Agitation leaching data has generally not been analysed to extract the maximum amount of information that is available. Analysis of heap leaching systems has been developing over the last five years to include the underlying rate determining process. This has been found to be diffusion control for all copper leaching; irrespective of whether they are oxide or sulfide minerals. Extension of the diffusion model has enabled better scale-up protocols to be developed. Acid consumption in copper heap leaching operations has been found to be a first-order chemical controlled system. The analysis of the data is relatively straightforward. However the interpretation and scale-up is not as direct as for agitation leaching. The differences in the residence time distributions (RTDs) are required to properly account for the scale-up between test columns and field. The leaching of oxide copper in agitated systems has also been found to be diffusion controlled. However, there are significant differences in the control mechanisms. Initially the leaching control is the supply of acid to the mineral surface. This is limited by the diffusion through the surface boundary layer and is thus subject to the level of agitation. Higher agitation provides thinner boundary layers and faster diffusion rates. Similarly, higher grade material creates a thicker concentration boundary layer and relatively slower leaching. Acid consumption in agitated leach systems is also a first-order system. However, the interpretation of the RTD is easier from batch testing to continuous multiple CSTR series plant operations. Altering the method of acid delivery can significantly reduce acid consumption rates. Predilution of the acid minimises the local acid concentration near the addition point and can reduce the consumption by up to 50 per cent. Modelling of the combined leach rate(s) and acid consumption rates in agitated systems allows comparison of various leaching strategies and selection of the most appropriate. Similarly, the model allows the identification of economic limits to leach recovery; where the cost of acid consumption is greater than the value of the copper recovered. From this analysis selection of residence times for agitation leaching can be determined. The modelling tools are useful in identifying optimum conditions for the leaching process.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. The Porgera mineral deposit in Papua-New Guinea contains gold as finely divided, probably submicroscopic (1 um) particles dispersed in a pyrite sulphide matrix. Only 25-30% of the gold in pyrite can be extracted by direct cyanide leaching and fine grinding the pyrite does not increase gold extraction significantly. This work is concerned with the application of alkaline leaching at atmospheric pressure to oxidise the pyrite prior to gold recovery by cyanidation. The paper presents and discusses results of a comprehensive set of testwork using sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide alkaline media. Best results, at 60-70% gold extraction, were obtained with sodium hydroxide systems.

This paper presents a rationale for selecting appropriate support elements which combine to form a support system to maintain stability in mines subjected to both strainburst and the shaking that occurs from fault slip. The overall approach was developed during the 'case for safety' study undertaken to allow the then Beaconsfield Gold mine (now Tasmania mine) to resume development and production after the 25 April 2006 ground-fall and fatality that received worldwide publicity. Issues of the sometimes competing requirements of support element performance during dynamic loading are discussed and the need for support flexibility is contrasted with the usual high support element stiffness required when these are used to reinforce rock masses. An example is presented to show the steps and technical details required to design each component of a support system to counter the de-stabilising effects of seismicity.

Sulphide ion is a powerful poison in gold cyanidation, however, the detrimental effect is less severe in plant practice. This is thought to be due to the presence of depassivating elements in the ore, mainly lead. Trace amounts of lead can counteract the poisonous effect of considerable amounts of sulphide. The reaction is instantaneous and is likely to be a direct involvement in the electrochemical surface reaction. Lead addition cannot be regarded as an all-round cure when experiencing poor leach efficiencies. A possible beneficial effect depends on the mineralogy of the ore and has to be determined individually for every material.

"Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. Selective leach analytical techniques applied to surface geochemical samples in the search for deeply buried mineral resources gained popularity in the late 1990s. Several commercial assay laboratories introduced their own selective leach methods, adding to the few established commercial methods at that time. Many of these laboratories promoted their methods with orientation data showing favorable responses to both precious and base metal mineralisation, concealed beneath extensive thicknesses of overburden. However, many explorationists remain confused about the utility of these geochemical methods. This confusion is due primarily to the lack of objective orientation surveys over significant mineralisation, comparing all commercially available selective leach methods and to the lack of a creditable theory explaining the formation of these selective leach anomalies. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. An orientation survey was designed to fill the first void û an objective survey over significant mineralisation. With the help of 17 mining companies and assay laboratories, an orientation survey was conducted over five significant covered gold deposits in Nevada, USA , representing over ten million ounces of gold. Hopefully the results of this survey will help provide fuel for those working on the second void û a theory to adequately explain the formation of these selective leach anomalies.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. The influences on flotabilities of dolomite and magnesite with modifiers and influences on the function of collectors and modifiers with Mg+z Ca+2 were studied. The flotation results of artificial mixed mineral showed that using combined salified water glass and (NaPO3)6 as a modifier for magnesite-dolomite separation can obtain an excellent Selectivity.

The Martha epithermal Au-Ag deposit contains multiple generations of quartz veins with a range of textures. We examined: +        vein textures, +        crosscutting vein relationships, and +        the paragenetic sequence within the pit walls as well as a wide range of hand specimens. Samples include host rock, breccia, and veins, but these groups are not distinct; instead, they form a continuum.   Veins at Martha mine show a wide range of textures on a local scale; these textures also change significantly over both the lateral and vertical extent of the pit. Common textures include crustiform bands, comb quartz, colloform bands, platy quartz, massive quartz, drusy quartz, sedimentary textures and brecciation.   Vein grades relate to textures. Many textures, including crustiform, platy, cherty, and sedimentary textures display predominantly low grades, but some textures are linked with high grades, such as ginguro, massive and comb quartz where they are associated with visible base metal sulphides and/or electrum. Host rocks and most breccias are low grade, as most samples contain <2 ppm Au.

A simulation of the fluid flow, minera- logical and chemical aspects of in situ leaching is being developed for application to the recovery of metals from unbroken, naturally jointed rock. The fluid flow aspect has been developed. The rock is assumed to have a double-fracture property. A major joint set is responsible for bulk flow of solution, while a minor joint set, intersecting with the major set, allows the solution to contact the reactive minerals. The two-dimensional fluid flow through the major joint set is analysed by a streamline model for a particular well pattern. The other important components of the model are described briefly.

A simple apparatus for delivering pulverized coal as fuel to a SIROSMELT lance is described, and its performance in smelting tests is evaluated. Using the pulverized coal as fuel, the SIROSMELT furnace performed well in both oxidative copper smelting and reductive smelting (zinc fuming). In both cases the evidence suggests that part of the combustion occurred by indirect oxidation of coal particles entrained in the bath. Oxygen potential measurements made during the zinc fuming tests confirmed the general features of the the non-equilibrium mechanism for zinc fuming proposed by Richards and Brimacombe. The zinc level in the slag during continuous fuming was lower than was predicted using an equilibrium model.

DEFINING AN ECONOMIC TARGETExploration usually begins with the corporate goal of finding a minimum tonnage and grade of a selected mineral. Sometimes this is expressed more simply as a minimum quantity of contained metal without any indication of the desired grade or implied profitability. Such a goal is useful in the selection of exploration areas and the planning of initial drilling programs. However, it should be reviewed as soon as significant mineralisation has been identified. To make rational decisions about exploration expenditure, the potential return from a deposit must be estimated from the outset and re-esti-mated frequently.The potential return will depend on:1. The proportion of mineral which can be economically recovered from the deposit by mining (the mining recovery).2. The quantity of valuable constituent that can be recovered after dilution with waste rock during mining and losses due to incomplete metallurgical recovery.3. Expectations of price and markets.4. Capital and operating costs applying to the selected mining and processing methods, and to transportation and marketing. Increasingly, environmental costs and constraints must also be considered.

Radioisotope x-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for onstream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay.The radioisotope x-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

The Hail Creek coking coal deposits are situated in Central Queensland, inland from the port of Mackay. A joint venture of Australian and Japanese companies has been formed to examine the feasibility of developing these deposits for sale on the overseas markets. The project envisaged involves large scale mining operations and on site benefic- iation to wash the coal to marketable quality. Infrastructure items include a 140 kilometre railway to the coast, a port facility, and at Ilail Creek, power and water supplies, roads and communications, and accommodation for a substantial workforce. The need for town development and the responsibility for the development are established. The town planning implications of coal production at the rate of five million long tons of washed coal per annum from open cut and underground mines are considered. A procedure for estimating the size of the town is expounded and the town size is determined. The factors influencing site selection are explained and a site is suggested. A method of designing the town is described and comments are made on developmental aspects. Spaciousness and preservation featuring the natural environment will be the theme of the town development.

The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process is now well established in the South African gold industry, with a total of over I million metric tons of material being treated each month in six large plants. This tonnage is derived from ground ore, from filtered pulp, from calcine, and from reclaimed sand-tailings dumps. With this new process and the new large plants, those concerned with CIP are experiencing a learning process, since each new plant presents a different set of problems to be overcome. The knowledge and experience gained from these plants is being shared, and will be of benefit in the design and operation of new plants. The CIP process can be subdivided into the following unit operations: prescreening at a fine size, adsorption, acid-washing and elution, reactivation, and electrowinning. Results concerning each of these unit operations, which were obtained from pilot plants and from large-scale CIP plants in South Africa, are presented. The latest developments in each of these areas is summarized. Tables that are included as an appendix contain some information concerning the equipment in these new CIP plants plus operating results from some plants.

Dealing with Aboriginals and various others purporting to represent them has become part and parcel of exploration and mining in Australia, whereas 20 years ago it was not. The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The following paper is a summary of the social background to such dealings and a compendium of rules for the newcomer to this aspect of the resource industry.
