The word "mine" means different things to different people. To a professional in the mining industry, it may mean trucks and shovels, overburden dumps, headframes, mill buildings, and the other conventional nuts and bolts that constitute an operating mine. To an environmental- ist it may mean bulldozed trees and tailings dams. To a mining engineer who has spent a significant proportion of his career in mine and prospect evaluation, it can mean a hole in the ground with a liar at the top. The liar in this case is frequently not so through design but through ignorance. The purpose of this paper is to contribute in a small way to en- lightening that ignorance. In doing so, it will foster more effective deployment of the pool of risk capital available to the industry.

From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation,, metal production and metal purification. There have been significant changes in the Australian mineral sands industry in recent years due to changing supply and demand conditions, new product opportunities and opportunities for rationalisation of operations. Earnings within the industry have typically been volatile and this has been reflected in the share prices of listed mineral sands companies. Apart from the effects of variations in the state of the economy on the industry, share prices have also reflected the extent to which a company's earnings volatility is due to capital structure, the relative proportion of fixed costs to total costs and the nature of th'- sales mechanism. At the time of writing, the high prevailing share prices for industry participants and the current outlook for the industry would suggest that the time is opportune for raising equity capital. The immediate outlook for the industry and its various product segments appears favourable but beyond this the usual uncertainties remain. The new tax environment will cause most companies in the industry to have to rethink their dividend and capital structure policies. Most shareholders will now be concerned to maximize dividend receipts and minimise exposure to capital gains tax. Companies in the industry that have relied fairly strongly on earnings retention to help finance growth in the past will- need to look to increased equity raisings in the Future.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. The weathering profile, in arid terrains, is commonly capped by different kinds of hardened crust, whose formation is related to recent or former climates. One may distinguish silcretes, calcretes and the ferruginous (or ferro-aluminous) laterites. the present keynote address mostly deals with the lateritic regolith and, moreover, the influence it has on mineral exploration. The lateritic regolith, also called "cuirasse", is a result of a massive accumulation of Fe (and/or Al) oxides on top of weathering profiles developed during former, probably seasonal humid, climatic episodes, and whose preservation depends on the characteristics of later climates. The total thickness of such weathering profiles commonly exceeds 50 m, with an almost complete substitution of the rock forming minerals by secondary minerals as kaolinite and Fe-Al oxi- hydroxides (hematite, goethite, boehmite, gibbsite). Such an alteration of the primary minerals assemblage is of course accompanied by significant changes of the chemical composition, as concerns major and trace elements. The latter are distributed amongst the main secondary mineral phases or trapped in some primary resistant minerals, but may also be leached, totally or partially. Gold is also affected by lateritic weathering, as shown for instance by morphoscopic and geochemical studies of gold grains collected in the different horizons of the profile, which indicates some dissolution followed by reprecipitation.

The dissolution of metallic copper powder in aqueous solutions of cupric sulphate under the influence of ethylene gas was investigated. The dissolution reaction stoichiometry obtained was: Cue+(aq) + Cu(s) + 2C2H4(g) = 2(CuC2H4)+(aq) The rate of formation of the copper (I)-ethylene complex in the above reaction was studied in a laboratory autoclave and the effect pH, temperature, ethylene partial pressure and initial concentration on the dissolution rate was measured experimentally and expressed theoretically in terms of several simple conceptual kinetic models. The results led to the selection of optimum conditions for the reaction and the suggestion of an "ion-molecule reaction" mechanism to explain the very low activation energies for the reaction system. The area of application of this reaction lies in the direction of refining impure copper such as cement copper. Several experiments were performed in which an acidified solution of cupric sulphate under ethylene pressure was used to dissolve copper from the cement copper powder in the form of the copper (I)-ethylene complex, followed by the release of gas pressure to disproportionate the complex and precipitate a purer metallic copper.

This technical note describes a problem with WANG82, a ventilation network analysis programme. The problem was highlighted by Renison Ltd when using the programme on large, complex networks. Under certain circumstances the programme produced incorrect results or failed to converge to a solution.

Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. For deposits where a full assay suite of elements/oxides is available and where several variables are critical to the evaluation of the deposit, it is desirable for the estimated block values of all elements/oxides to sum to 100 per cent of the weight per cent. This is difficult to achieve in practice and the estimation methods used need to be designed to minimise bias of the key elements/oxides by ensuring that block estimates are consistent with the individual assays and that the estimated totals are as close as possible to 100 per cent.This paper presents a case study of two domains within a magnetite hematite deposit, one with a high level of drilling classified as Measured and one with a lower density of drilling classified as Indicated. Several estimation methods were tested to evaluate their ability to maintain consistency of the proportions of each element/oxide and sum to 100 per cent. The following methods were evaluated: ordinary kriging, co-kriging, inverse distance and min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) all as implemented in the Geovariances Isatis software.The comparisons showed that the MAF method produced the most robust estimates in terms of block totals and that grades and tonnages at the reporting cut-off were not significantly different between methods. The Project Financing Industry is currently being expanded en- compassing greater competition due to the improved worldwide economy. This has meant that money is in greater supply than demand for both loan and equity investment and is available for larger and higher risk ventures. The consequence of this is that the Project Financing Industry should be better able to provide more innovative forms of financing to meet the needs of mining and petroleum companies, regardless of size. Large mining and petroleum companies in Papua New Guinea should therefore be looking for ways to raise equity funds for exploration in greenfield areas, diversifying their risks through acquisition, and seeking to reduce their costs of borrowings. The small to medium sized mining sector should be looking to raise equity for increased ex- ploration on tenements and, where possible, to raise borrowings to fund expansion and further development of their projects. In summary, it is a period during which companies should take ad- vantage of available funding to augment their strategic plans and increase their long term returns to shareholders.

Two independent sets of observations from rifted con-tinental margins suggest a way to reach a quantitative under-standing of how the topography of rifted margins erodes. First, a prominent erosional escarpment, which demarcates an elevated, inland region of low relief from rugged, deeply-incised terrain on the seaward side, is the main feature of the geomorphology of many rifted continental margins. Second, apatite fission track ages from the southeast Australian and southwest Saudi Arabian margins scatter about constant Paleozoic ages over the higher elevations inland from the escarpment, but decrease systematically seaward of the escarpment to near-rifting ages approaching the coastlines. We have developed erosion models based on conservation of mass principles to explain these observations. These models seek to explain the "rejuvenation" of erosion at the time of rifting, initiation of the observed erosional escarpment, and its migration inland with time at a rate on the order of 1 km/10 yr. We find from the modeling that erosion at rift flanks and passive margins is fundamentally a non-linear pro-cess. The erosional development of passive margin topogra-phy has much is common with travelling wave solutions to non-linear diffusion-type problems, and to self-similar sto-chastic processes, such as diffusion-limited aggregation. We suggest that the fission track data record the thermal effects of erosional unroofing at rift flanks and passive continental margins. Models intended to explain the erosional develop-ment of continental margins must explain both the geomor-phology and the fission track observations as well.
