsakov, A.M. For a period of twenty years - from 1985 to 2005 - the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) have jointly conducted surveys of deep-sea mineral resources in the EEZs of SOPAC’s twelve member countries. The overall Programme has obtained excellent results and has identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources of manganese nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides. The survey cruises have identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources such as: manganese nodules in the Cook Islands; cobaltrich manganese crusts in the Marshall Islands, FSM, and Kiribati; and polymetalic massive sulphides in Fiji. Based on collected samples and acoustic data, inferred resources for manganese nodule, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides, have all been estimated to be about- 200 million tons in the central Cook waters- 200 million tons in the three seamount selected Marshall waters- and 500 thousands tons around the triple junction of the North Fiji Basin.

Two major Kuroko-type deposits and minor sulfide deposits have been found in the middle Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, Japan (Fig. 1). The Hakurei deposit, one of the major Kuroko-type deposits, was recently found in Bayonnaise knoll caldera in the nascent rift zone, which lies 20 km westward of the Sunrise deposit in Myojin knoll caldera on the Izu-Ogasawara volcanic front. The Hakurei deposit is a huge hydrothermal field measuring 500 m by 700 m in plan view. The Bayonnaise knoll caldera is mainly composed of dacite lavas and fragmental material on the caldera wall and rim, and its floor contains sediment composed of pumice, volcanic fragments, and hydrothermal clay. It is associated with a post-caldera dome and has a slightly ellipsoidal caldera rim that measures 3 km by 2.5 km, with about 200 m relief. The water depths of the caldera floor range from about 840 m to 920 m. The Kuroko-type deposit in the Bayonnaise knoll caldera occurs on the southeastern caldera floor where the caldera boundary faults intersect with a N-S-trending normal fault of the rift zone. In the deposit, many sulfide chimneys are generally less than 10 m high, and sulfide mounds are distributed around the caldera floor and on the sloping talus at the foot of the caldera wall. The deposit is buried in part by talus composed of pumice and volcanic fragments. Sulfide chimneys are still active, and inactive ones and their fragments are partly oxidized to reddish material. Chimney sulfides are mainly composed of sphalerite associated with chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and barite, and chemically enriched in Au up to 14 ppm and Ag up to 1400 ppm with major Zn, moderate Ba, and minor Pb, Hg, Cu, and Fe.
