Subsidence can cause serious damage to surface installations such as railroads, highways, pipelines, buildings and other facilities over a period of many years. Although total elimination of the effects of subsidence is difficult, the damage can be minimized through a systematic analysis. An example of such a study for reducing the effects of subsidence on pipelines is presented in this paper. Subsidence-induced stresses on a pipeline over some coal mining properties in Utah have been analyzed using a computer with graphics capabilities. The results are useful in predicting the extent of damages due to mining subsidence. In view of the gradual replacement of room-and-pillar mining by longwall with caving, this sort of analysis will become more and more important. In the next phase of this study the predicted results will be compared with the permissible stress levels on pipelines over actual subsided areas in an actual case.

"Many plants use computers for process control and most have computerized Management Information Systems but few have been able to have these systems interact with one another. Developing this system interaction is not a one-step process but requires careful planning and implementation. This paper describes two projects that were implemented to provide the bridge between the process control and management information systems of Cominco Limited. Both projects include the replacement of essentially process control systems installed in the late 1960s. These original systems provided an enhanced level of control in the form of Direct Digital Control (via computer/manual analogue control stations) and a management reporting capability of process data. The experience gained from the use of these systems over a period of fifteen years formed a basis for the evaluation and planning for the new systems. The new systems were commissioned in 1985 and 1986 and operating and further developments leading to a totally integrated process information and control system are underway. INTRODUCTIONThe concept of hierarchical control involves a control structure consisting of a number of defined levels. Each level performs a defined function with information consolidated and combined as it moves up through the hierarchical structure. The commonly accepted structure of a hierarchical control system echoes the structure of the plant which is being controlled. Referring to Figure 1:Level 0 - Sensors and ActuatorsSensors and actuators, such as thermocouples and flow control valves, interface directly to the process and are generally connected directly to the controllers or multiplexers at Level I.Level 1 - Regulatory ControlThis level provides basic PID control (proportional/integral/ derivative) typically using microprocessor based controllers and programmable controllers for digital control of motors and machines. Systems at this levelare usually segregated by plant unit, e.g, crushing, flotation, drying. Control is concentrated on achieving optimum conditions for a particular feed rate."

"IntroductionIndustrial Relations combines two very important relationships - employee relations and union relations.Employee relations always come into play when people are hired to perform tasks. Because mineral processing plants cannot be operated successfully without people, at least not yet, if they ever will be, employee relations must exist in an operatingplant.If the employees choose to be represented by a union, then a relationship with the union as an institution also comes into play. It is very important to note that unionization does not mean that the employee relationship is replaced by a relationship with the union. The latter is superimposed on the former, but it does not replace it. Similarities and overlaps in the two relationships will be present, some of which are of fundamental importance. Nevertheless, they are two different relationships and the reader should bear this in mind when reviewing those parts of this chapter which discuss unionization, collective bargaining, collective agreements, and work stoppages.These two important relationships, which we have chosen to combine and call industrial relations, have crucial roles to play in the social system which interrelates people performing the necessary tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of a plant. The technological organization - equipment, process layout and so forth - and this social system are interdependent and complementary. This chapter attempts to show that the potential level of effectiveness of both the technological organization and the social system depends on the recognition and nurturing of this nexus between them.Occupational health and safety and training are subjects for another chapter. But, both of these have been critical and longstanding employee relations topics . They are destined to take on added importance in the future. As issues in collective bargaining, they are also attracting increasing attention in all union relations. It is hoped that the reader will not isolate from industrial relations those topics which are being dealt with in another chapter. They are very much a part of it and we cannot refrain from making some reference to them."

"INTRODUCTIONGold tailings retreatment plants have been operated for many years throughout the world. Several large tailings retreatment facilities have been operated profitably in South Africa since 1976 and there are tailings retreatment operations in Canada currently in production with more in the feasibility stages.The Timmins Gold Tailings Project of ERG Resources Inc. was designed to treat 8,000,000 tonnes per annum of gold tailings for an eight month operating season, and commissioning of the operation began in July 1988. The payback period for this project is about 3 years which corresponds to an IRR of 30%.This report summarizes the metallurgical characteristics of the reclaim tailings, describes the process flowsheet which was developed to enable ERG to economically recover gold from the Timmins area tailings, and reviews commissioning activities."

"The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples. Their results confirmed the stability of intermetallic phases that could be shown up on the outer surface as a result of galvannealing of galvanized steel.Bernick and Sievertv"" investigated the processing of galvan nealed steel. They found that the galvannealed coating with the best forming qualities consisted of a mixture of Zeta phase and Eta phase."

"IntroductionMost base metal mines sell their concentrate to a custom smelter. The two parties concerned therefore draw up a contract which would detail the conditions under which concentrate sales will take place. The contract will identify treatment and marketing charges (including escalations), deductions for metal losses in the smelter, pricing formula, timing of payments, penalties for deleterious elements, etc.An understanding of the smelter contract is important to the mineral processor, for it will determine how he operates the plant to maximize economic return.Description of Contract ClausesUsing copper concentrate as an example, the smelter contract generally contains the following three basic charges:I. Metal Deductions- as the smelting process does not recover all the metal contained;2. A Smelting Charge- expressed per ton of material to cover costs on the bulk material such as receiving, unloading, thawing in winter, sampling, roasting to drive off sulphur, smelting through the matte and blister stages to recover mostof the copper and precious metals;3. A Refining Charge- expressed per pound of copper.The following is a review in some detail of a number of clauses which could be considered typical of a treatment and marketing type of copper concentrate sales contract. Most normal considerations in an agreement could be covered by the following types of clauses.Terminology- covers definitions, units of measurement to be used (e.g. short tons, troy ounces, etc.), currency (Canadian dollars). The term ""unit"" may be defined - l OJo of a ton of concentrate, e.g. one unit of copper means 20 pounds of copper per short ton of concentrate."

"An investigation into the problem of atmospheric fog in Canadian mines is described. Fog occurs in several mines and the reduced visibility can result in the closure of workings for safety reasons. Information on the mechanisms of fog formation are discussed and the methods for improving conditions are reviewed with their relative costs.INTRODUCTIONAtmospheric fog occurs in several Canadian mines during spring and summer. The fog which reduces visibility, contributes to loss of production and increased accident risk . Closure of ramps in mechanized mines causes mining to be stopped or rescheduled, and stoping and grade control may be affected . Increased corrosion of equipment may result from acidic fog .Fog is commonly caused by saturated air being compressed and heated by an inlet fan and then being circulated in an ascensional system with heat transfer to the walls of wet airways. This causes supersaturation and water droplets condense to create fog, with liquid water contents of 0.5 g/kg to 3 g/kg of air. These concentrations reduce visibility to less than 10m and prevent mining. Less severe fog is usually tolerated as a nuisance, about which little can be done."

"The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."

"This paper outlines the upgrading of a double-drum 2000 hp cage hoist to provide fully-automatic operation from shaft station control panels. The application utilizes programmable controller technology to provide all necessary functions for movement of personnel and material to 22 locations in a 4000 ft shaft.Various functions involving special design considerations such as ""chairing"", ""jogging"", and three modes of ""multi-level calling service"", are outlined. The use of higher level PLC functions to optimize memory utilization and simulate ""elevator service"" required the addition of a comprehensive fault finding software section to aid in troubleshooting.This paper will deal primarily with the automation portion of the project with references made to other pertinent aspects which were prerequisite to automatic operation. It is not intended to deal with every design detail, but rather to provide an overview of what can be done in the area of automation for those considering such an application. INTRODUCTIONEarly hoisting control systems provided only the essential elements of control, leaving many responsibilities with the operator. With advancements in various areas of technology, electromechanical devices were incorporated to enforce slow-down in end zones, control acceleration rates, monitor safety devices, etc. Brake control systems were supplied to allow for ""single-stick"" operator control, regulated deceleration during emergency brake applications, etc.These additions enhanced the over-all performance but were generally confined to speed and current regulation. Some mechanical devices, such as travelling nut limits, etc.; were used to provide ""position"" control to multiple locations within the shaft. These devices, in conjunction with rather extensive relay control panels, did allow for the establislunent of some automatic cage hoists . The hoists were often limited to service from point ""A"" to point ""B""', involving a limited number of levels due to the complexities of the mechanical interfaces employed. Only limited systematic work sequences were possible . .Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) were introduced into industry in the mid-70s and have since gained acceptance in mining applications such as pumping, ventilation, ore handling, etc. This technology, being ""software"" based, allows complexities to reside in the program rather than increasing the number of physical control elements. This has opened the door into hoisting systems for automatic loading and hoisting of ore as well as a means to achieve a comprehensive package of automated cage hoisting functions."

"IntroductionIn autogenous mills, grinding of the ore feed is accomplished by the direct action of the variously sized rocks making up the feed on each other and the mill interior. Size reduction is achieved without the addition of grinding media foreign to the mill feed, differing in this respect from rod, ball, and pebble milling. The term ""semi-autogenous"" has entered common usage in the industry to describe autogenous mills to which supplementary grinding ball additions are made to increase the rate at which size reduction of the mill feed occurs, beyond that achieved solely by the action of rock on rock. In a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, 50Jo to 10% of the mill volume may be occupied by grinding balls, whereas a range of 25% to 45% is more usual in ball milling.The comminution of mineral ores using ""conventional"" techniques has been described in previous papers. In conventional operations, size reduction of mined ore, and liberation of the valuable mineral content, is typically accomplished using flowsheets employing two to four stages of crushing. Crushing is followed by one to three stages of grinding and classification using various combinations of rod, ball, and pebble mills. This paper describes operations employing autogenous or semiautogenous grinding as the principal stage in the comminution process. Primary crusher discharge, or in some instances run of mine ore, is fed directly to an autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding circuit. Final product sizing may be accomplished in a single grinding stage, the mills operating in closed circuit with classification equipment, or in several stages using autogenous and semi-autogenous mills for primary grinding, and ball or pebble mills for secondary grinding. In several operations a portion of the primary mill discharge is crushed in an intermediate comminution step, these circuits being called autogenousball- crusher circuits (ABC). Many different flowsheets exist, but common and important to most are crushed ore stockpiles, reclaim feeder and mill feed conveyor systems, pumps, screens, and classifiers. Autogenous grinding is employed in both wet and dry processes, although today wet predominate."

"IntroductionThe ion exchange process is classed as a purification and concentration stage. In the uranium industry it is used to separate, and recover uranium, from a solution produced in the leach and subsequent solid washing circuit, that contains uranium as well as some impurities. The final product from this circuit is a solution, containing uranium at a 15 to 25 fold increase in concentration, with a chemical composition suitable for the ""Precipitation"" circuit.The process is a reversible chemical ""ION"" exchange, between a solution, and solid phase, with the ""resin"" being the solid phase. Various chemical changes in the solution phase will permit the resin to remove uranium from a solution or have the uranium removed from the resin back into a solution phase. The former loads uranium onto the resin, and is called the ""adsorption cycle"", and the removal or stripping is known as the ""elution cycle"".Ion Exchange resin is a semi-rigid polystyrene spherical bead, approximately 10 to 30 mesh. It is used by placing the resin in a vessel, so that a porous bed of resin is formed, through which the solution may flow.There are many different types of vessels, and systems used to hold the resin, but it is not the intention of this chapter to describe them all, but to describe two methods used in Elliot Lake. These are the ""fixed bed"", and ""moving bed"" systems, the condition of the bed during normal operation signifies the name of the system.Chemical and Physical Characteristicslon Exchange ResinThe resin used is a strange base Anionic resin, semi-rigid, and spherical in shape. The size of the wet resin is approximately 9007o between 20 and 40 mesh. Physically the beads of resin are broken early, but some have lasted over 15 years and are still in use."

"Geo-statistics was born from mining problems: grades not being what was expected; more tons of waste than expected; in other words, dilution. Geo-statisticians now claim to have solved many of these problems, but the solutions seem to have a hard time being picked up by practitionners. One of the reasons may be the jargon which geo-statisticians are using. The reason for jargon is that obtaining solutions required a strict formulation in a statistical framework. Practicing mining engineers and geologists are not used to such a framework, and they are not familiar with the jargon. In this paper, the authors re-examine dilution in operating mines and answer two extremely practical problems, using practical language as much as possible. Can dilution be reduced by improving the quality of blast hole samples? How many samples are needed to obtain a good ore-waste discrimination, i.e. to reduce dilution to acceptable levels? Citing real situations, this paper will try to show how fairly simple concepts can be used to answer both problems. It will try to present the solut ions using a minimum of jargon, even if the theoretical solution could be obtained in a few precisely worded paragraphs.The two problems considered are the following: the first one was encountered in the Panguna deposit of Bougainville Copper Limited, P.N .G., but it occurs in every open pit operation where selective mining is required. As the cut-off is lowered, more and more mining occurs in marginal areas. Grade control is mostly based on the grades obtained from blast holes, hence, it is essential that the quality of the blast hole samples be as good as possible in order to reduce dilution, waste being sent to the mill and ore being sent to the waste dump.The second example stemmed from the grade control technique used in many gold open-pit operations in Western Australia: channels are cut on lines 5 m apart and assays are taken every metre. The pattern in the same regardless of rock type, whether one is in the oxidized zone or not. The number of samples to be treated is enormous, hence, the question arises how to find an acceptable sampling grid, and whether changing it can reduce dilution at an acceptable cost.A solution will be given to each problem separately, although in fact it could be seen that the formal framework is the same in both situations."

Mineralogical investigations in connection with gold metallurgy are usually performed to find the reason for poor recoveries by cyanidation or by other leaching techniques. Poor recoveries most commonly are obtained when (I) native gold is encapsulated in an insoluble mineral as "invisible gold"; (2) native gold is coated with a precipitate; (3) gold-bearing products are insoluble in cyanide solutions; (4) carbonaceous material in the ore adsorbs gold; and (5) associated minerals decompose and consume cyanide. Samples of refractory material quite often have low gold tenors. It is difficult to find the gold-bearing minerals in such samples with an optical microscope because the probability of finding trace minerals in samples is small. The probability decreases with decreasing grain size of the gold-bearing mineral and with decreas¬ing gold tenor of the sample. Techniques have been developed to increase the success rate of finding gold grains; some are (1) concentrating heavy minerals; (2) preparing special polished sections; (3) searching with an image analyzer; and (4) dissolving associate silicate and sulphide minerals.

"Once all the hullabaloo about Finance Minister Wilson's April 27 budget died down (or was it an April 26 budget?), the pain of the budget papers began to sink in. Individuals and corporations will have to dig deeper and pay more taxes - and government will continue to dig deeper and spend more. The irony of the situation is that higher tax rates actually make flow-through shares more attractive as a tax-deferral investment - a bittersweet ""bravo"" for the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONFor the first time in Canadian history, a major budget address has taken two days to deliver. Of course, it's not a case of long-windedness, but rather a case of a hastily called press announcement on April 26 in response to a budget leak, followed by a formal budget speech on April 27.The general reaction of the business community to the budget was to the effect that the tax hikes are acceptable, but the government's failure to curb spending is less than acceptable. Mr. Wilson's reported response indicated that the government had never promised to cut spending, and that increased government spending would actually benefit the country. That age-old debate will doubtlessly continue for generations.In any event, three noteworthy components of the budget papers are:• Personal income tax rates increase effective July I, 1989;• A ""large corporations tax"" (in effect 'a corporate ""minimum tax"") is effective July I, 1989; and• Federal sales tax increases are effective from June 30, 1989, to be replaced by a national sales tax in 1991.A brief overview of these and other budget proposals follows."

"IntroductionDevelopments in the preparation, hydraulic transportation and placement of classified mill tailing as an effective backfill and support for mining excavations, have made feasible several advancements in mining methods that are safer and more economical. Hydraulic backfill systems have played an integral part in the development of more efficient cut-and-fill and blasthole stoping.The hydraulic transportation of tailing fill has made possible the elimination of expensive and laborious transportation, placement and spreading of gravel type fills. Also, in cut-andfill stopes, the use of hydraulically placed consolidated fill has largely eliminated the need to use extensive timbering for floors and supports, previously necessary when only gravel type, waste rock or unconsolidated tailing fill was used .Another important advantage of using mill tailing as backfill is that it decreases the need to contain a large portion of the mill solids waste in a surface disposal area and thus reduces environmental and ecological problems.Tailing Fill PropertiesConsolidated tailing fill consists of deslimed mill tailing and Portland cement. These two materials are mixed together in various proportions to form a high density slurry which is transferred underground by gravity through boreholes and pipelines. After placement underground, the water is drained off and the mixture is allowed to set. The strength of the consolidated fill is dependent on the cement content, particle size distribution and curing time. A typical tailing/ cement ratio used for bulk filling in stopes requiring vertical wall support is 30:1. Ratios ranging from 8:1 to 5: 1 are used for stope floors. High pulp densities minimize segregation and loss of cement during placement as well as reduce the amount of drainage water to be handled."

"SUMMARY A practical application of nitric acid oxidation of sulphides, based on the principles of the Arseno process, has been developed for the Cinola ore. Development of the process has been based on testwork conducted by Bacon Donaldson of Vancouver and Hazen Research of Denver, and on conceptual engineering performed by Minproc Engineers of Denver.A comprehensive Stage II report for the project has been submitted to the B.C. permitting agencies, containing provisions for a zero discharge tailings impoundment system and prevention of acid mine drainage. Approval in principle is expected in early 1989.A feasibility study recently completed by Minproc Engineers and Davy McKee Corporation demonstrates that this project can be brought to production for a capital expenditure of C$120 million for a mill throughput of 6,000 tonnes/day and operated at a total direct operating cost of less than $20/tonne.INTRODUCTION The Cinola orebody was discovered in 1970. It is situated approximately in the centre of Graham Island, the largest of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It represents the mid to upper levels of a hydrothermal precious metals system, characterized by intense brecciation and silicification. Gold is associated with finely disseminated sulphides in a breccia matrix and in free form in numerous quartz veins.Ownership of the property has changed hands a number of times, and previous attempts to bring the property to production have failed. Two critical factors have frequently been blamed for difficulty in creating a successful project: namely, process and environment factors, hence the title of this paper.City Resources (Canada) Limited (""City"") acquired the property in 1986, and commenced an aggressive campaign to verify ore reserves, to carry out metallurgical research and to address environmental issues.PROJECT OVERVIEW When the Cinola orebody was discovered, the significance of hydrothermal mineraliza¬tion associated with crustal plate boundaries was not recognized, and for several years, the orebody was considered an uneconomic curiosity. If the type and location of orebody sought by many companies engaged in gold exploration were to be specified, it would probably be a description of the Cinola orebody - it is a large (greater than 1.5 million ounce), low grade (2.45 gm/tonne), refractory ore reserve associated with the Pacific rim crustal plate boundary. The industry appears to have recognized in the past few years that its future lies in the exploitation of such orebodies, and is prepared to come to grips with the technical problems associated with such ores. In this sense, the Cinola orebody might be considered to have come of age."

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). These mineral products also have good market expansion potential provided additional geological and market research is conducted. The use of company names in reference to sundry products and locations should not be interpreted as specific endorsement by the Government of Manitoba. "Introduction""Pebble milling"" is a term used to describe secondary grinding done with rock pebbles rather than steel balls or other steel or metal shapes. This paper discusses pebble milling with particular attention being paid to uranium grinding circuits.Pebble milling is typically employed:a. where the cost of steel balls becomes exorbitant, as may be the case in an isolated area.b. where the extra steel added from steel ball consumption may be detrimental to further processing.c. where the over-all economics favour the use of pebbles rather than ball.Pebble milling differs from autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding in that a sized product has been removed from some part of the primary comminution circuit, and it is this sized product which is added as grinding media to the pebble milling stage. The pebbles do not necessarily have to be produced from the ore- ""foreign"" pebbles can be used. Also, pebble milling generally refers to grinding from a fine size, below about 6 mesh (3360 micron), with relatively small media, that is, secondary grinding. In South Africa, however, primary pebble mills are sometimes used to grind crusher house product, and thus function in place of rod mills. Pebbles for this service are large and heavy as they must weigh as much as balls used in similar service.The first large applications of pebble milling were in South Africa(n. ""Tube milling"" with pebbles started in 1904. The tube mill was simply a tumbling mill with a length to diameter ratio over two. A ""typical"" early tube mill was 5.5 ft. (1.7 m) in diameter and 16 ft. (4.9 m) in length. Diameters increased steadily. King(n mentions 8-ft. (2.4 m) units in his 1949 book. By 1961, the largest units discussed by Jackson('' were 12ft. (3. 7 m) in diameter."

"Batch and continuous regrind tests were conducted in 3 kW and 15 kW tower mill units, respectively. Single particle size classes of a chilean copper sulphide concentrate were employed in the batch tests, while a fraction of the plant stream was deviated to the continuous unit operated under different conditions.Results are interpreted in terms of the simplified grinding kinetic model energy-based and conveniently adapted to this application. Based on the above figures plus some industrial data supplied by MPSI Inc., a scale-up relationship was developed for the apparent specific rate of breakage siE, as a function of the net power draw P, i.e.siE = siE text (P/P test) 0.089This equation fit very well the available data at the three scales and its application to regrind 4400 t/day of rougher copper concentrate from 70% below 325 Tyler mesh to 95% below same mesh, involves around 30% energy-saving compared to standard ball mill for same grinding task.INTRODUCTIONImpact and abrasion-attrition breakage are two extreme mechanisms present in any grinding system in a proportion defined by specific design and operating conditions. Impact breakage is generally efficient for coarse grinding, while abrasion-attrition is adequate to produce fine particles. Efficiency of conventional tumbling mills decreases as fineness of the product increases, even though distribution of applied stresses is always much stronger than internal force distribution in the particles. On the other hand.in a vertically stirred ball mill like the tower mill, distribution of applied stresses and particle strengths are in the same order of magnitude, making possible nearly ideal abrasion conditions (1).Tower mill configuration includes a cylindrical body vertically mounted and provided with a central screw with flights to produce circulation of balls moved up through the inner region to return down by the external space. Fresh material can be fed into the top , center or bottom in order to assure appropriate agitation of suspended particles. Size reduction and evacuation rates should compensate settling of coarse particles to avoid sanding of the screw. "The mining of the ore bodies at Rabbit Lake has in the past been by the open pit method. This method is presently being used to develop the B-zone and will continue into the future with the development of two smaller ore bodies, the A-zone and D-zone. The Eagle Point orebody will be developed by an underground method which will provide production and employment into the next century.The ore bodies at B-zone, A-zone and D-zone are unique in that they are located under Wollaston Lake. To permit mining by the open pit method a steel-celled dyke has been constructed around the north end of the B-zone. This same dyking method will be used for the A -zone and D-zone. INTRODUCTIONMine development at Rabbit Lake commenced in 1970when a detailed engineering feasibility study established the viability of the Rabbit Lake deposit. In 1972 construction of the mill and camp site began. Construction materials were seasonally hauled to the site over a winter road until November 1973when the government of Saskatchewan completed an all-weather road to within six miles of the operation.In October 1974, stripping of the Rabbit Lake open pit began with the removal of overburden and lake bottom sediments from the previously drained Rabbit Lake. The first ore was processed by the mill in June 1975and by October the mill was producing three million pounds per year. The design capacity of five million pounds annually was first achieved in 1977 and maintained until 1981, when lower ore grades resulted in lower production rates .It was clear when mining at Rabbit Lake began that, without additional reserves, the Rabbit Lake operation had a life of less than 10 years. Exploration, therefore, continued in the immediate area in an attempt to discover additional uranium mineralization."
