"Misty Mountain Gold Limited (MGL - TSE VSE, MGLCF - NASDAQ) of Vancouver, owns the Harmony Gold Project located in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. The deposit contains a mineable reserve of 2.3 million ounces of gold, at a 1.2 g/t cut-off and an average grade of 2.1 1 g/t Au.Discovered in 1970 and frequently investigated by previous owners, full-scale production has not yet occurred because of the complex metallurgy of the deposit. Recent process studies that were completed in six months at Process Research Associates Ltd. (PRA) of Vancouver resulted in significant improvements to the project viability. The work involved detailed mineral processing studies aimed at achieving a marketable concentrate. An option for bio-oxidation and cyanidation to allow on-site dor6 production was also investigated.The main findings at PRA followed the front-end recovery of finely divided free gold (Au) by gravity concentration. Approximately 20% of Au reported to less than 0.2% of the mass, resulting in a grade exceeding 500g/t Au. The resulting gravity tailing provided a uniform feed for flotation evaluation. The optimization of this step allowed for a reasonable primary grind size of 80% passing (&) 50pm. Efficient slime’s rejection was made possible by flotation at a reduced pulp density, and pre-oxidized sulphides were reactivated with Na,S. The regrinding of the bulk flotation concentrate followed by up to five stages of cleaning resulted in a combined gravity + flotation product of 50g/t Au with 82% recovery in less than 4% of the feed mass.Further studies indicated that the flotation concentrate was amenable also to tank bio-oxidation. At 65% sulphide oxidation the gold recovery improved from less than 70% to 90% by cyanide extraction using CIL (carbon in leach). This compares to less than 45% gold recovery from whole-ore cyanidation in several previous studies. Heap leaching may also be considered for lower grade material. PRA’s methodical approach and consistent results dispelled the uncertainty about predicting the material behavior for the Harmony Property."

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

"Stillwater Mining Company recovers platinum and palladium from their Nye Montana operations. Mining first commenced at Nye in 1987 at a milling rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd). The plant was expanded in 1995 with the replacement of the ball mill and the addition of flotation capacity to increase mill throughput to 1820 t/d (2000 stpd). The applications for platinum and palladium have increased in recent years particularly in the automotive industry and the supply of the metals has remained fairly constant with prices for both platinum and palladium increasing and remaining very stable. In 1997 Stillwater initiated the expansion of their operations to increase production of platinum and palladium. Projects were initiated to expand production at the Nye operations, increase smelter and refining capacities at the Columbus facilities and to develop the extension of the orebody at the East Boulder site. This paper will discuss the changes at the Nye concentrator which were completed to increase production from 1820 t/d (2000 stpd) to 2730 t/d (3000 stpd) and eliminate some of the process bottlenecks.IntroductionStillwater Mining Company is mining the only significant primary source of PGMs outside of South Africa. The J-M Reef is an extensive mineralized zone containing PGMs that has been traced over a strike length of about 43 km (27 miles) in the southwest region of Montana. Stillwater controls the entire PGM mineralized zone.Johns-Manville geologists discovered palladium and platinum in the early 1970’s. In 1979, a Manville subsidiary entered into a partnership with Chevron, USA to develop the project. In 1 987, operations at the Stillwater property near Nye, Montana commenced."

The concentrator infrastructure cost CDN$64 million.Louvicourt mine is owned in partnership by Novicourt Inc. "In the flotation of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill, Inco Limited, CMC is used as both a floatable rock depressant and electrostatic serpentine slime dispersant. CMC, being a high molecular weight polymer, creates a serious handling problem in its introduction into the flotation processes. Typically, it is added as a 1-3% solution. This requires an enormous handling facility and makes its metallurgical gains uneconomical.Laboratory studies have shown that dry CMC addition as opposed to wet addition is feasible, as long as sufficient conditioning time is provided. Dry CMC addition into the grinding mill is also possible but its effectiveness is slightly reduced as compared to dry addition after grinding mills. Dry CMC addition using a vibratory feeder into the mill discharge is successfully applied in the treatment of ultramafic ores at Thompson mill.INTRODUCTIONManitoba Division MineralogyAt Inco’s Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson mill - primarily by froth flotation. The Thompson and Birchtree mines are both located within the Thompson Nickel belt. Sulphide mineralogy is relatively simple and includes both hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The significant difference between the two mines is the amount of ultramafic rock associations in the host material. Increasingly, more of the ultramafic associated ores from the Birchtree mine are being processed through the mill with a characteristic poor metallurgy."

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

"1.0 SummaryThe Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa had developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick’s exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick’s senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the first dore was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period Barrick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America.This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.2.0 The Develonment ProgrammeImmediately after the acquisition, Barrick began the process of gathering information required to prepare a project development plan. "The most common theory is that, since thyristors, diodes, and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are “solid state” they will live forever. This is not so. They have wear-out mechanisms (e.g. insulation) and other mechanical parts such as motor bearings. These wear-out phenomena can be easily calculated. In this paper we will look at some of the failures and the failure rate of thyristors in power converters to see what affects them and to see what improvements can be made. If converter failures do occur, some simple forensic engineering steps will show if this is the root cause of the problem.IntroductionLook at the general failure rate curve for thyristors, diodes, gate turn off devices (GTOs) and IGBTs shown in Figure 1. We see that there is an initial high failure rate due to manufacturing defects, application problems, and drive start-up stresses that lasts for a few weeks. This is followed by a long period of (hopefully) several years with a relatively low but very slowly rising failure rate. At the end of this period, the devices start to wear out and the failure rate suddenly starts to increase rapidly over a few months. This signals the end of life for the devices in the system. We will start by looking at this end of life area."

Key issues in managing information systems in the minerals industry will likely continue to be those relating to the integration and interoperability of disparate systems. This paper argues that, in order to harness the promised benefits of information technologies, the mining industry should adopt a set of open systems standards to define data formats and protocols for seamless data exchange. This is in direct contrast to the present situation where mining equipment, software and instrument suppliers rigidly adhere to proprietary standards for fear of losing competitive advantage. Benefits to the mining sector resulting from the adoption of such standards would be: the provision of near-time data for executive decision support, and the freedom to choose best technologies. The principal benefits to the leading mining software suppliers will be increased market share as a result of “captive sites” converting to open systems standards. Examples are given of open systems standards developed for related industries such as the Petroleum Open Systems Corporation (POSC) and the Machinery Information Management Open Systems Alliance (MIMOSA).

An in situ water sampling device has been developed to measure biologically-available or “labile” metals in natural waters and effluents. The active mechanism involves the use of a polyacrylamide gel layer to quantitatively control metal transfer to a trace-metal-adsorbing, gel-imbedded resin. Because the resin only adsorbs free metal ions (the gel sampler methodology is a kinetic speciation technique), and because metal bioavailability is related to the free-ion activity, the device provides a direct measure of the biological-availability of metals in the environment sampled. The prototype consists of a layer of ion-permeable polyacrylamide gel which separates the solution to be sampled from an ion exchange resin. Because approximately 90% of the polyacrylamide gel is water, mass transport through the gel is diffusion-controlled, and is therefore well defined. Metal ions are rapidly bound by the resin, creating a steep concentration gradient in the gel. The amount of labile trace metal that accumulates on the resin can be related directly to the concentration of the metal in solution, the exposure time and the molecular diffusion coefficient of the labile species. In addition, the passive nature of this device affords it the potential to address many of the limitations presented by conventional sampling methods, such as sample contamination introduced during collection or filtration and changes in trace metal speciation prior to analysis. Laboratory studies and limited field trials indicate that the sampler behaves as anticipated and illustrate that biologically- available metal concentrations in many environments are a small fraction of the total concentrations and often significantly less than the dissolved concentration. The implications of this on regulatory criteria are discussed. Additional field trials and correlation with bioassays are currently underway.

"Typical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5% to 20% ). Cornminition process costs, representing an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy (50 %) and linerkharge wear (50 %). Developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs. However, total media wear in a given ball mill grinding process is a product of three recognized wear mechanisms those being abrasion, corrosion and impact. Further, the contribution to total media wear of each of these wear mechanisms has not been well established. In this paper, a overview of abrasive, corrosive and impact wear mechanisms is made from which an empirical wear prediction procedure is proposed. Further, future directions in wear prediction research is outlined. "Advanced Flotation Technology is the application driven design of Don-Oliver flotation cells to achieve the optimum performance for each type and grind of flotation. Optimum performance is the combination of both recovery and selectivity.Optimized performance is the combined product of optimized mixing and effective froth removal. Optimized mixing is applied to roughers, scavengers, cleaners and specialty cells such as those to float hydrocyclone underflows in both primary and regrind circuits in order to reduce overgrinding. Effective mixing for fine material is easy, but overmixing reduces selectivity in frothbed.Selectivity in flotation is an important target, especially when treating complex ores, and parameters in frothbed have been examined to improve the separation of minerals and eliminate circumstances that reduce separation rate.Advances in process control have been achieved with expert controls and instructive operator information data. This has gained a higher degree of understanding of cell operation and ore type being processed to be used in future process development work. Excellent results of this Advanced Flotation Technology have been achieved and designs through 7000 cu ft (200 m3) are currently available for high capacity concentrators. This paper will detail how flotation cells are more responsive to the exact requirements of the duty specified."

The Internet is creating new distribution channels and offers new technology platforms with significant advantages over more traditional methods. Mines will have to re-evaluate both the strategies and the tactics employed in these areas. Mines will use e-commerce to integrate their maintenance, repair, and operating supply chains. The integration will extend beyond traditional trading partners to a worldwide network of communities with similar interests and goals. The changes will transform the way mines operate, lower mining costs, and thereby increase their chances of success in an increasingly competitive environment.

"Current trends of increased size, complexity, and automation of surface mining equipment necessitate more comprehensive and objective techniques for equipment comparison and selection. The field of reliability analysis provides tools to generate quantitative bases for maintenance and reliability aspects of such comparisons. Results from statistical analyses of failure and repair time data are used to perform the comparison. A case study is presented which analyzes five machines of two different technologies and three different designs.IntroductionThe surface mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in production equipment. The more obvious trend in this evolution is the steady introduction of even larger machines. Parallel, and complementary, to this increase in size is the introduction or adaptation of new technologies. Together, these two trends result in new surface mining equipment designs; these designs are often more complex and may feature technologies that have yet to be proven for the application or at the scale they are now fielded.The prospect of significant automation of open pit equipment is also bound to add complexity to future equipment designs. Semi-automated features, such as drilling controllers (Aquila, 2000), have already been commercialized. Fully autonomous haul trucks have been demonstrated in open pit mines (Jackson and Zoschke, 2000). Design concepts for comprehensive teleoperation of open pit operations have been formulated (Lipsett, 1998).With this rapid availability and deployment of new technology and equipment, managers and maintainers are faced with a multitude of decisions regarding what equipment to acquire and what maintenance strategies to implement. In light of this evolution in mining equipment, it is necessary to develop better methods for making equipment management decisions (Dessureault et al., 1999; Paraszczak, 1999). The incentive for development of such techniques is that a large portion of an open pit mine’s operating cost is maintenance related, as shown in Table 1."

Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

"In many mineral processing plants ore is reclaimed from a stockpile using multiple feeders. The discharge from these feeders is combined onto a single conveyor from which total tonnage is measured. Typically, operators set feeder output ratios to adjust the proportion of total tonnage drawn from each feeder. From a process control perspective, this system is not easy to control because the response time of each feeder depends on the distance from the feeder to the weightometer. This paper proposes a simple and elegant process control strategy to manage feeder ratio changes and the associated long and varying process dead-times. Changes in feeder speed are delayed and filtered to compensate for transport delays between feeders. The strategy was evaluated by simulation and installed on a mill feed system.ResumenEn numerosas plantas procesadoras de minerales, el mineral es extraido desde una pila de almacenamiento usando varios alimentadores. "In flotation circuits, direct measurement of the volumetric flow rate delivered by electromagnetic flowmeters is often difficult to obtain particularly due to piping and flow constraints. However, on-line material balance calculation could offer a reliable alternative to flow rate sensing. This paper describes an on-line material balance software package as applied to a copper flotation circuit for mass flow rate estimation mainly based on the output of an x-ray fluorescence onstream analyser. Rule-based procedures for the management of the main calculation modules are designed and integrated to a Comdale expert system. Attempts to diagnose the flotation process from mass flow rate data are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimisation has become more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decade. Therefore, new process variables need to be inferred or measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and chemical characteristics of the ore and due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures.A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network counting more than two dozens of slurry streams. The Beaverlodge uranium mining and milling facilities operated from 1952 to 1981 with about 94% of the ore extracted from the main underground mine and 6% from smaller satellite deposits. Decommissioning work occurred from 1982 to 1985 involving periods of shutdown, salvage and reclamation. Transition phase monitoring, leading to eventual delicencing commenced in July 1985. Over the last 15 years, discharge from the tailings management facility (TMF) and a fresh water stream, impacted during the operational phase by tailings spills, has improved in water quality for most parameters of concern. Loadings to the environment of three key contaminants (radium-226, total dissolved solids, and uranium) have consistently been less than during the operational phase with radium-226 having the greatest variability. Outstanding environmental issues associated with the recovering drainage system formerly used for tailings disposal, are being addressed in an enhanced environmental monitoring program to commence in 2000. Changes in water chemistry and the natural re-introduction of aquatic organisms are issues of concern. In the meantime, application for release from selected satellite areas commenced in 1999. This paper reviews the issues which have arisen during the transition phase, outlines how they have and are being addressed, and provides a comparison of original and current predictions of the recovery process under way at the former Beaverlodge mine site.

Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution.
