"RESUMELe gisement d 'uranium de Cigar Lake, dans la région de l'Athabasca au nord du Saskatchewan, fut découvert en mai 1981 par Cogema Canada Ltée, opérant pour Ie compte de la ""Waterbury Lake Joint Venture"".Le corps minéralisé. qui est dépourvu de toute expression directe en surface, est situé a la discordance entre les met sédiments du wottaston Group (Protérozoïque inférieur ou Aphébien) et les grès de l 'Athabasca (Protérozoïque moyen ou Hélikien), à une profondeur de 410 a450 m.Fin 1984, Ie gisement était reconnu par 105 sondages minéralisés repartis sur une longueur de 1800 m, pour une largeur comprise entre 25 et 105 m. 11 se présente sous forme d’une lentille aplatie de 5 a30 m de puissance, et montre une remarquable continuité d'ensemble. Une ride ou bombement topographique de la discordance est associée au gisement surtoute sa longueur.A l'échelle régionale, le corps minéralisé à est associe à un corridor structural d’orientation est-ouest, a l'intérieur duquel des facies particuliers aténdance blast mylonitique sont développes dans les formations métapolitiques agraphite du socle métamorphique. Il est entouré par un halo d'altération très important, caractériser Ie développement de minéraux argileux alumino-magnesiens (illite-chlorite).La minéralisation est située, pour la plus grande part, dans les grès d'Athabasca, et se compose essentiellement d'uraninite et de sulfo-arseniures de nickel et de cobalt,De nombreux levés géochimiques et géophysiques ont été effectues dans la région de Cigar Lake. The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sands tone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surf ace.AI the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25 m and 105 m. It has the shape of a flat-lying lens 5 m to 30 m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and latera continuity from the information obtained to date. A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-A I rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite).The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfo-arsenides of nickel and cobalt.Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, although there may be locally a good coincidence. "The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. Bow Valley Industries Limited i conducting an on-going exploration program for gold in Archean, turbidite-hosted iron formations near the Lupin mine on Contwoyto Lake, orthwe t Territorie . Exploration philosophy and practice are modelled on the Lupin deposit where 70% of the gold occurs within laminated pyrrhotitechert. sulphide facie iron formation. Thi i intimately associated with barren to low-grade silicate facie iron formation which i enclosed by predominantly argillaceou meta ediment . This type of mineralization i amenable to exploration through an integrated program of geological and geophy ical surveying, consisting of the following: i) Geological urvey both regional and local to outline area of turbidites and a ociated iron formation. Structural and tratigraphic trends documented during this phase are useful in determining eventual grid configurations. Grids are then mapped and ampled at 1:2000 cale. ii) Magnetometer and gradiometer urvey at the ame scale define strongly magnetic diabase dyke and erratically magnetic portions of iron formation. iii) VLF-EM survey are u eful in outlining conductive trend invariably as ociated with sulphidic or graphitic phase of iron formation. iv) Geological updating and ampling of iron fom1ation based on the geophysical su rveys. This is necessary for the production of a final geologic map and a an adjunct to drill target election. In problematic instances self-potential urveys have documented the pre ence of non-conductive sulphide accumulations, and horizontal loop EM surveys have been used to determine conductor geometry and quality. Target selection is based on a synthesis of the information from all of the above surveys with the results of no single survey being critical to drill decisions. The program is designed to provide first-pass, detailed , cost-effective ground coverage of large areas of highly prospective geology.

The high mobility of gold within the plant kingdom results in detectable accumulations of gold in many plants. Concentrations vary within individuals, among species, and with seasons. From an evaluation of the chemistry of easily acce sible organs of common pecies in the northern forests, it is concluded that alder twigs (or leaves) and conifer bark scales are the vegetation components of greatest use in the earch for concealed gold mineralization. Maximum anomaly enhancement is obtained from twigs collected in the spring. Examples are given of urvey conducted in the La Ronge Domain using 1) jack pine bark (A nglo-Rouyn and Upise Lake areas) ; 2) alder twig (McLennan Lake) ; 3) black spruce bark (Rod Zone near Mallard Lake, and at Waddy Lake) ; and 4) multi-media (Tower Lake). At the latter two sites gold-bearing till is blanketed with late glacial material. Gold enrichment in the plants suggest that the roots are ab orbing gold from the underlying till. Complex processe control the uptake and retention of gold in plants. An understanding of these processes pem1its biogeochemistry to assist in locating near- urface mineralization .

The Star-Waddy Lakes area lies withjn the northeasterly-trending early- to mjd-Proterozoic volcanoseilimentary-pl utoruc belt referred to as the La Range Domllin. In the area investigated the domajn is composed of the Central Metavolcaruc Belt which is bordered by metasedimentary belts of the Crew Lake and MacLean Lake Belts to the northwest and southeast respectively. The boundaries between the Central Metavolcanic Belt and the flanking belts are generally marked by prominent zones of shearing. The volcanosed imentary succession is intruded by a variety of ultramafic to felsic plutons which, on the basis of lithology, field relations and geochronology, can be broadly subdivided into three groups or episodes. These are: a) an 'early' (ea. 1866 Ma), possibly subvolcanic, episode marked by composite intrusions ranging from gabbro-diorite to granite, b) an 'intermediate' (ea. 1854 Ma) plutonic event distinguished by more homogeneous felsic intru ions ; and c) a 'later' (ea. 1835 Ma) event characterized by leucocratic quartz-rich grani te intrusions. The La Range Domain has undergone polyphase deformation with a strongly developed northeast-trending structural grain. Large scale folding is manjfested by large regional sy nforms, arcuate and triangular patterns associated with many of the plutons and by tight to isoclinal folds within the adjacent metasedimentary belts. Inhomogeneous strain characterizes much of the Star-Waddy Lakes area. With strain gradients being typically very steep, zones of high strain consisting of zones of extreme extensional fabrics, discrete shearing, as well as broader zones of cataclasis and structural slicing, are often juxtaposed with areas of relatively minimal deformation . Dilation structures tend to favour these zones of highly contrasting strain. Late, brittle fractures, faults and shear zones are widespread and appear to be particularly important as loci for gold mineralization. Metan1orphic mineral assemblages indicate that upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies conditions were attained. Geological and geochenucal evidence indicates that the Central Metavolcanic Belt evolved in an island arc environment. Metavolcanic rocks from both the Waddy and Star Lakes areas display similar characteristics on variation diagrams (e.g. AFM and the Jensen cation plot) in that the dominant trend is calc-alkaline with some basic to intermediate types having a mildly tholeiitic character. A few samples from the southern end of Lower Waddy lake display komatiitic to basaltic-komatiitic afl'injties. The relatively immobile minor and trace elements (e.g. Ti , Zr, Nb, Y, Cr) provide reliable characterization of the metavolcanics, particularly of the basalts, which have highly distinctive trace element properties. Geochemical patterns for the basalts are similar to those for modem volcanic arc basalts. Low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7017 - 0.7019) are consistent with a subduction-related origin for the volcanics. The major plutons have chemical properties typical of volcanic arc granites and are largely calc-alkaline in character, showing little chemical variation from the volcanics.

The Agassiz Metallotect and the Johnson Shear Zone represent two metallogenetic fea tures located within the northern and outhern belts, respectively. of the Aphebian-aged Lynn Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba . Numerous gold occu rrences are associated with these two regional features . The tratabound Agas iz Au-Ag deposit with 2.9 million tonnes of 5.2 g/tonne Au and 11.8 g/tonne Ag. occurs within the Agassiz Metallotect. The stratigraphic sequence characterizing the Agassiz Metallotect comprises interlayered ox ide. silicate and sulphide facies iron formations, biotite-rich and siliceous siltstones. and a high Mg- i-Cr basaltic rock that ha previou ly been identified as tholei itic picrite. These rocks can be traced in outcrop and by their INPUT and gradiometric signature for 65 km. The Johnson Shear Zone is an ill-defined 35 km long zone of strucwral disruption that crosscuts volcanic. sedimentary and intrusive rocks and contains numerous vein-type gold occurrences. Both of these metallotects are characterized by their low level of exploration activity and as a result offer excellent residual exploration potential. Rock, basal till and vegetation geochemical techniques applied in the vicinity of the Agassiz deposit indicate the presence of trace element dispersion halos associated with the mineralization. The halos define an exploration target larger than the mineralized zone. Gold occurrences within the two metallotects are described with emphasis on the Agassiz Au-Ag deposit . A wide range of gold occurrence-types is documented including syngencticstratabound , epigenetic-replacement and epigenetic-quartz vein .

Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

The Weedy Lake, Tower Lake, and Wedge Lake gold deposits illustrate contrasting styles and different ages of mineralization within the same district. The discovery of these deposits was the result of systematic exploration of gold occurrences noted during research of assessment files. The Weedy Lake and Tower Lake depo its reflect a late-stage gold mineralizing event. The e deposits developed along the same major structural break, and also display simi lar mineralogy and alteration patterns. Mineralization is developed in all the lithologies present. The Wedge Lake property, while having occurrences similar to the Weedy and Tower deposits. has the more important Twin Zone which best fits a volcanogenic exhalative model. The Twin Zone has a complex structural history without a recognizable alteration halo. The setting may be proximal to a hydrothermal vent. Mineralization is hosted within a mixed ulphide/oxide/silicate facies iron formation breccia. and the gold is intimately associated with arsenopyrite. The origin and age of the brecciation is key to understanding the mineralizing event. Traditional prospecting procedures in conjunction with conventional B-horizon soil geochemistry were instrumental in the Twin Zone and Weedy lake disco,•eries. Tower Lake was a prospecting discovery partially defined by previous drill programs. This deposit was also identified by B-horizon oil sampling.

The difference in age, host rock lithology, alteration and style of mineralization indicates a fundamental difference in the format ion of gold deposits in the Flin Flon and Amisk Lake areas. The Flin Flon area contains early quartz-sulfide-gold veins fo rmed within intermittently active fractures and later plutonic hosted deposits thought to be generated in a porphyry system. In the Amisk Lake area two types of gold occurrences are recognized: I) gold-quartzcarbonate- sulfide veins within or flanking fault zones and 2) structurally and stratigraphical ly controlled zones of dissem inated and vein type sulfide-gold mineralization within extrusive and intrusive rhyolite and dacite porphyries. Both types of deposits are set within supracrustal rocks. are accompanied by intense alteration haloes and were formed prior to the major deformation event suggesting an early, epigenetic hydrothermal origin.

The Sulphide-Preview Lakes area is located 45 km northeast of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. It lies within the southern portion of the Proterozoic La Ronge Volcanic-Sedimentary Belt. Two styles of gold mineralization are present in the Sulphide Lake area , stratabound gold mineralization is intimately associated with a pyrite-pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite unit within a sequence of intermediate to felsic volcaniclastics. Past operators established three mineralized zones along this horizon with combined reserves for two of the zones, of about 175,000 tons at 0.22 oz/ton Au. In the Preview Lake area , gold mineralization occurs in variably sheared gabbro/quartz diorite sills within a mixed sedimentary-felsic volcaniclastic sequence. Gold occurs with arsenopyrite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite associated with quartz veins and stringers. A sulphidebearing graphitic argillite unit occurs in close proximity to the mineralized shears. Past operators delineated seven mineralized shear zones, two of which were drilltested. Average gold grades reported are in the 0.1 to 0.2 oz/ton range with erratic values up to 5.0 oz/ton.

Gold is mobilized and precipitated in a wide variety of environments ranging from those of weathering and biological phenomena, to pluton emplacement to deep metamorph ism . But it appear that pervas ive leaching of large rock volumes fo llowed by the focussed di charge of typically low salin ity flu ids is frequently involved. There are great gaps in our knowledge, particula rly with re pect to gold in very high temperature fl uids generated at near Moho depths. But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . Other environment with great potential include those of major thru t fau lt and strike slip fa ult s where large quant ities of fluids are mobilized .

This paper presents preliminary results of a project aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the genesis of gold mineralization in northern Saskatchewan using lithogeochemistry. The properties sampled were: Weedy Lake (B Zone), Waddy Lake (Komis Zone) and Wedge Lake (Twin Zone) in the La Range belt, and the Rio mine in the Flin Flon area. Although the three vein-type deposits rudied here (Weedy Lake. Waddy Lake, Rio deposit) occur in different geological situation . a common gold deposition mechanism appears to have been active at all three location . Hydrothermal fluids carrying sulphur in solution in exces of gold thio-complexes moved through fractured host-rocks until they reached a site where pyrite precipitation wa triggered. As pyrite precipitated, the a/ aAu activity ratio of the fluid decreased. until a critical thre hold was reached and gold thio-complexe were de tabilized . resulting in the co-precipitation of gold and pyrite. The conditions triggering the precipitation of pyrite appear to have been: the abundance of iron in host-rock ~ilicates at Waddy Lake. and temperature decrease upon the reaching of structural trap~ at both Weedy Lake and the Rio deposit. with additional involvement of carbonatizationrelated reactions between fluid and host-rocks for the latter. In addition to pyrite precipitation , potassic alteration of the mafic metavolcanics is observed at Waddy Lake. while at the Rio deposit, the extensive carbonatization of the host-rocks i coupled with the deposition of chlorite that may have been remobilized from the altered mafic host rocks. In both the B Zone at Weedy Lake and the Komis Zone at Waddy Lake, a di tinct vanadium signature give some clue about the direction in which the hydrothermal fluids have moved . and the interpretation made is con istent with the geological ituation in either case. As for the Wedge Lake deposits, the distinct base metals-precious metals a sociation within a sulphide-facies iron formation confirm the volcanic exhalative origin of this gold mineralization .

About 85 % of the 350 tonnes of gold produced by 25 mines in the onhwe t Territories (NWT) since 1935 has come from the Yellowknife-area mines, Con and Giant , which exploit shear zones in Archean mafic volcanic of the Slave Structural Province. Four percent of the total production has been from Archean iron formation-hosted depo its, mainly from Lupin Mine, which today produces more gold than Con and Giant combined and has been primarily responsible for the increase of WT gold output from 5 to 12 tonne per year since 1981. The remaining gold ha been won from the following deposit typesall but the last being in Archean rock : sedimentary-volcanic contact depo its uch a Discovery and Salmita (10 %); turbidite-hosted quartz-vein depo its uch a Camlaren and Ptarmigan (1%); Proterozoic deposits such as Shear Lake and Fox (1#) . All but I% of WT gold has come from the Archean Slave Structural Pro ince, which is also the premiere exploration area for gold deposit types that have yet to be productive in the NWT. These types include stratabound gold in mafic and in felsic volcanic rocks (eg. , at Indin Lake and Courageous Lake, respectively) as well as gold in plutonic rocks (eg. Anialik Gnei Complex). Deposits similar to those in the Slave have al o been found in the Archean Ennadai Belt of the Churchill Structural Province. In the Cordillera. there is potential for placer gold and for gold associated with Cretaceou intrusions.

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .

The Tartan Lake deposit 12 km northeast of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was discovered in March of 1984 during the investigation of a VLF anomaly. The discovery hole intersected 16.83 metres averaging 21 gm Au/tonne. Since then, 99 holes, over 21,000 metres, have been drilled outlining 419,491 tonnes grading 11.79 gm Au/tonne in a di stinct group of mineralized lenses referred to as the Main Zone. Three other mineralized zones are known on the property but no reserves have been allowed for these, the South , East and Base Line zones. The Main Zone consists of seven parallel, east-west striking, quartz lenses. The lenses dip steeply to the north and plunge steeply west to northwest. Lens number l strikes for 160m and extends vertically to the 90m level. Within th is lens there is a 60m interval of low grade materi al. Lens number 2 is located about 5-l0m within the foo twall of Lens number I. Near surface this lens stri kes for 40m, at 200m level the strike length increases to 200 m. To date the deepest mineralization on Lens 2 has been intersected at a vert ical depth of 527m. Five smaller lenses are located in the foo twall of Lens 2 , containing gold va lues similar to the two main lenses but erratically distributed. The South Zone, located 100m south of the Main Zone, strikes east-west fo r l00m above the 100m level. The East Zone, found 230m east of the Main Zone, strikes fo r 80m and may possibly be an ex tension of the South Zone. The Base Line Zone is located 275m south of the Main Zone. Sporadic, but very significant gold intersections have been obta ined1n all three zones. Gold-bearing quartz-ca rbonate tourmaline veins are generally confined to a silicous crystal tu ff hori zon. The crystal tuff exhi bits fi ve distinct types of alteration: silicification, sericitization, ca rbonati zation, chlorit ization and pyritization. Silicification has resulted in a perasive addition of silica and the generation of multiple quartz veins. Sericiti zation is restricted to the crystal tuff. All rock units are pervasively carbonatized . Ankerite is abundant in the quartz veins and within the shear zones, particul arly those located along the chilled margin of a nearby gabbro-diorite intrusion. Chloritization is widely spread th roughout the rock units, while pyritization fo rms a broad alteration halo associated with the orebody. Sulphide accesso ry minerals associated with the gold , whi ch fo r the most part appears to be free, are chalcopyrite and pyrite. Generally, the higher grade gold values are related to an increased content of sulphides in the qua rtz veins. The average sulphide content in the deposit is less than 5 %.

The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

Field evidence for current hypothe e about age and kinematic ignificance of gold-bearing hear zones in the Archean Yellowkni fe greenstone belt is reviewed , and it is concluded that major disagreements between previous workers are a direct result of differences in stratigraphic and tructural in terpretations of the Yellowknife Supergroup. Although goldbearing hear zone appear to be confined to the mafic volcanic pile of the Kam Group. it can be shown that shearing affected all supracru tal rocks, including the Jackson Lake Formation. now con idered to represent the youngest unit of the Yellowknife Supergroup. tructural ob ervations are incompatible with the hypothe is that the hear zones represent loci of ynvolcanic gravity sliding but are consistent with earlier conclu ions that shear zone development commenced with rotation of the volcanic pile and continued as re ult of lateral shortening broadly overlapping with the emplacement of granitoid batholiths. Shear Zones are common throughout the entire green tone belt. yet productive zone are confined to the Yellowknife Bay Formation of the Kam Group and localized where flow abut with a high angle again t the contact of the We tern Plutonic complex. However. no obvious tructural and lithological features have been recognized that are more favorable for gold deposition and distinguish the shear zones and flows of the area around the mines from those of other parts of the greenstone belt. The model that gold wa transported by metamorphic solutions and that hear zones were the firs t-order control for gold deposition provides no explanation for the trong localization of the depo it . As porphyries with elevated gold contents are present in and near ome of the mines. the possibility that gold was deposited from hydrothermal system around fel ic intrusion representing early phases of the Western Plutonic complex should be given erious consideration.
