Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. The coal mass flow monitor was developed to measure the instantaneous mass flow rate of pulverised coal to the copper reverberatory furnace at Mount Isa. The instrument was calibrated with an isokinetic coal sampler which was installed immediately downstream from the coal mass flow monitor. Readings from the coal mass flow monitor were used to control the feedrate of coal to the furnace and this helped to stabilise the furnace operation.Coal samples obtained from the isokinetic coal sampler were also sized using a Leeds and Northrup Microtrac analyser. The coal size was critical to reverberatory furnace performance. These developments significantly improved the overall combustion control of the furnace and gains of ten percent were made in the furnace thermal efficiency. Testwork on an auxiliary arch coal burner is also reported.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

Permian coal from Western Australia's only producing coalfield at Collie is the dominant fuel used in generating electricity for the State's interconnected grid. Collie coal is sub-bituminous, non-coking and has a low ash, medium volatiles and high moisture content. The seams were laid down in a fluvial basin which extended beyond the Collie Basin and included the Wilga and Boyup Brook Basins at least. Adjacent parts of the southwest Yilgarn Block are prospective for Collie-type basins. In the past few years significant deposits have been delineated within the Perth Basin, specifically on the Vasse Shelf and in the Hill River area. In the former area high quality steaming coals are correlated with the lowest coal bearing member at Collie. The seams are amenable to underground mining and because of their high quality, the coal may have export potential. Sub-bituminous coal deposits of Jurassic age are present in the Hill River area. Exploration has down-graded the prospectivity of the Carnarvon and Canning Basins for sub-bituminous near-surface coal deposits. Tertiary lignite deposits are present in palaeo-drainage systems in the southern part of the State and their potential for development is being evaluated.

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) consists of mining companies, rail operators, rail track owners and terminal operators, together forming the worldÆs largest coal exporting facility. In 2008, the throughput of HVCC was about 92 million tonnes, or more than ten per cent of the worldÆs total trade in coal for that year. The coal export operation generates around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. As demand has increased significantly in recent years, and is expected to increase further in the future, efficient supply chain management is crucial. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator Limited (HVCCC) was founded to enable integrated planning and coordination of the interests of all parties, thus improving the efficiency of the system as a whole. One of the many planning challenges faced by the HVCCC is that of annual maintenance planning. Different supply chain elements, such as trains, railway track, terminal equipment and load points, must undergo regular preventive and corrective maintenance, leading to significant reductions in system capacity (up to 15 per cent). However good alignment of the maintenance tasks can reduce their impact, and the HVCCC undertakes an annual process to ensure the impact of maintenance on the supply chain capacity is as small as possible. This is achieved in an iterative negotiation process between HVCCC and individual service providers. In the past, maintenance schedule optimisation was largely manual, which for the more than 1000 tasks involved is quite labour-intensive.In this paper the authors describe an approach developed at the University of Newcastle in partnership with the HVCCC to automate this schedule optimisation process. We will discuss our experience in applying exact (mixed integer programming) and heuristic techniques from mathematics and computer science to address the problem. This work is anticipated to lead to new decision-support tools for the HVCCCÆs capacity planning team.

A review of the various methods of degrad- ing cyanide either from gold processing liquors or electroplating baths is presented with some discussion on their relative merits or problems. Whilst alkaline chlorination is common practice in many U.S. and Canadian plants it poses particular problems for certain plants. Alter- native methods include electrolysis, hydrolysis and air oxidation with activated carbon as catalyst which are also integral steps in the carbon-in-pulp process. A basic study of the degradation of cyanide ion has been carried out therefore to determine the effect of temperature, oxygen and carbon. It is shown that carbon is an excellent catalyst for degradation by air and likely to lead to higher losses of cyanide in a C.I.L. circuit. Degradation by hydrolysis is important at high temperatures and high pH such as employed in the Pressure Zadra or Anglo elution processes. Carbon catalysed degradation of cyanide by oxygen in effluent streams may be an environmentally acceptable alternative to conventional chlorine degradation.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

During the past five years Amdel has in vestigated metallurgically and mineralogically most of the Western Australian nickel sulphide ores. The mineralogical work has been carried out primarily to assist the metallurgical stud- ies and this paper reviews the application of mineralogical techniques to such ores to obtain information of direct use to the process met- allurgist. The techniques are described briefly and results are given of various in- vestigations of head samples, concentrates and tailings.. It is demonstrated that mineral- ogy has an important role to play in the optim- ization of nickel processing operations.

Current and proposed methods of resource classification relate to the geological, economic and technical confidence in the estimated resource. Geological confidence is, however, only vaguely defined. It is largely related to the level of drilling and sampling, to the geologistÆs perceived level of confidence in his/her work and on the continuity of the mineralisation. Rarely has any real attempt been made to assess how well a deposit has been explored, sampled and evaluated and how accurate or realistic the geological model is for the deposit. This contribution reviews the impact of two of the potential sources of error, ie sample recovery and quality. The first of these parameters is measured during logging and assaying, but is often forgotten during grade and tonnage estimation, and resource classification. Preliminary studies have shown that modelling of this parameter is a valid exercise, which should accompany the evaluation of grade and other economic parameters. The sample recovery factor for an ore block can then be used to reassess the confidence in the block. It could, for example, downgrade the status of a Measured Resource to an Indicated Resource even though standard methods might indicate that the higher classification is applicable. A method is proposed by which this recovery factor could be incorporated into current resource classifications producing a more sophisticated and comprehensive measure of sample quality. A review of the sources of error naturally leads to the assignment of scores to each stage of the evaluation process, depending on the methods used and assumptions made. Sample recovery is one important factor, which is likely to appear at several stages. These scores can then be weighted and combined in a manner resembling that used in the CSIR Rock Mass Classification. This score will then allow the resource estimate to be rated on a scale from 0 to 100 per cent to produce a Quality Control Index (QCI). However, this index must then be modified using an Evaluation Difficulty Index (EDI), which reflects the difficulty of a particular style of mineralisation to accurate resource estimation. This results in the production of a Resource Reliability Rating (RRR), which can then be linked to international classifications, such as the 1999 JORC; 2000 CIM; and 2001 EURO codes. This will permit a more precise definition of geological confidence levels or, combined with estimation error, produce a classification system in its own right. This same rating can also be used as the basis for technical audits of mineral projects.

A methodology is described to integrate heap leaching into a CIP operation. The paper firstly describes what is meant by a 'systems approach'. A broad view of the objectives of integration of heap leaching into CIP is given, followed by the components of the system, and then a description of the methodology for integration. The seven stages of integration are given as determination of distribution of gold, sampling, metallurgical testwork, conceptual study, pilot heap operation, pit modelling and pit optimisation. The final result is a series of optimised curves which determine the maximum value of the orebody, and the optimum cut-over grade from CIP to heap leaching.

Blasting can impact the efficiency of entire downstream mining operation. Individual technology solutions for blasting have been available in the industry for many years but all of them only cater for certain aspects of blasting. Many of them are based on individual research and/or experiences. Some of the available software solutions are not suitable to be used in the field as that they need advanced skills or tools. Also, most do not take technology advancements like mobility, advanced data analytics, web solutions and integration into consideration. Hence, no technology platform is currently present in the industry that addresses all potential needs a blaster may need in an integrated manner.This paper presents an integrated solution that takes care of all aspects of blasting – design blasts according to mine plan; collect data after drilling has been carried out (as there is often difference in designed and actual drilled hole locations in the field); predict blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations, wave front reinforcement and flyrock distance; and after assessment, allows changes in charging, delay timing and sequence. The technology solution is a secure, cloud-hosted, web-based software-as-a-service solution that can be accessed from anywhere. Also it has a mobile app, which is available for both Android and iPhone/iPad. The mobile app is also integrated with the web-based solution using application programming interface calls to the central data repository.Case studies for two limestone mines are presented where this solution is being used in its initial format. This software platform enabled analysis of the outcome from a previous blast pattern and then subsequently allowed optimisation of blasting operations based on historical data. Uses of this platform have resulted in improved key performance indicators in these two limestone mines. The mobile app as part of this platform enables extensive field blast data capture and analysis and also various predictions before a blast. Data collected include blast parameters, individual hole charging, initiation pattern, videos, photographs and vibration records for analysis/reporting. The key features of the solution are a blast designer, a detailed blast data collection/analysis and a series of environmental predictors. These predictors give blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations and wave front reinforcement and take remedial steps before blasting to optimise and control adverse environmental impact. A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

The major slime forming minerals in coal seams are generally montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite, and due to the consistant trend to full seam mechanisation in New South Wales and Queensland these minerals remain in the feed to a coal preparation plant. After coming into contact with water their size degradation is very rapid, and therefore they mostly report to the fine coal cleaning section of the plant. Froth flotation, being the most effective method of beneficiating fine coal, is widely practised in these two major coal producing states of Australia. Plant experience and laboratory tests suggest that the presence of these slimes in the flotation circuit depresses the flotation of fine coal. Although the deleterious effects of slimes on the flotation behaviour of minerals is well known, the mode of their adsorption at the mineral surface has been a subject of controversy for some time. In this paper, on the basis of the surface properties of slime forming minerals and coal, a model has been put forward to explain the adsorption of slimes at the coal surface. The degree of slime coating has been examined by scanning electron microscopy. Laboratory tests have revealed that with the appropriate use of polyvalent phosphate electrolytes these slimes can be liberated from the coal surface. Just attrition and desliming are not enough to ensure complete liberation of slimes. Coal, after treatment with these electrolytes and then deslimed, floats readily with a common frother, such as MIBC. Modifications in the conventional flotation circuits have been suggested to ensure an efficient flotation of fine coal.

Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.
