The problems associated with equating calculated and measured properties of explosives with blast results are examined. The results from six full-scale test blasts in a limestone quarry are described. The purpose of the full-scale trial was two-fold, i) assess the role of varying aluminum levels (10% maximum) in a given explosive in terms of blasting performance, and, ii) find correlation between calculated, as well as measured properties of explosives and the resulting blasting performance. Each blast consisted of 36 holes, initiated with short period detonators in a staggered 3-row 2.4 m x 2.7 m (burden x spacing) pattern. Each 75 mm diameter borehole with no subgrade contained on the average 22 kg of 65 mm diameter cartridged explosive. The bench height was 6.3 m, with an average collpr of 1.2 m. The calculated and mgasured properties of explosive included, strength, detonation and explosion pressure, VOD, plate-dent depth, underwater bubble and shock energy, and the total energy efficiency. Each blast was instrumented to measure detonation velocity, initiation sequence, muck pile motion by means of high-speed photography and blasting vibrations. The post-blast measurements included photogrammetric survey of muck pile for size distribution on surface, muck pile profile, as well as the extent of backbreak. The results showed that the overall blasting performance of the explosive in question was nearly commensurate with the level of aluminum in the explosive, and there was excellent correlation between the underwater test properties and the blast results. The study also exemplified the need for more extensive post-blast analysis than is usual practice, for quantitative assessment of blasting performance of explosives and providing the necessary data-base for calibration of blasting models.

At Tropicana gold mine (TGM), mine planning is completed from ‘one source of truth’ known as the Integrated Planning Model (IPM). The IPM is a block model which forms a core component of the TGM Mine Planning System – used for short, medium and long-term mine planning cycles, and for Mine to Mill reconciliation.The IPM was developed from a desire to consolidate long-term information contained in mineral resource and ore reserve models, with short-term information from the grade control processes, including grade control models and ore polygons.The IPM is informed initially by resource models, upon which the longer term budget and schedules are based. The IPM is routinely updated with grade control models and ore design information, providing increased confidence for short to medium term mine planning. In this format, the IPM also provides a framework for reconciliation of resource performance with grade control, mining actuals and mining schedules, and ultimately milling. As well as a means for analysing past performance through reconciliation, it has proven its worth as a predictor of variation and an input to successful schedule sequencing and change management. The IPM is a critical component of the TGM Mine Planning System, providing a centralised framework for short interval mill feed prediction through to life-of-mine (LOM) planning.Current development of the IPM is working towards incorporating Mine to Mill optimisation and real-time material tracking projects at TGM. If successful, the model will provide a truly powerful mine planning data source. Current development outlines a mechanism for tracking material from Mine to Mill, and for transferring mill performance data back to the IPM. Increasingly advanced material classification and mine planning, incorporating the multiple geometallurgical variables, will enable the mine to provide consistent mill feed products and result in a steady state and optimised mill.This paper outlines the vision, creation and benefits of the IPM at TGM. "Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS¬ Expert system together with three VisioRockÖ online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS¬ is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia PacificÆs (MMPT-AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS¬ logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

The integration of historic exploration geoscientific data with high precision multi-element and isotope geochemistry can provide explorers fundamental information on mineral potentiality, tectonic setting, source signatures, fluid migration, mineralisation environment and the timing of mineralising events. Such knowledge is crucial for ore modelling and target generation, particularly for concealed ore systems in both brown and greenfields. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. "Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. The potential of the developed multi-dimensional analysis system to assist interpretation from large data sets through derived digital mapping models is presented accompanied by preliminary results. The concept learning model is original and its application general. Applications exist in general science, engineering, earth resource management and economics. The developed system incorporates advances in machine learning, neural networks, object-oriented software engineering, knowledge representation and fuzzy logic. ' The specific application presented involves automatic earth resource modelling and assessment involving geological theories of mineral potential. The developed system functions as a new and powerful mineral exploration tool, To date the model has been trialled on an earth resource database and several published data sets. A more general potential application is knowledge discovery within databases. The specific theory that is tested in the experimental results is the nature of the cause-effect relationship between the hypothesised geological causes and the measured effects within a previously published test survey. Also integrated here are a neurophysiological cerebellar model of human learning, a new concept similarity measure for pattern recognition, modelled components to explain human concept formation through knowledge discovery and a means of permanent representation.The implementation is as a new artificial neural network architecture functioning as a hybrid expert system. Understanding of programmed concept learning is extended through the model. Also established is a basis for a new approach to multivariate data analysis. Spatial analysis for decision support is integrated over many dimensions, relationships, data types and data modes. Application of the developed methodology and system adds value to data bases. Discovered knowledge is represented as new generalisations, interpolations, classification hierarchies, aggregations and associations within a dynamic, maintainable and reusable integrated knowledge framework. New digital knowledge products and intelligent access follow. Permanently stored, maintainable, easily accessible and discovered knowledge improves decisions through extended hypothesis testing, spatial data analysis and inferencing, prediction, logical deductions and explanations.

The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and has increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to a milling throughput of 265 t/h in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of underground and open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate. Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently with surveys of both the crushing/grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model, such that overall process optimisation was possible. This was to apply both by exploring the operating limits of the currently installed plant, as well as looking at the logical next stage of capital plant expansions. Surveys of the crushing and grinding circuits were conducted at the Osborne concentrator in May 2008. The main objective of the surveys was to review the potential of increasing grinding throughput whilst maintaining the flotation feed 80 per cent passing size. This would also require improving the efficiency of the crushing circuit which was already operating in excess of 80 per cent of the time. Steady-state simulations were performed using the developed circuit models to identify opportunities to increase throughput and alleviate high circulating loads in both the secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Due to operational changes, the recommendations resulting from this project were considered by Osborne but have as yet only been partially implemented.  This paper covers part A or the crushing and grinding component of the project. A separate paper discussing part B or flotation is also being presented at this conference. The results of interactive simulations between the flotation and grinding circuit models are included in part B of this paper.

This paper covers Part B or the flotation component of the project. A separate paper discussing Part A or crushing and grinding is also being presented at this conference. Surveys of the Osborne flotation circuit were performed along with a comprehensive review of the cell characteristics including measurements of the gas and froth phases of individual flotation cells. These data resulted in a size-by-size floatability component model of the complete circuit. This circuit model was then used to perform steady-state simulat- ions to evaluate options to improve both overall circuit and individual cell performance. The grinding circuit model discussed in a separate paper or Part A of this project was then used interactively with the flotation circuit model to recommend the best operating regime to maximise overall efficiency. For example, the balance between increased crushing and grinding costs versus higher copper recovery and final concentrate grade. Due to changes in market conditions in the fourth quarter of 2008, the focus was shifted to prioritising operational changes rather than capital expansion modifications, in order to improve circuit performance.

The value derived by good mine planning is often underestimated as many mines steer their attention to the more immediate and more easily recognised successes made by the day-to-day operational æbush fireÆ fighting. Similar to machine maintenance, the efforts made to quickly rectify short-term breakdowns are well recognised; whereas the value derived from the work in planning, scheduling and undertaking preventative maintenance is not so obvious or readily quantified. Too often the focus of the business shifts to building and supporting an efficient operations team at the expense of developing a highly experienced team of mine planning practitioners that are well trained with procedures and purpose-built tools to develop optimum mining strategies. A resource has an inherent value based on its quality parameters and its likely mining conditions. How well that value can be unlocked is governed, to a large degree, by the proficiency of the mine planning practitioners, as they, essentially, set the foundation of the mine business and the path along which the mine will operate. The importance of having a well documented and procedural mine planning methodology that integrates both a thorough technical and economic understanding of the resource cannot be over emphasised. The aim of the mine planning process is to develop a robust mine design and production capability which can best cater for future uncertainty whilst providing the best opportunity to maximise cash flow into the business. The planning process must be transparent and auditable, clearly summarising the process steps and assumptions made to arrive at a justifiable and defendable outcome. To provide maximum value to the business, the planning process must be repeatable and scalable to enable easy replication throughout the different mines and projects within an organisation. The diminishing numbers of highly experienced personnel within our industry, coupled with the growing pressure to clearly demonstrate that appropriate due diligence has been exercised, means that well documented and monitored mine planning processes using purposed built and innovative tools need to be developed to ensure optimum outcomes.

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

Blasting can impact the efficiency of entire downstream mining operation. Individual technology solutions for blasting have been available in the industry for many years but all of them only cater for certain aspects of blasting. Many of them are based on individual research and/or experiences. Some of the available software solutions are not suitable to be used in the field as that they need advanced skills or tools. Also, most do not take technology advancements like mobility, advanced data analytics, web solutions and integration into consideration. Hence, no technology platform is currently present in the industry that addresses all potential needs a blaster may need in an integrated manner.This paper presents an integrated solution that takes care of all aspects of blasting – design blasts according to mine plan; collect data after drilling has been carried out (as there is often difference in designed and actual drilled hole locations in the field); predict blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations, wave front reinforcement and flyrock distance; and after assessment, allows changes in charging, delay timing and sequence. The technology solution is a secure, cloud-hosted, web-based software-as-a-service solution that can be accessed from anywhere. Also it has a mobile app, which is available for both Android and iPhone/iPad. The mobile app is also integrated with the web-based solution using application programming interface calls to the central data repository.Case studies for two limestone mines are presented where this solution is being used in its initial format. This software platform enabled analysis of the outcome from a previous blast pattern and then subsequently allowed optimisation of blasting operations based on historical data. Uses of this platform have resulted in improved key performance indicators in these two limestone mines. The mobile app as part of this platform enables extensive field blast data capture and analysis and also various predictions before a blast. Data collected include blast parameters, individual hole charging, initiation pattern, videos, photographs and vibration records for analysis/reporting. The key features of the solution are a blast designer, a detailed blast data collection/analysis and a series of environmental predictors. These predictors give blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations and wave front reinforcement and take remedial steps before blasting to optimise and control adverse environmental impact. The Golden Cross Mine is located within the Waitekauri Valley near the southern end of the Coromandel Ranges, eight kilometres north-west of Waihi, North Island, New Zealand. The mine is owned and operated in a joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Ltd (20 per cent). The underground mine produces gold and silver from low sulphidation epithermal quartz veins which developed in the shallow parts of a meteoric water dominated system during the Upper Miocene (7.36 - 6.67 Ma). The Empire Vein System is hosted within a dilational structural environment which developed at the lithological contact between acid intrusives, rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs and reworked pyroclastics, and undifferentiated andesites. The formation of the Empire Vein System was controlled by the rheological properties of the host rocks and variable displacement along a series of normal, right lateral, easterly-dipping faults. These faults represent sub-parallel zones of master shearing within a Riedel shear model. Underground mining extracts ore from the steeply dipping hangingwall and the complex footwall veins of the Empire Vein System. Initially sills are driven along the hangingwall vein on ten to fifteen metre sublevel intervals. In the footwall zones where significant mineralisation adjacent to the hangingwall sill drives has been identified, a series of cross-cuts and footwall drives (sub-parallel to the hangingwall sill) are also developed. Where continuity of mineralisation and ground conditions permit a combination of post pillar flatbacking and AVOCA longhole benching methods are used. Detailed underground mapping of lithology, quartz veining and major structures provides the information for designing ground support and footwall pillars, planning mine development and ore extraction sequencing. Sectional interpretation displays the vertical extent of faults, fractures and the vein system. The mining methods used underground at the mine have evolved through a thorough understanding of the structural complexity and the systematic geological mapping of the Empire Vein System.
