The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

A vehicle-mounted radiation detector interfaced to a microprocessor called PRAM (programmable radioactive analyser mobile) has been developed to provide grade control for selective mining of a soft rock uranium ore. The grade of ore over which the vehicle passes is determined and indicated by several coloured lights to a pegman who walks behind the vehicle. Coloured pegs are then laid out to mark the uranium grade ranges on the floor of the mine pit. Comparison between grade ranges determined by the PRAM and by prior drilling and downhole logging at the Yeelirrie deposit, Western Australia indicate good agreement. Use of the PRAM decreases the cost, manpower and time required to grade extensive areas of a mine pit floor.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources, is reviewed. In heavily-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations, By contrast, in and areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Studies of 13C/12C ratios of carbon dioxide in seam gases and in secondary calcites show that 1. In mines prone to carbon dioxide outbursting, the source of this gas is external to the coal. 2. Faults draining reservoirs of magmatic or primary carbon dioxide, rather than intrusives, are the most likely points of entry of carbon dioxide into mines. 3. The higher the concentration of carbon dioxide in seam gas and the wetter the mine, the lower the likelihood of secondary calcite occurring as a filling in cleats, fractures etc. 4. A -role played by carbon dioxide in promoting outbursting may be the conversion of calcite to soluble bicarbonate, the removal of this in mine water and the subsequent weakening of the resistance of the bulk coal to stress.

The best long-term approach to exploration involves the use of extensive quality data and the integration of many different factors, methods and techniques. The successful exploration manager needs to integrate people, area selection and exploration methods, with the use of descriptive and genetic geological models. Based on a syn-metamorphic genetic model for Archaean gold, successful exploration in Western Australia requires the integration of data on anomalous gold, alteration, lithology and structure. Many other parameters such as geophysics, geochemistry and regolith studies provide additional, indirect information that needs to be integrated into the overall exploration programme. Timely access to research findings and ability to integrate these into immediate exploration has contributed considerably to the success of the gold industry in Western Australia since 1980. Extensive and deeper drilling, and the ability of computers to handle the volume of data generated have enabled effective testing of many more geological targets.

Validation and Simulation of Optimised Compressive Crushing Ores and aggregates are used in countless applications all around in the society. The frequent and escalating usage of these natural resources requires efforts aimed at not only making do with what is available, but also undertaking actions to improve the production yield and the processes involved. This strive to improve the performance and efficiency of existing crushers and crushing processes has brought about research concerning optimisation of crushing plants as well as theoretical optimisation of crushing. Previous work shows that different applications and different materials require different compressive crushing in order to accomplish a theoretically optimal size distribution. These optimisation results, obtained by genetic evolutionary algorithms and evaluated with so called fitness functions, convey the theoretically optimal number of compressions and their corresponding compression ratios. Presented in this paper are thus some laboratory crushing tests, which are conducted in order to validate a set of previously optimised crushing sequences. More specifically, interparticle crushing sequences are carried out in a Piston-die testing equipment, where samples are sieved between each compression. The subsequent analysis of these results shows good correlation with model predictions, which combined with a comparative study between presented optimisation results and measured data from a real crusher indicate a significant potential for improvement. However, before redesigning crushers according to what is theoretically optimal, the resulting impact as well as the effects on the outcome of a crushing plant must be examined. Crushing plant simulations using the software PlantDesigner« are consequently performed. Models of existing crushers are altered, resulting in changed particle size distributions from some of the crushers in a crushing plant. Thence, it is concluded that significant gains can be made in terms of capacity, process yield and energy consumption.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

Water is a key resource input to copper heap leach operations in both quality and quantity. A number of recent developments in analysis of the technology have shown that water consumption can be optimised. The leach consumption has been generally considered in terms of minimisation of the evaporative loss by changing the application method (drippers or wobblers). Modelling of the irrigation effects on leach rate has shown that the poorer surface coverage from drippers has an adverse effect on the leach extraction rate. This is particularly evident in the early part of the leach. The use of different irrigation systems during alternate parts of the leach cycle can have benefits in minimising the water consumption without an unacceptable outcome from extended extraction times. By combining the leach rate effect with the evaporative loss estimates, an economic decision matrix can be generated to allow the operator to select an appropriate leach irrigation strategy, combining both irrigation delivery and irrigation rate. In the SX-EW plant, the total quantity of EW bleed and SX scrub stage bleed (both for iron control) can be reduced to an absolute minimum. The economic minimum may be different depending on the cost of producing the high-quality water used to replace the bleed streams. Adjustment of the SX process, in particular use of multiple entrainment control steps, can provide significant reductions in the total bleed and make up requirements.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

Cement and resin encapsulated tendons are widely used in the stabilisation of mine roadways. One of the main factors in controlling the efficiency of the reinforcement is the ability of the tendon to generate load in response to rock deformation. The analysis of field data from instrumented reinforcing tendons complimented with extensive laboratory investigations have more accurately defined the mechanisms by which load generation occurs. The role of reinforcing tendon profiles, hole geometry and encapsulation medium properties in controlling the reinforcement stiffness and capacity are discussed. The results of the investigation have implications in both the design of rock reinforcing systems and the optimisation of encapsulation mediums and tendons.

The fine grained complex orebody at Elura contains galena, silver and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite; sulphides account for about 90% of the orebody. A differential flotation circuit is operated to con- centrate lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The metallurgical performance to date indicates the need for improvement. The lead section has been sampled in detail to comprehensively assess its overall performance and to define problems associated with lead and silver flotation. The substantial amount of pyrite in the feed dominated the perfor- mance of each stage of the separation. It was responsible for extensive dilution of all concentrates and, as a consequence, for very large circulating loads. The rougher concentrate contained 68% pyrite some of which was rejected through the three stages of cleaning to 39% in the final concen- trate. However, this was still sufficient to hold the assay of this product below 45% Pb. Size by size behaviour shows that flotation rates of the valuable minerals, as characterised by their rate coefficients, were low through- out the circuit. There was a significant deterioration in these rates between rougher and cleaner I stages which resulted in large circulating loads between these stages. There was practically no recovery of coarse valu- able minerals to the final concentrate. The dilution of the final concen- trate by non-sulphide gangue was not a major problem. If the recovery of the galena and silver in the +38¦m size range could be raised to that of the - 381Lm size range, galena recovery would rise from 78% to 86% and silver recovery would improve from 46% to 59%. The Pb grade of the final concentrate would remain the same.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 km NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity.

Potential means of lowering overall costs to permit deeper stripping include : 1. the use of larger diameter blastholes in highly-fissured strata (to reduce drilling costs); 2. dewatering from semi-permanent bores to reduce blasting costs (by maximising the use of bulk ANFO) and promote highwall stability; and 3. the use of inclined blastholes, bulk AN, staggered V1 patterns, adequate backfill and more cost-effective stemming columns. Each of these is covered. The pumping of bulk watergels continuously raises the blasthole water column, thereby perpetuating the demand for these blasting agents. This must be a principal consideration when choosing between a bulk and a packaged watergel. Any packaged product should exhibit dimensional permanence and an energy yield per metre length equal to that of bulk ANFO. Possible ways in which controlled trajectory blasting (CTB) could benefit deeper stripping operations are outlined. By allowing the maximum use of bulk ANFO, de- watering may be a prerequisite of a viable CTB Operation.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Batch flotation tests were conducted on a haematite-bearing Sishen iron ore slimes sample from South Africa using reverse cationic flotation. The effect of grinding on flotation performance, the flotation response of various key impurities in the sample, and the feasibility of increasing metal recovery by refloating tailings in a scavenger flotation step were investigated. The test results indicate that reverse cationic flotation is effective in rejecting impurities from the iron ore sample tested. From a head grade assaying 6.4 per cent SiO2, 2.14 per cent Al2O3, 0.402 per cent K2O, 0.082 per cent P and 0.194 per cent TiO2, the levels of impurities were reduced to 1.83 per cent SiO2, 0.88 per cent Al2O3, 0.095 per cent K2O, 0.066 per cent P and 0.174 per cent TiO2 in the final concentrate at a Fe recovery of 74 per cent. The flotation response of SiO2, Al2O3 and K2O were found to be better than that of P and TiO2. The testwork demonstrated that grinding to 80 per cent passing about 49 microns is essential for upgrading the Sishen iron ore to produce >67 per cent Fe concentrate grade. This grind size corresponds to about 80 per cent liberation of haematite from the gangue minerals. Fe recoveries up to 76 per cent were obtained by refloating the rougher tailings in a scavenger stage, with little effect on the final concentrate grade. Size-by-size Fe recovery data obtained indicated that particles below ten microns were mostly lost in the desliming stage conducted prior to flotation whilst some reported to the froth by entrainment. Some of the coarser haematite-gangue composite particles reported to the froth product by genuine flotation.
