The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

Gravity Leaching of high-grade gravity gold concentrates, such as Knelson Concentrates, with the ACACIA Reactor represents a new generation of concentrate treatment methods. The ACACIA Reactor is a complete packaged plant for the maximising of gold recoveries from gravity gold concentrates. This paper will introduce the process technology and provide process results from the Porgera ACACIA Reactor installation. The advantages of the ACACIA Reactor are many, and justification for installation has been varied. The typical advantages of the process include: increased recovery of gold from the Knelson Concentrate; no return of high-grade table tails, often grading several thousand g/t, into the mill circuit; reduction in tails grades of slow leaching gold; reduction in the requirement for operating staff by the removal of the manual tabling process and replacing with a fully automated treatment system; improved security by removing the tabling step where operating staff come into direct contact with visible gold; improved health and safety, by the removal of the treatment steps for the table concentrate, which often include operators handling corrosive chemicals and the production of sulphur and arsenic compound fumes; and improved metallurgical accounting, by allowing daily head grade calculations. The ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production for over two years, and has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, there are now four full installations of the processing plant, including Anglogold Union ReefÆs, Anglogold Sunrise Dam, PACMIN Carosue Dam and Porgera Joint Venture.

Starting from comprehensive programme systems for monitoring tasks of any kind, this paper follows the steps of the programme system hierarchy from top to bottom. The monitoring and control centres for entire production units, the subordinate centres, i.e. district control centres, the microcomputer based autonomous control systems, and data input by mobile terminals are discussed. To an increasing extent, the main emphasis is shifted from monitoring and control of individual machinery to optimized operation of extremely complex comprehensive systems. Network displays, for instance displays of production, transport, supply- and evacuation-networks as well as of safety systems, gain increasing importance. Personnel deployment systemsand planning networks as well as stocktaking and accounting are more and more closely linked with the above-mentioned networks. In order to keep development and application (purchasing) costs low, and to assure compatibility, the use of standard modules is to be assigned particular importance. New module developments are introduced, and the design of standard interfaces for computer and module coupling are discussed.For conclusion, a short view is given on the opinion of the line manage-ments on how future hierarchic systems should be featured in terms of individual units and overall systems, and used.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with sodium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is boiled with concentrated nitric acid and then 2 ml. of a phosphotungstate solution are added. After dilution to 10 ml. with water, the solution is heated in a boiling water-bath for not less than 10 min. When cold, the solution is extracted with 2 ml. of iso-amyl alcohol and the yellow phosphotungstovanadate complex is compared with a standard series. Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 samples per man-day of 8 hr.

During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. Some general features relating to the type of deformation produced have been discussed in a previous paper.While it is admitted that the conditions prevailing through this work differ' in some respects from those of industrial rolling practice, it is felt that many of the factors investigated have an important practical significance. New and more cost-effective methods of haulage and hoisting will be needed to develop the underground mines of the future. A review of the development of technology since the 1950s shows that once mechanised equipment became available it took 25 years for appropriate mining methods to be developed and the equipment made reliable, then a further 25 years to reach todayÆs level of automation and reliability. Suggestions are made about possible areas for ongoing research with the observation that there is little research worldwide into disruptive technologies. A call is made for better organisation and presentation of the opportunities and potential benefits of new underground mining technologies.

The upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado, USA, contains deposits of fluvial tailings from historical mining operations in the Leadville area. These deposits are possible non-point sources of acid and metal contamination to surface- and ground-water systems. We used stable-metal isotopes to help ascertain metal retention and release mechanisms that influence metal transport from the deposits to shallow ground-water systems. To accomplish this, we excavated an intact core from a small fluvial tailings deposit and performed laboratory column experiments to examine the amount of metals leaching through the core. Deionised water was continuously applied to the top of the core, and effluent was collected from the bottom of the core for a period of about two months. Three saturation conditions were used, including unsaturated, partially saturated, and fully saturated. Reducing conditions developed upon partial and complete saturation of the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, core effluents were acidic (pH 2.8 - 3.5) and contained elevated metal concentrations. During a portion of the unsaturated leaching phase, stable-metal isotope spikes and conservative tracers were simultaneously applied to the top of the core. The isotopes provide a means to delineate metal behaviour within the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, the isotope spikes did not exhibit breakthrough with simultaneously added conservative tracers. However, some of the stable-metal isotope spikes did break through when reducing conditions occurred in the core (during the partial- and completesaturation conditions). In this paper, we use Cd as an example of the utility of stable-metal isotopes in geochemical studies. In the case of Cd, after the core was partially saturated, the 111Cd spike was released as evidenced by a change in the Cd isotope ratios in the effluent. This release continued during the fully saturated leaching phase, however, the total Cd concentration did not increase. These results suggest that the 111Cd spike was retained inside the core during the unsaturated leaching phase, and only partially released as reducing conditions developed. Results from this core-leaching experiment indicate there is a large reservoir of water-soluble material within the fluvial tailings deposit, which yields elevated metal concentrations and high acidity, and which may degrade adjacent ground- and surface-water quality. Use of stable metal isotopes in this study facilitated the determination of different metal-retention processes, metal-release processes, and metal sources in the fluvial tailings deposit in response to changing geochemical conditions.

The location of the Inglewood Goldfield is 40 km north-west of Bendigo on the Calder Highway and covers an area of over 1600 hectares. The field was discovered during the 1850s gold rush and over 16 000 people camped on the field. Mining first began in 1859 and since then more than seven tonnes of gold has been removed from four major lines of reef. Most of the gold was won in the period between 1900 and 1940.. Goldquest NL currently has leases over approximately 1550 hectares and through its historical research has identified 142 known reefs.

The use of long-hole in-seam drilling techniques for seam gas drainage ahead of mining was introduced to the Australian coal industry by ACIRL in mid-1981. ACIRL's research program has involved the development and demonstration of drilling and borehole survey technology in addition to evaluating the gas drainage potential of long-hole in- seam boreholes. This paper presents the results of the long-hole drilling carried out to date in the Illawarra District of the New South Wales coal fields. Drilling experience in relation to both vertical and horizontal directional control of the drill string, drill performance and borehole survey techniques are discussed. In addition, results of gas drainage effected by the long boreholes are presented. Future potential and requirements for further development of this technology are Reviewed.

Lead residue from the Zinc Leach Plant at Pasminco's Port Pirie Lead Smelter was previously filtered on a vacuum drum filter and further dried in a gas fired rotary kiln prior to stockpiling and transport to the Sinter Plant. This process involved several materials handling stages, recycled significant amounts of zinc and often resulted in poor environmental conditions. These problems have been overcome by pumping the thickened leach residue approximately 450m to the Sinter Plant where it is filtered in a Larox Automatic Pressure Filter. The filter cake is discharged onto a conveyor belt, held in a storage hopper and then fed directly to the main sinter plant feed stream. Filtrate is returned to the process for additional zinc recovery. The laboratory and pilot plant filtration results are briefly discussed and compared with the operating plant data. The filter installation and ancillaries are described in detail along with the commissioning, operating and maintenance experience over the past 4 years. This installation has overcome the environmental and materials handling problems and resulted in annual savings of approximately $1 million.

LANDSAT imagery has renewed interest in linear features first recognised by E. S. Hills in a physiographic model of Australia. Certain of these lineaments are aligned with structures which control mineralisation.Lineament guidelines are potentially useful in many poorlyexposed areas if they can be recognised early enough in exploration and drilling programs leading to mine development.A case history based on the Charters Towers Gold Field indicates that lineament guidelines can be established early enough to guide development ofnew mines. The position of the Charters Towers Lineament was known as early as 1956. Subsequently, more detailed publications identified and classified associated lineaments which provide intersections correlated with gold occurrences. The discovery of a significant orebody at one of the most prominent lineament intersections came in 1975. Mine drilling has confirmed the influence ofintersecting structural trends indicated by lineaments but not by previous regional mapping.Recent gold discoveries south of Charters Towers lie in a grid of prominent lineaments. The development of mines about Charters Towers will provide additional understanding of relationships between centres of mineralisation and lineament intersections. This understanding may in future be sufficient to encourage exploration for a new generation of concealed gold deposits in northeastern Queensland.

Flotation is affected by several factors, part of which depends on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore and part on process variables. Sulfide Ni-Cu ores occur typically in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks. Serpentine minerals are also common. As a consequence of metamorphosis, sulfides and secondary minerals may be finely disseminated in an altered ore matrix. The floatability of minerals depends also on process variables. Oxidation of sulfide particles, process iron and dissolved ions in process water affect the behaviour of sulfides. The effects of some essential factors on flotation of Ni-Cu ores are considered.

Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

The characterisation of the flotation kinetic response in future mining deposits is important because the flotation response is affected by changes in ore mineralogy. Current methods for characterising the flotation response of different ore types, such as the JK floatability index test (JKFIT) methodology, require at least 10 kg of feed material. In geometallurgical applications, this material is taken from core samples. Core samples are generally obtained using specialised drills and are limited in nature. Thus, it would be beneficial to develop a laboratory technique that required less sample material but still characterised the flotation response of different ore types. The JK mineral separation index (JKMSi) is a small-scale flotation test that requires significantly less feed material (10 g of sample/data point). This study aims to investigate the JKMSi system kinetics and to validate this technique using the JKFIT proven methodology. The JKMSi flotation kinetics were manipulated by varying selected system parameters. The relationship between these parameters and mineral recovery was used to obtain floatability characteristics of the ore. For an ore sample containing chalcopyrite and pyrite, it was found that the chalcopyrite floatability parameters determined from both the JKMSi and JKFIT tests were of the same order of magnitude and the mass fractions of the fast, slow and non-floating components were similar. For pyrite, the floatability parameters were not of the same order of magnitude, but modifications to the test procedure have been identified, which may correct this.CITATION:Morgan, S, Bradshaw, D J and Schwarz, S, 2012. This paper aims to collate the metallurgical test work undertaken on the Barrytown mineral sands deposit. It is intended to serve as a summary of mineral dressing work undertaken by all interested parties up to the time of writing. Areas requiring further investigation are: in situ grades and recoveries of accessory minerals,the question of 'rank' of ilmenite within the deposit,flow sheet development for the recovery of gold and monazite, andcost analysis to investigate the relative worth of other minerals; notably rutile. Flow sheet development with respect to the Accessory Minerals cannot be accurately defined until the importance of each mineral in terms of grade, recovery and expected revenue is determined. To date, ilmenite and zircon flows are well documented. Further work is needed to quantify recovery's and flows of the other minerals; notably monazite, gold and rutile.
