Grade control is an important factor in the on-going success of a mining operation. Grade control criteria will vary depending on the commodity being mined. Financial considerations determine the actual grade control criteria at any one mine site. Mining and metallurgical capital and operating costs are ultimately used in ascertaining cut-off grades employed in grade control. The metallurgical characteristics of the ore, and ultimately the equipment selection and design of the plant, are based on samples provided by the exploration geologist. Ore variability is an important factor in designing the process plant. Ore variations, outside of those catered for in the design, as well as large ore changes on a daily basis, will impact on the metallurgical performance, and hence the economics of a mining operation. Therefore good liaison between the grade control geologist and metallurgist will undoubtedly lead to a more consistent, and more profitable mining operation.

The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

Discovery 2000 is basically about data, its collection, management, assessment and dissemination. A major focus of Discovery 2000 is the collection of new geoscientific data. However, the Department is already a major source of data on the geology and mineral resources of New South Wales. These existing data when combined with the new data, will greatly enhance the knowledge of and information on the geology and the mineral development potential of New South Wales. This paper discusses some of the existing datasets and outlines how they can be accessed. It also gives an insight into the Department's strategy for data and information technology management.

It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. Flotation recovery in geometallurgical modelling is usually predicted based on relationships developed from batch flotation testing of different ore types. These batch flotation tests are usually performed at a constant set of operating conditions and at a fixed feed grind size P80. Usually the laboratory feed grind P80 is that which is expected to be produced in the full-scale flotation circuit for that particular ore type.Flotation recovery will be a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution, with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation of this fraction. This valuable mineral particle size distribution is not characterised by the solids P80 parameter alone. The proportion of material in each class will also be a function of the slope of the size distribution and the degree of preferential grinding of the valuable mineral in comparison to the total mass of the ore.This paper will demonstrate (through example) how these other size distribution parameters can change with a change in grinding technology, the size and operating conditions used in a grinding unit and the characteristics of the classification technology used in conjunction with the grinding unit. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how this can result in these parameters being very different in laboratory testing to that produced in the full-scale comminution circuit. A rule of thumb that laboratory rod milling rather than ball milling produces a size distribution most similar to that of the full-scale grinding circuit will be challenged. These differences can result in a significant change in flotation recovery. It is therefore important to consider these parameters when developing a laboratory geometallurgical program, to enable more accurate prediction of the flotation recoveries that will be achieved in the full-scale process.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E and Jankovic, A, 2013. Narrow vein mining, as most types of mining, faces important geotechnical challenges. The specificity of geotechnical challenges in narrow vein mines stems from the nature of the deposits, which are often inclined, discordant and found within fractured rock or faults or in shear zones within country rock. This complicates the construction of representative geomechanical models and limits the applicability of several engineering design tools. Furthermore, in certain cases, the severity of encountered geotechnical problems is considerably greater in narrow vein than in wider orebodies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and other challenges in narrow vein mines with a focus on how these are currently addressed. Of particular concern is the use of manual labour working close to the mining face where there is greater exposure to geomechanical hazards. This review concludes with a particular emphasis on understanding the limitations of commonly used engineering tools and techniques to address geotechnical problems in narrow vein mines.CITATION:Hadjigeorgiou, J, 2012. The development, piloting and engineering design of an innovative water treatment system for process water produced by a uranium mine mill are described. The process incorporates lime/carbonate softening (Stage 1), reverse osmosis (Stage 2) and biopolishing (Stage 3) to produce water of quality suitable for release to the receiving environment. Comprehensive performance data are presented for each stage. The unique features of the proposed process are: recycle of the lime/CO2 softening sludge to the uranium mill as a neutralant; potential use of power station off-gas for carbonation; and the potential recovery and recycle of ammonia from the RO reject stream.

In Australia, ilmenite is produced from beach sand deposits. These deposits contain varying quantities of the valuable minerals zircon, rutile and ilmenite, along with a variety of other minerals. The valuable minerals are upgraded using combinations of gravity, magnetic and electrostatic processing techniques to yield high-grade products. One of the penalty elements present in ilmenite concentrates is chromium, present mostly as chrome spinels. This mineral is particularly difficult to separate from ilmenite, as the properties of the two minerals are very similar in relation to the traditional separation processes. While the deposits which have been treated in Australia in the past have had only low levels of chromium present, many of the newer deposits contain much higher levels of contamination and, thus, there is an increasing need to develop robust processes to separate chrome spinel from the ilmenite. Flotation, which is a unit process with the potential to solve this problem, has surprisingly received little attention for this application. The literature suggests the research effort to characterise the general flotation properties of chromite (chrome spinel with high chromium content) has been extensive and a substantial amount of data is available. However, the problem of separating a small amount of chrome spinel from a large amount of ilmenite requires a different approach to that from separating chromite from siliceous gangue, which has been the main commercial focus of chromite flotation in the past. Much of the work done has been fundamental in nature and the results obtained are fairly inconsistent, as is the testwork completed at batch and pilot plant scale. While these inconsistencies have been attributed to the variable composition of the mineral, there is little evidence supporting this premise. Just as chrome spinel and ilmenite have similar physical characteristics, the flotation response of both minerals is also similar. This paper reviews the literature relating to the flotation of chrome spinel and presents a considered approach to the development of a robust flotation method to separate chrome spinel from ilmenite.

Investigations into the flotation behaviour of single minerals, mineral mixtures and ores at the CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering have led to the development of sophisticated laboratory flotation testing equipment. Both routine and complicated flotation investigations can be conducted in a precise and reproducible manner using procedures and equipment that have been refined over many years of conducting careful batch flotation testwork. Several important advances in flotation research can be attributed to changes in testing procedure developed as a consequence of the availability of this equipment. The flotation cell and ancillary equipment is described and associated developments and techniques discussed.

The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

Computer programs for the storage, retrieval and use of basic thermodynamic and physical property data for chemical substances are described. Methods are presented for the collection, critical assessment and pre- processing of source data for files containing enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity data for 3000 compounds, enthalpy and excess entropy for 200 dilute solutions and critical propert- ies and vapour pressure for 600 compounds. Retrieval programs are discussed which allow the tabulation or plotting of many basic and derived thermodynamic properties for chemical substances or balanced reactions. Examples are given of the use of such data to infer the stability or corrosion resistance of materials and the feasibility, yield and heat release of reactions. A general purpose calculation program is discussed which allows the equilibrium compos- ition to be found for complex systems with many species and phases, using the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Methods of correction for non-ideal behaviour in these systems are discussed, as well as methods for fixing, maximizing or minimizing any desired property of the system. Examples are given of the simulation of various laboratory Experiments and industrial processes by this method.
