"In 1985, a crushing plant, located in the feed preparation area of Kidd Creek's copper smelter, was modified. The plant, which originally had treated only copper-bearing materials for the smeller, at a rate of 10 tonnes per hour, was expanded to 40 tonnes per hour capacity and modified to treat silica ores to meet the smelter’s flux requirement and also gold ores from the company's Hoyle Pond property. In the storage area adjacent to the crushing plant a 300 tonne per day gold mill was constructed.This paper outlines the construction and first year of operation of the crushing plant and gold mill with emphasis placed on the capital and operating advantages to be gained by utilizing an existing metallurgical infrastructure.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. copper-zinc-silver orebody is located 24 km north of Timmins, in Northern Ontario . Mining of this massive sulphide de posit commenced in 1966 and, in the ensuing years, a concentrator and zinc plant were constructed at the metallurgical complex, approximately 17 km by rail from the mine site . At this same site, in 1981, a copper smelter and refinery were commissioned. The smelter which utilizes the Mitsubishi smelting process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrate, has been comprehensively described in previous papers.At the time of the smelter construction, a small (10 tonnes per hour) crushing plant was installed in the smelter's feed preparation area. This plant was used to treat the copper-bearing revert material produced by the smelter, and, apart from periods when slags and matte were produced through furnace drainage at the end of each operating campaign, it was generally under-utilized. This fact, together with the requirement to devise a more cost effective method of providing silica flux for the smelting operation, was the basic rationale for modifying and expanding and crushing plan t. At the same time, development at Kidd's Hoyle Pond orebody had progressed to such a stage that a gold mill of 300 tonnes per day was warranted."

A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. "The majority of Ontario's limestone and dolostone production comes from a few Paleozoic carbonate units. In eastern and central Ontario, Ordovician rock units, which are the main sources for production, include the Oxford, Gull River, Bobcaygeon, Verulam, and Lindsay Formations. They are predominantly utilized for aggregate and cement manufacturing, with the Bobcaygeon Formation being used as a source of building stone. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the Silurian Lockport, A mabel, and Guelph Formations are sources for the limestone industry. The largest tonnage of rock extracted by the industry comes f rom these Silurian units, especially the Lockport and Amabel Formations. These units are used primarily for aggregate, although they are also a source for lime. In southwestern Ontario, the Silurian Bertie Formation and Devonian strata, represented by the Bois Blanc Formation, Onondaga Formation, Detroit River Group, and Dundee Formation, contribute to Ontario's production of lime, cement production and crushed stone. The Detroit River Group (Lucas and Amherstburg Formations) is the main source of the lime and cement produced in the province.Northern areas, which may become significant sources for the industry, include Manitoulin Island, the Lake Timiskaming area, and the James Bay Lowland. IntroductionThe Engineering and Terrain Geology Section of the Ontario Geological Survey has undertaken a geological inventory of all active and abandoned limestone and dolostone quarries in Ontario. This geological study, combined with a commercial study of active quarries carried out by the consulting firm of Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl, will provide an up-to-date report on the industry in the province and will be published by the Aggregate Resources Section of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This report will follow the format and style of D.F. Hewitt's Ontario Department of Mines Industrial Mineral Reports and Circulars (Hewitt, 1960, I964a, 1964b, 1964c; Hewitt and Vos, 1972). Examinations of the quarries were carried out by geologists in the Paleozoic I Mesozoic Geology Subsection of the Engineering and Terrain Geology Section, and include, in addition to the authors, R,R. Wolf, V.A . Mazur, and D.K. Armstrong in the summer of 1986."

"The Atlantis-Il-Deep is a stratified metalliferous deposit located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. The metal-bearing mud contains sulphides of zinc, copper and iron with significant amounts of silver, gold and cobalt. A variety of oxide, siliceous and carbonaceous gangue material is also present. Long sediment cores indicate that the thickness of the deposit may reach 25 m, but the average kriged thickness of metal-rich sediments is about 11 m.Mining geostatistics was applied to estimate the Red Sea offshore mineral resources. Experimental semi-variograms were computed along 0 ± 180 degrees and then models were fitted to analyze the mineralization phenomenon. Kriging estimates indicate that 696.330 million t of bulk sediments contain 1.891 million t of zinc, 0.425 million t of copper and 3. 75 thousand t of silver. Gold and cobalt contents were calculated from the analysis of solids in flotation concentrates as 47 t and 5368 t respectively. The significant outcome of implementing geostatistics to the Red Sea brine precipitates is not only for the evaluation of metal resources, but it also provides a useful tool in the optimization of selective dredging of appropriate areas to be mined. IntroductionThe discovery and extensive exploration of hot brines and hydrothermal sediments in the Red Sea median valley revealed the fact that the Atlantis-II-Deep is a potentially exploitable metalliferous mud in the economic sense. Sediments in the mineralized deep are composed mainly of oxides, various types of silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium, silver and gold. The mineral-rich deposit, located at a mean water depth of about 2000 m, has an average thickness of 11 m, and is covered by a brine layer having a temperature of 60°C."

Conversion of hydraulic equipment to fire resistant fluids has been hampered by less than satisfactory component performance and in some cases, catastrophic equipment failure. Concern over identifying possible causes to these problems led to a joint research project between the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper summarizes some of the results and conclusions derived from this joint project. In this study, the research was limited to evaluating the effects of potash contamination on the performance of hydraulic equipment. Two separate types of tests were conducted in order to provide a basis upon which trends could be established. This study concluded that the presence of potash dust in the hydraulic fluid can induce severe wear over relatively short periods of time. It was also deduced that a contaminant free fluid combined with proper fluid maintenance could extend the performance of hydraulic components using fire resistant fluids even under very severe operating conditions, such as elevated pressures and temperatures. Recommendations as to how to achieve this goal and the practicality of doing so are presented.

"Modern signal and power electronics made adjustable-speed AC drives technically feasible and reliable and economically attractive. Cycloconverters are discussed as a proven technology for mine hoists. \IntroductionUntil rather recent technical and commercial advances in power and signal electronics, DC motors were used almost exclusively for applications requiring continuously adjustable operating speeds and torques. More recently, the significantly higher efficiency and the accordingly lower operating costs of AC motors gained importance. An effective and efficient speed control of AC motors requires the control of AC voltage and frequency. Table 1 shows typical applications of adjustable-speed AC drives.CycloconvertersOf particular interest to the mining industry are cycloconverters for hoist drives. The cycloconverter represents by far the simplest, most efficient and most economical means of converting a constant-voltage, constant-frequency supply into an adjustable-voltage, adjustable-frequency supply as required for the speed control of AC drives operating in the frequency range to half of the utility frequency.Cycloconverters feeding synchronous motors or induction motors are ideally suited for slow-speed direct-coupled drives."

"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However , high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives.IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million . Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R ."

"Various methods of leaching are being used by Denison Mines Ltd. Uranium Operations. This study was designed to investigate the flood leaching operation of two parallel inter-connected stopes contained by pressure bulkheads. The teaching muck piles, created from large scale uppers production blasts, are aerated by compressed air lines laid beneath the pile prior to blasting.A SFr, tracer gas, injection technique has been employed to determine the post-blast integrity of the single-ended air distribution system. SF6 was injected into the compressed air line feed to the stopes and collected at borehole exhausts from the stopes in grab-sampling bags. Analyses of the air samples were performed with a gas chromatograph.The system was designed to give a sufficiency of oxygen to sustain bacterial activities used to enhance the leaching recovery in the muck piles. The results obtained indicated that there is a minor anomaly in the distribution system that may not be critical to the operation. Compared to an idealized case, the over-all efficiency of aeration throughout the muck is estimated at over 85%."

"Over 25 years ago, SKEGA pioneered the use of rubber linings in grinding mills and rubber is today widely accepted and almost standard material chosen for Regrind - and Secondary Hills. There are, however, only a few Primary Hills in operation with ""solid"" rubber linings because available materials and designs are often not cost efficient in comparison with steel alloys on a Cost per ton basis and/or downtime for liner replacement would be to a high.In other words, solid rubber has limits as any other material. However, 'SKEGA started to think, why not try to use the best properties of rubber as well as steel and combine the two materials together.Nearly 10 years ago SKECA started to test this concept in Rod Mills. A steel cap was vulcanized on to the leading face of the lifter bars, to be installed close to the feed end head (fig. 1)."

"Cluff Mining operates the Phase II uranium mine and mill at Cluff Lake, northern Saskatchewan. During the Phase I operation, uranium tailings were generated by acid leaching of a gravity concentrate and high-grade ore for uranium recovery. The pre-treatment gravity process, as well as the high-grade nature of the ore, led to a concentration of gold in the tailings which justified the installation of a small circuit to recover the contained gold. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-in-pulp, gold recovery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and typical operating parameters are provided. 1.0 INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 percent by Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) and 80 percent by Amok Ltd./Ltee. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300,000 tonnes of ore to produce about 4,000,000 lbs. U308 (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""D"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the operation Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated levels of gold. These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the ""D"" orebody."

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. Plea se bear in mind that the over-all objectives were to increase physical availability and reliability."

"This paper describes a study carried out to determine the behaviour of Cu-Ni mill tailings during natural and flocculated sedimentations. Settling rates were examined under various conditions through standard laboratory batch settling tests. Flocculation was found to improve the sedimentation process significantly, but its effectiveness depended on several factors such as the pulp density of feed, the type and dosage of flocculating reagent, the pH of pulp, the intensity of mixing flocculant with tailings sand the use of stirring during compaction.It is shown that. for a sedimentation process taking place under given conditions, underflow pulp density (P) and sedimentation time (t) are related by the expression P = k.tn, where k and n are constants. A procedure is described for the use of this expression in thickener size estimations. IntroductionOften a considerable proportion of the mill feed is disposed as tailing, because the valuable mineral recovered usually forms a small fraction of the ore. Moreover, wet concentration processes result in liquid wastes that are several times more voluminous than the ore itself. Thus the handling and disposal of these wastes become an important cost item in most milling operations. The principal unit process employed in tailing disposal is solid-liquid separation which is traditionally carried out by gravity sedimentation in thickeners or tailing dams. Direct disposal of tailings into tailing dams is common practice where sufficiently large areas of land are available but it frequently becomes more economical or practical to densify the tailings in a thickener beforehand.Successful thickener operation depends essentially on correct thickener size which is in turn governed by the sedimentation characteristics of the tailings handled. Flocculation can aid the sedimentation process and bring about significant savings in thickener size, but its effective use requires a detailed study to identify the optimum conditions of application."

"Approximately 2.0 million tonnes of phosphate rock is imported from the U.S. to Alberta annually and is used in the production of agricultural fertilizers. No phosphate rock is presently mined in Canada, although sources of igneous phosphate have been mined in the past. Sedimentary phosphate rock is found in nine geological units within the Cordilleran Foothills and Front Ranges region of Alberta. The Devonian-Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Permo-Pennsylvanian Rocky Mountain Supergroup, and the Jurassic Fernie Formation have the best potential f or future development. Most of the phosphate rock in Alberta is of low grade and lies within restricted land use areas. The best over-all resource potential lies in the Fernie basin area of southeastern British Columbia, in the Fernie Formation. The possibility of deep phosphate rock deposits in the plains region should be examined.Phosphate rock is mined in Idaho, Utah, Montana and Florida, and is shipped to Canadian fertilizer plants for processing. Raw phosphate rock is acidified, usually with sulphuric acid, by a wet process. Varying amounts of ammonia are added, and the fertilizer is pelletized. Future research, in western Canada, is needed in the beneficiating of low-grade ores and in the area of in situ mining. At the present time, phosphate rock sells for around US$50Itonne, and Alberta fertilizer companies probably pay in the range of C$7D-$85Itonne for U.S. phosphate rock delivered to the plant. Environmental concerns about phosphate rock processing are centred around gypsum tailing ponds, and radioactive wastes.U.S. supplies of phosphate rock are secure until the year 2000; however, by this time, the richer deposits in the U.S. may be exhausted. Alternate deposits, such as the ones in Alberta and British Columbia, might then be considered. Phosphate byproducts, such as uranium, vanadium, fluorine and rare earth elements, may help in making the processing of low-grade Canadian phosphates economically feasible."

"This paper discusses the importance of considering residence time distribution (RTD) in the design of flotation and mixing circuits and in the analysis of operating problems. The experiences and successes of Brunswick Mining in this area are covered and include: the development of a practical RTD measurement technique using pulp conductivity, baffle installation to improve the RTD of existing process equipment, and the method in which RTD considerations have been used to design the newest flotation and conditioning operations IntroductionThe use of residence time distributions (RTDs) in the design and analysis of unit operations is well understood by the chemical engineering profession in while mineral processing engineers have tended to rely on empirical and rule-of-thumb factors. For example, in scale up from laboratory and pilot test results to full size flotation plant design, empirical rule s are often used to establish residence time and number of cells in the bank. Coleman suggests a factor of at least 2, and up to 5 for gold ores, be applied to laboratory determined flotation times. This is further illustrated in Table I, taken from Denver equipment. The number of cells in series to achieve the required retention time while minimizing short-circuiting has generated a variety of conclusions (Table 2). Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. An understanding of RTD concepts and techniques should help the practicing mineral engineer to develop more soundly based factors. "This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years' time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."

"The circulation wear rates of pure nickel, cupronickel and nickel-plated-steel coins were measured and found to be in the ratio 1:3:1 . The relative wear rates of nickel and cupronickel coins were similar to those reported in earlier studies, and the circulation wear data for nickel were used as a reference in laboratory wear tests. A correlation between circulation wear rates and laboratory wear rates formed the basis for a prediction of service life using relief legibility as an 'end of life' criterion. This criterion was determined to be an average surface thickness loss of 12 um. The surf aces of nickel and Nickel-Banded-Steel (N-B-STM) coins were observed to harden both in circulation and in the laboratory tests at a rate of approximately I VHN/year of actual or simulated service life. It was also observed that the laboratory wear rate of N-B -S coins increased as nickel cladding thickness increased and this effect was attributed to differences in surface hardness.Wear test results are also reported for the new Canadian dollar coin material which shows a better wear resistance than pure nickel. IntroductionThe subject of coinage wear has a long history, and a number of studies have been published, concerned both with the measurement of circulation wear rates and with accelerated laboratory tests to simulate the behaviour of coinage materials in service. As early as 1803, wear tests were conducted by Hatchett on gold coinage using various types of vibratory and tumbling machines». These tests were commissioned by King George III of England who was concerned about the wear of gold coins in circulation.Early in this century, Adrian performed laboratory tests that showed that the wear rates of cupronickel 75/25 and nickel coins were in the ratio 3:1 and this ratio was later confirmed in laboratory tests reported by Daeppen and Zurrerw, The latter authors also weighed cupronickel and nickel coins that had been in circulation for various times and observed the same 3: I ratio. There was further support from Tylczak and Blickensderfer who reported significantly higher abrasive wear rates for cupronickel compared to nickel, when rubbed against sand paper."

"Highly variable and higher than forecast lead miff feed grades were problems experienced at the Polaris Concentrator. Limited flotation capacity and poor operating flexibility prevented the plant operators from overcoming these difficulties, and resulted in grades and recoveries which were lower than necessary.Two column cells were integrated into the lead circuit in an effort to give the operators the tools they required to achieve the best grades and recoveries possible, regardless of the miff feed grade. Installation of the column cells increased lead concentrate grade from 76% to 79.3% Pb, and increased lead recovery from 9/% to 91.3% Pb.This paper reviews the design, development and operation of column flotation cells in the lead circuit at the Polaris Mine.IntroductionThe Polaris Concentrator was constructed in 1980 on a barge in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, and towed to its pre sent location on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, about 1450 km from the North Pole. The plant presently treat s about 2800 mtpd of new feed with average feed grades of 3010 Pb, 13% Zn and 5% Fe. Current production averages 36 000 tonnes of lead concentrate and 220 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually.The barge design and min e location dictated that the concentrator .be compact with very little unused floor space. As a result, flexibility was limited in terms of expanding the plant.Mill feed grades were highly variable and above forecast and the lead flotation circuit was found to be under capacity. This caused continued overloads in the lead cleaning circuit, resulting in low concentrate grades and recoveries. It was evident that an increase in lead flotation capacity and flexibility was necessary. "In an effort to increase productivity, the use of fly ash as a binder for consolidated backfill was studied. From laboratory and underground tests f or its cementitious properties and environmental effects, it was found that a portion of Portland cement could be replaced by the same amount of type ""C"" fly ash to produce an acceptable consolidated rockfill product for use at Kidd Creek.The environmental concerns in terms of dust control and emanation of radon gas were unfounded from measurements. The dust count was comparable to the use of Portland cement only, or with ground blast furnace slag, and the radiation readings were low, averaging one-seventh the regulation level.Since May 1984, a total of over 100 000tonnes of fly ash has been consumed as a binder blended with Portland cement, producing over four million tonnes of consolidated rockfill. To date, the fill in the stopes has performed very satisfactorily, while yielding considerable cost savings.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of base metal sulphide ore annually. The mining method for both No. I and No .2 mines is mainly sub-level blasthole stoping with delayed backfilling.No. 1 mine was developed with a shaft to a depth of 930 m in 1973 to recover the ore between the floor of the open pit at the 216 m horizon, and the 792 m horizon. Stopes are normally 18 m wide, 22 m to 65 m long, with heights varying from 90 m to 135 m. Vertical rib pillars between stopes are typically 24 m wide and sill pillars are 30 m thick.Pillar recovery is implemented after the consolidated rockfill placed in the mined stopes has cured for a period of at least three months. This allows a maximum recovery of the ore with a minimum of dilution, while also maintaining safe working conditions.No. 2 mine was developed from a second shaft, sunk to a depth of 1530 m in 1978, for the recovery of ore beneath the No. I mine. Sub-level stoping in No .2 mine is similar to No.1 mine in methodology, yet differs in sequencing, as no rib pillars are left."

"Loss of coal fines in reject slurries limits the yield of coal cleaning operations. Difficulties in handling fines also limit the extent of physical cleaning in treating coals with finely-disseminated impurities. Selective oil agglomeration allows even extreme fines to be processed and offers some novel approaches for coal cleaning and utilization.The oil agglomeration process for the recovery and beneficiation of fine and ultrafine coal has now been commercialized by the Chemical Engineering Section/Chemistry Division of the National Research Council (NRC). This paper describes these activities to apply oil agglomeration and related fine coal technologies on an industrial scale. Pilot plant and large scale results are described, as well as aspects of agglomerate utilization in both wet and dry form."

"A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration . Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet ,Processing the are as received resulted I n 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J."
