"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. This paper describes the possibility of the application of flotation to the separation of monazite from xenotime and of columbite from ferberite, which have been said to be difficult with generally used physical beneficiation methods. For Malaysian monazite and xenotime samples, a great difference is observed between the flotation recoveries at pH 7.5 using 1.0 x 10-4mol/1 dodecylammonium chloride (DAC). The grade and recovery of columbite in the binary flotation with both minerals result in 85 per cent and 67 per cent in the cleaning froth and 91 per cent and 51 per cent in the re-cleaning froth, without adding any scavenging stages. For monazite samples from various localities, the flotability is dominated by the electrostatic interaction between mineral surface and collector ion using DAC as collector, but the singular decrease of flotation is observed in the sample of which the crystallinity is low and the surface structure is rugged and complex. Otherwise, ferric ion in the flotation system probably dissolved from mineral is found to activate the flotation using sodium dodecylsulfate as collector. For columbite and ferberite, the separation is judged possible at pH 3.0 using 1.0 x 10'3mo1/l sodium oleate (NaOl) from the single flotation results of each mineral. In the binary flotation, however, columbite recovery in the froth is greatly diminished below that expected. This would be because NaOl is prevented from adsorbing on the columbite surface of which the charge is transformed more negative side by the specific adsorption of the tungstate ion dissolved from ferberite.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

Professional engineers need to be able to apply university learning to practice. In particular, they have to take responsibility for interactions between technical systems and the complex social environments in which they operate. The most effective way of building this competency is through active experiential learning. We have been developing an advanced educational integrated simulation system to provide mining engineering students with an interactive and immersive learning experience that is not otherwise possible. This will give students an authentic experience in working with industry software packages, while also contextualising the learning in terms of the broader and longer-term impact of technical decisions. We have been piloting the system, in undergraduate courses in order to establish its effectiveness in building systems thinking competencies for mining engineering. For postgraduate students and professionals, the same tools and methods can support studies of more challenging and complex scenarios where mining engineers have to place their decisions within complex global industry contexts.

HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

The type of population encountered in the sampling of coal, ores and other products of natural phenomena is one in which the variance within a cluster of elements generally increases steadily as the size of the cluster increases. To enable estimation of variances of stratified random or systematic sampling for such populations one must model the serial correlation function or alternatively, the variogram function. The author has postulated a specific symmetry of the serial correlation function which leads to expressions with rich theoretical and practical implications. These expressions provide a spatial correlation function which explains power law relationships often observed in studies of dispersion variances. They also enable straightforward calculations of sampling variances. The importance of the role of finite population size in the equations leads one to examine previously held concepts of ælargeÆ and æsmallÆ sample populations. The model based on the symmetry postulate is a fractal model with the serial correlation function of a hypothetically infinite population being of the same form as that developed by Mandelbrot for discrete fractional noise. Techniques used in fractal mathematics apply, including box counting and fitting of a dimension function. The paper establishes a framework for the understanding of this fractal theory and demonstrates how to calculate sampling variances from the model variogram using simulated data fitting the model.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. "Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The framework draws on definitions and guidelines readily available in various resource industry reporting codes and public company reporting requirements.The framework assesses three key areas for placing a resource project in its correct relative context, namely:the project development stagethe confidence in the Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and/or Ore Reservesthe level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the reported results or options for the project.The application of the Resource Project Framework is illustrated using two project examples, one from publicly reported company project releases and the other for two development projects.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2016. A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. Further coke trials with southern or bentonite will be carried out when ore quality has been improved by the introduction of ore sintering at Newcastle.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period of operation of the Newcastle coke ovens and blast furnaces from April 1960 (when No. 3 blast furnace was blown in after rebuilding) to December 1960, a bentonite coke trial was carried out based on earlier research findings (Gregory, 1959a, 1959b; Felton and Gregory, 1960; Gregory, 1960) that as little as 0 3 per cent to 05 per cent bentonite clay added to northern N.S.W. high volatile coking coals gave a significant increase in coke strength. This paper examines the complex interplay of deposit characteristics, mining plans, tailings disposal techniques and rehabilitation requirements on planning for mineral sands operations. All component parts of this mining cycle are interdependent and cannot be evaluated in isolation when optimising a mineral sands operation. This is most evident when projects are large-scale or involve resources that contain complexities such as high slimes content, consolidated hard band materials, acid forming materials and radioactive materials. Projects located in environmentally sensitive areas add further to the need for more stringent planning. This paper describes the analysis techniques adopted by Hatch to evaluate mining and tailings placement options for a dredging and floating concentrator system. The principles and methods used in the analysis are applicable to any mining system involving the complexities listed above. The focus of this paper is on the reconstitution of mined material as tailings and the impact of this process on mining schedules and tailings construction and placement options.

Submerged arc welding (SAW) is one of the significant metal-joining processes for manufacturing marine vessels, steel pipes, and offshore structures with high deposition rate and engineering reliability. Welding flux serves several essential functions, including atmospheric shielding, arc stabilisation, bead morphology control and weld metal (WM) refinement. Therefore, from a thermodynamic point of view, the focus for flux design and WM compositional/microstructural modification has been placed to elucidating the transfer pathways and mechanisms of major alloying elements, such as Si, Mn, Ti and O during welding. To this end, a thermodynamic model has been established to predict alloying element contents in the WM. Such functions are enabled by the physicochemical properties of the fluxes, which are inherently rooted in the nature of the fluxes. A unique yet systematical investigation, including physicochemical property changes and structural evolution behaviours, has been conducted over the wide range of fluxes applied to actual welding of EH36 shipbuilding steels. Combined with spectroscopic methods, structural behaviours of network formers such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 and network modifiers such as MgO, MnO and CaO have been illustrated. Viscosity and ionic conductivity have been found to be positively associated with the degree of polymerisation.

A new concept central to the search for sample correctness is presented. In spite of its simplicity, this concept has already unknowingly formed the implicit basis of already established, current limiting rules of use for certain types of samplers, used as mere examples in this paper. Once explicitly enunciated though, this fundamental principle gives immediate, simple and new practical rules for the design of predictably correct sampling equipment and for sampling device auditing. Examples of application are offered as an illustration, including an earlier, important, albeit unpublished, idea found in Pierre GyÆs earlier works.

A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

Blast vibration analysis is one of the important topics in the control technology of blast vibration damage. Nowadays, blasting vibration safety standards are based on both the particle velocity and the frequency of vibration and they have been adopted widely and internationally. However, the analysis on vibration frequencies is less studied compared to investigations of peak particle velocity. For the vibration induced by a spherical charge in a viscoelasticly infinite rock mass, an expression of vibration spectrum taking into account the damping effect of rock mass is inferred. Then the attenuation laws of dominant frequencies and centroid frequencies are compared theoretically. For the case of cylindrical charge, dynamic finite element method (DFEM) software of LS-DYNA is employed to analyse the attenuation laws of characteristic frequencies. The research demonstrates that, no matter whether it is a spherical charge or a cylindrical charge, there is a local mutation or fluctuation at some distance when the blast proceeds, while the centroid frequencies conform to a smooth attenuation law. Both the multipeaks structures of vibration spectra and the decay rate difference between high- and low-frequency components contribute to the mutation or fluctuation investigated in this study. Additionally, an increase in longitudinally sonic velocity or the quality factor of rock mass produces an increase in the vibration frequencies, whereas an increase in blast source diameter or the rise time of blast load produces a decrease in vibration frequencies from a spherical charge. In borehole blasting, there is a positive correlation between the vibration frequencies and charge diameter, whereas there is a negative correlation with charge length. And altering the initiation plan will change vibration frequencies to various degrees. A natural gamma-ray gauge has been devel- oped for discriminating overburden and inter- seam sediment from low ash coal located on a moving conveyor belt. It is based on the difference in natural radioactivity of the sediment and overburden compared with the low ash coal, which is detected with a highly ef- ficient "Polyscin" NaI(T1) gamma-ray detector located underneath the conveyor. Gauges have been successfully installed on the bucket wheel boom of the two coal dredgers at the Loy Yang Open Cut. They are used to warn dredger operators that they are digging overburden or sediment and that action is required to avoid the sediment or divert it to the waste dump rather than send it to the coal bunkers at the power station.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd.
