This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width. A range of materials are treated in zinc fuming processes to recover metal values and produce benign slag waste products. The selection of the optimum process conditions in these various technologies can be greatly assisted by the use of a chemical thermodynamic model of the system. In this paper the effects of slag chemistry on the liquidus temperatures, subliquidus phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties are described by a FACT model of the ZnO-PbO-FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 system. In addition new experimental data on the effect of Al2O3 on the liquidus are presented. The implications of these findings for plant practice are discussed.

A number of forecasting methods are available to mine management to help predict the most likely outcome of some particular event thus enabling management to make more cost effective decisions. Three general classes of models can be used to predict future events qualitative, structural and time series, the most effective method in most cases being time series. Time series methods can be applied to predict future events from a series of past observations. Various time series techniques are reviewed with a comparison of their relative advantages and disadvantages.

Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

The planning, design and construction of a service tunnel, under a major arterial road between two hospitals are described. The multiple uses of the tunnel combine to provide a favourable cost-benefit ratio for the tunnel as part of a rationalisation of services between hospitals. The driven tunnel provides economic, program and approval advantages over that of a cut and cover construction. The cross sectional shape of the tunnel was determined during feasibility studies by the degree of weathering of the Silurian mud- stones, the shallow cover and the proposed excavation equipment as well as the functional requirements. The site investigations covering geotechnical, building, noise and level surveys provided input to the design documentation and construction phases. Monitoring of settlement levels and primary support stresses during early construction stages confirmed the adequacy of the proposed tunnelling methods and support to be used adjacent to the major building foundations. The 140 metre long tunnel was success- fully completed in April 1980 at a cost of $650,000.

The coal under the ridgeline is the most valuable part of the known reserve at Solid EnergyÆs Stockton Opencast Mine. Some ridgeline mining had been attempted in the past with mixed results. Solid Energy recognised that significant project planning was required in order to overcome the formidable technical issues associated with mining the area. It also recognised that the local community also had concerns about the potential impacts of this work including the visual impact of changing the topography of the ridgeline and the nearness of the Department of Conservation estate.   This paper outlines some of the risks and challenges that were faced and the management approaches that were adopted to address them.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

This paper presents an overview of a technology package developed by BHP for locating discontinuities in coal seams using an in-seam seismic (ISS) exploration technique. The technology package includes instrumentation, data processing software, field procedures, numerical modelling and interpretation know-how. The technology developed has proved to be highly successful; features such as faults and dykes, not detected by other methods, have been delineated. Using equipment specifically designed for underground use, surveys are carried out quickly and at low cost. More than 30 ISS surveys have been conducted by BHP in Australia. Substantial savings in production revenue have been realised in situations where ISS has identified mining conditions which would have impeded longwall operations. Case studies of several ISS surveys are described in the Paper.

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

Industrial minerals and rocks (alternat ively called non-metallic minerals) are those- which are economically important because of their desirable physical or chemical properties rather than their metal or energy content. They are divided into nine classes: structural, pig- ments, process aids, ceramics and refractories, chemical source minerals, abrasives, foundry minerals, gem stones, electrical minerals. Development of deposits is influenced by the dominance of marketing,by the required range of products, the-need for specialized process- ing, place value, and the transportation and distribution of high-bulk, low-cost commodities. Evaluation is different from that of base metals because of differences in geological occurrence, sampling methods, testing, treatment, placing a money-value on the material and the importance of export markets.

Commercial operation of the Sherritt Gordon process in Australia for the leaching of nickel sulphides has promoted an investi- gation of the factors which influence extraction kinetics. This portion of the investigation has been directed towards the physical and chemical nature of the concentrate and the physical evi- dence of the mode of extraction. Details of the particle size distribution, mineral composition and chemical composition are given. The dis- tribution of various minerals in different size fractions and magnetic fractions is discussed. An electron microprobe was used to determine the composition of individual grains in the concentrate. The solid residue from an ammonia oxi- dation leach was subjected to microphotograph- ic examination, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning by an electron microprobe. Clear evidence was obtained for a shrinking core mode of kinetic extraction with an amorphous iron oxide product layer contrary to previous reports that the latter is pseudomorphic with the original mineral.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The morphological changes that gold undergoes during transport in gravel-bed rivers are a function of transport distance in particular, as well as bedload material, river gradient and velocity, and bed roughness. Gold size, shape and outline are modified by abrasion, flattening, folding and breakage during transport. The resultant morphological characteristics can be used to predict source types, source location and transport distance, as well as the origin and dispersal patterns of gold in ancient placers where the transport history is unknown.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. Dust emissions from mining, material processing and ship loading operations (fugitive dust sources) are an environmental issue of increasing concern to both government regulators and the community. The main concerns relate to potential amenity, health and environmental impacts from the emissions. Therefore it is imperative that mining/ processing operations, as part of their overall environmental management, reduce fugitive particulate emissions to as low a level as is practicably possible. This technical paper outlines the mechanisms that lead to fugitive particulate emissions, the importance of understanding the exact cause of fugitive emissions, monitoring methods that can be used to quantify the emissions from specific sources, the use of atmospheric dispersion modelling in dust management and innovative dust management strategies including predictive meteorology and proactive management.

Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

Commencing early in 1975, Saraji Mine in Central Queensland will product 3.56 million tonnes in the first year and then 4.57 million tonnes annually for the Japanese and European markets. The coal will be mined from a series of pits separated by corridors which will be mined at a later date. Through the corridors flow regional drainage structures and power lines. Relatively easy areas will be mined initially to assist the cash flow and to minimise start-up difficulties. For ease of scheduling it is desirable that pit lengths exceed 3 000m but this will not always be possible. Ramps were designed using 1 200m spacing and 5 per cent gradient as optimum but modified to suit specific conditions. One ramp will be in the end of each pit nearest the ROM hopper and stripping will commence from this end. The advantages so gained are shorter haul distances, immediate access to the coal after stripping and simplification of the excavation of the first ramp. Haul road location was defined by the minimum present value of construction plus operating costs. In the Massif du Sud ophiolite complex platinum group elements occur predominantly as ultrafine-grained inclusions of rutheniridosmine, laurite and iridosmine. These form primary inclusions less than 5 to 10 um in diameter within chromite in podiform chromitite fringed by dunite, and emplaced subsequent to solidification of the host harzburgite. There is no specific association with trace inclusions of transition metal sulphides. The crystallization of then: Ir. Os and Ru minerals may have occurred concomitant with hromite, perhaps related to more reducing conditions produced by crystallization of the chromite. The Ir, Os. and Ru show pronounced fractionation from Pd, Pt and Rh expected to be also present in the mantle source rock. The dunite shows evidence of metasomatic origin from adjoining harzburgite, and the possibility of selective crystallization of the Ir sub-group elements suggests that Pd, Pt and Rh may have been transported elsewhere.
