The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.

In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

Among the various methods of thick-seam mining already well-tried in practice longwall caving with extraction of a single slice, as thick as possible, abandoning the top and/or the bottom coal, seems to be the most suitable one for the Australian coal mining industry. The production units of the future should be equipped with heavy double-drum shearer-loaders, wide armoured conveyors, (with one or two central chains) and shield support. Material of this type has been developed for seams up to 6 m thick. Output figures of more than 6,000 tROM/d from a single face can be looked upon as a quite realistic expectation. The problems of co-ordinating such large production units with the whole layout of the mine are discussed. The factors to be taken into account in the planning work and for preven- tion of mine fires caused by spon- taneous combustion are dealt with. For economic reasons the highest possible utilization factor of the very expensive equipment must be aimed at. Furthermore, the seams or parts of seams to be extracted should be carefully selected.

Over the 40 years that the author has been engaged in the Australian underground coal mining industry, there has been a continuous improvement in safety performance as the sector has grown in size and productivity. The underground environment hosts many hazards with significant risk profiles that are kept in check by effective health and safety management systems that have evolved largely following major underground disasters. Observations are made on the changes observed for specific aspects of the underground coal sector, with particular reference to ventilation issues, and predications are made as to the needs of the future.CITATION:Robertson, B, 2013. In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre- Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth.The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than 2 micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Gold Fields Australia (Gold Fields) has identified that improving productivity through more detailed shift planning and operational control of mining activities is a key driver to the success of their business. The Hamlet mine was chosen as a pilot site to trial a system that would allow production engineers and shift bosses to align the execution of short-term activities with the longer-term goals of the organisation.Gold Fields partnered with Deswik to introduce an on-site, collaborative, web-based system to allow mine planners to quickly build-up a detailed, activity-based, shift schedule for the coming week from the 13-week plan. Multiple stakeholders could then review and alter the plan, and then track and manage the execution of the activities.The system is designed to be integrated with production data capture systems to allow tracking of progress towards completion for each activity, as well as to plan and monitor the equipment operating in the mine. Integration of systems allowed engineers to use the large quantities of production data being captured to make informed decisions in the operations environment.The system replaced a complex set of spreadsheets that required expert users in Gold Fields to maintain. By capturing the data in a central database, the planning process is transparent and historic data from the execution of activities is available for analysis to improve productivity in the future.The system has ensured that the highest priority and critical path activities for the business are completed at the right time, improving the efficiency of operations.CITATION:Deucker, E and White, A, 2017. The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have been identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a major mining development typically has to address various aspects of surface water management, including some which generally tend to be the more contentious: the diversion of rivers and creeks from areas disturbed by mining, and their rehabilitation; the effective management of disturbed area run-off via the collection, containment and treatment of contaminated water on site in sedimentation dams; the collection, containment and treatment of mine pit water; the decommissioning of surface water storages; final void water quality; and water discharge criteria. Environmental Impact Assessment processes for proposed mining developments in Australia at the state and commonwealth level usually involve a form of Initial Advice Statement (or Notice of Intent), Terms of Reference, an EIS, and a Supplementary Report (or similar) which responds to agency and public comment on the EIS. The EIS is used by approval agencies to decide the acceptability of the Project, and to set the conditions of approval. The conditions are often in the form of a state-issued æOperational LicenceÆ or similar. With mining, the initial approval at the EIS stage is often just a pre-cursor to various other planning related approvals, including obtaining a mining lease. Afterwards, mine plans and plans of operations must be submitted to government at various stages of the mineÆs life, ostensibly to provide the detailed mine planning over periods of one û five years. Despite all this additional planning and documentation beyond the submission of the EIS, government approval agencies are increasingly not satisfied with conceptual water management designs and commitments to an outcome (such as meeting a specified water quality standard) in the EIS. Agencies are also requiring sufficient water management design information to be convinced that the outcomes are achievable. To assist proponents of major mining developments, the Queensland Government has published Technical Guidelines for water management, and Environment Australia has published a æBest Practice Environmental Management in MiningÆ booklet on water management. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC. 2000) has published Water Quality Guidelines which provide an approach to water management, and provide receiving water investigation trigger criteria. So, what are the water management issues that are likely to be the subject of comment, debate and negotiation prior to the EIS being approved? and what commitments may a mining proponent have to make in order to convince the approval agencies that sufficient investigation and design has been provided? This paper provides some answers to this question, by reference to recent major mining proposals which the author has managed through state and commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment processes.

Magnetic anomalies in the Southern Coalfields have been subdivided into two characteristic types. Each type is attributed to a separate cause, one being basement structure, and the other near-surface igneous intrusions.Detailed geological mapping of the area and the ability to sample throughout the coalmines greatly assisted in this subdivision.The Triassic sequence contributes no magnetic effect of its own except to diminish the effect of sources within the underlying formations by raising the level of observation.Detecting the presence of igneous intrusions ahead of colliery working faces by magnetic observations within the coal mines may be of value in preventing accidents caused by gas outbursts and in planning the workings so as to avoid loss of production time.

FINANCE FOR EXPLORATION Two factors have basic importance in relation to the availability of finance: the apparent success of continuing exploration activity and tax concessions. It is not proposed to discuss the effect of existing tax incentives, as these have already been outlined and are generally accepted as being reasonably attractive; certainly not a deterrent to possible investors. However, it is obvious that the greater the tax incentives, the greater the amount of money that will be attracted, and the wider the number of people who can be brought into the pool. If, as is suggested, the chance of discovery is related to expenditure and effort, then the more money attracted, the better the prospects of significant finds. It is probably correct to assume that the largest expenditure in mining will come from, or be induced by, people expert in the field, people who are fully aware of the risks and benefits and perhaps making conservative decisions because of this awareness. Insofar as the general public is concerned, while in the first burst of enthusiasm it will frequently follow any promoter, in the long run it too will become more sophisticated and will strongly support only those promoters and companies of good repute and proven record.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In June 1958 four full faces were blasted, and in October 1958 full face grunching without prior cutting, Le. inducer shotfiring, was introduced in No. 1 Tunnel as a production feature. In large-scale mining, large-sized intermediate pillars, or block-pillars, are generated on the horizon or between closely located mines. These pillars are mined under high rock pressure that results from the stress concentration zones superposition from closely located working excavations. This problem becomes much more complicated if high tectonic stresses occur in the rock mass inducing a rock-burst risk situation. Mining experience gained in mining seven block-pillars at three Khibiny mines in Russia under the geomechanical situation like that described aboveÆ is discussed in detail. It has been shown how safe mine of block-pillars depends on their width, location relative to significant geological failures and uncaved rocks of the hanging wall, the order of pillar recovery, and application of special measures for rock mass stress relieving. Basing on the analysis of the mining experience and special scientific researches, the basic principles are worked-out for safe block-pillar mining under rock-burst prone conditions.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best ægrade descriptorÆ is discussed.

A numerical groundwater model was used to predict the nature of interactions between heavy mineral sands mining operations and the groundwater regime at North Stradbroke Island, Southeast Queensland. North Stradbroke Island is formed mainly of massive vegetated Cainozoic aged dune sands. Since the 1950s, a number of operations have mined rutile, zircon and ilmenite on North Stradbroke Island. In such mining operations, a dredge and an associated processing plant are floated in a pond either above or below the prime groundwater table The numerical model was based on the North Stradbroke Island Groundwater Management Model, developed in 2001 by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). This model was constructed using the modular, cell-centred, finite-difference groundwater flow model, MODFLOW, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The NR&M model was refined to improve model resolution and detail for simulating dredge mine paths. Of particular interest were: water table fluctuations induced by mining for the identification of slope stability risk; the optimisation of sand spear arrays supplying mine make-up water requirements; inflow and outflow rates to the dredge pond for overall mine water balance; and interactions with Eighteen Mile Swamp and water supply bores controlled by the Redland Shire Council (RSC). Depending on the water level in the dredge pond compared with the surrounding groundwater table, water either flows out of the dredge pond into the groundwater regime or from the groundwater system into the dredge pond. The MODFLOW river package (RIV) was utilised for the modelling study. Dredge pond movement was simulated using specialised software developed by Watermark Numerical Computing (WNC) to interpolate pond positions and map the dredge path to the model grid both spatially and temporally. As tailings placement affects the groundwater system through increased recharge, the MODFLOW recharge package (RCH) was utilised to simulate different recharge efficiencies. Long-term model predictions were made for the period from July 2002 to May 2021. Results of the modelling showed that exchanges of flow between mining operations and the groundwater regime could be effectively managed. The study provided valuable information which was used to develop an appropriate mine water management plan.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.
