Many coal mine operators have responded to economic pressures by massive investment in machinery to reduce unit costs. To sustain the increased production which must justify the expenditure it is essential to know the resource in great detail months or even years in advance of its extraction. The required detail includes variations in composition and any lateral disruptions to the seam which night affect production. As Wilson (1985) has pointed out, a day's production loss can mean half a million dollars income forgone, and an unexpected major fault can mean a shutdown of weeks. Traditionally, seams were probed by surface drilling on (typically) 250 or 500m centres, and by horizontal drilling from sithin'the seam. Core was analysed chemically. The new generation machinery cannot tolerate the risk attendant on such widely spaced sampling, but the costs of much closer sampling rapidly become prohibitive.

The concept of hydro power in deep mines is based on the exploitation of the hydrostatic head that can be gained as refrigerated cooling water descends in shaft pipe columns from the surface, to provide hydraulic power for machines at the working face. This paper describes the work done on two important aspects of the controlled distribu-tion of the high pressure water within a mine, namely the control of pressure under normal operating conditions, and the control of flow in an emergency situation following a pipe breakage. Suitable methods of control have been determined using theoretical techniques to model the steady and unsteady flow behaviour of the water in the pipeline, and taking into consideration the environmental constraints on the types of control devices that can be used. The preferred approach is one in which the high pressure water itself is used as the control medium. The control valves themselves can be fairly conventional in design, but in the case of pipe break protection it is shown that a less conventional approach based on the use of a hydraulic fuse gives improved control performance.

Many heap and dump leaching processes involve competitive, complementary and sequential reactions between multiple minerals and reagents. A comprehensive model has been developed to deal with these complex chemical interactions which is based on diffusion control of the reaction rates. All of the mineralogical and chemical data are obtained from representative samples of the ore or the chemical literature. These properties have been incorporated in a general way, making the model applicable to a range of ore-process systems. The simulation is used to predict the absolute reaction rates and can be used before any leach tests are carried out on the ore itself. The applicability of the model and some tests of its validity are presented.

This paper is concerned with the tracking of particles in the froth phase of an aerated water/glycerol mixture. Experiments have been carried out in a specially designed laboratory flotation cell that allows formation of a deep froth. Phosphorescent tracer particles of various sizes were injected into the centre of a froth column where they were excited by ultraviolet lights, positioned at the back and front of the column. The motion of particles was captured on a digital camera with a green filter. The images from the digital camera were then transferred to a computer and an image analysis program was used to convert the colour intensity to the concentration of particles at each location within the froth. The tracer technique was used to determine the dispersion of hydrophilic particles and the variation of the concentration of solids with axial and radial positions.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

SAG Mill Grinding Design Versus Geometallurgy - Getting it Right for Competent Ores Smarter processing for the future, in the area of SAG mill design involves accurate grinding test data, completing final mill design in less than three months, and at a cost of less than US$80 000. More detailed variability testing on the other hand takes longer, is more expensive, and is used for throughput optimisation for an existing or newly purchased mill. This paper shows that SAGDesignTM testing is excellent for new SAG plant design due to relatively low cost per test and the ability to do more testing for a limited budget on larger projects. It also briefly examines a way to develop proper geometallurgical ore hardness information on every block in the mine model, from the more detailed analysis data.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. The major heavy industrial consumers of limestone are the cement, lime'and steel ind- ustries. Each of these requires large quantities of cheap raw material. Other ind- ustries such as glass and chemical manufactur- ing are significant consumers and agricultur- al and constructional activities provide additional demand which is usually more local in its occurrence. Limestone is widely dis- tributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport con- siderations render most deposits of no economic value. Among deposits which are sufficiently close to the major metropolitan markets many must be rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major.develop- ment, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. The major producing locations are sit- uated in a variety of geological environments. Most have limited reserves and require partic- ular attention to quality control. Planned extraction programmes based on detailed geo- logical investigations enable not only satis- factory grade control but also permit, by the adoption of appropriate quarry procedures, the use of sub-grade material, thus optimis- ing utilisation of the available reserves.

The South Middleback Ranges (SMR) operation involves the develop- ment of iron ore resources at the Iron Duke mine in the South Middle- back Ranges to replace the Iron Baron mine whose reserves are nearing depletion. The Iron Duke mine will be developed by contract to the stage where it can continue operation at full production when Iron Baron is closed. As part of the mine planning of the operation a GPSS computer simulation model was written to determine equipment requirements. The model simulated the operation of the mine with trucks transporting ore and waste to the appropriate destinations and producing a blended product in the stockpiles. A loader and two trucks would transport ore from the stockpiles to the crusher for one shift per day. The simulation shut the operation down at crib, morning tea, shift change and weekends, and also on the third shift each day. It also modelled operating delays. The results gave equipment operating hours and total output of each material type. The model was modified to produce different outputs from the mine and could be used to determine the most productive shift arrangement.

A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

On 23 May 1977 the Hon Mr George Gair announced an amalgamation of the present Ministry of Energy Resources, the New Zealand Electricity Department and the Mines Department. Hopefully it will prove to be the solution of many national problems in energy planning and policy making, in energy distribution and use, and energy discovery and production. The name of this new giant is the Ministry of Energy which gives a firm indication of its future direction. For those amongst us involved with mineral energy resources the establishment of this new department must be encouraging. For those amongst us who are involved in non-energy side of the mineral industry it is the very opposite. The loss of the Mines Department a year short of its centenary is a loss for the mineral industry without a doubt - but how much of a loss?

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. The procurement process for underground construction contracts, in particular those contacts involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs), is subject to many complex and inter-related variables, including national and local politics, public policy, community involvement and media attention û as well as strict environmental and legal requirements. Other restrictions include the time available to adequately investigate geotechnical conditions and viable technical options to determine the best construction methodologies û including selection of tunnel boring machine characteristics and, those construction means and methods suitable for the specific geotechnical and environmental conditions. The latter are, most often, quite imperfectly understood. æGetting it rightÆ implies that an optimal configuration û of machine type, characteristics and associated methodologies û can be found and successfully implemented for a particular project. æFrom the beginningÆ implies that the lack of time issue can be successfully resolved. Within an international context this paper highlights a number of issues of concern which relate to tunnel procurement systems and the ways in which certain key processes are managed during planning, design and construction. The authors argue that there is considerable room for improvement in the way tunnelling projects are undertaken and an approach is discussed which has the potential for substantial gains in cost and schedule and reduction of risk. Savings, however, may only be fully realised if the new methods can be fully implemented by all parties involved. This, we believe, will require the rejection of ætraditionalÆ forms of management and procurement with associated changes in the roles and responsibilities of owner, engineer and contractor. Additionally, risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential cost and schedule control process which have, to this point, been underutilised by the underground construction industry.

The Mine Safety and Inspection Act, 1994 of Western Australia recognises the importance of ground control in underground mining. The recent safety performance of underground mining is summarised in terms of the most common causes of injury and fatal accidents. A review of current ground control practices is presented and the concepts of local and large-scale ground control are introduced. The need for a more systematic approach to ground control is considered to be directly related to requirement to improve safety performance. The new regulations will require that certain geotechnical issues be addressed during the life of a mine. To comply with the regulations it is suggested that a ground control management plan be developed for each mine. The geotechnical issues associated with the ground control management plan are reviewed and hazard recognition aspects discussed.

Coal exports are forecast to grow strongly, so that coal is likely to remain very important to Australia for the foreseeable future. However there is no sign that prices or profitability will rise of their own accord. Therefore the intense squeeze on costs will continue for the foreseeable future. This will mean lower manning, more outsourcing and probably an increasing rate of company attrition. As well, the political pressure from the greenhouse debate is only going to intensify and the pressure on the Federal Government after Kyoto is likely to be irresistible.

An exploratory study has been carried out on the applicability of pre-nucleated feed in pelletising operations. Measurements of the pellet quality parameters showed that iron ore pellets prepared in the above manner, generally meet the specifications required in international pellet traffic. Several potential economic advantages, such as reduced grinding power requirements, increased line productivity and shorter start-up periods, became apparent during the study.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet.
