"The environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project is presented. Baseline data for fish, water, air and radon collected in 1973, 1975, 1980and 1986, are compared with post-development environmental monitoring data. Predicted environmental impacts for the developed Rabbit Lake and B-zone deposits are compared to the actual impacts. INTRODUCTIONThe environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project has been documented through the years in several submissions to the government agencies. In 1972, the environmental baseline study for the Rabbit Lake area was completed prior to any mining activity at the Rabbit Lake pit (Fig. 1).Sampling concentrated on Hidden Bay and Pow Bay, which received the treated effluent and the waters drained from Rabbit Lake respectively.A second baseline study was done on the Collins Bay area in 1980(Fig. I) in preparation for the mining of the B-zone pit. The detail in this study was considerably greater than the detail in the previous study. Collins Bay and Harrison Peninsula were the areas sampled. The B-zone deposit is being mined at present.With the discovery of the A-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposits, it was decided in 1986 to begin proceedings to obtain approval from Saskatchewan's Department of the Environment, and from the Atomic Energy Control Board to develop these deposits.In preparation, a third baseline study of both the Rabbit Lake and Collins Bay areas was done in 1986 and 1987. The emphasis was to establish the baseline at the three new deposits, to quantify the actual impacts of the existing Rabbit Lake operations and to confirm the Collins Bay B-zone (1980) impact predictions. The new deposits will allow us to continue to produce uranium into the future. In January 1988, Saskatchewan approval was received.Since 1975 in the Rabbit Lake area and 1980 in the Collins Bay area, routine environmental monitoring has been done. This has resulted in one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental data bases in North America in mining. By the time the Eagle Point deposit is mined to completion, there will have been data collected for approximately 40 years.Further discussions follow which describe the impacts of the past (1972 to 1984), the present (1985 to 1987) and the future. In addition, the past and present performances and the future plans of the .waste management systems will be discussed."

"This paper considers four aspects of autogenous grinding. Part 1 discusses statements on power efficiency of autogenous grinding compared to conventional crushing and grinding systems. It also demonstrates how high-power efficiency can be obtained from autogenous grinding systems. Part 2 considers a simple method of testing ores to determine the type of autogenous plant which can treat these ores on a commercial basis. A comparison of testing for simple small plants vs large plants or complex ores is included. Part 3 considers important aspects which have to be considered in proper design of an autogenous grinding system. Part 4 discusses problem ores and how they can be treated in an autogenous system. INTRODUCTIONAfter about 35 years of using autogenous grinding plants in the mining industry, it is perhaps time to review where we are with this, by now, relatively old development. Autogenous grinding in this paper means grinding run-of-mine ore by fully autogenous means or by using a ball charge to assist the grinding (semi-autogenous). Also, autogenous grinding can be eitherby dry or wet.The use of autogenous grinding in the fifties was making its slow start, and it was not until the sixties that more of the mining industry would consider its use . By the seventies, most builders of new plants would have considered autogenous grinding, whether they used it or not, in the final design.In the eighties, most large plants use autogenous mills and to reduce over-all operating costs, many older conventional plants are now looking and actually retrofitting these old plants with autogenous grinding mills.It is evident that many misconceptions concerning autogenous grinding are still current. Some come from improperly designed plants which result from poor test work. There are many considerations in the proper design of autogenous plants. Some ores have been found to give problems even in a well designed plant. These ore types are beginning to be classified and recognition in the test stage allows steps to be taken in the design so that these ores can be efficiently handled in autogenous grinding plants.Therefore, this paper will address the following aspects of autogenous grinding:1. Misconceptions regarding autogenous grinding.2. Testing of ores to ensure a well designed commercial plant.3. Important considerations in mill design.4. Difficult ores, their recognition and types of design to handle such ores."

However, the section on Cyclone Equipment, contains more general descriptions, to cover most of the cyclones used in mineral separation plants.Cyclones as heavy media separation vessels are discussed by Mark Freberg (this volume). Their use in tailings deslirning is discussed by P.C. Lighthall, eta/. (this volume).Cyclone EquipmentCyclone TerminologyApexObviously, the apex of a cone is the smallest end. However, with cyclones the term is usually used for the fitting which is attached there to control discharge of the underflow stream.Note that the cyclone need not be so mounted that the apex is the lowest point, although that is the most common method. Keeping the apex below the rest of the cyclone helps avoid plugging when the underflow contains very large particles and the tonnage of underflow solids can fluctuate.Various devices for adjusting apex diameter or otherwise controlling the underflow are discussed later under ""Cyclone Construction"".BypassingThe transport of a portion of feed slurry directly to underflow so that classification is bypassed by that portion of feed.This action is fundamental in any hydraulic classification, whether gravity or centrifugal, because the large particles going to underflow have some void volume between them, which remains filled with feed slurry.D50By definition, D50 is that particle size which has an equal probability of going to overflow or to underflow.It is calculated by drawing a curve of recovery vs particle size and noting the size at which 500Jo recovery occurs.This may be done equally with corrected or with gross recovery (see below) and the resulting value should therefore be identified as d50c (corrected d50) or as d500 (gross d50).Note also that it is common in industry practice to plot size analysis data on the retained size rather than on the average of passing and retained (the middle of the size band). To portray sizing alone it makes no difference, but to read a D50 value off a curve of corrected or gross recoveries, it is essential to plot those values on the average size of each band."

"IntroductionHistoricalCyanidation is a leaching process, in world-wide use, to extract gold (and silver) from ores and concentrates. The process has many inherent advantages on account of its adaptability:a. to any scale of operation;b. to a wide range of ore types and mineral associations;c. to a wide range of physical characteristics of the gold particle size, alloy (electrum) or mineral (telluride);d. to relatively simple plant controls and operating procedures;e. to simple marketing procedures and quick cash return.The basic idea for cyanidation was first described and patented by a German chemist, L. Elsner, in 1846. Some forty years later, J.S. McArthur, a metallurgical chemist and R.W. and W. Forrest, medical doctors, all of Glasgow, Scotland, came to realize the import of the discovery and accordingly, registered patents in Great Britain in 1887 and in the United States in 1889. The keystone of the McArthur-Forrest patent registration was the use of weak (0.05o/o) instead of strong (1.0%) solution.The years 1890-1910 saw much progress in equipment design and the advance from batch to continuous processing to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.In later years, technological progress followed advances in materials of construction and control systems. Current innovations include large-scale equipment, high-capacity thickeners, belt type filters and Steller, candle-type filters for plants using zinc dust precipitation. As well, environmental protection is increasingly a major concern.The technology of gold adsorption from cyanide solution onto activated carbon has made rapid strides in recent years. This has followed the initial efforts of Potter, Salisbury, Zadra and their colleagues of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Station in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the field work of Homestake Mining Company personnel, in Lead, South Dakota."

"This paper reviews the types of selective continuous miners (SCMs) available at present, and compares their main features. Furthermore, operating practices and mine planning aspects of the SCMs applications are reviewed and conditions for efficient application of this equipment are defined. Finally, the potential applications of the SCMs in surf ace mining of oil sands are discussed INTRODUCTIONIn the 1970s the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a program of investigations, design and demonstration of various continuous surface mining concepts, This included continuous mining equipment which was an adaptation of several civil engineering and/or underground mining machinery concepts to surface mining. Upon termination of this program, the related development was continued by a number of equipment manufacturers, leading to development of several types of SCMs. This new type of surface mining equipment is able to mine selectively hard and thin multi-layered formations at high, sustained, and economically viable production rates.While used mostly in coal mining at present, the characteristic features of this equipment permit conclusion that it may prove to be an efficient tool for surface mining of oil sand, and/or related overburden stripping. Of particular interest here may be the ability to mine thin layers of hard material, without a need for its earlier fragmentation, and the ability of the SCMs to load a variety of haulage equipment, including belt conveyors."

"A recent information sheet from the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Labour was sent to all Ministry inspectors and engineers. The subject title was' 'Two Brakes on a Hoist Carrying Persons"" and it quotes mining regulation 699, sub-section 206(i):No hoist shall be used for the transporting of persons unless it has a braking system consisting of at least two sets of mechanical brakes to stop and hold the drum for the shaft conveyance transporting the persons.The intent of the regulation is that each of these brakes is to be set so that, individually, they can safely stop the drum carrying persons and also hold the drum without movement with the maximum manload.This can be achieved in the following ways: Single Drum Hoist-one brake on each side of the drum, one brake on the drum, one brake on the pinion shaft, where disc brakes are used two separate disc brake assemblies on the disc. Double Drum Hoist, brakes on companion drum can serve as backup brake only pinion brake with one drum unclutched.Friction Hoist, one brake on each side of drum As new hoists can be manufactured easily with a two-brake system, attention will be focused on retrofitting pinion brakes to older hoists.A brake mounted on a pinion shaft is designed purely as an emergency brake in the event of main brake failure , controls malfunction, and power loss."

"IntroductionGravity concentration, the separation of two or more minerals due to the difference in their relative specific gravity and usually in a fluid medium, is the oldest recorded form of mineral processing.The principles of gravity concentration were known to, and practiced by, the ancients and Hoover's commentary to De Re Meta/lied'' notes many early references.Over the centuries, as direct smelting ores became more and more uncommon, the mineral processing industry developed and along with it many varied methods of concentration. Gravity concentration declined rapidly in importance in the early twentieth century, and it is only in the last decade that its advantages are being re-evaluated.A significant proportion of ores are processed by gravity; a large proportion being in the iron and coal industries<'>, or in the treatment at very high volume of relatively coarse alluvial deposits. The tin dredges of South East Asia and Beach sand plants of Australia are prime examples.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. A list is given in Table 1; this list is not exhaustive.Principle of Gravity ConcentrationGravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid, such as water or air.The relative movement of minerals to one another is achieved by a variety of methods. These are: separation in a fluid of intermediate density (heavy media separation); by stratification (such as in jigging); in a flowing fluid (cones, spirals, sluices etc.) and with a horizontal shear (shaking tables etc.)."

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

"Bioleach testing and piloting was conducted on refractory gold sulphide concentrate from Austin Gold Venture in Nevada during 1988. The objective of the test programme was to determine the technical and commercial viability of bioleaching as a concentrate pretreatment step prior to gold extraction by cyanidation. Baseline CIL cyanidation typically resulted in < 20% gold extraction from the Austin concentrate. Bioleaching enhanced gold extraction up to 95% using conventional CIL techniques. This paper summarizes the bioleach test programme and results, including pilot plant studies onsite, and describes the commercial design details for a possible retrofit of the Austin flotation tailings leach circuit to accommodate 20 tpd and 40 tpd capacity concentrate bioleach facilities.INTRODUCTIONBioleach testing on a refractory carbonaceous sulphide concentrate from Austin Gold Venture (AGV), was initiated in late 1987 as part of an ongoing programme at Austin to investigate alternatives to concentrate smelting. Preliminary batch biooxidation tests at Coastech indicated that over 90% gold extraction by carbon-in-leach (CIL) cyanidation of the bioleach residue could be achieved, compared with less than 20% gold extraction on untreated concentrate by similar CIL processing.Subsequently, a more rigorous laboratory study was undertaken at Coastech to establish continuous biooxidation operating criteria on a bench scale. The objective of continuous testing in the laboratory was to provide confirmation of enhanced CIL response based on continuous bioleach products and to determine key process operating and design parameters for pilot testing. The success of the laboratory test program led to the installation of a mobile pilot plant at Austin Gold Venture. The plant was operated by Coastech and AGV during 1988 to provide scaleup data and design criteria for commercial design and feasibility analysis. Based on pilot plant operating data, a detailed commercial bioleach plant was designed as a possible retrofit to the existing 1000 tpd CIL plant. Capital and operating costs were estimated to provide a commercial feasibility study of bioleaching as an oxidative pretreatment for Austin refractory concentrate."

"Function and ApplicationsWater-only cyclones, (WOC) are a dynamic mineral separator which cause minerals to separate in a water medium by virtue of difference in specific gravity. Figure 1 shows diagramatic plan and sectional views of a water-only cyclone.A slurry of mineral matter and water is fed through the inlet opening under gravitational or pump pressure. The combined effect of centrifugal action and conical shape is to concentrate the heaviest fraction of mineral on the periphery and bottom of the cyclone. This layer of higher specific gravity particles increases in thickness and density between the cyclone inlet and apex. The action in the bed of higher gravity particles formed in the flattened portion of the cone surrounding the tip of the vortex finder deter;nines the specific gravity of separation or cut-point. Mineral particles of lower specific gravity flow with the bulk of the water, out the vortex finder. Mineral particles of higher specific gravity flow with little water out the apex. A more technically e:mct description of the functioning of the water-only cyclone can be found in previous publications noted in the references.The water-only cyclone was invented and refined by J. Vis man, formerly of the Canadian Mines Branch staff, between 1958 and 1965. The first industrial application noted in the literature was when it was introduced as a cleaner for fine coal in 1962. Since 1970 the water-only cyclone has become a common separation apparatus in many Canadian and foreign coal processing plants. The only other mineral industry application known to the author is in separation of gold bearing heavy minerals from sand<'>. The potential does exist for other applications and this area deserves to be investigated more thoroughly than it has been."

"A detailed study of the compositional relationships of the Uand Th-bearing minerals in Elliot Lake uranium ores has been conducted, particularly with regard to uranothorite, which clearly plays a critical role in hydrometallurgical processing. Application of the rotating disc progressive-leaching technique to individual mineral grains and intergrowths of known compositions has defined for the first time the solubilization behaviour ofthe minerals in question.In descending order of leachability, regardless of leaching conditions, the phases are: uranothorite, uraninite, and monazite. Inclusions of secondary uranothorite enhance the dissolution kinetics of uraninite, which exhibits a complex dissolution mode. U-rich uranothorite dissolves more readily than Th-rich. Monazite is soluble in HJ)04 and HCI solutions only at temperatures exceeding 85°C. Consequently, it is deduced that the 15% to 20% of thorium not leached from the ore is lost both as monazite and as uranothorite inclusions locked in monazite which persists to the tailings. INTRODUCTIONThe importance of precise information on the mineralogy of ore and gangue constituents for the optimization of metal recovery in hydrometa Uurgical processing has been recognized for some years (e.g. Burkin, 1969), and numerous investigations integrating mineralogical studies and experimental leaching have been reported for ores of gold, nickel, copper and uranium (see summary by Henley, 1983). The complex mineralogy of uranium ores hosted by Precambrian pyritiferous, quartz-pebble, conglomerates has prompted particular attention in this regard (e.g. Liebenberg, 1956; Liebenberg and Taverner, 1958; Feather and Snegg, 1978). In the great majority of documented studies, however, petrographic examination has been followed by bulk leaching, an approach which, although providing valuable information, does not permit precise definition of the evolution of mineral dissolution processes. The authors contend that experimentation involving the step-by-step leaching and mineralogical study of ores is more likely to reveal the actual dissolution events which control the release of metals and, hence, may better define the optimal conditions for hydrometallurgical processing. Such studies (e.g. Hausen, 1983; Horlick et al., 1981) in addition lend themselves to the prediction of changes in the leaching behaviour of ores in which one or more mineralogical feature is subject to modification, a common characteristic of mineral deposits."

"IntroductionThe typical potash processing plant recovers and/ or upgrades from 10% to 20% of its production through the recrystallization process. The feed to the recrystallization section consists of preconcentrated slurries of fine crystal size that cannot be raised to the required product grade by flotation and fine dusts also of low grade and too fine for compaction feed. It produces high grade white potash crystals that can be marketed as a high grade product or blended into the flotation products to raise their grade. In this chapter, a typical leaching (dissolving) and recrystallization operation will be discussed.The crystallization process makes use of the three phase system chemistry of NaCl, KCl, and H,O. The normal potash process operates on a temperature range of 75°F to 95 °F. A three phase slurry feed to the dissolving circuits will be within that range. The potash (KCl) is dissolved by heating the slurry in the presence of sufficient brine to a temperature of 190°F to 200°F. As the slurry is heated, the potash (KCI) dissolves and the salt (NaCI) precipitates. The potash rich brine is then clarified and the salt and other undissolved solids removed by thickening. Clarified brine becomes the crystallizer feed.The hot brine is cooled in evaporative cooling crystallizers. In cooling, the potash precipitates as a high grade white crystal. Crystallization is done in multiple effects to permit energy recovery and control of the process. In a four effect crystallizer the cooling is done by recycling mother liquor counter currently through the first two effect condensors and using brine pond brine for the cooling of the last two.The crystallizer product is removed from the last effect as a slurry at normal process temperature and is fed either to its own centrifuging and drying circuit or blended with the flotation product for centrifuging and drying."

"IntroductionThis chapter will discuss the operational and maintenance aspects of a heavy media cyclone circuits as applied to coal processing and using magnetite as the media. It deals with heavy media bath separators in terms of types of media, equipment, circuits, media recovery, maintenance, and product handling. It will detail heavy media cyclone operation and supplement the previously described topics.The heavy media cyclone was first developed in the Netherlands by the Dutch State Mines in 1945. A cyclone plant was not built in North America until 1961. Traditionally, heavy media cyclones have been used to treat size fractions between 1lz in. (12 .6 mm) and 35 mesh (0.5 mm). High maintenance related to heavy media bath separators has recently prompted some plants to crush all raw coal to minus 2 in. for treatment in heavy media cyclones.The heavy media bath separators utilize only the force of gravity to make the separation between heavy and light particles. This requires lengthy retention time which can lower capacity and also is inefficient for finer particles. A heavy media cyclone utilizes centrifugal forces which are 20 to 200 times greater than the force of gravity. This means the separation between coal and the impurities occurs very quickly, therefore a low retention time is required allowing cyclones to have high tonnage capacities. Also these greater forces allow better separation for the finer particle sizes.Heavy media cyclones are now widely used to produce both metallurgical and thermal coal. Work is in progress to reduce magnetite consumption, extend wear life, increase tonnage capacity, improve separation efficiency and automatically control these cyclone circuits."

"High narrow backfills of significant strike length approach the stress conditions associated with a free standing wall but this lower bound design approach is not considered efficient for earth structures. This paper considers the design of high narrow backfills using upper bound limit analysis, retaining wall theory with backfill arching and centrifuge model tests. Complex toe support situations pertaining to operational factors at Falconbridge&apos;s Lockerby Mine are investigated. It is shown that the susceptibility of high narrow fills to toppling is much lower than anticipated from the retaining wall analysis and that toppling can be avoided by a suitable toe support. It is also concluded that adhesion between the fill and an adjacent pillar can markedly increase the stability of the fill. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge&apos;s Lockerby Mine pillar projects will expose cemented tailings backfills to heights (H) up to 55 m. The exposed backfills may have strike lengths (L) greater than the heights but are relatively narrow, having widths (w) of up to 12 m. The bulk cement content of the fills varies from 8.3% (12.1 T:C) to 3.0% (33.1 T:C). Exposed faces may have up to a metre of overhang due to stope overblasting, as shown in Figure 1. These fills have a solids specific gravity of close to 3.0 and were placed at a pulp density of about 68%. The tailings have a fairly uniform grain size with 32% less than 0.075 mm (200 sieve) and about 12% slimes (less than 0.02 mm sizes). The fill exposed by early pillar removal will be backed by adjacent, near vertical, ore pillars. Future pillar removal may expose similar fills which are not supported by an adjacent ore pillar but which will be backed by either an open void or by uncemented backfill. Furthermore, these fills may be undercut when the pillar slot is driven, further reducing stability (case 3, Fig. I) or a wedge could be left to help support the fill (case 2, Fig . 1). This paper presents limit equilibrium analyses for these various backfill conditions in a 22: 1 T:C fill and com- pares the results to data from centrifuge model studies at a scale factor of A= 157 as indicated in Figure I. Prototype fills have a 6 m deep cone plug of 16:1 T:C which is accounted for in the comparison of centrifuge model test with analytical results."

"The composition and the possible utilization of a slag sample from a nickel smelter operation in the Sudbury district were investigated. The sample containing 0.136% Ni, 0.10% Co and 0.29% Cu could be characterized as a fayalit e slag with a sulphide bearing glass matrix. While the fayalite contains most of the Co, Ni is enriched within both sulphides and fayalite. Cu is only present in higher amounts in sulphides or metallic droplets. This, as well as the small grain sizes of the mineral phases, inhibits significant enrichment by mechanical methods. However preconcentration is possible by means of magnetic separation. An effective hydro metallurgical approach proved to be oxygen pressure leaching with sulphuric acid. Accordingly, the method proposed for processing the investigated slags is to combine the normal utilization as coarse construction material with pressure leaching of the fines and the ground upgraded magnetic fraction. Besides the recovery of base metals, the leaching process yields fine-grained residues, which, after addition of CaD, will set to a cement-like material, or can be used as a pozzolanic cement colour. INTRODUCTIONDuring the pyro metallurgical processing of nickel ores, the valuable metals nickel, cobalt and copper are enriched within the sulphide matte, similar to the smelting of copper ores. The resulting waste materials are slags, which may still contain valuable metal contents of up to 0.5% or above . These contents are close to the cut-off grades of some nickel-cop per-cobalt deposits. The methods that are used to recover copper from slags comprise in general further pyro metallurgical treatment, often after enrichment by flotation. Another area of application for such slags is their use as construction material. However, this might cause environmental problems if nickel containing dusts are produced.Based on one example, the characerization and a possible way of complete utilization of nickel smelter slag s as construction materials in combination with partial base metal recovery are described in this paper. "1. Belt-Drop Agglomeration Preferred at Heap Leach Operations. The agglomeration method now preferred at heap leach operations utilizes belt-drops along conveyors. Belt-drop agglomeration is being designed into numerous upcoming heap leach operations. It offers substantial capital cost savings over previously favored drum agglomerators. It has such significant operating and maintenance advantages that some drum agglomerators have been retired in favor of belt-drops.The majority of heap leach operations are now built with crushing included in the flowsheet. If crushing is included, belt-drop agglomeration can be added for almost no cost. The agglomeration equipment is simply a few conveyor transfers, designed to provide the tumbling and rolling action which forms the agglomerates. Controlled water sprays are needed at each of these agglomeration transfers. Cement or lime is added as a binder, to stabilize the agglomerates. This reagent is also needed to raise pH to safe operating levels.Addition of the pH control reagent before stacking the ore offers a reagent cost benefit. In the belt-drop mixing technique, the ore is intimately mixed with the lime (or cement). After stacking on the heaps, when the cyanide solution is sprayed onto the high-ph ore, very little cyanide is consumed. Without the pre-addition of lime or cement, the leach solution is sprayed onto neutral ore. The mixture of high-pH leach solution and neutral pH ore causes the solution pH to drop, releasing cyanide gas. This release is minor from a safety viewpoint, much less than dangerous, but the gas release is a costly waste of the cyanide reagent. Pilot-scale comparison tests were made at Pinson. Ore pre-treated with lime or cement showed 30% less cyanide consumption than untreated ore."

"Possible mechanisms of microsilica dust formation and factors affecting its quantity have been discussed. General mathematical models to predict the dust quantity based on electrical and coke consumptions, and flue gas temperature as functions of silicon recovery in the process and silicon content of the alloy have been established. It has also been shown that the flue gas temperature can be used as an additional process control parameter. Comments are made on the effect of the dust formation on the whole process economics and it is pointed out that the formed microsilica dust is a valuable by-product and not an industrial waste. INTRODUCTIONFerrosilicon is produced in electric arc furnaces with submerged electrodes. The charge mixture consist s mainly of quartzite, coke as the reducing agent and iron chips. The products are ferro silicon and carbon monoxide, various other volatile materials, water vapour and silicon monoxide gas. Carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide oxidize at the charge surface when mixed with air entering through the furnace hood openings. The off-gas contains a considerable amount of dust, which is mainly very fine particles of silica formed as a result of oxidation. The emission of dust containing gases to the atmosphere causes serious pollution problems to the environment. Therefore, the control of the formation of the dust, preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere, and dealing with this very fine dust collected from the flue gases represent important technological and economical parameters in the ferrosilicon production industry.This paper is concerned with the relations between the quantity of formed micro silica dust, as a function of both silicon recovery and silicon content in the alloy, and various other technological parameters; and their possible effects on the energy consumption and economics of the whole process."

"A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

However, before concentrating in any detail on these it is important to understand the broad purposes and basic techniques of any accounting system in any major business.The three broad purposes of an Accounting System are:- Administering, controlling, and recording the flow of cash in and out of the business. Cash is, of course, converted into other assets (or stores of value) such as inventory, plant and equipment, etc. These assets also have to be administered, controlled and recorded.- Internal reporting to Management for information, for control, and for use in making business plans and decisions. - External reporting to stockholders, government, lenders and other outside parties.In this chapter we shall organize our discussion of accounting practice in mineral processing plants around these three purposes of accounting and focus in some detail on specific practices and techniques with which operating personnel will be routinely involved. "The most cost-effective method of placement of the high strength fill used in the Cannon Mine&apos; s overhand cut-and-f ill bench stopes was determined to be truck haulage. Constraint s imposed by the mine layout dictated the use of a truck which could dump its load in a fifteen-foot high drift. The Dux Teledumper truck was selected as the most suitable unit for this application based upon operational and maintenance parameters which included a telescoping, tilting dump box; large load capacity; and robust construction. Development of the truck continues through the cooperation between the manufacturer and user. INTRODUCTIONThe Cannon Mine is situated in the centre of Washington state, approximately midway between the cities of Spokane on the east and Seattle on the west. The mine complex is located three block s south of the Wenatchee city limits at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountain range.Asam era Minerals (U.S.) Inc., with 5I% ownership, operates the Cannon Mine. Breakwater Resources, Ltd. holds the remaining 49%.Annual paroduction is 520 000 tons per year, presently on a 21-shift per week operating schedule for both the mine and the mill.All production is presently won by overhand bench stoping with backfill. Stoping starts with 15-ft high by 24- or 30-ft wide sill cuts driven above and below a stope block . A drop rai se and slot are used to open a bench which is then slabbed toward the open slot. Truck-placed backfill is dumped into the mined - out stope from the upper sill cut. This stoping sequence is repeated until the top of the ore block is reached . The top sill cut is then tightly filled with backfill to minimize subsidence and to provide adequate roof support during extraction of the pillars.Mining equipment consists of hydraulic drills and rubber-tired, diesel scoops and trucks."
