Rock formation at shallow depths is generally associated with complex geology consisting of many joints, fractures, bedding planes, etc. Fragmentation results from primary blasts in such strata are therefore significantly influenced by structural discontinuities. To evaluate the role of discontinuities, which is of great use in the design of blasts in such conditions, a two-stage investigation program was taken up. In the first stage, model scale tests were conducted with single and double holes with the strike of discontinuities parallel and perpendicular to the face. Later, field studies were conducted in a limestone mine and a coal mine. Blast patterns were modified based on the results obtained from model scale blasts. Secondary blasting was taken as a measure to assess blast performance in the field, whereas mean fragment size, fine and coarse fragmentation indices were considered as fragmentation measures in model scale tests. Model tests indicated confinement of explosive energy by the discontinuities surrounding blasthole. Crater shape and size were significantly influenced by the orientation of joints with respect to the face. Modified blast designs with decreased burden x spacing patterns resulted in improved fragmentation in the field. A reduction of about 12 per cent in explosive consumption was recorded with modified blast designs. Boulder formation was observed to decrease by about 79 per cent as well.

The Amanda Bel Goldfield (new name) is an area of approximately 1000 sq. km centred 65km WSW of Ingham and 150km due east of Kidston (Camel Creek homestead to Ryeburn homestead area). Gold mineralisation has been located in tightly folded sediments of the Silurian Greenvale Formation as well as in the Early Devonian Kangaroo Hills Formation and the Early Carboniferous Clarke River Formation. The area is traversed by a major NW-SE structural corridor, with many of the numerous basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic dykes of the region sharing a similar trend. So far fourteen gold-bearing zones have been located, all of which are new discoveries delineated by bulk cyanide leach sampling and subsequent geological reconnaissance. The region has undergone three periods of deformation with gold mineralisation introduced syn-D1, post D1 - pre D , syn-D and post-D2/D , thereby revealing an involved metall~genic history. Mineralisation types include Sb, Sb-Au, Sb-Au-As, Sb-Au-As (-Pb-Zn) and Au-As. Minor occurrences of W, Pb-Zn-Ag and Pb-Zn-Ag-As-Sn are also present as are alluvial (deep lead) tin Drosoects.

High solids brown coal slurries have been prepared with concentrations approaching those achieved with bituminous black coals. The high inherent water content and macroporosity of Victorian brown coals have been reduced in a controlled manner by chemical and mechanical means. The hydrophobicity of the coal surface has been increased sufficiently to reduce the tendency for swelling and water uptake. This together with densification has allowed the solids content to be progressively improved from 25% solids with raw coal to 65% solids with modified coals. Both raw brown coal and modified brown coal suspensions show shear thinning behaviour resulting in lower viscosities at higher flow rates. All coal suspensions displayed a yield stress once sufficient solids concentration was achieved. This yield stress can be used in the prevention of solids settling. Under simple shear mixing the network structure that provides the yield stress quickly breaks down to a low viscosity fluid with reduced yield stress and a pumpable consistency. The time necessary for structural recovery is in the order of days permitting shut-down and start-up of fuel delivery systems.

A paper presenting an overview of legislative and best practice approaches to the management of OHS&E and business risk for Australian tunnelling operations. Best practice can be achieved in Australian tunnelling through ærisk awarenessÆ by decision-makers and line personnel. This will identify problems before they occur and lead to implementing controls appropriate to avoiding loss throughout the life cycle of the underground opening. The author draws on legislative approaches from all Australian states together with practical experience from risk management and risk engineering work from six recent tunnelling projects. This describes a process that:commences with concept risk assessment,involves quantification of major hazards,conducts assessments of operating risks, andleads to implementation of an integrated management system that keeps construction activities connected with the controls identified in the design and planning phases and minimises the losses sustained as a result. The silver-lead ores of Yerranderie occur in a series of narrow, flat-dipping lodes in small bodies of quartz porphyry, intrusive into Upper Devonian volcanics, which are exposed in the western flank of the Permo-Triassic Basin of central New South Wales, about 80 miles south-west of Sydney (Harper, 1930; Lawrence, 1953). The lodes strike about E.-W. and are from 1,200ft. to 2,000ft. long. They consist of a series of ore shoots from 3ft. to 100ft. long, and up to 5ft. thick, though commonly under 2ft. thick, interspaced with low grade sections. They dip at from 18°S. to 400 S., and have persisted down the dip for 1,450ft. (693ft. vertical depth) in the Wollondilly mine, for 1,120ft. in the Bartlett's mine, and for 850ft. in the Wonga mine.The grade of ore in the Bartlett's mine was from 32% to 40% lead, from 100 oz. to 130 oz. silver per ton, 0.5 to 4.0% arsenic, with ore ,as rich as 20% arsenic on the No. 6 and No. 7 levels of the Silver Peak mine, the underlay extension of the Bartlett's lode, about 1% copper, and up to 4 dwt. gold per ton. In the Wollondilly mine the average grade was 15% lead, with sections as rich" as 36% lead, from 75 to 165 oz. silver per ton, 0.6 to 3.3% arsenic, 0.2 to 0.7% antimony, 0.8% copper, and up to 7...5. Cl~t. gold per ton. The zinc content of the ores is slight, and has not been recorded.Mining began about 1898, and to date more than 110,000 tons of ore, valued at £1,800,000, has been raised. Large scale mining ceased about 1935. The chief mines operating were the Bartlett's mine (formerly Colon Peak), the Silver Peaks, which is the underlay extension of the Bartlett's, the Wollondilly (or Yerranderie) mine, and the Wonga' (or Tonalli) mine.

The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. The mining and minerals industry has had and will undoubtedly continue to have a considerable impact on the development of this State. For the first 60 years of its history the colony of Western Australia made slow progress; its population in 1889 being only 43,000. However, as a-result of discovering gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie the Eastern Goldfields alone had a population of 25,000 by 1897. The income generated by the gold mining industry allowed the Premier of the day, Sir John Forrest, and his Government to support the proposal put forward by the State's Engineer in Chief, C.Y. O'Connor, to construct a pipeline to carry water from the Darling Ranges to Kalgoorlie ; a distance of 600 kilometres. The demand for people knowledgeable in the science and art of mineral exploitation also prompted the State Government to establish a School of Mines in the Goldfields in 1902, where it has remained ever since. The gold mines of this region have been a major source of employment for over 70 years and there is no doubt of the fact that their continued prosperity minimised the effect of the world recession on Western Australia in the 1930's.

The reduction of zinc from lead blast furnace slags using hydrogen was studied at 1300¦C as part of a laboratory investigation of zinc fuming. To perform the experiments, 300 g "spent slag" was melted in a crucible. Hydrogen was then injected into the slag through a lance and fresh blast furnace slag was added regularly in small quantities over a period of 40 minutes. Zinc added in the fresh slag was reduced and the zinc level of the bulk slag attained a steady state value of between 1 and 9% after about 10 minutes, depending on the gas injection rate. Because of the high reactivity of hydrogen, bulk supply of hydrogen to the slag was the rate limiting step at the flow rates used and it is believed that the gas-slag reactions in the system were at equilibrium. A partially/stabilized zirconia cell with a Ni/NiO reference electrode was immersed in the slags during the experiments and the steady/state oxygen potentials of the slags were measured. By using the experimental oxygen potential values and calculated values of the steady state concentrations of zinc in the offgas, the activity of ZnO in the slags was calculated from the Gibbs's free energy change for the reaction:

Oakbridge, in combination with its joint venture partner, Nippon Steel of Japan, is expanding its Bulga underground and open cut mines to meet the growing demand for coal in the Asian market. Expansion works underway will see the Bulga underground mine become a world leader in underground productivity, the introduction of a high capacity dragline into the open cut mine (largest capacity dragline in NSW) as well as a major upgrade of the coal preparation plant (CPP) and coal handling facilities (CHF) to process the increased production. This paper describes the planning and implementation of this major expansion program and highlights the rationale behind some key aspects of the program.

Mineral sands make up only 3% of the value of mineral production in WA. However, the distribution of mining operations, close to the more highly populated south-west coastal areas, and the wide range of land-tenures and land-uses involved has resulted in the most complex range of regulatory procedures found anywhere in the State's mining industry.Mineral sands are mined on private agricultural and "minerals-to-owner" land, State forests, nature reserves, coastal reserves and vacant Crown land. Local Government authorities, State Government departments and private landholders can, depending on the land tenure, be involved in setting the environmental conditions for mining operations and supervising subsequent rehabilitation. In the past, rehabilitation was predominantly aimed at establishing an agricultural land-use after mining; however, it is now necessary for mining companies to rehabilitate mined areas to a much wider range of end land-uses.

Mining conditions imposed by a coal seam roof can be analysed according to natural causes, before consideration of strata control. All types of roof behaviour can be explained by considering only three independent variables. They are roof rock types, rock stresses and discontinuities. Roof rock types encountered in the Sc.ithern Coalfield of New South Wales (NSW) are sandstone, shale, mudstone, laminite and coal. Each rock has its own mode of failure. Lithological stability of the sediments varies from one type to another. Regional stresses upon a coal seam roof will vary in magnitude according to the proportion of gravitational stress, which is related to depth of cover, and residual stress, which is related to the maximum depth of burial and may be gauged by coal rank. Local stresses will vary according to tectonic deformation, related to irregularities in seam structure.

In 1948, it became clear that the ventilation system of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines, would be inadequate for future operations. The,paper describes in detail the process of designing an entirely new ventilation system for a large underground mining operation. The system was based on a single new upcast airway to be located on the boundary of the two properties, which were to be ventilated in parallel as two separate ventilating districts.From calculations of resistance, and assessments of future air requirements, the duties of a new exhaust fan to be located on the collar of the upcast airway were specified as 700,000 cubic feet per minute at 2·6 in. w.g. total pressure for initial operation in 1953 increasing to a maximum of 900,000 c.f.m. at 3·6 in. w:g. total pressure ten years later. The economic size of the new airway was calculated from a consideration of the first thirty years operation of the system, and it was decided to provide a 20 ft. diameter concrete-lined shaft.The new system went into operation five years after the initial planning, and the effect of the difference between actual and predicted rates and distribution or production are discussed. The final result was entirely satisfactory.INTRODUCTIONThe first proposal for an investigation of The Zinc Corporation Limited-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited ventilation system with a view to putting it on a proper technical basis was made in 1938. Acoustic Emission structural integrity evaluation tests rely on the validity of the detected acoustic emission data and the ability of the practitioner to both analyse and interpret the data to make a correct decision on the future use of the structure tested. Unfortunately with acoustic emission surveillance testing, it is not possible to know that all the available data has been assessed property. The equipment sensitivity, threshold settings, and event capture capacity, when combined with the decision making ability of the operator in real time, make it very difficult to achieve reliable integrity evaluation. The main problem is to interpret the data and so any monitoring system should involve expert systems in conjunction with both acoustic emission and other operational monitoring data to maximise the utilisation of the large amounts of information now available from operating plants, mines and structures.

The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown.
