This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.

This paper examines the practical and economic benefits of using bulk emulsion explosives in underground development mining; compared to ANFO, ANFO derivatives and packaged explosives. The key economic benefit of bulk emulsion is the replacement of relatively high cost packaged explosives with a bulk product. Key practical benefits include water resistance, improved coupling of explosive, reduced toxic gas production, increased shock energy and improved manual handling through the use of bulk products. Each of the benefits is proven using a variety of measurements and field results in order to quantify them. Where possible, dollar values are determined so that the benefits can be shown to translate into savings for the mine operator. The results show that, despite the difference in price between ANFO and bulk emulsions, bulk emulsions are most capable of delivering the lowest total cost of blasting. The savings potential of the introduction of bulk emulsion systems can result in an improvement in drill and blast costs for a mine operator, or a significant increase in profit margin for a contract mining company.

In the past various systems have been used to plan the extraction of ore from block cave operations. These systems have varied from rather sophisticated models with empirical ægravity flowÆ rules applied to the very rudimentary models where only the recorded mined tonnageÆs have been accounted for against the available resource. The normal requirement of these models has been to only plan the movement of ground through the drawpoints. Little cognisance has been taken of the other parameters that affect the total mining operations. The intended purpose of the linear program planning system is to not only include the management, resource availability and geotechnical constraints, but to also include the mining rules. The paper will discuss the various constraints that have been considered, and attempt to illustrate where the system better serves the production system than previous ones. A brief technical discussion on the linear programming system is included.

A real Dorothy Dix title has been selec- ted for this paper. It has the advantage, however, of being capable of being interpreted in many different ways and hence I can select my own approach. You probably are thinking that this topic would be more appropriately handled by an Accountant. I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am not skilled in the sometimes mysterious ways of Accountants - likewise that profession frequently has difficulty in pinning down economists. We have our own strange ideas about profits, marginal efficiencies, cost/benefit analysis etc. What follows is in the main a mixture of two disciplines, probably in a form that few of the purists from either side would accept. Nor do I expect the reader to accept my own prejudices. The paper is designed to stimulate thought and discussion'on the subject. Emotive words such as "profit" and "loss" make for wide differences of opinion. At the time of writing there is a surprising degree of acceptance of the viewpoint that profits in Australia are too low and one is tempted to make this point of near agreement a starting Point.

This paper describes the ventilation analyses performed for the access tunnels at the New Level Mine project (NLMP) at CodelcoÆs El Teniente operation outside of Rancagua, Chile. This new mine is anticipated to reach a final production of between 137 and 180 kt/d. Production from the NLMP is scheduled to start in the year 2017. The main access tunnels (MAT) are approximately 9 km in length, with one for personnel and supply access and the second one for ore extraction through a conveyor system. These two tunnels are a critical component of the initial stage 1 development and will be constructed independently of the existing mine workings. The tunnels were originally designed to be constructed with two tunnel boring machines. However, later analyses changed the construction approach to a conventional drill and blast technique. Because the design included two mid-tunnel ramp-to-surface connections, conventional mining methods would allow for development of the tunnels with multiple working faces to achieve a more rapid schedule. This paper presents the initial baseline considered for the ventilation design and the optimisation methodology applied by Codelco to minimise the airflow and pressure requirements of the ventilation system. Modifications to the design resulted in the addition of strategic airways and raises that could provide a saving of approximately 1 MW, when compared to the original design.CITATION:Acu±a, E, Alvarez, R, Wallace, K and Prosser, B, 2013. Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

FOR some reason there is not any extensive literature in print on the electrolytic refining of copper, although the method is in general use in America and Europe. In Australia there are but three plants in existence one small one at Wallaroo, in SouthAustralia; one at Lithgow and one at Port Kembla the last two being in New South Wales. The largest of these is the Port Kembla plant. It is also the most modern, and embodies all the latest appliances and improvements of electrolytic practice.The plant and methods about to be described is that at Lithgow, with which the writer was associated for some years, and the experience gained there may be of interest. Electrolytic refining of copper is one of the simplest operations of metallurgy, but, like all metallurgical operations, it requires constant attention and a large amount of common sense. The man in charge should be endowed with an insatiable curiosity as to why certain things are occurring, and an instinct of cleanliness, whichmy first mentor in chemistry, Mr W A Dixon, once impressed on me was better than godliness.

Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Although the geotechnical block model proved difficult and complex to construct, the resultant product has seen successful integration of geological and geotechnical data into mine planning providing higher resolution of critical parameters for local mining areas.CITATION:Clark, J M, Passmore, M and Poznik, N, 2017. Since the commissioning of the BHAS Copper Plant in 1984 the copper electrowinning operations have not fully met expectations. During 1988, a laboratory scale electrowinning unit was constructed to enable an investigation of the effects of process parameters on copper cathode deposition and quality. The process parameters investigated were copper concentration, acid concentration, current density, electrolyte temperature, electrolyte flow, electrolyte impurities and electrolyte additives. The findings of this research program indicate that there is an optimum cathode deposition morphology which results in good quality copper deposits which have improved stripping characteristics. All of the process variables investigated influenced the copper deposition and therefore it was necessary to delineate a suitable operating envelope for the copper electrowinning. As a result new standard operating parameters in electrowinning have been implemented which has enabled the production of higher quality copper cathodes with improved stripping characteristics.

This paper focuses on a case study at a base metal mine located in a tropical semi-arid area of Western Australia (WA). It is demonstrated that understanding the geochemical nature of the mine tailings forms an integral part of innovative management strategies developed throughout the life-of-mine (LOM) when planning for mine closure. The tailings are currently stored at an above-ground valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF) and one option for long-term management under consideration is leaving the tailings in situ at mine closure and covering using the concept of an enhanced æstore and releaseÆ cover system.Extensive geochemical and mineralogical studies have found that the geochemical behaviour of the tailings in the TSF is significantly more benign than initially predicted. The sulfide content of the tailings is primarily pyrrhotite, which can be acid-forming, acid-neutral or acid-consuming depending on a number of factors including redox conditions. Tailings pore water at depth is pH neutral with excess alkalinity, low concentrations of dissolved metals and elevated sulfate concentration.Recent geochemical tests on tailings samples indicate that a reduction in the acid potential and a corresponding increase in the neutralising potential of the tailings, through partial removal of pyrrhotite at the ore processing stage, has the potential to further reduce the long-term risk of potential impact to the environment from any TSF seepage. The current work program investigates whether partial removal of pyrrhotite is feasible and secondly, whether this approach is necessary to produce a significantly better outcome at mine closure.CITATION:Robertson, A M, Kawashima, N, Smart, R St C and Schumann, R, 2012. Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

The development of paraprofessional courses in metallurgy and related disciplines, by the Department of Technical and Further Education in New South Wales, is outlined in this paper. The changing nature of metall- urgical educational requirements is summarised, and various attendance patterns discussed. The potential advantages of the sandwich system of College attendance, to the more distant sectors of the mineral processing and metallurgical industry is outlined. Some of the likely future trends in technician education are presented. These include the need to respond to the changing expectations of technician employers, as shown by industrial surveys, the role of experiential learning, the need to integrate courses so that students can build on prev- iously completed courses, the possibility that future technicians will require a multi- disciplinary background and the provision of easier access to technical college facilities by potential students and industries.

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

Faculty at the University of Missouri-Rolla have carried out research on the application of high pressure water jets as a means of excavat- ing coal for over 15 years. During the course of this time, a number of different concepts have been explored--the most recent of which has been to use high pressure water jets as a means of extinguishing an underground coal seam fire. This paper will examine the use of some of these technologies and will consider the results as a basis for discussion of further applications of water jets in the future. The structural pro- perties of coal which distinguish it from other adjacent geotechnical material and provide a considerable advantage to water jet cutting, will also be presented and the advantages of using this tool will be discussed.

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

The introduction of large diameter drill holes and mass firings in underground metalliferous mines has led to an increase in the number of reported sulfide dust explosions in Australia and overseas. Adaptation of the coal mining technique of using limestone to inhibit or prevent dust explosions has not been entirely successful as the development and inhibition of a sulfide dust explosion is somewhat different from that of a coal dust explosion. Tests were carried out on two pyritic ore samples, sulfur contents of 41 and 36 per cent, in 8 and 20 litre explosion chambers to evaluate the effect of the addition of limestone on the maximum explosive pressures developed and rates of pressure rise. Significant values were obtained in both chambers with dusts containing 60 per cent ore and 40 per cent limestone. The percentages of limestone required to inhibit the pyritic dusts were considerably higher than those values generally accepted by the mining industry and the current methods used to inhibit sulfide dust explosions should be re-evaluated.

The main tectonic elements in Myanmar are a late Mesozoic and Cenozoic magmatic arc system in the west, repeated in northern Myanmar by more than 300 km of dextral movement on the Sagaing Fault, and the back-arc continental region affected by early and late Mesozoic orogenies, in the east. Historically most lode gold production has been from latest Cretaceous high-grade mesothermal veins and derived placers in the Wuntho and Tagaung-Myitkyina segments of the magmatic arc. Placer deposits in the Ayerwaddy River north of Myitkyina are currently worked by more than 100-bucket dredges. South of Wuntho, the magmatic arc and Pegu Yoma fold belt host epithermal gold with associated As, Sb and Zn in mid-Tertiary marine sediments. MyanmarÆs most productive lode gold deposit, the Kyaukpahto mine, lies within a north-trending district east of the magmatic arc and north of Mandalay. Here mineralisation and associated jasperoidal silica occur in Eocene sandstones and Permian and Triassic carbonates. Possibly this district continues southeastwards, across the Sagaing Fault, as sediment-hosted Sb Au and locally skarn Au mineralisation within a 1100 km long fold-thrust belt. Also present in the back-arc region are sandstone-hosted Au Cu in a Palaeozoic slate belt, and gold and stratabound gold-base metal mineralisation in the medial metamorphic belt. While untested targets remain in the magmatic arc, particularly for high sulphidation Au, the best potential is clearly within the back-arc slate and fold-thrust belts in the western part of the Shan Plateau and in northeastern-most Myanmar.
