The Lower Palaeozoic Woolomin Association is composed of chert and jasper (often radiolarian), siliceous argillite, the mafic volcanics with associated hyaloclastites, and occasional greywacke and limestone lenses. Several "Cyprus-type", conformable pyritic copper (+/- zinc and cobalt} sulphide lenses are spatially related to individual mafic volcanic units and manganiferous chert and/or jasper. The Association has been interpreted to represent an oceanic crustal remnant generated either in an island arc environment (Herbert, 1981) or at a divergent plate boundary (Scheibner and Glen, 1972; Leitch, 1974a, 1975) later to be obducted, or tectonically emplaced, into continental crust; the adjacent Peel Fault was considered to be the palaeo-obduction zone (Scheibner and Glen, 1972) and the associated alpine-type mafic/ultramafic complex, an ophiolite (Crook and Felton,1975).

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. It is proposed to consider a new access, mining and hoisting system for underground deposits, as an alternative to the commonly used decline or vertical shaft access. The proposed system offers fundamental improvements in gathering of exploration data, reduction of capital expenditure and significant savings in mine operating costs. The cost reductions are achieved through:superior orebody definition by Supersucker winzing on ore prior to the commencement of capital development; considerable reduction of capital development in waste; full capitalisation on all benefits of a raisebored excavation; introduction of rubber tyred skip and rubber tyred Mine Rapid Response Vehicle; introduction of simplified ore handling system and reduction of underground mobile diesel fleet; and introduction of minimum maintenance shaft concept. The system is applicable to deposits ranging from shallow, low dip angle, narrow vein, high-grade to bigger, massive type vertical mineralisations accessed from the surface, preferably from the bottom of an open pit; it is also suitable as a down dip extension of an existing underground mine. The system is highly conducive to mine automation and emerging trend aimed to increase the ratio of mined metal/mineral to mined waste. It offers substantial reduction in diesel exhaust gas emissions to the mine atmosphere.

The growth in the nickel market and the price increases predicted in 1970 have not mat-erialized. Several plants have been construct-ed, particularly to treat lateritic ores. A spectacular increase in cost of energy and the escalation of capital costs have led to severe economic difficulties on the part of many nickel producers. Several of the nickel prod-ucers joined together to form a Nickel Develop-ment Institute in 1984 with the prime objective of improving nickel markets. Most producers have taken exceptional action to cut overall costs as well as unit costs. Another organiz-ation made up of nickel producers, NiPERA, was established in 1980, to study and take action on problems of nickel in the environment and especially in the workplace.Ion exchange, and particularly continuous ion exchange, has been developed into a reli-able commercial unit operation in the last dec-ade. An example of how ion exchange combined with hydrogen reduction can be integrated into a Caron type reduction roast ammonium carbonate leach process for the recovery of nickel from laterites is discussed.

The program is based on an existing simulator, VNETPC and two experimentally developed relationships: (1) linearity between fan pressures and added regulator resistances and (2) a non- linear convex function relating the system air power and the fan operating Pressures.

Canberra is a planned city in which the natural environment, rather than existing development and land tenure, has until recent times at least, imposed the major constraints to development. Even redevelopment poses fewer problems than for most cities. Geological conditions have, therefore, played a significant role in determining its shape and layout. The Canberra experience has relevance for major new mining and engineering projects. The role of engineering geologists and geophysicists in Canberra's development is described, and the problems arising from the geological environment are illustrated by several case histories. Four aspects are addressed: pre-development urban geology; major engineering projects; resources evaluation, including groundwater; and post-development problem-solving. The Australian Capital Territory lies within the Palaeozoic Lachlan Fold Belt. Within the ACT the belt is composed of folded and faulted metasiltstones, metasandstones and acid volcanics, intruded by a major granitic pluton. Some limestone lenses occur. The region has been part of a land mass since Late Devonian times and landscape evolution has been very complex. Geological features of special geotechnical significance include deep but variable weathering, with slight to moderate weathering along faults to at least 70 metres depth in places, and consequential foundation problems; close jointing; weathered limestone lenses with solution cavities containing clay and water; confined aquifers containing artesian water in scree deposits flanking hills; the presence of pyrite; and poor quality and low volumes of groundwater.

A brief description of viscosity measuring devices used in Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants is given, including a new On-line viscometer system. The various factors which affect suspension viscosity are identified. The effect of temperature variation on viscosity and viscosity measurement is examined in detail. Practical problems in using a modified Stormer viscometer for laboratory testwork are noted. Likely problems of continuous viscosity measurements are also discussed.

DuPont is a chemical and energy multi-national of approximately 90,000 employees. Often regarded as the world leader in injury reduction and process safety management, DuPont operate 140 manufacturing sites around the globe. Conoco is a wholly owed subsidiary of DuPont which is involved in oil, gas and coal exploration.   Throughout this paper I will discuss DuPont statistics, developing a safety culture and training process as well as discussing possible short comings in the New Zealand safety focus. I will conclude with my recommended improvements and issues for New Zealand companies to focus on.   It is very difficult to compare DuPont and New Zealand statistics through lack of compatibility in recording methods and my ability to interpret ACC's Injury Statistics. However through considering DuPont's statistics, and comparing them to your own companies or departments, you will agree they are indeed impressive. I hope that by discussing DuPont's safety philosophy, and possible shortfalls within New Zealand Legislation many of you will find ideas and inspiration which will help you to further reduce your own injury rates.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. Drainage of gas has been practiced overseas for almost half a century. Peal advances in drainage of gas to combat high emissions became practicable in the late fifties and early sixties when the technology was standardised to use it under a variety of mining and geological conditions. Today methane drainage is practiced in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ibmania, U.S.S.R., China, Japan, Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. Australia entered the list of countries using gas drainage on 3rd March, 1980 when the first full scale gas drainage system was set up and commissioned at West Cliff Colliery to drain gas from the Bulli Seam. Methods used in Europe are different from those used in North America, Japan and Australia mainly because of the different mining methods and also because of the limited number of seams under extraction, relatively new coal fields, and comparatively larger distance between the seams. In spite of the difference in the technique, the basic aim is the same and that is to improve ventilation and reduce ventilation costs, alleviate dangerous gas accummulation, overcome outburst hazards and ultimately make mining safer and more efficient. The Lennard Shelf Operations owned by Western Metals Ltd evolved from the Cadjebut Zinc Lead Mine (BHP) in August 1994. Original production of 0.5 mtpa will rise to 2.0 mtpa at the end of 1998. Employees work a multiple of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) rosters from the Kimberley region and the WA Capital. The three underground mines, treatment and services departments will employ approximately 300 people by the end of 1998. The expansion of the Lennard Shelf Operations as a remote mining location was based on a fresh look at management systems and employee rosters which were generated from many years of mining experience. This paper will endeavour to summarise these experiences and analyse some of their outcomes. Dealing with several mining methods, engineering difficulties, logistical problems and climate extremes, the Lennard Shelf Operations has managed social/employee issues with excellent results. Much time has been spent to get this correct for the Lennard ShelfÆs own set of circumstances. Employees and associated companies must expect continuing changes and improvement as Western Metals strives to continually improve its management systems and employee rosters.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

The Ellalong Colliery has been the first to mine the Greta Seam using the longwall method. Analysis of data from geotechnical monitoring has pointed to the role of the strong, massive sandstones of the Branxton formation in the development of loads on the powered supports and pillars. Failure of the sandstone intermediate-roof has been related to first-weight and periodic weighting, measured on the supports, using simple "voussior" analysis. Stress changes, including triaxial components measured in the barrier and chain pillars, have been compared with 2- and 3- dimensional numerical models. The applicable range of the models for the prediction of pillar loads under the strong roof is discussed.

The underground mining of a narrow vein hard rock orebody is a capital and labour intensive method of extraction. Due to the nature of underground mining it is difficult for higher level managers to physically see the efficiencies and inefficiencies of a particular method. Extraction methods and sequencing often need to be altered from the original planned methods as a result of mine developent, providing more in depth information as it progresses. As a result of these issues contract mining of these orebodies is common practice. There are several types of contract structures for the purpose of underground contract mining with many complex permutations of them that reflect the different needs of each individual company and orebody. The different contracts are arranged dependent on the mining companyÆs desire to transfer or, alternatively, embrace risk. This presentation gives a brief overview on these different methods and their various advantages and limitations with regard to small scale and narrow vein underground mining. With respect to these different contracting methods, the presenter reviews the mutual growth benefits of emerging partnering opportunities, specifically with regard to smaller explorers exploring and developing prospective mining tenements. The specific advantages to small explorers include the resource flexibility and speed of project development that private mining contractors can provide. Given the contracting methods that are available, there is potential for small private mining companies to gain minor stakes in major projects and major stakes in medium sized projects by employing innovative contracting solutions to provide mutual benefits to the parties. There is today widespread concern about the future of the mining industry. In attempting to understand the underlying causes the paper probes in some detail, the long term structural changes affecting growth of metal demand and the development of excess mineral supply capacity. This examination reveals an industry characterised by an unfavourable combination of high barriers to exit and low entry barriers. While rising entry barriers are expected to herald some improvement in the profitability of mining over the next decade, this adjustment is likely to be slow and will require a more economically rational assessment of the industry by corporations and governments Alike.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

Most Geologists have a well rounded knowledge of the exploration phase and those who have worked as mine geologists have an understanding of the production phase. Few have had exposure to the development and the construction phases. Even fewer have had the experience of closing a mine, disposing of the plant and equipment, carrying out the final cleanup and making the area safe and environmentally acceptable.During the various phases of exploration, the geoscientist gains a wealth of non-geological information which can be of considerable value to engineers and technicians in the feasibili-ty, development, operation phases and finally the closure of a project. Such basic controls as surveys, adopted assay sample lengths and the location of items of infrastructure during exploration, may continue to affect the project through its entire life. Thus the geologist's responsibilities extend well beyond the explo-ration phase of a project.

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus, others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in tile world industry.   It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.   Almost all offshore jurisdictions were considered to be high risk compared to the safety of home - I recall the extreme difficulty I encountered in the mid 1980s in endeavouring to persuade a Board to joint venture into an attractive gold opportunity in South East Asia.   One of the problems inhibiting the offshore development of the Australian mining industry was that some mining companies had had unfortunate experiences offshore. Others had heard of those who had had unfortunate experiences offshore and, as such, 'offshore' gained a bad name and the more risk averse boards and. management of the time simply put the whole idea into the 'too hard' basket.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

There is an increasing demand for refrigeration as mines progress deeper. Mine refrigeration plants have special requirements in terms of their duty and application. There are no national or international standards applicable for the testing of these plants. There have been numerous examples of plants failing to meet their required nominal capacity, but with the plant owner being unable to enforce the design duty on the manufacturer, due to a failure to unambiguously specify testing or accepting criteria. This paper discusses some of the reasons for performance shortcomings and describes a methodology for developing and specifying performance criteria, when inviting design and/or construction tenders, and a method of performance and acceptance testing once the plant has been built and commissioned. These guidelines encompass the full range of performance duties expected from a mine plant, including stable operation at maximum and minimum plant capacity, and under the various combinations of extremes of high and low condensing and evaporating pressures. A description of a methodology for developing a computer-based mine refrigeration plant model is also presented as part of the performance testing criteria. The methodology is illustrated with reference to the actual performance and acceptance testing process used on the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler (R67) at the Enterprise mine at Mount Isa, Australia.
