And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently established an Industrial Transformation Research Hub in the area of iron ore, focused on iron ore characterisation, beneficiation, materials handling and end-use functionality. The research hubs are part of a new initiative aimed at building stronger relationships between industry and universities, while addressing issues of national significance. The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore will focus its attention on developing innovative approaches for creating enhanced value across the full value chain through the characterisation of different ore types, beneficiation and materials handling and transport. This hub brings together five industrial organisations and a research team formed from well-established research groups based at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources. These groups have a record of working closely with industry to create opportunities. Examples include new beneficiation technologies such as the Reflux Classifier for achieving gravity separation, the expertise of TUNRA Bulk Solids in materials handling and the Iron Making Centre at Newcastle, which is a capability maintained by BHP Billiton following the closure of its Technology Centre in 2009. The purpose of this paper is to provide an outline of the research hub and its objectives, some background on the research groups that now form the hub and an insight into the strategy adopted for developing and implementing new technologies. Solids suspension is important in the design and operation of mechanical flotation cells, and is a necessary precondition to particle collection. Most of the fundamental hydrodynamic research that incorporates some aspect of solids suspension was done by Arbiter, Harris, and co-workers, or Schubert and co-workers. However, a need for research into solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells exists, since very little has been done since the late 1980s; a time that also coincides with the advent of round mechanical flotation cells and the subsequent dramatic increases in maximum flotation cell sizes. In this work, concentration profiles and critical impeller speeds, Njs, were measured in a 0.124 m3, round cell fitted with a 0.150 m, Bateman impeller mechanism. Two solids size fractions (75 - 106 and 150 - 250 ¦m) were tested, in ungassed and gassed conditions (JG = 0, 1 cm/s) and at various impeller speeds (300 - 900 rpm). The effectiveness of solids suspension was quantified in three ways in terms of extent of off-bottom solids suspension, suspension height (extent of solids distribution), and variation within the solids distribution, which together present a complete quantitative picture of solids suspension and distribution within the cell. Consistent trends were found when these effectiveness criteria were considered against relative impeller speed, in terms of percentage of critical impeller speed, N/Njs. Off-bottom solids suspension is complete at or above 100 per cent of Njs, with significant sedimentation occurring as the impeller speed drops below 60 per cent of Njs. Suspension heights consistently reached a level equivalent to 90 per cent of the tank diameter at the critical impeller speed, and dropped off significantly as N/Njs dropped below 60 per cent. The variation in the solids concentrations within the sampled profiles showed consistent trends in two-phase but not under three-phase conditions. The paper concludes that the critical impeller speed, Njs, commonly used in the design and operation of standard stirred tanks, is a very useful solids suspension benchmark for describing all aspects of solids suspension in mechanical flotation cells and should be correlated to system conditions.

The compact BWE system set up in 1984 to mine ironsand dunes and the underlying ironsand-clay has been an effective high volume produc- tion unit for New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd at the Waikato North Head ironsand mine. The system utilising two compact S400E (0 & K) Bucket Wheel Exca- vators and a single shared Beltwagon for transfer to the shiftable bench conveyors replaced a fleet of mobile elevating scrapers when the produc- tion requirement was increased by a factor of six. A key factor in favour of the BWE system was the economic advan- tages of low unit costs for both manpower and electrical energy.

A programme of testing and evaluation has been in progress at Isa Mine for the last four years with the objectives of rationalising ground support practices, improving installation quality and increasing productivity of ground support functions.Numerous innovations have been successfully implemented. These include the introduction of swellex rockbolts as the major form of temporary support, the use of splitset rockbolts as the primary means of support for the hangingwalls of cut and fill stopes and the introduction of dowels with pumped cement for general long term support.The installation of swellex bolts has been successfully mechanised throughout the mine using Tamrock automatic rockbolters and Atlas Copco BUK 11R drilling rigs modified for this purpose.

The conventional transportation system in open pit, a to u.* itc:,~> truck., to carry the ore along the ramps. Normally, the transportation distance increases greatly as mining progresses deeper. A new approach to overcome the above disadvantage is to adopt a buried roadway by which ores is transported by conveyors from the mining area to the outside dump in the shortest distance so that the production efficiency is greatly increased. Maintenance of the buried roadway in a good working condition is the key factor that determines the success or failure of the proposed approach. This includes the determination of support load, types and structures of support and other related supporting measures. The crucial problem here is to effectively control the load applied on the buried roadway in a certain range that the ordinary support can stand. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical modelling and physical simulation testing using equivalent material, this paper studies effects on control of the support load by adopting certain measures, for instance reinforcing the surrounding rock and placing the extendable layer between the support and a rock mass. Furthermore, the influence of the dynamic load induced by the movement of heavy vehicles on the stability of the buried roadway is also investigated.

New Celebration Gold Mine is located 35 km SE of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in the Archaean Kalgoorlie-St Ives Greenstone belt. The leases total 119 sq kms and arepart of a joint venture between Newmont Australia Ltd (as manager) and Mt Martin Gold Mines N.L. Mining commenced in August, 1986 and is now producing over 115,000 ounces of gold per annum. A variety of gold mineralisation styles with a total resource of 23.5 million tonnes at 2.19g/t are associated with shear zones at New Celebration. Gold production is co-ordinated from 7 open pits with others planned to com- mence soon. A large scale underground trial mining operation has com- menced with a decline on the hanging wall of the main producing orebody, Hampton Boulder. Millfeed produced is classified on the stockpile according to grade and metallurgical performance and blended tomaximise throughput while main- taining grade through a CIL treatment plant currently operating at 1.7 million tonnes per year.

Fine-grained coal tailings slurry undergoes only limited settling and self-weight consolidation, and tends to remain slurry-like and unsuitable for conventional laboratory consolidation testing. In addition, constant rate of loading consolidation testing is more representative of the continuous disposal of tailings slurry into a tailings storage facility (TSF) than conventional step loading. The laboratory consolidation testing of coal tailings slurry under a constant rate of loading has been carried out in a purpose-built, large-scale, slurry consolidometer, instrumented with load cells and pore water pressure (PWP) transducers. In the slurry consolidometer, the rate of loading may be varied to represent the actual rate of rise of the tailings in the TSF. A slow rate of loading increases the test duration, while too fast a rate of loading may build up very high excess PWP, without achieving significant consolidation. For the particular fine-grained coal tailings slurry tested, the rate of loading in the slurry consolidometer is varied to access its effect on the development and dissipation of excess PWP. High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. Natural gas was introduced to the Melbourne reticulation system in April 1969 and since that date sales to industrial consumers in the Gas & Fuel Corporation of Victoria area of supply, have increased by over 50% This increase has occurred despite the fact that the areas in which the new fuel is available have been dependent on the progress of the conversion operation from manufactured gas. The half way mark for conversion was reached in May 1970. The reason for the adoption of natural gas by industrial users is usually the result of objective financial analysis leading to the conclusion that the new fuel will give the lowest overall production cost. Many factors are involved in such an analysis of which the price of the fuel is only one. Amongst other important elements in the cost calculation are:- -ò òò -(1) The effect of fuel on product quality (2) Maintenance and handling costs for alternative fuel. In addition to economic gains for the individual user, the use of natural gas should benefit the whole community through its effect on such things as, air pollution and overseas balance of payments.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and South Western Coalfields.The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal.Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each seam.The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Seam in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin collieries.A satisfactory correlation is achieved between vitrinite content and coke stability and hardness, enabling prediction of coke strength for Southern Coalfield coals.The use of vitrinite reflectance, as an indicator of rank, in addition to type to predict coke strengths is at present hampered by lack of data, particularly in the South Western Coalfield. Nevertheless, data available at present allow the use of both variables and give better correlations with coke strengths than type alone.A spread of comprehensive data across both coalfields will enable advance assessment of cokes produced from coals having known rank and type. Blending to a ranktype specification for optimum coke strengths would allow the best use of the coal reserves of the coalfields.

Paragenetic, fluid inclusion, stable isotope, and 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd isotope studies of the Mt Carbine tungsten deposit in North Queensland provide information on the sources of the mineralising components and record the history of fluid-rock interaction during the hydrothermal process. The ore minerals , wolframite and scheelite , are contained in quartz veins which post-date the major deformations in the Siluro-Devonian Hodgkinson Formation . Mineralisation was immediately preceded by the emplacement of the Mossman Batholith (280 ¦ 7 Ma). Two major stages of mineralisation are present and separated by a brittle fracturing episode . The stable isotope and Sr and Nd isotope data suggest that the ore fluids during stage I and most of stage II mineralisation were a mixture of magmatic water and non-magmatic water (connate or metamorphic) which had experienced a long residence time and had extensively exchanged with the sediments at high temperature. Subsequent mineralisation events were dominated by fluids of meteoric derivation with a short residence time. The data imply that other solutes, such as W, were probably derived in minor part from local country rock sources with the major contribution coming from a magmatic source related to the granite batholith.

An investigation into the causes of variable sulphur content in blast furnace metal produced at No. 4 blast furnace at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. was carried out. Theprogramme included an extended and detailed experimental study of a great number of the operating variables of the furnace, on a cast-bycast or four-hourly basis, over fourteen days.Possible causes of the variation were found in irregular operation due to sinter variability, and it was also clearly shown that slag conditions were most important in controlling sulphur contents of pigiron. Some decrease in sulphur variability was achieved, arising partly from this investigation, and it is hoped to try magnesia additions to modify slag conditions for better desulphurizing.INTRODUCTIONSulphur in pig iron is a problem common to many blast furnace operators throughout the world, but the direct causes and means of overcoming them are functions of the available raw materials, and are hence more particular to each plant and its operating practice. Sulphur in hot metal influences the steel-making operations, the rolling operations and the quality of the finished steel. The main problem associated with high sulphur in steel is "hot shortness", which leads to cracking of ingots and billets in rolling, to poor surface finish and to poor welding properties in the finished steel. Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread Uwleiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17-16 Ma. The north- to north- northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1,100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcano- tectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma.

Legislation up to the early 1950s prevented the mechanical extraction of pillars. The mines operating at that time had formed extensive areas of pillars. When permission for the mechanical extraction was gazetted, conventional equipment was employed for pillar extraction and generally using hand mining systems. The mid-fifty's saw the of continuous miners. These machines eliminated the disadvantages of conventional equipment and the necessity for multiple working places. Some new layouts for panels emerged; however, actual extraction methods of pillars still followed closely that of hand mining. During the early sixty's the extraction of standing or new formed pillars was undertaken by the "open-end lift" or a "split and lift" method.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. This resulted in a deterioration in metallurgical performance with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues at each concentrator. Investigations to determine the cause of the problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical Deterioration.

A mine site water balance is important for communicating information to interested stakeholders, for reporting on water performance and for anticipating and mitigating water-related risks through water use/demand forecasting. Gaining accuracy over the water balance is therefore crucial for sites to achieve best practice water management and to maintain their social license to operate. For sites that are located in high rainfall environments the water received to storage dams through run-off can represent a large proportion of the overall inputs to site; inaccuracies in these flows can therefore lead to inaccuracies in the overall site water balance.Hydrological models that estimate run-off flows are often incorporated into simulation models used for water use/demand forecasting. The Australian Water Balance Model (AWBM) is one example that has been widely applied in the Australian context. However, the calibration of AWBM in a mining context can be challenging. Through a detailed case study, we outline an approach that was used to calibrate and validate AWBM at a mine site. Commencing with a data set of monitored dam levels, a mass balance approach was used to generate an observed run-off sequence. By incorporating a portion of this observed data set into the calibration routine, we achieved a closer fit between the observed versus simulated data set compared with the base case. We conclude by highlighting opportunities for future research to improve the calibration fit through improving the quality of the input data set. This will ultimately lead to better models for run-off prediction and thereby improve the accuracy of mine site water balances.CITATION:Kunz, N C and Woodley, A, 2013.
