To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The approaches to simulation and the techniques to carry it out are discussed in detail covering drying and firing for the straight grate process. The CSIRO simulator design is described and some errors in simulation are discussed.

It is my role at this juncture to report to you on behalf of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions itself. In essence, the Council is an orbital body - a little like Halley's Comet - it returns to earth, in spectacular style, once in every four years. We must acknowledge, however, that the spectacle is provided by the constituent member body organising the particular event and, on this occasion, it is The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. On behalf of the Council and its other constituent bodies may I thank the Australasian Institute most sincerely. Our thanks go to Sir James Foots, the President of the 13th Congress, and to all the members of the organising committee and to the five sub- committees. Over 40 people are involved as full members and I am certain there will have been many more involved in very meaningful ways. None of this great- team would ask me to mention them individually, I'm sure, but to fail to acknowledge the role of John Funnell, the Honorary Secretary, would be an unforgivable omission. We must also thank the kindred institutions in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia who all helped with the tours themselves or with the initial preparations. Qantas, Jetabout Australia, and Jetabout Singapore have all also made very important contributions and, in our different ways, we each owe our thanks to them. At the two most recent meetings of the Congress - in Hong Kong and Johannesburg - Professor Marston Fleming made this report on behalf of the Council and was supported on both occasions by Robert MacWilliam as vice- chairman. Marston died in 1983 and Robert died in 1984; both men contributed a great deal to CMMI and we will miss their counsel for a long time. As you know, Sir Alistair Frame succeeded Marston Fleming as chairman in 1984 and I succeeded Robert MacWilliam as Vice-chairman.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

Reflectance spectroscopy has become an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. However, there are few reported cases where the technique has been applied to the Hamersley Province channel iron deposits (CID). The Bonnie Creek CID, located ÿ140 km north of Newman in Western Australia, represents one of a number of CIDs recently discovered in the Hamersley Province. Reflectance spectroscopic analysis using the CSIRO HyLoggerÖ automated scanning system, in conjunction with X-ray diffraction and compositional analysis, was used to characterise and map the ore and gangue mineralogy in CID drill core. Using CSIROÆs spectral mineral characterisation scripts, it was possible to map the downhole distribution of the Fe-oxide abundance, hematite:goethite ratio and the gibbsite and kaolinite abundance. Spectral estimates of kaolinite abundance were found to be closely related to loss on ignition measurements at 650¦C and the spectral kaolinite abundance index provided a reliable estimate of the total weight percentage Al2O3 content. In addition, downhole HyLoggerÖ scanning of diamond drill core reliably mapped the distribution of kaolinite as supported by coincidentally elevated contents of alumina and silica. Furthermore, spectrally-derived estimates of iron oxide abundance were well related to assayed Fe wt per cent contents and use of the spectral iron oxide mineral index mapped the distribution of the goethite:hematite ratio, and demonstrated that material logged as high-grade ore in the Bonnie Creek CID was predominantly goethite-rich.CITATION:Wells, M and Hogan, P, 2013. The continuously growing coal mining industry of India presently includes shovel dumper combinations in open cast mines, sometimes with dragline mining of overburden, together with the whole range of longwall and bord and pillar underground mining, continuously undergoing fuller mechanisation. This transition from "low tech" to "high tech" systems is now monitored for reliability and provides bases for comparisons of downtime relative to age and make of equipment, whether imported or indigenous, including spare parts, as well as frequencies of particular failures to allow analysis and progressive improvement. Varying geologies complicate technology and equipment requirements, especially in underground mine,s with minimal technological standardisation, but now, reliability in South Eastern Coalfields Limited has been given more importance and superior technological back-up is being developed.

Uranium exploration was commenced in 1973 and carried out at a regional scale over a wide area of the northern part of the Camarvon Basin of Western Australia by Minatome Australia Pty Limited and their joint-venture partners. As a result, pervasive uranium mineralization has been found in the Cretaceous sandstones near Manyingee Hills in the Onslow Region, which were probably deposited in a near-shore, fluvia deltaic palaeo-environment.Mineralization is generally found in poorly sorted argillaceous sandstones and siltstones near redox fronts formed by oxidizing waters circulating in reduced sediments. The principal minerals found in the two Manyingee deposits delineated so far are coffinite, uraninite with associated pyrite in the reduced zones, and phosphuranylite, siderite and limonite in the oxidized zones. The presence of dissolved uranium in the superficial aquifers, of secondary uranium minerals as coatings on granitic rocks, and of recent uranium-bearing calcrete sediments, suggest that the whole Cretaceous-Precambrian system has been subjected to the formation ofroll-front type uranium deposits since the Cretaceous. Continuing exploration is locating additional uranium occurrences. The deposits outlined so far are being evaluated for their amenability to in situ leaching tests planned for 1982-1983.

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated. "Sustainable development has become an issue of ever increasing importance to the mining industry. The Ernst & Young (EY) mining industry risk radar regularly shows several sustainability elements in the top ten risks, with social license the number three risk in the 2014/15 survey. This is supported by the Fraser Institute survey results of 2013 showing that 36 per cent of responding companies indicated public opposition had affected their permitting and approvals process.Addressing these issues in a strategic way across a mining business that is then translatable to actions at operational level has remained an elusive goal in the industry. In addition the environment and community issues are commonly viewed as somewhat separate from financial and production issues and as a compliance cost rather than a value add. In their Harvard Business Review paper of 2011, ‘Creating Shared Value’, Porter and Kramer outline changes in thinking required for companies to improve their business sustainably through considering the societal issues impacted by their operations and products. Along the lines of ‘doing more with less’ companies’ value chains can be redefined to reduce energy, transport, water or other resource usage leaving additional resource for societal usage and/or reducing environmental impacts. This paper explores the linking of the holistic Five Capitals-based approach with the creating shared value (CSV) concept to help businesses unleash the benefits of innovation. Previous papers have demonstrated the potential for Five Capitals approach to create strategic value through sustainable development. Building on previous work, this paper provides an overview of the current status of holistic approaches to mine management and presents the application of the CSV concept on an African mine currently undertaking capitals-based strategic planning. Good design is manifest in the eventual achievement of the operational objectives. Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.

If a straight line should be drawn on the map (Fig 1) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to thewest, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the outh Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about it central portion, the zone may aptly be termed 'The Great Reefton Gold Belt.'The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

Complete identification requires a determination of the mineral phases present and their textural arrangement. Myths and misconceptions regarding cyanide in the mining industry are common. This is not surprising, given the other uses to which cyanide is, and has been put. Unfortunately, the economic benefits, largely due to the introduction of cyanide in towns such as Waihi are often unrecognized. In the current "green" environment, the New Zealand mining industry faces constant scrutiny and challenge. The use of cyanide in hard rock mining is one area which can stir the emotions of the public.   Cyanide can be transported, stored, used and disposed of in a safe manner. The modem mining industry has an excellent record regarding the safety and environmental issues relating to cyanide. Many of the fears relating to cyanide in the mining industry have proven to be unfounded. It is important that this reputation is maintained. This is possible given proactive and ongoing management of cyanide issues.

The paper presents a sound critical estimate of mathematical models presently used for the process of compaction of fine-grained materials. It shows the mathematical model of compaction developed by the authors, which was used to formulate the program of computer simulation of the process. The examples of computer simulation experiments of compaction of selected fine-grained materials regard the results of the experiments made by the authors on variability of external friction occuring in this process. Simulation examination presented in the paper crucially contributed towards the original method of selection of rational compaction technologies of fine-grained materials developed by the authors.

At 9.45 pm on Thursday, 12 July 1962 glass began to flow in an endless stream from a massive melting tank in a new Whangarei factory and a vital new industry was born û right on schedule. It wasn't good glass. It was ridged. It cracked. It rippled. It obstinately refused to emerge upstairs in the cutting room in one solid continuous sheet. But all through the night, drawing speeds were adjusted, temperatures changed. And on Friday morning, at 8:30, it finally came through as sheet û not perfect as yet, but sheet glass all the same. The rest is only a matter of time. Unfortunately, the buoyant enthusiasm displayed by the founders of the sheet glass industry in New Zealand, and the technical expertise of their European consultants, failed to bring the glass quality up to commercially acceptable standards and within six months, the company was in receivership. Taking over the role of producing New Zealand's sheet glass requirements, New Zealand Window Glass Company was formed as a partnership between two companies with long experience in sheet glass manufacture û Pilkington Brothers (NZ) Limited and Australian Consolidated Industries Limited. This paper sets out to identify the raw material requirements and controls necessary for the successful manufacture of sheet glass, and the availability and supply of suitable materials for use at Whangarei.

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.
