Mt Keith concentrator treats low grade disseminated nickel sulfide ore supplied from the adjoining open pit mine. It is a traditional crushing, two-staged closed circuit grinding circuit (SAG & Ball Mills), followed by a complex split-size rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation circuit. In 2016, 10.5 Mt was milled, at an average head grade of 0.54% Ni, yielding 35 000 nickel metal tonnes in concentrate.Historical analysis of the plant data indicated that of all the nickel lost in the fines rougher circuit tails stream, 25.6% was recoverable in an eight minute laboratory scale flotation test. These results implied that this fine nickel was readily available for recovery in the plant, either through operational improvements or additional flotation capacity. With operation optimisation ongoing, and capital within the business focused elsewhere, plant personnel were challenged to think differently about improving recovery.In 2012, a separate project to improve plant recovery when treating high talc ore was completed. Amongst other vessels, this project saw the installation of two 150 m3 Outotec Cells to the scavenger section of the fines rougher, middlings and scavengers (RMS 1) circuit. Since installation, the operation of these cells resulted in difficulties immediately upstream with instability in the scavenger cells. It was therefore decided that these cells would be better suited to treating the fines rougher circuit tails.The alterations required to divert these flows were minimal, with the capital project totalling $220 000.In the two years since installation, the fines rougher tailings nickel grade has dropped by 9.9%. The scavenger circuit has also seen a 2.8% reduction in tailings nickel grade, and instability issues were immediately resolved. This project serves as a lesson in how existing plant infrastructure may be better utilised to maximise recovery. Although this is especially applicable when capital constrained, such re-appropriation can be considered at any point to maximise return on existing assets. CITATION:Hussey, L, 2017. Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. "Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99 per cent extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. The method is explained in the text. Monitoring of the goaf gases as an early indication of spontaneous combustion has been incorporated in the mining cycle by placement of tubes in the goaf as the face retreats and continuous analysis of the goaf gases made at the surface by the National Coal Board tube bundle monitoring system.

The main difference between this technique and other simplified methods is that a non-uniform boundary condition is allowed for. The production of synthetic crude oil requires a suitable coal or a coal extract modified by hydrogenation for pyrolysis. Existing classifications are broadly based on historical and current needs. One, Seyler's, is based on a visual display which can be used to present petrographic bounds. The analysis of the coal extracts from solvent hydrogen-donor testing allows an experimental limit to be described and a plant limit to be indicated. Australian black coals are discussed within these petrographic and plant bounds and their limitations as a feed for the production of synthetic crude presented. Potential uses for the aromatic liquid products are suggested. The application of the diagram as a screening procedure for sub-hydrous coals is described.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. Concentration ranges are presented for 15 trace elements not previously reported in Australian bituminous coals. The results were obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis, which has sufficiently high sensitivity to enable determination of many elements directly in coal at concentrations less than a few µg/g. The ranges found in Australian coal are similar to the ranges reported in North American bituminous coals.

The mining industry has a well deserved reputation earned over the years for innovation, engineering, management and the quick application to mining of emerging technology. The cumulative result is the economic exploitation of lower grade resources. The developments during the last decade have done nothing to tarnish the reputation. There are many that come easily to mind: the use of contractors for both surface and underground operations, a trend toward mine management contracts, the increasing recognition of the economic potential of ground support, and the development of physical measures to achieve it, - sophisticated measures to analyse blasting , and thus improve fragmentation, - instrumentation to assist geotechnical appraisal, - the development and application of the powerful and flexible, excavator, - the evolution of measures to improve grade control, - massive improvements in equipment productivity and reliability built largely around the application of hydraulics, - the development of powerful computer packages for orebody modelling, mine design and extraction, - simple "dense" fill systems, - maintenance management techniques including the greater use of off-site maintenance of exchange components, - the utilisation of communication systems for data transfer.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. A formalised approach to risk management has been regulated in the United Kingdom (UK) since the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM) came into force in 1995. These regulations have recently been revised in 2007. In response to a series of significant claims around the world the UK insurance industry published a code of practice for risk management of tunnels in 2003, and that was followed by an international version in 2006. Probably one of the main contributions of this new approach is the recognition that health and safety risks can best be addressed early in the process, initially by the owner and then by the designers. One of the aims is to achieve elimination of risks by good design. The advantage of a risk-based approach to tunnel design is that all risks are considered explicitly, and any residual risks in the design are communicated clearly to the construction team. This paper looks at the implementation of this formalised approach to risk management with reference to the A3 Hindhead Project. The design has been undertaken in accordance with the requirements of the CDM regulations, and also in compliance with the Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK. An outline of the risk-based design process used is provided, including examples.

A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

To speed up multivariate geostatistical simulation it is common to transform the set of attributes into spatially uncorrelated factors that can be simulated independently. One decorrelation method is the method of minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF), where a two structure linear model of coregionalisation is assumed. The transformation decorrelates the theoretical model exactly, but the actual data are only approximately decorrelated. The MAF transformation can therefore be seen as a special case of a non-orthogonal approximate diagonaliser of a set of symmetric matrices. A more general approach for approximate joint diagonalisation (AJD) has been developed in the context of blind source separation. For these AJD algorithms no assumptions are made beyond symmetry of the individual matrices and so they can be applied to a family of experimental semivariogram matrices. In their application there are no restrictions on the number of structures in the linear model of coregionalisation (LMC) thus removing one of the conditions placed on the subsequent modelling of the spatial structure of the factors. In this paper the general background for the U-WEDGE AJD method is presented. It is shown that the U-WEDGE method achieves better spatial decorrelation than the MAF method. The factors derived from U-WEDGE are simulated using conditional turning bands simulation and then backtransformed to attribute space.

It is argued that the capture of par- ticles by bubbles is primarily caused by hydrophobic ("structural") attraction forces. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. The recent experiments of Israelachvili and Pashley (Nature, 300: 341-342, 1982) with hydrophobic mica plates provide the first measurements of the range and magni- tude of hydrophobic interaction forces.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.
