"It has been estimated conservatively that the costs of wear damage and friction in the Canadian mining and mineral processing industry amount to over one billion dollars per year. These are mainly incurred through the repair or replacement of worn parts and production losses from related equipment downtime. The selection and application of the most appropriate wear protection components and systems, can thus have a very significant influence on productivity, profitability and global competitiveness.Details are presented of the wide diversity of materials used to counteract the varied and often complex wear attack mechanisms that occur in surface mining. The majority are various forms of steels and irons with generally very high hardness. However, they also include relatively soft elastomers and polymeric products.The main characteristics and applications of the different classes are reviewed. Case studies record significant performance improvements achieved through more judicious selections. Finally, some new developments which reduce maintenance charges by substantially increasing wear component life, are described."

"The major importance of liners in grinding is their role in providing an appropriate trajectory for the charge. Since it is not possible to study the charge movement by direct observation in operating industrial mills, this task is accomplished by physical (laboratory), and/or, mathematical (software) methods. Because of the high cost and a longer time required for a physical analysis, mathematical simulations have become more common. Simulation of the effect of liner shape on the charge movement has provided a means to select a proper design based on the operational objectives and conditions. Furthermore, the liner shape changes due to wear and impact during operation, which will influence the charge trajectory. This adds more of an incentive to use simulation. These changes in liner could be predicted through liner profile measurements during operation and/or simulation. In this research, an inhouse developed DEM software called KMPCDEM © was used to simulate the charge movement in industrial plant SAG mills. A geometrical method of implementing the shell liners on SAG mills at the Sarcheshmeh (9.75×4.87 m) and the Gole-E-Ghohar (9×2.05 m) operations facilitated the software simulation. Point by point implementation of the measurements of liner profiles of these mills enabled the study to trend the change in the charge movement as the liners wear. Comparison of the simulation to a laboratory mill (1 m diameter) showed that the difference between the measured and predicted charge impact point, shoulder angle and toe angle were 6, 4 and 3°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the most energy intensive operation constituting the major portion of operating and capital costs of a mineral processing plant. In the last decade, a vast number of research was aimed at studying various aspects of grinding with the aim of performance improvements (Davis, 1919; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; kalala, Breetzke, & Moys, 2008). Mill liners transfer the input power to the charge and play a significant role in affecting the motion of the charge (Mclvor, 1983; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; Radziszewski, 1997; Van Nierop, Glover, Hinde, & Moys, 2001; kalala et al., 2008). Lifters are usually used with mill liners to extend their life and to enhance the grinding and impact breakage efficiency. Mill lifters are used to raise the grinding media and ore to transfer the energy from the mill to the load (Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010)."

As the first mine-to-metal zinc operation utilising atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, Skorpion Zinc faces unique challenges and opportunities. One of these challenges is found in the solvent extraction circuit, in which di-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is used as the organic extractant. Although D2EHPA is an excellent extractant for zinc, it suffers from the co-extraction of ferric iron, which is produced during leaching and by the corrosion of the grinding media. This situation is partially mitigated by iron precipitation in the neutralisation step prior to solvent extraction. Unfortunately, some ferric iron still reports to the solvent extraction process. This leads to a slow build up of iron in the organic phase. Chemical stripping is used to maintain the Fe concentration at an acceptable level. In this paper, the efficiency of the iron removal process is discussed.

Safe underground mine backfilling with hydraulic fill requires efficient fill drainage and stable fill retaining walls or bulkheads. If any or both the above two requirements are not satisfied, such a backfilling operation creates unsafe conditions and may lead to backfill retaining wall failures. Mine backfill retaining wall failures are always associated with economic losses, fatalities and interruption to mine production. Mining industry wants to either reduce or eliminate these fill retaining wall failures. The fill retaining wall failures could be effectively avoided through the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls and engineered drainage systems through the retaining walls. This paper presents the experience of the author in developing, implementing, and monitoring several hundred fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls at a mine in Australia with the highest safety standard. The details on the mine backfill drainage system and fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining wall designs are also presented.

"Abstract -The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China . The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture zone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum in stage 1 and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to zone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."

In 2004, Zinifex Budel Zink commenced testing with the objective to increase the precipitation of aluminium in the iron purification stage of its hydrometallurgical zinc circuit, without the use of expensive reagents. Findings from the literature applied to the leach circuit at Zinifex Budel Zink demonstrated that aluminium removal from the leach circuit could be increased by lowering the ferric concentration and acidity in the vessels where jarosite precipitation occurs. An associated increase in copper precipitation was mitigated by limiting the extent to which the ferric concentration was lowered in the vessels where jarosite forms and lowering the ratio of copper to aluminium in the solutions entering these vessels.

"This paper will cover recent developments in conveyor applications with specific reference to capacities, bell speeds and distances. It will also discuss certain unique arrangements of horizontal, curved and loop belt systems. In addition, the recent changes in safety factors resulting from new conveyor construction methods will be reviewed.IntroductionConveyor belt systems are currently undergoing dramatic changes. Their use is being extended to providing a viable means for the transportation of bulk material over longer and longer distances.In this paper, a brief account of the historical development' of the belt is outlined, demonstrating how conveyor technology has adapted to changing market demands.Today, energy and environmental requirements are providing what may even be greater challenges. The ability of the belt conveyor to transport material and meet those requirements, places it in the position of replacing many conventional means of bulk material transportation.The paper also outlines some of the progress which has been recently made in this regard and includes a broad approach to the subject of belt design and application.Recent design developments have greatly extended the potential of conveyor belt systems to include applications thought impossible just a few years ago.Graphically illustrating the potential of this new technology IS a belting system currently operating in New Caledonia. Built in 1970, the system has an incredible centre distance of 43,000 ft, or about eight miles.Not to be outdone, the British Coal Board is currently constructing a belt system with a centre distance of 49,000 ft and a speed of 1,650 feet-per-minute. This system is expected to be completed in 1986.These innovative advances contrast dramatically to the conveyor belt's beginnings in the early industrial revolution. Oliver Evans, writing in the 1795 edition of 'Miller's Guide' defined the conveyor belt as a ""broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas, revolving on two pulleys in a case or trough.""Obviously, the conveyor belt has come a long way since those early days."

Fluoride ions in zinc electrolyte cause corrosion to aluminum cathode plates at zinc electrowinning process, so we have developed an iron compound as a fluoride ion adsorbent used in zinc sulfate solution. The iron compound is synthesized from FeC13 solution with a small amount of sulfate ion by neutralizing reaction with Na2CO3 solution. The fluoride ions adsorbed on the surface of the iron compound are desorbed in alkaline solution and the iron compound can be reuse as a fluoride ion adsorbent. Moreover, if adsorption capacity of the iron compound decreases, it can be dissolved in HCl solution and re-synthesized.

"India is undergoing a massive electrification program using local coal to provide fuel for thermal generating plants. The Rajmahal mine in northern Bihar is scheduled to produce coal at the rate of 10 million tonnes per year by the end ofa sixty six month contract with MET-CHEM Canada Inc. for mine development. In order to control maintenance performance and warehouse inventory MET-CHEM is installing some proven computer-controlled programs and will provide extensive training to ensure that the systems are properly used. The programs are Maintenance Planning and Control System (MPCS) and Materials Management System (MMS), both of which were developed and used by Quebec Cartier Mining Company at its iron ore mine in northern Quebec. In addition, a Predictive Maintenance Program (PMP) using vibration analysis will be introduced . This paper discusses the three systems.IntroductionIndia is currently undergoing a massive countrywide industrialization and electrification program. Most of the power will be supplied by coal-fired thermal electric plants.One of the mines being developed as part of the over-all program is the Rajmahal Open Cast Coal project in the Godda District of Bihar, approximately 270 km north , and slightly west of Calcutta.The project is based on an agreement signed in January, 1989 between two government organizations - Canadian Commercial Corporation (Ccq and Coal India Limited (CIL). MET-CHEM Canada Inc. (MET-CHEM), an international consulting engineering organization which has worked in India since 1976, is CCCs Canadian executing agency for the project. METCHEM was the engineer-constructor and mining associate for the development of the 7.5 mtpy Kudremukh Iron Ore Project. This US$430 million project was completed on schedule and under the original budget estimate. The Rajmahal deposit is the responsibility of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), a subsidiary of CIL. The project is to produce coal at the rate of 10.5 million tonnes per year in 1994."

This paper describes the slope design case history for Fleming NO.3 mine and illustrates the application of modern techniques. The new design has resulted in significant financial savings due to a reduction in required waste stripping.

A thin layer of stratiform Ni-Zn-PGE sulfide mineralization of sedimentary-diagenetic origin was deposited during the Middle to Upper Devonian in the euxinic "Nick basin". The mineralized unit (=3 cm thick), which seems to have been developed over the entire sedimentary basin of > 80 km2, consists of pyrite, vaesite (NiSz), and sphalerite. The average grade of the mineralization is about 5.30/0 Ni, 0.73% Zn, =770 ppb (pGE+Au), and up to 61 ppm Re. Anomalous Se, As, Mo, P, Ba and U are present. A minimum of 0.90 x 106 tonnes of Ni were deposited in the basin (based on a bed thickness of 3 cm) during the Devonian. The unique metal association, extensive lateral distribution, persistent metal grade, mineralogical makeup, and stratigraphic control demonstrate that this is a new deposit type and a new geological environment for Ni and PGE + Au. The sulfide layer occurs at the base of a Phosphatic Chert Member which is underlain by a distinctive marker unit consisting of concretionary limestone structures. The limestone spheroids may represent a vent-specific carbonate facies developed adjacent to faults that emanated nutrientrich hydrothermal discharges just prior to the main mineralizing event. The suite of elements associated with the Nick mineralization suggests that the ore-forming metals were originally bound to organic matter derived from decaying marine organisms. Discharge of hot brines bearing organic matter-bound metals took place along numerous conduits within basin faults that are now manifest as bitumen veins. Our syndiagenetic model proposes that these fluids were discharged laterally from the conduits into the unconsolidated bottom sediment (ooze). The introduction of this metalliferous fluid, rich in organic matter, stimulated biological activity and bacterial reduction of its contained 804 to sulfide. Hot, dense, laterally migrating hydrothermal fluid precipitated thin sulfide-rich larninae within bottom sediment. Published thermodynamic studies suggest that the diagnostic vaesitepyrite assemblage crystallized at approximately 138°C. The 034S values range from -14.7 0/00 to -10.00/00 and are up to 340/00 lighter than locally surrounding sulfides and age-equivalent mineralized strata elsewhere in the Selwyn Basin. The Ol3C values of calcite in the footwall of the mineralized unit (- 12 0/00 to -6 0/00) are isotopically much lighter than regional values. The lighter isotopic character is attributed to the hydrothermal discharge of fluids enriched in organic compounds. Although geochemical profiles of the lower Earn Group sediments that host the Nick mineralization reveal that these black shales are not distinctive, the unusual Ni, Zn, PGE, U, Ba, and P elemental associations and their anomalous concentrations in stream sediments can be used to explore for this deposit type.

"The Cordilleran tin belt extends from the Seward Peninsula in westernmost Alaska to Mexico. Throughout the Canadian section, tin occurrences are mainly confined to a belt along the northeastern fringe of the Western Cordilleran sub-region; the boundary of this sub-region with the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region is most simply defined as the practical eastern limit of granitic and metamorphic rocks. The stratified rocks underlying this restricted belt are mainly late Precambrian and early Paleozoic miogeosynclinal sedimentary rocks, which are more or less metamorphosed but otherwise are generally equivalent to the less severely deformed rocks underlying the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region. They contrast with Late Paleozoic - Mesozoic eugeosynclinal volcanic-sedimentary assemblages farther west, but the granitic intrusions throughout are mainly of Late Mesozoic age. Thus, narrowly defined, the tin belt largely coincides with a lead-zinc-silver metallogenic province, whereas copper deposits characterize the eugeosynclinal regions to the west. In addition to the tin occurrences, which include the Sullivan lead-zinc-silver mine, Canada's only significant producer, the belt contains all the beryllium, most of the tungsten and many Iithophile-type molybdenum occurrences. Several types of occurrences of each metal are represented. Lithium occurrences in the Canadian Cordillera are notably rare, and these few are insignificant."

THE world's largest known oil deposit lies in northern Alberta. In fact, according to government estimates, the famous so-called 'tar sands' of the Athabaska region contain several times as much oil as all the other proved reserves of the world. S. C. Ells, of the Department of Mines and Resources, who has been the Dominion Government's authority on the oil sands since 1913, has estimated the minimum content of the deposits at 100 billion barrels(!). C. P. Bowie, of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, has published an estimate of 250 billion barrels(2). ?In comparison, the latest authoritative estimate of the proved oil-field reserves of the world is less than 35 billion barrels(3). Out of this tremendous total, perhaps 500 million barrels are commercially available at present-day costs and prices; the remainder must be considered a latent reserve to be used when development costs are materially lower and petroleum prices materially higher than they now are. Mean-while, the 500-million-barrel portion presently available contains more oil than has been found in all the rest of Canada, and constitutes one of Canada's great mineral resources. Although these deposits have been known to white men since 1788, when Peter Pond, the explorer, found the Indians stewing the oil out of the sand and mixing it with spruce pitch to caulk their canoes, they are only now coming into commercial production. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the deposits, their oil content, their present development, and the possibilities that seem to lie immediately ahead. For the sake of completeness and clarity, the writer has not hesitated to use or to paraphrase material that he has previously published elsewhere in discussing various aspects of the oil sands.

Introduction Previous to 1924 the mining fields of Manitoba and adjoining territory had not been prospected in detail, and the reports of the exploration of the mineral discoveries to that date had been discouraging. As a result of the apparent failure of all the mining operations, some considered that geological conditions in the country westward from lake Superior extending across western Ontario, eastern and northern Manitoba, and northern Saskatchewan, were different from those in the northeastern part of Ontario, where large gold mines had been developed. Discoveries of importance thus were necessary to renew interest in the mining possibilities of this part of the Canadian Shield, and the successful operations at Flin Flon and Howey in large part were responsible for the beginning of the present activity in what may be described as the part of the pre-Cambrian Shield within central Canada. In Manitoba, the more important developments at present are in the Central Manitoba, Gods Lake, and Knee Lake fields. The large area from west of Flin Flon east to Herb Lake, also, is being explored carefully for gold deposits of merit. A number of properties in Red Lake, Woman Lake, and Pickle Crow areas are being drilled and explored underground. Many of the mines of the Lake of the Woods area, that were producing gold 30 years ago, are re-opened, and new prospects in this field and in the country to the east are being explored. The recent development of Little Long Lac mine in an area near the railway, and considered by some to have been thoroughly prospected years ago, has stimulated interest in the areas formerly prospected. In the autumn of 1934, the belts of greenstone and sediments in the country east of lake Nipigon were staked, and deposits in these fields will be explored in detail this year. This paper is presented to discuss the general features of the geology and gold deposits of the various prospecting fields in Manitoba and adjoining territory. Details of a number of the areas and mines will be presented at this meeting in papers by Barton on Little Long Lac, Tanton on Sturgeon River, Baker on Gods Lake, and Brownell and Kinkel on Flin Flon. Although mining was not active in most of this territory previous to 1930, geologists of the various government departments continued field studies and interesting reports were issued.

"The Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik region has been in operation since 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,200,000 tonnes per year due to an Optimization Project (FAG to SAG conversion) in 2005 and many recent processimprovements.In 2006, the Raglan Metallurgical Group with assistance from the Xstrata Process Support group decided to make SAG control one of its priorities in order to further increase throughput and improve stability. The original primary mill control logic delivered by the Optimisation Project in 2005 consisted of a simple PID loop controlling the mill charge (bearing pressure) through feed rate changes. Due to the multivariable, non-linear and disturbance dominated nature of the SAG circuit it was quickly found that this traditional PID control strategy was not able to adequately control the mill; resulting in poor stability, frequent operator interventions and less than optimum performance.This paper describes the successful integration of advanced field systems such as mill feed image analysis (Wipfrag) and crusher gap controller (ASRi), into a multi-variable fuzzy logic SAG mill controller. The process of how a strategy for control was developed and implemented directly in the existing control system (exploiting standard system capabilities) is discussed. It is also shown how this approach has provided mill automation which is simple, robust (despite erratic feed characteristics), and delivers both an increase in throughput and a reduction of variability.INTRODUCTIONOriginally commissioned as a Fully Autogenous Grinding (FAG) circuit in 1997, preparations to convert the Katinniq Concentrator Mill to SAG had in fact commenced as early as 1999, but were halted owing to alternative process improvements which achieved up to 1Mtpa as early as 2000. "Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate process plants requiring high throughputs presents unique metallurgical environmental and sustainability challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life-of-mine.Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy and high ore variability, water scarcity and quality issues, high energy costs, complex environmental issues including tailings management, high capital and operating costs, worldwide constraints on resource availability, complicated regulations in emerging economies, changing demographics of mining operations with ever-changing cultural or community issues and the urgent need for a better assessment of project viability to reflect the dynamics of present mining scenario. Developing breakthrough solutions to these problems is the key to success of any new project and maintaining profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial along with the need for a more lateral thinking, strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. This paper presents some of the key findings based on experiences from a large number of challenging projects and operations focused on solving complex metallurgical problems.IntroductionThere is a plethora of challenges in developing new ore bodies. The metallurgical complexity of these deposits has increased significantly due to the need for mining lower grade ores along with the presence of deleterious elements that have environmental and processing implications. In addition, many of the mining projects are capital intensive due to high throughput requirements to be economical along with the need for building infrastructure due to remote locations, while operating costs steadily increase due to high reagent, energy and labour costs, increased state royalties and community obligations, to name a few of the key factors. There is also scarcity of water in many regions requiring the use of sea water or brackish water, which has both environmental and metallurgical implications. The shortage of qualified technical manpower adds significantly to the woes of many mining companies. Considering these multiplicity of challenges, it has become imperative for many mining companies to be innovative in addressing these issues."

"A full-scale demonstration unit of Tampella's LIFAC desulphurization process was tested at SaskPower's Poplar River Power Station Unit No. I. The test program included a series of parametric tests, followed by a 1500 hour operational evaluation. This paper summarizes the results of the test program, and SaskPower's economic evaluation which led to selection of the LlFAC process for SaskPower's 300 MW Shand power station. IntroductionOne of the major influences on the coal mining industry today is public and legislative response to acid rain. When sulphur-bearing fuels such as coal are burned, the sulphur oxidizes to sulphur dioxid e (S00 which, if uncontrolled, enters the atmosphere as one of the by-products of combustion. S02 then combines with water in the air to form an acid and acid rain results. Combustion also produces nitrogen oxides (N0J which can combine with water in the air forming nitrogen based acid , also contributing to acid rain.Acid rain has become a significant international concern. Newspapers have reported on dying forests, dead lakes and crumbling statues. Papers also include articles professing that the physical results of acid rain are vastly overstated.
