"Minnova Inc. has five operating divisions thoughout Canada. One of them is Lac Dufault which was established in 1964.Lac Dufault is located 15 km north of Rouyn-Noranda, in what is known as Noranda volcanic centre, in northwestern Quebec. For more than 25 years, Lac Dufault has produced copper, zinc, gold and silver from four different mines: Norbec, Millenbach, Corbet and now Ansil.Ansil, officially in production since July 1989, is one of the deepest mines presently in production in Quebec. This high-grade copper, gold, zinc and silver orebody is being mined at a rate of 1200 tonnes per day with a total workforce of 200 employees.Of particular interest are the high mechanization level of the underground mine, technical innovations also underground, and computer applications throughout the division.IntroductionMinnova Inc. was formerly known as Corporation Falconbridge Copper until 50% of its shares were bought by Kerr Addison Mines Ltd . in 1986 and it became a member of Noranda Group of Companies.Minnova stands for mining innovation. It means Minnovaaims to use state-of-the-art technologies in mining and exploration to achieve maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness. It also means that they aim to use both proven and innovative management principles to the optimum benefit of their employees and shareholders. Minnova has operations across Canada. Presently four mining divisions produce copper, zinc, gold, silver and lead. Two are situated in Quebec: Lac Dufault (established in 1964) and Lac Shortt (established in 1985); one in Ontario; Winston Lake (established in 1988); and one in British Columbia; Samatosum (established in 1989).Minnova has an annual exploration budget of $15 million divided 60/40 between base metals and precious metals. Most of Minnova's exploration efforts are concentrated around their existing mines. "In 1989 and 1990 abnormally high levels of arsenic in ore from the Thompson Open Pit Mine threatened Manitoba Division's electro-nickel production. The paper will discuss our development of a flotation process to separate pentlandite and gersdorffite (the prime nickel and arsenic bearing minerals).The presentation will focus on the development of the process from conception, through lab and plant test work, to plant optimization and full scale production. The paper will conclude with the benefits and cost of the completed project.INTRODUCTIONRejection of arsenic from nickel sulphide ores was not a primary concern in the Manitoba Division until 1989. At that time increased production in the Thompson Open Pit mine, which contains high arsenic ore zones, resulted in excess amounts of arsenic in the Thompson Refinery affecting electro-nickel quality. This problem was resolved through extensive efforts by Mill personnel. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize the reader with- the Thompson Mill.- the mineralogy of the Thompson orebody.- the evolution of Ni/As separation in the Mill.- the metallurgical impacts of the separation on the Mill.- the importance of the separation to the Manitoba Division."

"The McLaughlin Mine owned by Homestake Mining Company is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco in California's coastal range. The mine began operations in February of 1985. The mill currently processes 3,000 short-ton per day of sulfide ore that has an average grade of 0.15 ounces of gold per ton, plus another 3,000 tons per day in a newly completed oxide circuit. Annual production from the mine totals over 200,000 ounces.The sulfide ore extraction process involves three basic steps, grinding, oxidation of sulfide minerals in an autoclave, and cyanide leaching for recovery of gold in a carbon-in-pulp circuit. This process, which incorporates a new technology where oxidation of sulfide minerals is conducted prior to cyanide leaching to facilitate gold recovery, was successful from start-up. However, limitation in the grinding mills initially limited sulfide tonnage throughput.This paper discusses modifications made in the grinding circuit, both mechanical and operational, to resolve it deficiency. The SAG mill, in particular, was unable to achieve design tonnage initially and proved to be most troublesome. Complications occurred due to the hardness and variability of ore being processed, short component life, and a lifter /liner arrangement that had to be tailored to the particular circumstances at McLaughlin. IntroductionHomestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Mill, located in northern California, was designed to process a refractory gold ore at a rate of 3,000 tpd to render the ore amenable to cyanidation. Seven years transpired between discovery of the near-surface ore body in 1978 and the February, 1985 plant start-up. Development of the McLaughlin mill and open pit gold mine hinged on the use of autoclave technology to achieve design recoveries."

"Inco's Matte Separation Plant is a unique mineral processing facility having no process tailings stream. Each product is a high-grade concentrate with strict assay specifications which are defined by the downstream refining route. The most recent column application in the flowsheet, copper scavenging in the production of a high quality nickel concentrate, is described in detail. Testwork in pilot-scale columns (0.038 m, 0.051 m and 0.10 m in diameter) was used to develop a model of the copper scavenging system. This data was then used to simulate the performance of plant-scale equipment. The relationships thus established were confirmed by a series of plant tests in a 1.8 m diameter column. Column results consistently exceeded conventional cell performance. The modelling was extended to assess full plant production requirements and, as a result, a 2.1 m diameter column was specified for this application. Engineering design for this column is currently underway and the column is scheduled to be commissioned later in 1991.INTRODUCTIONMatte SeparationINCO's Matte Separation Plant is a part of the Copper Cliff Smelter complex near Sudbury Ontario. The flowsheet and the development of column flotation within it have been described previously (Feeley et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1989). The plant feed is a synthetic Bessemer Matte from the Nickel smelter. This matte is slow cooled to promote grain growth and typically assays 46-52% Ni, 23-27% Cu. These elements are present primarily in sulphide form (Ni3S2 and Cu2S respectively) with some metallic alloy also precipitating from the sulphur deficient matte. Minor amounts of iron, precious metals, and nuisance elements are also present.The matte separation process is, in concept, relatively simple. Following magnetic removal of the metallic alloy from the feed, the flowsheet is designed to float a high grade copper concentrate from the nickel sulphide matrix. A simplified flowsheet of the process is shown in figure 1."

"IntroductionIn respect to The Human Dimension by M. Phyllis Bray, this author's impression is that research on long distance commuting (LDC) is long overdue. This type of mining is not new to many workers, especially those from areas such as the Maritimes, who have had to look for work away from their families for at least a decade. Perhaps to the industry the over-all set-up is new, but to workers who have faced mine shut-downs in their areas finding a job was the main objective and if the security of long-term employment was evident, then the families might join them later. This was the situation with which the writer' s family was faced.LDC LifestyleBeing the wife of an underground miner, the author has personally experienced this lifestyle for almost 10 years, and has never experienced accommodation in a company town. The first five years of marriage were spent in a small rural municipality within 50 miles of the worksite, but the town had industry separate from mining and was not affected by the mine shut-down.Since her LDC lifestyle began her family has been pretty much city-based, out-of-province commuters with two children and a third to arrive some years later. She therefore lived a fairly normal married life with a husband home daily. The author has experienced life with a husband who worked away for five-day stretches and then drove long distances to be home weekends or the portion of time left over from driving and fatigue. She has done the 3D-days in/l4-days out routine, and for approximately the past four years has been existing on a two-weeks in/two-weeks out ritual .The author does not agree that the ""bottom line is that mining families go where the jobs are"" . The miners go where the jobs are and the families fend for themselves with the assistance of the pay cheque making it home each pay period.Perhaps because there are many personal frustrations with this type of lifestyle, perceptions may be inaccurate. Having only dealt with underground operations, there may be gross differences between the pressures and demands of other forms of mining."

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. "This paper concentrates on the four recent plant trials/ applications of froth washing. Results showed that improved metallurgical performance can be achieved with wash water. Increased froth cleaning yielded better upgrading, and some cases slightly improved recovery. Froth sampling and salt tracer tests supported the findings of froth washing tests.At Falconbridge, Ni grade increased from l.47% to 2.15% and recovery from 85% to 87%. At Eastmaque, final Au grade increased from 2.3 to 2.7 oz/st at a slightly higher recovery. At Les Mines Selbaie, Cu grade increased from 24.5% to 25.S% and Zn grade from 54.5% to 56.l%. At Zinc Corp. of America, average Zn grade increased from 55% to 56. 8% at the same recovery for a 45-day period. A number of plants in Canada and the United States have evaluated and/or now practicing froth washing. Wash water has now proved itself in some plants over several months of operation.INTRODUCTIONFroth washing in mechanical flotation cells offers a number of metallurgical (i. e. increased grades and/or recoveries) and economical (i.e. decreased transportation and smelting & refining costs) benefits. Fundamental development work in laboratory and pilot scales performed at McGill yielded encouraging results. (Kaya and Laplante, 1988a and 1989a). Since laboratory and pilot flotation performance can differ from full-scale due to differences in hydrodynamics, kinetics, and froth characteristics (e.g. stability, loading etc.), plant trials were essential to prove the viability of this technology."

"The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

"Since potash was discovered substantial rock mechanics research has been done to develop the technology needed to cope with the unique conditions in Saskatchewan mines, to assure general mine safety and to assess the problems associated with mining potash at depth.The practical result of this research was the development of multiple entry systems incorporating yielding pillars for access ways and the chevron type layouts for production panels. These developments proved the viability of extracting potash from between 950 m and 1100 m depth using a high degree of mechanization. High extraction ratios could not, however, be achieved using the developed technology.The presence of a competent salt back is critical to mining the potash, and underground practice is governed by the presence of anomalous geological zones. These factors may be associated with the occurrence of brine inflows. One potash mine in Saskatchewan ceased its underground operations and was closed due to flooding of the entire mine. Two other potash mines in Saskatchewan had significant brine inflows. The costs involved in brine pumping, equipment relocation, bulkhead construction, grouting, and in auxiliary operations can run into the tens of millions of dollars.At Central Canada Potash, the use of stress relief and yielding pillars in the design of the mining layouts has resulted in over-all stable underground excavations and safe mining practices. There are two types of production room s, the chevron and the hybrid, which result in a planned block average extraction ratio of 35010. Mining activity has resulted in brine ingresses in two areas, and additional operating costs have been incurred over the years. These mining areas have demonstrated abnormally high closure rates, and rapid back deterioration. A program was established in those two areas to ensure the practice of safe mining procedures.The short-term perspectives inherent in the program included the elimination of all uncertainties associated with the possibility of an increase in brine inflow leading to flooding, the elimination of the abnormal ground behaviour and ground deterioration in the inflow areas, and the reduction of the long-term adverse effects of mining on regional mine stability. The program was also designed to provide means for developing alternative safe mine layouts which would improve the exploitation of potash resources. Details of the extensive work performed during the program are found elsewhere (E. De Souza, 1988).Grouting and salt backfilling are viable techniques to control brine inflows in underground excavations in potash mines. Detailed instrumentation of the backfilled test areas provides information on the long-term behaviour and effectiveness of the grout/backfill system, allowing for rational decisions on the complete abandonment of these mined out areas, thus resulting in considerable operational cost savings.This paper is presented in two parts: the first addressed the problems of diamond drilling , grouting and backfilling in Panel 209 and the second, addresses the problems of instrumentation and rock mechanics."

"L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

"The purpose of this paper is to identify a number of currently available opportunities for exploration and/or mine development in the industrial minerals field in southeastern Ontario. The paper is not intended as a complete review of the industrial minerals industry in southeastern Ontario, but highlights what are seen by the authors as areas where there are immediate opportunities for investment and growth.Traditional exploration targets in the Grenville Supergroup in southeastern Ontario have been vein-hosted gold deposits, industrial minerals, and base metals. In recent years, emphasis has increasingly shifted to industrial minerals, in response to changing technologies in the minerals-consuming manufacturing industries, and to an increasing awareness of the industrial mineral potential in this area.This paper examines the resurgence of interest in exploring for and developing a wide variety of industrial minerals, and it examines the work the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has done under the current Canada-Ontario Mineral Development Agreement. Specific development opportunities are identified in various commodity areas. Use oj the industrial minerals wollastonite and nepheline as substitutes for fluorspar in the formulation of synthetic steelmaking slags is also discussed."

"Several types of stratiform and epigenetic gold deposits have been found in New Brunswick, It is the purpose of this paper to describe and classify the epigenetic deposits and demonstrate their relationship to tectonic evolution. The stratiform deposits are mostly volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits that are described elsewhere (Davies et al., 1985).The auriferous epigenetic deposits include quartz-carbonate veins and stockworks, polymetallic veins, contact metasomatic, porphyry copper and volcanic breccia (epithermal) deposits. These epigenetic deposits are concentrated in major fault zones that define or are close to the boundaries of tectonostratigraphic terranes or terranes and cover sequences. The host rocks of the deposits were subjected to extensive crustal thickening resulting from thrusting and/or high angle reverse faulting.The gold deposits north of the Avalon Terrane occur indilatent structures related to mainly dextral wrench faulting that postdated the episode of crustal thickening. The deposits along the southern margin of the Avalon Terrane occur in structures related to late phase thrusting."

"The Johnny Mountain gold mine in northern British Columbia, owned by skyline Gold Corporation, has been in operation since August 1988. Mill operating difficulties at the start of the operation resulted in a depleted cash flow situation and quick improvements were required to generate a self-sustaining financial basis of operation. In October 1988, Melis Engineering Ltd. was contracted to identify metallurgical difficulties, implement necessary modifications, and undertake mill operations and personnel training in order to achieve production targets.This paper presents the operating difficulties which existed at start-up and describes the methodology used to overcome production problems. Metallurgical testing results are described along with the modifications made to the milling circuit to suit ore metallurgy. Plant changes led to the operation of a simple gravity/flotation circuit to recover gold as bullion and in a copper concentrate. Operation of the originally installed cyanidation circuit was discontinued. This contributed to substantial savings in operating costs and virtually eliminated environmental problems. PROPERRTY LOCATION ANR DESCRIPTIONThe Johnny Mountain mine site is located in northern British Columbia along the Iskuit River about 60 km east of Wrangell, Alaska and 275 km north of Terrace, B. C.. A location map is presented in Figure 1 and a site plan is shown in Figure 2. The complex is located on a mountain plateau about 3, 600 feet above sea level. The plateau is flanked to the north by Johnny Mountain and surrounded on the other sides by steep cliffs."

"How well supervisors supervise, and are supervised determines whether management's goals will be reached and ...how effective the work force will be... Upper management must recognize the potential returns of viable training programs for both management and mine workers… The key to performance, from the standpoint of safety and productivity, is the ability of the line supervisor to manage(1).In this article, the authors will share their experiences in supervisor selection and development. They also draw on the work of two men in particular, Douglas Bray and William Byham, both of whom have contributed significantly to the understanding of supervisory development and training.IntroductionYears ago, there was not much training for supervisors. They worked under an authoritarian style of management and modelled themselves on it. They were generally selected for their skill as miners, mill operators or mechanics. Things have changed. Today, companies have different needs. The selection of supervisors is far too important to rely on guesswork. Progressive companies want supervisors who think like managers - supervisors who know how to plan and organize, set performance standards and monitor them, analyze problems, develop solutions, show sound judgment and deal effectively with people. The evaluation of these supervisory ""dimensions"" is best accomplished through the use of an assessment centre. The Assessment Centre Method increases the accuracy of predicting the future success of candidates being considered for promotion.Mining and other resource companies use assessment centres to select the most suitable people for supervision. The Assessment Centre Method is based on extensive research. It eliminates hit-and-miss selection methods by using several different exercises that simulate the problems and activities that candidates would face if they were promoted into supervision . In other words, they get a realistic "" sample"" of the supervisor's job and are required to deal with and manage interpersonal and problematic circumstances."

"The Bralorne-Pioneer deposit produced more gold than any other deposit in British Columbia over its 70 years of operation (130 kg or 4 million oz of Au, from 7 million tonnes of 18 glt ore). Mineralization is related to a suite of late Cretaceous albitite dykes of 85 to 90 Ma age. It thus occurred long after and is genetically unrelated to the Early Permian (275 Ma) Bralorne diorite and soda granite.The major veins strike about 110 degrees and dip north at 70 degrees, with slickensides plunging 45 degrees east that indicate last movement was reverse. Major ore shoots in the veins occupy somewhat less than 20% of the vein and plunge steeply west, roughly perpendicular to the slickensides. The structures that contain the veins probably formed at around 95 to 90 Ma during a strike-slip episode with easterly directed maximum compression.Disseminated pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor chalcopyrite occur within envelopes up to several metres from the veins. Arsenopyrite is confined to vein selvages. Local sphalerite and galena appear to correlate with gold-rich portions of the veins. Traces of tetrahedrite and stibnite have been observed but tellurides have not. Gold is found principally as thin smeared flakes of the native metal in the black sulphidic septae of the strongly ribboned veins. Hydrothermal alteration envelopes around the veins grade outwards from intensely foliated quartz - ankerite - sercite (±fuchsite) to less sheared calcite - chlorite - albite to unsheared epidote -calcite.Open-space vein filling textures found in the deep (mesothermal) environment at Bralorne can be explained by a fault- valve model. High-angle reverse faults may have acted as fluid-pressure activated valves on geopressured reservoirs, causing large cyclic fluctuations in fluid pressure that promoted mineral deposition in an episodic fashion . The faults that were mineralized were reactivated sub-vertical former strike slip faults, oriented at a high angle to the northeast-directed stress in a compressive regime."

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. "The Samatosum Project is a base and precious metal deposit located in south central British Columbia. A dilute ore reserve of 766, 682 tonnes grading an average 1.1% copper, 3.0% zinc, 1.4% lead, 833 gram per tonne silver and 1.6 gram per tonne gold is available. The base metals occur as tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Virtually all of the silver and gold are associated with the tetrahedrite.The mill is operated at a rate of 21 tonnes per hour. Sulphur dioxide is used as a zinc depressant in the grinding circuit. Production of a Cu/Pb/Ag concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. This concentrate is then separated into Cu-Ag and Pb concentrates through a reverse flotation circuit utilizing sulphur dioxide, starch and sulphuric acid as lead depressants.The tailings from the Cu/Pb/Ag circuit are treated with copper sulphate to activate the zinc. Production of a zinc concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. Dewatering of the concentrates to 6% moisture is done with a LAROX filter press.Tailings effluent is treated with lime and sodium sulphide to precipitate out the heavy metals. The resulting sludge is treated in OYNASAND sand filtration units to produce a quality effluent."

"The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

"Selbaie is located northwest of Joutel, in what is known as the fourth east-west volcanic sediment group in northwestern Quebec. The main metals produced are copper and zinc, with important contents of both silver and gold. Production comes from an open pit mine on the A-I zone and from two underground mines on the B zone and the A-2 zone. Each mine gave rise to important capital investment programs for construction and mine development, all of which were managed and staffed with company-hired, non-union personnel. Production from all sources now exceeds 7000 tonnes per day, with a workforce of540 regular employees. Of particular interest technically is the high recovery of B zone reserves underneath 40 m of overburden cover, the low-cost capital development of the A-2 zone, the computerized control of open pit mining, and the successful copper-zinc separation of the A-1 zone ore. Due to the low grades of the mineral deposits, efficiency in all aspects of the production process, is essential to the success of the operation.LocationThe Selbaie Mine is located 82 km northwest of the locality of Joutel in northwestern Quebec (Fig. 1). Access to the mine is by an all-weather road, 32 km of which is paved. A second road access to the site is via La Sarre, 134km to the southwest. Employee access, materials transport and haulage of copper and zinc concentrates take place over both of these roads."
