"This study investigated the psychrometric properties of ventilating air in GAL coal mines. Related measurements were done in underground openings and have been arranged as input data for computer programs prepared for ventilation network and psychrometric analysis.Results obtained from network analysis have been used for psychrometric analysis of ventilating air. Changes in heat and moisture content of air in two major path s between entry and discharge of ventilating air have been investigated. Psychrometric processes occurring in the mine were determined and are shown graphically in Figures 1 and 2. Special attention has been given to determine the changes in psychrometric properties and processes involved in the faces. Results are outlined in this paper.IntroductionThe psychrometric properties of mine air are important factors to mine productivity and efficiency. Therefore, psychrometric analysis should be made for all underground mines; any undesired situation observe d could be corrected by taking the necessary precautions.The analyses were done as a case study for GAL mines, the only mechanized lignite coal mine in Turkey. In this mine, workable reserve is about 300 million tons of coal and yearly planned production is 2.2 million tons. Production is continuing from a coal measure-bed having two coal seams with average thicknesses of 1.52 m and 1.72 m respectively. A 0.85 m shale band exists between these two seams.Two full y-mechanized faces, approximately 220 m long, usually work simultaneously. All measurements, including mine gases and air velocity, are done by sensors connected to a control room by a monitoring system.In the analysis, a line diagram is utilized to described the mine on which every junction and branch is numbered."

It can improve productivity for the overall benefit of an operation. Organizations can therefore use training as a mean to achieve their specific goals. Training is not the solution to every performance problem. However, in many cases, it can be a very effective way to attain desired performance.The benefits of training are often difficult to assess. However, to remain competitive, organizations must introduce new products and innovative technologies. Often, they can do both most effectively through suitable training interventions.In order for the effort and investment of training to provide optimal results, two points of view should be adopted.• An overall view of the system in which training is to be applied.• A systematic approach to the design of training (Stolovitch and Keeps, 1989)."

"As part of a major reconstruction and expansion of the Majdanpek Copper Mine, an investigation and optimization of the flotation collector regime was undertaken. The flotation response of the major minerals to various reagents and the effect of pulp chemistry was studied from both a fundamental and practical point of view. These studies led to plant trials and the eventual adoption of a modified collector suite which improved both copper and gold recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe Majdanpek Copper Mine processes 40,000 tons per day of ore containing about 0.43% cu. In addition to copper, the ore also contains recoverable quantities of molybdenite and gold. The mine has been in operation since 1961 and is the largest in Yugoslavia. It is currently undergoing major reconstruction and expansion. The flowsheet of the Majdanpek concentrator is shown on Figure 1.The ore body is variable in composition and changes in mill feed require proper control of operating variables to achieve the optimum metallurgical results. A detailed study including grindability, flotation response, and solid-liquid separation was carried out on several samples of the ore. Flotation response and the choice of reagent chemistry were found to be very important in achieving the highest recoveries of metal values. An automatic reagent control scheme insured that optimum dosages were used in the plant.The flotation collectors used at the present time include sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX), AERO 3302 Promoter and AERO 5415 Promoter. The addition of AERO 5415 to the reagent suite is a recent development and was based on the favorable results obtained in the extensive laboratory testing program conducted to establish the optimum reagent combination and dosages. Subsequent plant tests confirmed that AERO 5415 provided significant improvements in copper and gold recoveries. A description of the mineralogy of the Majdanpek ore and details of laboratory and plant metallurgical data are given in this paper. The chemistry of AERO 5415 Promoter and its interaction with minerals relevant to Majdanpek ore are also discussed."

Some are passed on from father to son, some are part of the pride of good farming, some wells are famous for tapping that huge underground stream or have been mysteriously witched or have been part of a rip-off by an unscrupulous well driller. Some have to be babied so that the cows can be watered, the children can have showers and the dishes can be done. All wells represent a significant $5,000 to $10,000 investment and is a key to making a living or sustaining a reasonable lifestyle.Most wells continue to provide water faithfully - until there is a problem. For those people living next to a mine, there is the additional concern that mining has or will affect their water well supplies. Water well problems reported to the mining company have to be dealt with promptly and responsibly. The mining company's groundwater specialist must gain the trust and confidence of well owners living in the area ."

"The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."

This paper documents the 1988 discovery and subsequent evaluation (to 1991) of diamond bearing kimberlites in the Fort à la Corne area, Saskatchewan, by Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. Cameco Corporation began participating as a joint venture partner (50%) in mid-1989. The first indications that kimberlite-type intrusions might exist in the area carne from Geological Survey of Canada aeromagnetic maps. Because of the overburden thickness (over 100 m), magnetometer surveys continue to be the main exploration tool in defining pipe locations and sizes. Magnetometer surveys in varying levels of detail have outlined one main cluster and two sub-clusters, the main group being some 10 km by 50 km in size. In excess of 70 individual targets have been interpreted from the magnetics as probably representing kimberlites. The size range of the individual magnetically-defined bodies is between 1 ha and 74 ha. Proof that the magnetic anomalies were kimberlite intrusions carne in 1989 when each of seven test holes, all drilled on different targets, intersected the potential diamond host rock. The majority of the targets tested were diamond-bearing, with the indicator mineral chemistries suggesting that both peridotitic and ecIogitic diamond parageneses could be expected. To date, 18 individual kimberlite bodies have been drill-tested. A total of 39 bulk samples, amounting to 186 t (representing 360 t of theoretical sample recoveries) were processed in 1990 and 1991. One hundred and sixty diamonds were recovered, averaging 0.04 carats in weight, the largest being 0.6 carats. Most of the bulk sample grades are less than 2 carats/loo t; only three bulk samples have higher grades, the best being approximately 10.5 carats/l00 1. The diamonds are predominantly gem-quality stones.

Abstract -The rare-earth elements (REE) form a significant part of the group of so-called "high­ technology" metals whose glamour has attracted both the scientific community and the mining industry. Despite this attraction, world production of REE declined abruptly in 1985 and only recently has begun to approach production levels of 1984. The decline in 1985 was primarily due to decreased demand for light REE used as catalysts in the production of lead-bearing gasoline. Incorporated within the current trend toward increased production of REE is an increasing demand for higher value elements such as yttrium and other members of the heavy REE group, and for specific REE rather than mixed products . The former demand has made some Canadian deposits and prospects economically attractive despite a surplus of REE reserves on a world scale. The chief attractions of Canadian deposits such as Strange Lake, Labrador-Quebec, Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, and Kipawa, Quebec, are that they are relatively rich in yttrium and other heavy REE compared to light REE, and that they offer a potential security of supply to counterbalance the rapidly escalating dominance of China in the world market.

"As a mining engineer with over 50 years' experience in underground operations and mine planning, I appreciate the enormous amount of work that went into the paper; and despite an imbalance between geology-geostatistics and the profit-earning actions of mining and treating (possibly because of sponsorship only by the Geological Society), I agree with probably 85% of the detail. But the paper fails to build on its own sound foundations and, like many predecessors, drifts instead into idealism. Even the starting quotation from the US SEC Form S-18 is little more than a platitude. An American consultant (l) has observed: ""an evaluation that accepts ore reserves as guaranteed because their definition meets SEC criteria is an invitation to disaster"".Idealism enshrines at least two myths that have bedevilled definition over the last several decades. The first is that the only purpose of 'ore reserves' is to promise successful new mines, and that 'ore reserves' must necessarily follow feasibility studies.In practice, the identification of what is likely to be mined if a mine is started must often be done on broad economics long before the feasibility study, and there may be only little later flexibility. The second myth is that there can be a perfect deposit with a simple exploration-appraisal-development sequence (the paper's Figure 2) against which all inferiors can be matched. If the field of definition be regarded as a pyramid, the quest for perfection and the imposition of rigid promises upon the terms 'ore' and 'reserves' drive definitions so near the apex (or the bottom right corner of Figure I, if preferred) that little is left to define. The process is reminiscent of the legendary super-medicine, the one so powerful that the patient had to be in perfect health to take it!"

"Graphite is one of the most versatile of non-metallic minerals because of its diversified properties, for example: it is unctuous; it marks readily; burns slowly; is almost chemically inert; is flexible over a large temperature range; is a good conductor of heat and electricity; is hydrophobic; has a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity; has excellent weathering properties; tends to emulsify with water-in-oil; is readily soluble in iron; and after oxidative treatment, can exfoliate like vermiculite. These properties give rise to its major uses in lubrication, refractories, marking instruments, electrical products and paints.Flake graphite is the variety which commonly occurs in Canada; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec contain the deposits of economic significance, although graphite occurs in other provinces. The beneficiation of graphite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting graphite 's importance as an industrial mineral. Thirty-eight studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1918and 1989anda review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results; flotation parameters and reagent concentration data are presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of graphite ores from a variety of origins."

"Gold, because of low head grade and recovery, is usually of minor importance in the economics of base metal flotation mills. Because of the above little metallurgical attention is usually provided to gold in these mills. But collectively, the gold losses can be significant. For instance, Noranda presently has interest in 13 base metal flotation mills with a collective gold recovery of only 50%. Gold losses are in the order of 150.000 oz per year!The Noranda Technology Centre, in cooperation with Noranda's milling operations, has been investigating the potential of gravity concentration of gold from base metal flotation mills. This paper outlines the pilot and plant testing conducted at three operations with distinctly different ore types; porphyry copper, complex massive sulphide and polymetallic semi-massive sulphide. Testing has been with the Knelson Concentrator which has proven to successfully recover fine gold in a simple, trouble free circuit. Discussion of issues which have risen from the testwork is included. INTRODUCTIONGold, because of low head grade and recovery, is usually of minor importance in the economics of poly-metallic base metal ores. TABLE I presents gold heads and recovery for some of Noranda's base metal mills. It should be noted that the stated recoveries are to payable concentrates, but does not reflect the actual payable gold recovery which in cases is significantly lower. Noranda's average gold recovery into a gold payable concentrates is about 45%. This equates to a collective loss in the order of $57 MM per year of gold"

Abstract -The Key Anacon deposit consists of four sulfide zones called, from south to north : Key Anacon No. 1, Key Anacon No. 2, Key Anacon No. 3, and Key Anacon Copper Zone. Massive sulfides of zones 1, 2, and 3 are underlain by rocks correlated with the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and are overlain by matie volcanic rocks correlative with the Boucher Brook Formation. In contrast to zones 1, 2, and 3, narrow northwesterly-trend.ing, copper-rich fracture zones occur within the Patrick Brook Formation. Sulfides in zone 2 occur as three mineralogical associations, namely: pyrite-chalcopyrite, pyrite-sphalerite-galerta, and pyrrhotite-sphalerite-galerta. The distribution of lithologies and en-echelon patterns of the three sulfide lenses of Key Anacon No. 2 zone are the result of F1 and F2 folding. Zone 2 is the most promising economically, with proven reserves of 1.11 million tonnes grading 0.2207o Cu, 3.47% Pb, 8.41% Zn, and 96 g/t Ag; the zone is open below a depth of 427 m.

"Poor fragmentation, high toe areas, excessive shovel wear and tear and frequent re-drilling and blasting of certain tough waste rock zones in the Lomex pit in the early 1980snecessitateda better understanding of these zones.A combination of geotechnical mapping, penetration rate data, toe elevation contouring and observations on shovel and drill performance were used to determine the character and extent of these zones. This complementary information was brought together by the geotechnical mapper and the explosives supervisor.Distinct zones with particular geological characteristics were determined. A classification system with three types of blast and dig-ability was developed for the Lomex pit and later applied to the Valley pit, with considerable success. The three blast zone types are called ""poor"", ""f air"", and ""good"". This system will be described in detail.The explosives supervisor adjusted the blasting parameters to each zone, in particular, pattern spacing and burden. The resulting powder factors showed considerable variation between the poor, fair and good zones within each pit as well as between the two pits. Pattern geometry and length of collar were also adjusted to improve fragmentation. Cost savings resulted from less re-drilling and less wear and tear on drills and shovels in the poor zones and more efficient use of explosives in all the zones. An annual estimated cost savings of well in excess of $1,000,000 is realized at Highland Valley Copper. A by-product of the mapping was the determination of unstable structures and water flowing zones. Blasting was then adapted to this information for enhanced slope stability."

"The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec. Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

Utilizing such resources will provide increased availability, lower inventory requirements, fewer last minute disasters, and lower cost per ton for maintenance. High production from premium quality equipment can only be realized by good planning and care, executed by maintenance and operating personnel acting cooperatively.IntroductionAccurate information is the key to accurate decision making. In today' s competitive industry, mines' teeter on the brink between profit and loss. Their survival will be predicated on their ability to retrieve, analyze, and formulate accurate information regarding the operating costs of mobile equipment. This paper deals with the impact of managing equipment operating costs and introduces a computerized control system designed for monitoring and controlling these costs.Caterpillar has produced several computerized modelling programs designed at taking the guesswork out of equipment selection and management. The most basic of these is Equipment Investment Analysis (E.LA.). This model compares two or more alternatives over the projected life of the machine. It deals with comparisons in the owning and operating costs of equipment, as well as, their productivity over a specified period of time.In order for a computer model to be credible as a decision making tool, it must be simple to use and the results measurable and accountable . Caterpillar has introduced several computer models to assist the industry in selecting and managing an equipment fleet. These programs allow the user to predict and monitor the operating costs and production capability of mobile equipment. They are often used in the machine selection process to select equipment which best suits a mine's long-term cost per tonne objectives. After the optimum selection is made, Caterpillar's Maintenance Control System provides an efficient management tool to monitor and verify the data used in the selection model."

"IntroductionThe development of British Columbia's northeast coal deposits, represents the single biggest industrial undertaking in British Columbia's history.As a result of this development, several thousand jobs were created, hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and billions of dollars in new foreign exchange began flowing into Canada.The Northeast Coal Development began in 1981 with the signing of sales contracts to ship a total of 6.5 million tonnes of metallurgical and additional quantities of thermal coal annually to Japan over a 15-year period. The current long-term agreements contain provisions for extension to 20 years.The sales contracts with a group of Japanese steel mills were signed by two Vancouver-based mining companies, Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation. The agreements followed years of exploration and negotiation beginning in 1968.The first shipment of coal from Quintette and Teck's Bullrnoose Mine was transported by BC Rail and Canadian National Railways to the Ridley Island coal port in the fall of 1983."

"This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. "Environmental concerns have recently been growing over the disposal of reactive desulphurizing slag. Consequently, increased pressure has been placed on the foundry industry to reduce the reactivity of this slag.To address this problem, Cyanamid has developed a new product which significantly reduces the calcium carbide content of the desulphurizing slag. Testing equipment and procedures have also been developed to evaluate both the existing levels of carbide in the slag and the decreased levels which are achieved with this new material.The development and use of this engineered carbide desulphurizer has made possible significant environmental and efficiency improvements in the field of calcium carbide desulphurizing. Consequently, the lifespan of calcium carbide in ductile iron desulphurization has been increased, as have the benefits of its use in the foundry industry. IntroductionIn the production of ductile iron, calcium carbide has long been used for hot metal desulphurization external to the cupola. Its cost effectiveness, reliability and ease of use have traditionally made it the desulphurizer of choice for a great majority of ductile operations. Recently however, environmental concerns have been raised regarding the quantity of calcium carbide remaining in the slag after desulphurizing. Analysis has shown that as much as 25070 of the weight of the slag may contain active carbide. "ForewordPart I of this paper, published in the March 1992 issue of the CIM Bulletin, surveyed the probable consequences of a limitation on the emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere for the steel industry. What might be termed the conventional responses to this restriction open to the industry were also surveyed in that section. This section, Part II of the paper, explores a new option - the possibility for the joint production of iron and liquid fuels useful for transportation purposes. In this case, it is shown that it is important to minimize the production of carbon dioxide during the reduction stage to maximize the proportion of the reductant carbon embodied in the fuel. It is also advantageous to conserve hydrogen in the reduction step. In essence, the same carbon fulfills two purposes: it serves as a reductant and fuel for ironmaking and then as a constituent of a liquid fuel. If recovered plastics could be used in ironmaking, the same carbon could serve three useful purposes in turn. The conditions and limitations for the joint use of carbon in such 'cascading' processes are explored below. ABSTRACTIt is becoming increasingly probable that emissions of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuels will have to be reduced to deal with the threat of global warming. This issue is likely to be resolved one way or the other in the period 1995 to 2000 which does not leave much time to develop responsive options. In the intervening period, the policy of the Government of Canada is to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases at their 1990 level by 2000, by encouraging greater efficiency in the use of energy. Should further reductions prove necessary, economic instruments would probably be employed but these would not be applied before a comprehensive international agreement is reached.There are three main themes in this paper: it is assumed that measures to control carbon dioxide emissions will in fact be necessary by the turn of the century; that there will be a rising need for liquid fuels to supply the world's steadily growing fleet of motor vehicles for many years to come, and that the future niche for Canada's industry in such a carbon-constrained world will be the operation of the energy-intensive industries with efficiency and environmental sensitivity.The steel industry, as a large user of both coal and energy in other forms, would be significantly affected by a need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This paper first examines what might be called the conventional responses open to the industry in such a situation and then explores a new possibility for making better use of carbon by the co-production of iron and liquid fuels."

The results indicate that cable bolt capacity most critically depends on the grout uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the radial confinement, and the embedment length.In the laboratory &apos;split-pipe&apos; tests were conducted using P VC, aluminum and steel pipes to provide radial confinement, and field test sites were chosen in granite, limestone and shale rock masses. For both datasets higher capacities were obtained under conditions of higher radial confinement. A correlation between the two was obtained through a comparison of the radial wall stiffness of the laboratory pipes with that of the field boreholes as measured using a high pressure dilatometer. Cable bolt capacity was found to increase with embedment length though not in direct proportionality.The use of low water cement ratio grouts (<0.40) can increase cable bolt capacities by 50% to 75%. This effect is maximized under conditions of high radial confinement. However, the use of super thick grout paste (0.30 and less) may be both impractical and undesirable, first because of their limited pumpability and second because of their inconsistency in strength. Grouts with a water cement ratio of between 0.35 and 0.40 are recommended for practical cable bolt applications."

In transitional mineralization, the sill of the underlying variogram is relatively easily estimated, but the estimation of the nugget effect may be more difficult. This study aims to determine for massive copper deposits just how sensitive the estimations of ore reserve, economic copper content, total net value, and ultimate pit limits are to the errors of estimation in the nugget effect of the spherical variogram model. A massive copper deposit which has a log-normal distribution and a spherical variogram was simulated on a rectangular grid using the turning bands method. By using the three dimensional random kriging method, the mean block grades were estimated at four different sampling densities. The ultimate pit-limits were determined by using the two-dimensional dynamic programming algorithm. To calculate the estimation errors, the values obtained by using the actual nugget effect and structured component values were deducted from the estimations obtained using the incorrect nugget effect and structured component values. For isotropic massive copper deposits, it was found that the ratio of the nugget effect to the structured component of the spherical variogram has no significant effect on either the block grades estimated by the kriging method or on the ultimate pit limits.
