The lead concentration of flotation feed ore slurries is determined using two ?-ray absorption gauges mounted directly on a 6 in. diameter flotation feed pipeline. One gauge is a conventional "density" gauge using CS137. The other is a "lead-sensitive" gauge, which depends on the preferential absorption. by lead of 225 key y-rays resulting from Compton backscatter of CS137 y-rays.Gauge outputs are combined using an analogue computer the output signal of which is directly proportional to the lead concentration of the pulp. The accuracy of measurement of the pulp lead concentration is ± 3·6 per cent for ore slurries with lead concentrations in the range 0'07-0·16 g/c.c. and pulp densities 1.43-1.60 g/c.c.This paper sets out the development of the technique and details are given of the two experiments (1964, 1966) conducted in the plant at North Broken Hill Limited. The installation of the two-gauge system inthe plant during May 1968 is described. Details are given of the calibration technique used and the results obtained.

Perilya Broken Hill, from its inception, has budgeted for more than 2.0 million tonnes per year from the Southern Operations. This tonnage was planned to come from in excess of 100 stopes per year in a remnant mining environment with numerous mined voids and consequent mining challenges. To mine an average of two stopes per week requires patience, flexibility and detailed knowledge to best manage the potential risks and hazards. The evolution of the Perilya Broken Hill Mine Planning Process has necessitated the establishment of a process to identify and manage these risks during the planning stage in a reliable but efficient manner. This process is to ensure that vital steps for each stope are not missed, and that each personÆs work can be tracked by other members of the team. This paper outlines the planning process from resource to stope closure.

The paper briefly discusses the benefits to proponents of a formal environmental assessment process. It is argued that any process should be fair, cost effective and efficient, involve all affected parties, and should identify important issues at an early stage. The paper outlines the procedure used in Victoria, and the ways in which it attempts to address the above criteria.In conclusion the paper discusses progress towards a national approach to Environmental Impact Assessment. This is currently being pursued by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (lMR) separators. The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.   The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

The Prince Lyell Mine has been the major production source at Mount Lyell since under-ground mining commenced in 1972.Three lifts of stopes have been mined to date, with the fourth, the 40 Series lift, to commence production this year. As the mine has progressed deeper, the ore haulage system has evolved to accommodate the mine's economic circumstances while maximizing efficiency.In the first, or 10 Series lift of stopes, ore was removed from drawpoints by L.H.D. units and tipped directly into rakes of 7 tonne rail cars. The original concept for deeper stoping lifts entailed L.H.D.'s tipping into long ore passes, rail haulage, underground crushing and hoisting to surface via the No. 1 Shaft. The suspension of the No. 1 Shaft project in 1976, due to economic difficulties, lead to the intro-duction of diesel truck haulage of ore, initially via the internal Prince Lyell Decline and now to surface via the Main Decline.

With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

Sampling equipment was signed so that undersize samples could be htained from various locations along the length of the screen, thus providing information pout the quantity and size of particles passing òhro gh the screen at any point. "On 9 February 2014, bushfire embers landing on exposed coal in a disused pit at the Hazelwood mine in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley ignited a coal fire that burned for 45 days. The fire was the largest and longest burning mine fire to occur in the Latrobe Valley (Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry, 2016). Two Victorian Government Boards of Inquiry have been held into the Hazelwood mine fire. The most recent, in 2015, included consideration of the regulation and implementation of rehabilitation practice at Hazelwood and the other two brown coalmines of the Latrobe Valley (Loy Yang and Yallourn; Government Gazette, 2015).The 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry commissioned Accent Environmental Pty Ltd (Accent) to undertake a review of the financial mechanisms for mine rehabilitation and closure adopted in Australia and overseas (Accent, 2015). Specifically, Accent was engaged to identify ‘any practical, sustainable, efficient and effective alternative mechanisms to ensure rehabilitation of the mines as required by the [Victorian] Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990’ in accordance with Terms of Reference 10 (c) (Government Gazette, 2015).The review by Accent included consideration of a range of financial instruments such as bank guarantees, trust funds and insurance. It considered a number of financial assurance systems in operation in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, Canada and the United States. These systems included: full and discount financial assurance systems predefined liability proportion systems pooled fund systems the use of post-closure financial mechanisms such as trust funds (Accent, 2015).What lessons can be learnt from other jurisdictions? It has long been recognised that applications of the Net Present Value (NPV) investment decision making methodology can have serious deficiencies in situations where investment can be delayed and, once made, various options allow increases or decreases in the level of output. NPV valuation can undervalue the project if it does not incorporate future flexibilities or ""options"". It is important to realise that a proper valuation of a project (ie, valuation of its future cash flows) must incorporate an analysis of optimal future decisions involved in managing the project. Current valuation cannot be divorced from a consideration of future decision making. There is now a considerable amount of literature, mainly academic, identifying and exploring ways of remedying these deficiencies in the application of NPV. While the necessity of period by period analysis is sometimes acknowledged, little if any practical illustrative model building has been published to date, aside from algorithms using continuous time stochastic processes which deny access to the uninitiated.

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). Economic and environmental pressures are shifting the world balance of titanium dioxide production away from sulphate based. manufacture towards the more cost effective and cleaner chloride route. In the chloride process for titanium dioxide pigment manufacture, TiOz and other metal oxides in the feed ore are reacted at high temperature with chlorine in the presence of carbon. These gases are cooled after they leave the reaction zone, upon which solid contaminants precipitate and are substantially removed. The liquid titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation before again being vaporised and interacting with hot oxygen to form pigmentary titanium dioxide and regenerate chlorine for recycle. The base pigment is wet milled, surface treated (by coating with hydrous oxides of silica, alumina and others) and redispersed before packaging. Optical properties of TiO2 pigments are reviewed and the role of refractive index and particle size explained in brief. Pigment related factors affecting the opacity, colour, undertone, gloss and durability of coatings are examined with respect to manufacturing requirements. The superior performance of chloride based pigments is briefly reviewed.

The excavation of a tunnel through rock and mixed ground of basalt and silty clays presents a challenge to engineering organisations. Such was the situation facing the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) in constructing the 15.3 km, 5.5m dia. tunnel component of the new Western Trunk Sewerage System. The tunnel geology showed that there were two distinct components to the excavation - rock and mixed ground. By drawing on extensive experience in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's) used previously by the MMBW and using techniques developed for predicting TBM per- formance, a comparison of the options of drill and blast versus TBM was made. The conclusion was that TBM methods would provide the best solution to the problem. Tenders were called for the supply of a TBM. A performance specification was used to attract tenders offering designs which re- flected the state of the art on an internation- al level. Particular features required by the MMBW were included in the specification. The excavation planning and operation are described in this paper. The production achieved has shown that the TBM can very adequately handle rock excavation (best weekly production 167.9m). Extreme conditions of mixed ground with heavy groundwater inflows have been handled using an auxiliary thrust system to maintain gripper reaction through the soft ground encountered.

The influence of layering on the rate of heat transfer through a packed bed consisting of particles of two different sizes and heat capacities has been determined by measuring the heat front velocity through beds of quartzite particles and iron ore pellets. The heat front velocity through the layered beds was less than that through a bed consisting of a random mixture of the par- ticles. This is due to the formation of an interface in which the smaller pellets in one layer penetrate into the layer of quartzite Below.

The increased international focus on sustainable development and cost improvement, coupled with the unpredictability and adverse impact of droughts in Australia and globally, has highlighted the critical need for responsible management of water within the minerals industry. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles.
