"Since its startup in 1975, the Rabbit Lake mill has been modified (0 process both increased tonnage and higher grade ore. Ore initially came from the Rabbit Lake pit . In 1985, a major mill expansion was commissioned to allow treatment of B-zone pit ore, which is mineralogically and metallurgically different fromRabbit Lake pit ore.Mill modifications, and the changing ore characteristics and processing targets which made them necessary, are described. Mill LocationThe mill complex, shown in Figure I, comprised of milling facilities, acid plant, power generation , warehouse and administration offices, is located approximately 1.5 Ian south of the Rabbit Lake pit, and about 8 Ian southwest of the B-zone open pit mine.Original Milling CircuitOre feed to the mill commenced June 10, 1975. The mill was designed to process 1500 tonnes per day , 483 000 tonnes per year with an average grade of O.44OJo Ups and an annual production of 2000 tonnes UPs' Run-of-mine ore was dumped directly onto a 60 em square opening grizzly. Oversize was broken with an Ingersoll-Rand hydrauli c rock breaker. Minus 60 cm ore was fed to a 6 m diameter by 1.8 m long Hardinge semi-autogenous (SAG) grate discharge mill. Mill discharge was screened over a Tyler double-deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize returned to the SAG mill feed chute via conveyor belt. Screen undersize (minus 2.4 mm) was pumped to 51 cm diameter Krebs cyclones in closed circuit with the SAG mill. Cyclone overflow (about 50% minus 74 micron) was thickened to 55% solids in a 30 m diameter neutral thickener .Thickened pulp was stored in two mechanically-agitated wood stave tanks (5.5 m diameter by 6 m high), to which sulphuric acid was added to obtain a pH range of 1.5 to 2.0. The fmalleaching was carried out in five more identical tanks. Sulphuric acid and sodium chlorate were used to maintain a pH of 1.5 and a terminal emf of -450 to -500 mV. Steam sparge was utilized to obtain a temperature of 45°C."

"Unanticipated low recovery or extraction of gold from heap leachable are can often be attributed 10 phenomena such as non-uniform percolation (channelling) of solution through heaps, excessively slow percolation rates due to densification of ore during stacking on the pads and parasitic or competing reactions of the cyanide solution with undesirable elements or geochemical ""impurities"" in the ore. The nature and causes of these phenomena are discussed in this paper, and it is suggested that geotechnical and geochemical expertise can contribute significantly to a better understanding of the relationship between laboratory results and actual field performance of the leaching process. Recommendations are made for bench-scale metallurgical testing to be complemented by geochemical and geotechnical laboratory evaluations, to ensure more successful heap leach projects. IntroductionHeap leaching is a simple, low-cost method of recovering metals from low grade ores which has now come into widespread application particularly for gold and silver metals in the United States.The heap leach process involves percolating a lixiviant (leaching agent) solution through broken or crushed ore (Chamberlain and Pojar, 1984). In the case of gold a dilute sodium cyanide solution is used and crushed ore is ""heaped"" on specially prepared impervious pads.The potential for use of heaping leaching methods for northwestern Ontario gold deposits was discussed by Beard (1983), who suggested that the use of this extraction technique in Canada should grow significantly for low grade ores as well as for small high grade deposits which cannot justify the installation of a new mill or the use of remote custom milling facilities. Two other potential situations for lise of a heap leaching extraction method are : as a low capital cost cash generator in the opening phase of a larger new project, and as a low cost output augmenter to complement a milling operation."

"In order to obtain reproducible and reproducible results in batch flotation, researchers have tried various approaches, from normalized testing, to modifying existing cells, and even designing new machines. The paper reviews the basic concepts that must be fulfilled in a laboratory flotation machine, and present the FLOTOMATEC design, which results from five years of testing and development. In addition to providing accurate measurements of air flowrate, power consumption, agitation speed, the cell eliminates most operator induced errors. Results of experiments comparing FLOTOMATEC to a conventional cell, as well as reproducibility tests are given. Introduction The use of batch flotation machines in mineral processing research and development is very common. These machines have been used for many years without almost any change in their design, instrumentation or automation. Various authors since Raffinot (1960) have criticized the available designs, especially with respect to the large errors that are introduced by the manual mode of operation. Barbery et al. "The requirements for a metallurgical acid plant treating smelter gases are both unique and demanding in terms of sulphur dioxide treatment and emission control. Since start up in 1981, the copper smelter at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited has undergone several major expansions. The expansion and modification of the acid plant has been an integral part of this process. Both production demands and government regulations dictate that this metallurgical acid plant be unique in terms of operating flexibility. The variable capacity to treat a wide range of sulphur dioxide concentrations, and the operating flexibility to control emissions are the topics of this paper.INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limitied is a base metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April, 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonne per day concentrator coming on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonne per year zinc plant was commissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 tonnes of ore per day . To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Cominco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 125 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No.3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery.The smelter, which uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process for the continuous production of blister copper from concentrate, went on line in June 1981. It has been expanded from its original capacity of 60 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per year of copper.From the very early design stages for the metallurgical complex, the company had adopted a policy of constructing and operating modern plants which would meet existing and anticipated environmental standards. With this in mind, the decision was made to utilize the proven technology of fixing sulphur dioxide emissions, in the form of sulphuric acid. A 636 tonne per day single absorption contact acid plant was built to serve the zinc plant in 1972. In 1981, an 883 tonne per day double absorption contact plant was built to serve the needs of the copper smelter. The copper smelter acid plant has since been expanded to a design capacity of 1692 tonnes per day and it is the main focus of this paper."

In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world 's largest uranium companies.Cameco's $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). "This paper describes the development of a process flowsheet designed to provide high dewatering rates and to bring about savings in tailing disposal costs. The flowsheet comprises a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener arranged in closed circuit. The mill tailing, after pulp density adjustment, is fed to the hydrocyclone which yields two products. The underflow product is sent to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflow product, together with the settling cone overflow, goes to the thickener which, with the aid of flocculants, gives a clear effluent and a relatively dilute underflow. The latter combines with the original mill tailing to form the hydrocyclone feed. Solids finally leave the system in the settling cone underflow which can reach pulp densities of up to 78%, making it suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.Some discussion is included for the selection and sizing of equipment required for this process. INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings which forms an added burden in milling practice, often with little or no return. It is, therefore, desirable to conduct this process as economically as possible. One way of reducing costs would be to increase the rate of dewatering so that savings can be made in the size of dewatering unit s which would lead to lower capital and operating expenditures.A common method of dewatering mill tailings is gravity sedimentation which is frequently carried out with the aid of flocculation. In most cases, flocculation greatly enhances the sedimentation process, but only until a pulp density of 50% to 55% is reached in the settled material.Centrifugal sedimentation in hydrocyclones can provide high pulp densities rapidly, but does not result in a clear effluent.This paper outlines a suitable combination of gravity and centrifugal sedimentations that results in an over-all high rate of dewatering. The system developed produces a material of high pulp density while at the same time giving clear effluent."

"This generic study has been developed in response to the frequently asked question, ""That is the best treatment route for refractory gold ore?"". The study has developed operating and capital costs for many potential treatment routes and they are presented here in a generic form. All costs are in relation to the value of 1.00 given to the base case, a 1000 mtpd bio-oxidation plant, operating at 25% solids and 72 hours residence time.There is unfortunately no simple answer to the above quest ions. The treatment of refractory ores is a complex subject, with many variables, such as mineralogy, chemistry, environment and tonnage. However this study does offer information and relative numbers that we believe will be of assistance to gold metallurgists in obtaining a ""first shot"" at estimating costs.Equally, this technology is a rapidly evolving one. As more plants are commissioned, and test programs completed, better data is constantly being generated. For a generic study of this type to remain useful it will need regular updating and adjustment."

"INTRODUCTIONTeck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine is located 35 Km east of Marathon, Ontario. In conjunction with its 1000 tonne per day gold concentrator, the company operates an effluent treatment plant for the treatment of mill, mine and site effluents prior to environmental discharge. This paper provides a brief overview of treatment strategies and methods, employed to detoxify final effluent.WATER MANAGEMENTThe tailings impoundment basin, located 3 Km south of the plant site, provides storage capacity for all process effluents and site run-off. Basin supernatant (reclaim water) is recirculated to the plant for reuse as process water, in order to minimize fresh water consumption. As site run-off and limited fresh water intake exceed natural losses due to evaporation, reclaim water in excess of process requirements is passed through the effluent treatment (ET) facility to control tailings basin level by providing regulated discharge of environmentally acceptable effluent. (Figure 1)PASSIVE TREATMENTTo reduce treatment costs and burden on the ET facility, reclaim water is fed to the plant to take maximum advantage of natural destruction processes occurring in the tailings basin.These include: volatilizationphotodecompositionbiological oxidation and precipitationstorm water dilutionConcentrator recovery techniques (Figure 2) are directed toward maximizing gold recovery while limiting the addition and extraction of contaminants requiring disposal and eventual treatment.Currently ore ground to 90% -200 mesh is pre-aerated at pH 9.0 with lime for 18 hours prior to 30 hours cyanidation at pH 9.5 with low cyanide ion excess (70 ppm).Pre-aeration passivates cyanicides prior to cyanide contact. This reduces cyanide consumption and the formation of cyanide complexes. In conjunction with recovery requirements low pH is maintained to retard the dissolution of stibnite into its antimony and sulfide components."

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Minerology of the ore--accessibility of gold to lixiviant.3. Minimum particle size and size distribution of crushed product to allow percolation of lixiviant through the heap.4. Minimum amount of clays or clay-like slimes that can cause coating of ore particles and channelling of lixiviant.5. Minimum strength of ore particles or agglomerations to allow economic height of heaps to be built.6. Amount and suitability of real estate.7. Amount and type of precipitation.8. Ambient temperatures.9. Possible poorer lixiviant diffusion.10. Possible lower oxygen content in dissolved cyanide solution with higher heaps, particularly with ice and snow cover."

"Mining OperationsOre will be mined by open pit techniques. Because of the high grade of the deposit and the low strip ratio, mining rates are small relative to most other open pit operations.The ore deposit is located in the valley of the main fork of Red Dog Creek. The bulk of the deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the creek, but mineralization does traverse the creek in both the north and east directions.Erosion has exposed the orebody in a number of locations, and has resulted in oxidation of the mineralization closer to the surface. Although much of this oxide material is very high grade, it leaches readily and, at least in the initial phases of the operation, will be stockpiled and not treated in the concentrator.During construction, 2.3 million mt. (2.5 million st.) of overburden and waste will be stripped from the orebody to expose ore for initial operations. Competent non-mineralized waste will be used to build roads and waste dumps, but the bulk of material removed consists of oxide or ice-rich soils and weathered rock which is not suitable for construction.The annual ore mining rate will be 1.9 million mt. (21. million st.). The strip ratio will start off at 1.2 to 1, falling to 1.0 to 1 by year 5 and ultimately to 0.8 to 1.Bench heights are set at 7.6 m (25 ft). Pit slopes will vary depending on the material present in the wall. The slope, through competent waste and the sulphide package, was set at 45 degrees. This is flattened to 26 degrees (i.e. 2: 1) through overburden and Upper Kivalina shales. The Kivalina Shales are an ice-rich shale whose carbonate matrix has been leached out and which exhibits little or no strength as it thaws. In addition, a 100 ft containment berm will be left in the wall below overburden and Kivalina."

"Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. INTRODUCTION(l-4)Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville, operates a copper-nickel, platinum palladium mine and concentrator at Nye, Montana, located in the valley of the Stillwater River, approximately, 100 km southwest of Billings. It is North America's only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

"Microseismic systems at five mines in the Sudbury Basin provide the basic data for Falconbridge Limited's rockburst research. Daily and long-term analysis of this data as well as underground observations has confirmed the fault-slip mechanism of rock bursting at three mines. A detailed analysis of the complete history of Falconbridge Mine is being conducted and Distinct Element numerical models are being used to simulate both the stick-slip behaviour of faults and the dynamic effects of the induced vibrations on rock and backfill. University research includes acoustic tomographic imaging of the rock mass based on seismic wave propagation and collection of full micro seismic waveforms to allow application of advanced seismic and statistical analysis techniques. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Limited currently has five mines operating in the Sudbury Basin: East, Lockerby, Onaping, Fraser, and Strathcona Mines, which along with the Falconbridge open pit produced 2.8 million tonnes of ore in 1986. The underground mines range from about 600 m to 2000 m below surface and one of the consequences of mining at these depths is the occurrence of rockbursts.Research into rockburst phenomena at Falconbridge began over 25 years ago and research is continuing in an effort to avoid the problem by improved mine design, to protect mine openings from damage by design of effective support systems and to better understand the processes which precede a major fault slip rockburst. Since the early 1980s, significant progress has been made due principally to micro seismic monitoring and advances in microcomputer technology coupled with detailed underground investigations.It is now possible to identify the fault-slip mechanism as the cause of many of the rockbursts which occur at Falconbridge mines. By gaining an understanding of effect of mining-induced stresses on the pre-existing geological structures, areas which may experience rock bursting can be identified and can be protected against severe damage by appropriate support techniques."

"Artificial stope support has become an essential component of many underground mining operations. Because the use of cable bolts in open stopes is a relatively new concept, most support is still designed by trial and error or by rules of thumb. This often results in costly overdesigned support or inadequate support which leads to stope failure.This paper proposes guidelines to determine support requirements using the stability graph method. The stability graph method is an empirical open stope design technique that takes into account the key factors that influence stope stability. The factors for the design of a cable bolt support system include bolt length, bolt intensity and the original rock mass competency and can be estimated using empirically calibrated charts. The empirical charts were developed based on more than 60 case histories of cable bolting success and failure in Canadian open Slope mines.The concept of pre reinforcement and supp ort stiffness will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONArtificial support, in the form of rock anchors, has become an important component of all underground mining operations because its stabilizing effect contributes to make underground workings safer. There are several types of rock anchors featuring different properties and having a variety of functions. This paper focusses on grouted cable bolt applications in large open stope mining. Such a support system may improve the competency of the disturbed rock mass to a point approaching the undisturbed rock quality by limiting joint movement and dilation. This results in more stable, possibly larger and, thus, more efficient production stopes."

"The objective of this expert system application in a copper-zinc concentrator, is to increase the availability of assay data through substitution for erroneous data. The assay data is used by the Operations personnel and automatic process control strategies to control flotation circuit performance. Two online X-ray fluorescence analysis systems analyze 24 streams across four divisions to provide the required data. Data availability of individual streams average 90% while the resulting circuit availabilities are 70%. The unavailability of correct data results from mechanical, X-ray or process problems. The erroneous data can be identified by process experts using knowledge relating stream interdependencies and historical process behaviour. An expert system was devised to provide real time identification of erroneous data and substitute for that data with the ultimate aim of improving metallurgical response by both the operator and automatic control systems.The paper discusses the early development work and architecture of the knowledge base designed using Neuron Data's expert shell NEXPERT.INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the early development of an expert system (ES) prototype at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The project is a joint undertaking of the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited and CANMET. Kidd Creek entered into the project to apply heuristic rules to the XRF assay data to improve the metallurgical control of the flotation process by increasing availability of analysis data. This project provided a problem of suitable size and future expandability while making use of a wide base of in-house expertise and experience. Another important benefit is the introduction of expert system technology to the site providing tools and experience for future system selection and technology application. CANMET has an on-going interest in assessing various aspects of ES technology (hardware, software, knowledge engineering, integration) while addressing problems in process operations that could most readily benefit from the technique. CANMET's role in the project was to provide project assistance, financial support, substitution algorithm assistance and software for data substitution. The knowledge bases (rules) have now been completed and are to be tested in the online environment."

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."

"ClassificationClassification is a combination of mechanical and hydraulic operation which separates a pulp into two portions according to their respective settling rate. The finished product, the overflow, is removed from the other product, sand, which requires further grinding.Pulp is the uniform suspension of solids in a liquid. Overflow is the fines and therefore the more slowly settling portion of the pulp which is carried over the top of the classifier by the flow of water; sand is the coarser and more rapidly settling portion of the original pulp which is discharged from the classifier by the mechanical action of the rakes or conveyed out by a ""screw"" .Selective classification is classification that has for its object the concentration of the heavy constituents of the original pulp in the sand product so that it may be ground finer than the lighter constituent.Classification is used as follows:I. To make a size separation, for example, a sand-fines separation so that each product may be given a different treatment.2. For closed circuit grinding so that the maximum size of particles entering the circuit is limited, and so that the useful work is increased by enabling the mill to operate mainly on the particles that require the reduction.3. For differential grinding of the heavy mineral constituent and the gangue. In this case, the heavy mineral is concentrated in the sand product and is reduced further, while the lighter gangue material overflows the classifier.The selection of the proper size and type of classifier is determined by the function required, the character of the ore, and the tonnage to be handled, the initial cost and the operating cost."

"INTRODUCTION The Holt-McDermott Mine is wholly-owned gold mining operation of American Barrick Resources Corp. that begun operations in June 1988.The property is located 0.5 km. south of Highway 101 East in the Harker-Holloway Townships of Northeastern Ontario, 7 miles south of Lake Abitibi and 15 miles west of the Quebec-Ontario border.Employees of the operation travel daily from various communities in the area, predominantly from Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is located 65 km. to the southwest.The significance of the operation is that it is the first full scale operation associated to the Oestor-Porcupine Fault to go into full production in recent history as well as the first Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operation in the province owing to the natural occurring carbonaceous ores that are associated to the ore body and the geological fault systems.GEOLOGYThe Holt-McDermott deposit is located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, a short distance west of the Ontario-Quebec border. Ore grade material follows the footwall contact of a fault zone known locally as the McKenna Fault, which is thought to be a splay off of the Oestor-Porcupine Fault, itself a major feature in the Abitibi belt.The McKenna Fault strikes approximately east-west (as does the Oestor-Porcupine) and dips to the south at sixty-five to seventy degrees. The fault lies within a package of mafic volcanic rocks (basalts). These rocks have been strongly altered and mineralized adjacent to the McKenna Fault, and the resulting lens-like ore bodies constitute the mining targets."

"INTRODUCTIONGold is found in many natural states, native nuggets, loose grain in river sands, veins in rock, as well as associated with sulphides, oxides, etc., disseminated more or less minutely.Its high value in recent years has spawned new technologies to win values from sources once considered too lean for commercial recovery. Cyanide leaching from fine milled ore or tailings, from upstream recovery operations, coupled with adsorption onto relatively coarse granules of activated carbon, concentrate the gold enough to be converted to bullion by time-honoured methods.The carbon granules are fragile. Size degradation in handling must be minimized not only to prevent loss of gold on fine fragments of carbon that could pass with the barren tailings, but to maintain adsorption efficiency. Besides, the granulated carbon itself is costly. Circular Vibroscreens are winning acceptance for dewatering carbon granules thanks to their gentle yet effective performance in gold recovery systems around the world. The system at Equity Silver is illustrative.BackgroundEquity Silver Mines Ltd., Houston, British Columbia, first began production in September 1980. In 1984, a feasibility study showed that additional gold and silver could be economically recovered through cyanide leaching of the flotation tailing.Although the carbon-in-pulp (ClP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) process is commonly used for extracting precious metals from slurries, the use of circular vibrating screens, and Vibroscreens in particular, for the carbon circuit is an innovation that cuts costs.Rectangular vibrating screens have been the conventional separation mechanism of choice across North America. In contrast, the use of Vibroscreens has been proven to be less costly for the initial purchase and installation. Also, these circular vibrating screens require less power and less space.
