Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

Tunnels are being built around the world using TBMs and prefabricated segments or in situ concrete as linings. Clients demand high quality of these linings to guarantee a long-term stability and density of the tunnels. This paper describes the development and the use of segmental lining systems, including joints, important design criteria, installation procedures, possible mistakes and consequences, repair works and final results for different sites in Europe and around the world. The experience on these sites shows that damages may occur, if some essential aspects are not considered. These aspects include:parameters of the TBMs and back-up equipment such as fixation of jacking rams, movement of the back-up on the lining or ring reformer;parameters of the segments such as quality of moulds, quantity of reinforcement or structure of the joints; andparameters of the tunnel drive such as advance rate, ring-gap grouting or experience of the tunnel crew.All these aspects have to be considered very carefully in detail to get a good lining accepted in total.

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. Hence it is, by means of a "kick-up" dumped upon a grizzly, set with 2-in. spaces, the oversize being broken by a 15 x '9 Fraser and Chalmer jaw...

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted. The use of econometric models to assess the effects of a Government's policy on an industry is gaining momentum. This is particularly so for the Mineral Industry and it is important that mineral industry management understands the techniques involved in developing econometric models. Models are usually constructed outside the industry by either government departments or their consultants and used by the policy makers to investigate artificially the implementation and ramifications of new policies. This paper discusses the application of econometric models in Governmental policy determination, highlights the use of various models in Australia and gives an overview of the techniques involved using Australian examples.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

The prospect of utilization of phosphate ores which contain high P205 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilization of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaA13(PO4)2(OH)5.3H20 and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H20. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt. Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

The Lake Rotokaua sulphur deposit, near Taupo, New Zealand, is a lacustrine sedimentary ore body, 220 acres in area and from 7 ft to 96 ft thick, containing, within the area drilled to date, some 20 million long tons of ore averaging 25% elemental sulphur in unconsolidated tuffaceous diatomaceous clay, overlain by about 120 ft of pumice sand and by the shallow Lake Rotokaua. An additional amount of perhaps 4 million tons of sulphur is regarded as probable in the area remaining to be drilled. Current economic studies cover the problems of mining an unconsolidated water-saturated formation with some residual thermal activity nearby; conservation and restoration after mining in a scenic recreation area; beneficiation of the ore and extraction of high- purity sulphur, principally for fertilizer manufacture. The deposit has additional importance as a pointer to possible further discoveries in the Thermal Region.\

Pressure drops were measured in a column packed with glass spheres and wax particles, both in random and preferential distributions. Variables investigated included wax content, gas flow rates, and temperatures.It is shown that for random distribution of wax, pressure drop is exponentially related to wax content above the melting point of wax and that below this it increases with increasing gas rate and temperature.For preferred distribution of wax the highest increase in pressure drop is obtained with horizontal distribution of wax and the least with vertical distribution.Comparison with operating blast furnace data and application of results to practice are also included.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. "Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. The Radio Hill nickel-copper deposit is located 30 km south of Karratha. It is a new discovery in an area where similar mineralization had been previously discovered at Mt. Scholl and Ruth Well. Radio Hill is the first massive Ni-Cu sulphide deposit of economic significance to have been located in the Western Pilbara.Preliminary studies indicate that the sulphide mineralization occurs within gabbros, pyroxenites and peridotites of a basic igneous cumulate layered sequence. Primary sulphides have been subsequently remobilized and concentrated as stringer and massive mineralization. This is tentatively attributed to the intrusion of a further gabbroic body.The deposit appears to be of the gabbroic association type with a Ni:Cu ratio varying from 1:4 in the outer parts of the mineralized envelope to 1:0.9 towards the central zones. In drill core observations, chalcopyrite surrounding pyrrhotite was noted in many instances. Drilling has so far delineated a body developed over a strike length of 600 m and a horizontal width of up to 25 m. The mineralization plunges 20° to the southwest with a southerly dip varying from 75° in the west to about 20° - 30° in the east.The deposit is a leaf-shaped ore zone, plunging southwest from a vertical depth of 17 m in the north to 300 m in the south. The massive sulphides occur as lensoid masses within this zone. A geological resource of up to 2.5 million tonnes at 1.5 per cent Ni and l.4 per cent Cu is indicated.The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, with significant cobalt, platinum group metals and gold. Tellurides of Pd, Bi and Pb were detected by scanning electron microprobe within the pyrrhotite and other trace metals include Zn and native tin. Massive magnetite is sometimes associated with the massive pyrrhotite intersections.A test on one composite massive sulphide sample showed that pyrrhotite is present mainly as the non-magnetic hexagonal variety and only 10 per cent is present as magnetic monoclinic pyrrhotite.The deposit has no surface expression and its identification was based mainly Oil drilling targets generated by geophysical methods. No secondary minerals have been observed in association with the primary sulphides, even though the deposit is only 17 m below surface in the northern part.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. Their somewhat diverse findings were published for the most part in the Australian technical press which, unfortunately, is not sufficiently represented in foreign libraries.The following article is based on an eighteen months' study in the district for Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd., preceded by four years' experience with almost identical rock types in the, Porcupine district of Ontario. Sixty Schlumberger electrical soundings were carried out in the Depot Springs area, near Agnew, Western Australia as part of an investigation into the availability of groundwater for the Agnew nickel project. The object of the survey was to locate calcrete aquifers related to Tertiary drainage channels on the Pre- Cambrian surface. The electrical soundings were initially interpreted using sets of master curves and auxiliary point methods. Electrical sections were produced and contour maps prepared of apparent resistivity for AB=80m, total conductance of the overburden and transverse resistance.

This paper will discuss Fordertechnik dawatering screens and their application in process industries. Fordertechnik screens were designed for the dewatering of deslimed, wet fines materials encountered in the mineral beneficiation, sand and coal processing industries. However, these screens have also been used in such industries as municipal waste treatment, paper pulp, chemicals and the food industries. Fordertechnik screens are of simple design and, as a result, offer low capital and maintenance costs. The design is based on the use of twin counter-rotating vibratory motors which provide high frequency, low amplitude linear movement of the screen deck which is essential for high production requirements. Fordertechnik dewatering screens are engineered and manufactured in Australia by Mitchell Cotts Engineering under licence to Fordertechnik GmbH of Mulheim, West Germany

Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. Some of the results of errors on the low and high sides of true value in exploration, resource or reserve estimations and in production caused by sampling and/or sample preparation mistakes, faulty practices, equipment and/or analysis are considered.
