The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.

Chemical diffusion coefficients and heats of activation for diffusion in the NizAh fy), NiAl (6), and Ni3A1 (E) intermetallic phases and the solid solution of aluminum in nickel (( phase) were calculated from layer growth experiments. No finite diffusion coefficient for the NiAl3 ((3) inter metallic phase could be calculated. The values of the diffusion coefficients are dependent both on the method of calculation and the type of diffusion couple. The heat of activation for diffusion in the y phase was found to be 47 kcal per mole in the temperature range oj 428" to 610°C. Heats of activation of 41, 12, and 48 kcal per mole were found for diffusion in the 6, E, and ( phases, respectively , in the temperature range of 655" to 1000°C. Experiments with markers in the diffusion zone demonstrate a very pronounced Kirkendall effect. It appears that only aluminum atoms take an active part in the diffusion process during the formation of the 0 and y phases at temperatures of about 600°C. During the formation of the 6, E, and < phases at higher temperatures only nickel atoms are moving. It is suggested that the great stability of the intermetallic compounds in the Ni-A1 system governs the Kirkendall effect. SOME factors controlling layer growth during inter-diffusion in the Ni-A1 system (phase diagram, see Fig. 1) were studied by Castleman and Seig1e.l&apos;~ They found the NiA1, ((3) and NiAl3 (y) intermetallic compounds to appear in the diffusion zone of Ni-A1 couples at annealing temperatures of 400" to 625°C; the NiAl (6) and Ni3A1 (E) intermetallic compounds appeared in y-Ni couples at annealing temperatures of 800" to 1050°C. These authors carefully examined metallographically Ni-A1 couples after 340 hr annealing at 600°C. Besides the (3 and y phases they found very thin layers of the 6 and E phases. ~n~erman~ and Castleman and Froot4 observed a much more rapid growth of the 5 and E phases at 600°C in Ni-A1 couples in case a crack was present at the /3-A1 interface. Numerous layer thickness measurements carried out by Castleman and Seigle on the y phase prove that the layer growth of this phase obeys the parabolic law after a certain transient period. From this they concluded that the layer growth of the y phase is controlled by volume diffusion. The growth of the 13, 6, and E phases appeared to be volume-diffusion-controlled also. The authors estimated that at 600°C and at atmospheric pressure Dp was 1.8 x lo-"ll sq cm per sec, D, 9.1 x 10" ™ sq cm per sec, Qp 27 kcal per mole, and Qy 31 kcal per mole. The present work was carried out to obtain more quantitative data about the kinetics of growth of the phases of the Ni-A1 system and the reactions that occur during the formation of these phases. Because in this system the diffusion process results in the formation of several distinct intermetallic compounds, the current term reaction diffusion is used in the title of this paper. In order to obtain layers of the fl phase compound of uniform thickness, a new technique for preparing diffusion couples was developed. The kinetics of growth of the y phase in 6-Al, E-Al, and Ni-A1 diffusion couples was studied at different temperatures. The kinetics of growth of the 6, c, and ( phases in Ni-y, Ni-6, and Ni-c diffusion couples was also studied at different temperatures. The calculation of the diffusion coefficients Dp and Dy by Castleman and Seigle are critically considered in this paper; by means of a revised method of calculation more reliable val-ues of , and Dg were found. These values are in good agreement with the values of the diffusion coefficients obtained by the method of Boltzmann-Matano. From the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients the heats of activation for diffusion were calculated by means of an Arrhenius-type equation. The investigation of the Kirkendall effect has been used to obtain information about the ratio of the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of the separate atoms5 and the mechanism of diffusion. Moreover porosity as a result of a distinct Kirkendall effect would be of practical importance in connection with the bonding of diffusion coatings. The analyses of the diffusion couples were carried out by metallographic methods. The values of the concentrations at the phase boundaries and the concentration profile in each of the phases, which are needed for the calculation of diffusion coefficients, were obtained by electron-pro be X-ray microanalysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Materials for Diffusion Couples. The intermetallic compounds 6 (50 at. pct Ni) and E (74 at. pct Ni) were prepared from the pure metals by high-frequency induction melting in argon atmosphere. Use was made of aluminum wire (99.99 wt pct Al) and nickel sheet (99.95 wt pct Ni). The 6 and E phase melts and the nickel shiet (thickness 0.1 and 0.5 mm) used for preparing diffusion couples were annealed for 64 hr at 1200°~ for homogenization and grain coarsening (final crystal size 1 to 3 mm). composition and homogeneity of the intermetallic compounds were checked by mi-crohardness measurements and X-ray diffraction. The objective of this paper is to present practical methods of applying radioactivity logs to problems of interest both to those engaged in evaluating fundamental reservoir data as well as to those engaged in subsurface structural work. The basic theories underlying the operation of radioactivity logging methods are briefly discussed along with some of the problems arising in the interpretation of the log. Relative methods of quantitative interpretation are described, with a discussion of relative reference lines and specific examples are given showing the application of these relative quantitative interpretation methods. To show the variation of the methods described, specimen wells penetrating formations widely divergent in point of geologic age were selected to demonstrate the application. A relative reference line is determined for the Neutron Curve and by comparison to known petrophysical data such as porosities from diamond cores, a direct quantitative relationship is developed. The application of this relative calibration curve to logs of unknown wells will permit a reasonably accurate determination of porosity in limestone and dolomite formations. Specific examples are given showing the application of these relative methods of interpretation to logs of the Smackover limestone in Louisiana, the Edwards limestone and dolomites of South Texas, and Permian dolomites of West Texas. Radioactivity logs have been used extensively by the petroleum industry for a number of years and recognition of their value has grown steadily, not only as tools to aid in the solution of specific stratigraphic problems, but also as potential sources of the basic data necessary for the estimation of net pay and reserves. The value of radioactivity logs for stratigraphic work has been pointed out in the literature,1,2,4,5,6 and now has long been recognized by the industry, but the quantitative application of the logs has advanced but little beyond the stage of a strong conviction that radioactivity logging curves will some day provide the information on such important quantities as the porosity and the liquid saturation of the formations. During the past few years the staffs of the Lane-Wells Company and Well Surveys, Incorporated, have devoted a great deal of time, thought, and experimentation to the relationships existing between radioactivity curves and the lithologic conditions encountered, and this paper is, in a manner of&apos; speaking, intended as a progress report of this work and includes suggestions which the authors have found useful in the interpretation of radioactivity logs. The section on theory is not intended as a complete exposition of the physical processes involved, but rather as a brief introduction to the reader of these processes so that he may acquire a better understanding of the behavior of the radioactivity curves under the varied conditions encountered in normal well logging. Three relative methods for using neutron logs for the quantitative estimation of porosity in limestone or dolomite are presented. These methods are based on the comparison of logs and porosity data from wells in Louisiana, South Texas, West Texas, and New Mexico. These areas were selected because not only were there more core data available from these areas but also the majority of these data were from limestone or dolomitic zones. The correlation between core data and logs is simpler for limestones and dolomites than it is for sandstones due to the fact that sandstones are more complex than limestones and differ more widely among themselves as to composition of cementing materials, siltiness, etc. When data applicable to the various types of sandstones are available, the authors hope to present a discussion similar to this paper covering sandstones or possibly a more general discussion covering all types of reservoir rocks. The relative methods for estimating porosity which are presented in this paper fall short of the absolute method sought. However, these methods possess the advantage that they can be applied to almost any neutron log as long as the range of application is held within the limits imposed by the local lithologic conditions which prevailed during calibration, i.e., these methods are for short range application only. The system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or CO2 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modern metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100" to 1500ºC., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. Review of Previous Work The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry&apos;s law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as O2, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts&apos; law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry&apos;s law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: 2M+G2=2MG K=(MG)2 /M2 X PG2 [I] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: MG = K1 vPG2 [2 Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: 6Cu + SO2 = Cu2S + 2Cu2O [3] K= Cu2S X (Cu2O)2 i - (Cu)6(Pso2) [4] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: K1 =V3SO2 /Pso2 or

INTRODUCTION I retired in 1977 and have been enjoying myself ever since doing odd jobs for various people - on occasions, politicians. I commend it to you as post retirement - get involved in situations that nobody else will take on. It produces all sorts of excitement, it is a lot of fun and, courtesy of the media, you provide great raw material for their current Punch and Judy shows. The example of the adventures in the Escondida financing made me think about the history of the minerals industry in the United States. In order to see more clearly what is going to happen in the future, we have to look at the past and what we have learned, and try to extrapolate from that a scenario for the future. This paper is about global material cycles and the financial needs of the extractive industries. Since about 2,000 years B.C. we have been living in the Iron Age. Since about 4,000 B.C. we have been living in the Copper Age. These have been the two foundations of modern industrial society. Understanding the use of metals and materials helps us understand the civilization in which we live today. Let me focus more closely on the United States, particularly in this century. In the first two-thirds of this century the United States was growing and expanding and developing. It was providing for its inhabitants a society which was enjoying the benefits of a rising standard of living, improved opportunities and the ability to support a population growing at quite a dramatic rate. It is still growing. In the Department of Commerce, there is a clock that shows how many people there are in the United States. It turns all the time; the numbers are going up. On January 21,1980, when Ronald Reagan was sworn in as President, the number on that clock was a little over 220 million, and in the last week before he left, it was travelling towards 245 million. During his period in Washington, we have added , the equivalent of one total state such as California. That gives the dimensions of the U.S. appetite for raw material inputs. The inputs are of critical importance. COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE During the first two-thirds of this century, the minerals sector enjoyed comparative advantages. There was a clear understanding of the importance of minerals enshrined in the tax legislation of the country from the early decades of this century - the depletion allowance. No other country identified as clearly that the supplies of minerals were finite. As they are used up, just as with a wearing-out machine, one must get capital back to replace the resource when the time comes. Within the last decade, that idea has been questioned and criticised. It is now seen as giving money away to a preferred part of the economy, instead of recognizing what depletion is all about. In previous times it insured that the U.S. always was able to regenerate the capital in its minerals industry, so that it could remain competitive. The U.S. had plenty of everything, including energy. We had a growing population. Equally important, we had an agriculture that led the world in productivity, even as far back as the turn of the century. It continues to do so. We still retain that comparative advantage, an ability to produce our foodstuffs in quantity and quality at excellent cost. Look at another ingredient of our comparative advantage, the energy position. We ran through the first two-thirds of the century with ever- decreasing energy costs. In the 1940s and 1950s the coal industry went into a decline. Why? Because the $3.00 - $5.00 a ton cost of mining coal in the U.S. represented relatively expensive energy. A ton of good grade bituminous coal contains 25 million BTU&apos;s. $0.20 a million BTU&apos;s represents $5.00 a ton at the pithead. The flotation behavior of quartz in the presence of alkyl ammonium acetates as a function of alkyl chain length has been interpreted in terms of hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. The van der Waals cohesive free energy that is responsible for hemi-micelle formation has been found from these results to be 1.0 kT per CH2 group. This is in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from research on the properties of micelles in bulk systems. Collectors of the type CH3(CH2)n-2CH2-P, where P is a polar group and n is the number of carbon atoms in the straight alkyl chain, will induce flotation of an appropriate mineral at lower concentrations as n increases. This reduction in collector concentration with increasing n has been reported for such systems as xanthates on sulfides1,2 and amines on quartz.&apos; The effect of chain length of alkyl surfactants on such solution properties as conductivity,&apos; surface tension,&apos; and solubility6 and such interfacial properties of solids as contact angle7 and electrokinetic potential8 have received considerable attention, but only limited quantitative descriptions of the effects have been given. The electrokinetic studies of alkyl amine salts on quartz indicated that the solution concentration of collector at which the marked change in electrokinetic potential of quartz occurs decreases systematically as the length of the alkyl chain increases. The aim of the present work was to obtain a quantitative description in terms of current theories of flotation of the effect of the hydrocarbon chain of alkyl ammonium acetates on the flotation behavior of quartz. BASIC PRINCIPLES The marked changes in electrokinetic potentials of quartz in dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) solutions were postulated to result from the association of adsorbed collector ions into two-dimensional aggregates, called hemi-micelles.9 Subsequently, the rapid increase in flotation rate of quartz was shown to coincide with hemi-micelle formation." We would like to discuss briefly the concept of hemi-micelles in terms of recent interpretations of micelles in bulk solution. Micelle hypothesis: In dilute solutions, alkyl ammonium and related salts behave as ordinary strong electrolytes, but at a certain concentration there is a marked change in physical properties of the solutions, e.g., in equivalent conductance, transport number, freezing point lowering and viscosity. To account for these phenomena, McBainl1 introduced the concept of micelles, which are aggregates of long-chain ions. It is believed that the ionic heads of the constituent ions of the micelle are in contact with water, whereas the nonpolar groups turn away from it and are in contact with each other. Work must be done to bring these charged polar groups together, but energy is gained (i.e., so called van der Waals cohesive energy) when hydrocarbon chains are expelled from the water and allowed to associate. For a given polar group, the tendency to form micelles will therefore strongly depend on the hydrocarbon chain length. Theoretical treatments of micelle formation by Shinoda12 and Phillips13 and others lead to the following expression for the concentration at which micelles form (the critical micelle concentration or cmc) in aqueous solutions of long- chain electrolytes

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

THE Castle Dome copper deposit is of the porphyry type and occurs in a body of quartz monzonite intruded into the pre-Cambrian formations and possibly into the lower part of Paleozoic limestones. The hypogene sulphide minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, sphalerite, and galena. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are disseminated or occur in small closely spaced veins. The hypogene mineralization shows distinct zoning in the distribution of pyrite and chalcopyrite, so that the mineralized area can be subdivided into pyrite and chalcopyrite zones. Supergene enrichment, though not extensive, played an important part in the formation of the ore body, the chalcopyrite zone being the protore. Several thin, gently dipping, diabase sills occur in the mineralized area, and the copper content of the rock in and near these sills is substantially higher than average. The formation of the ore body was caused by the combined effects of three forces: I. Zoning of the hypogene mineralization, 2. Richer copper metallization associated with the diabase sills, and 3. Supergene enrichment.

At the Scotia plant of Blue Diamond Coal Co., near Cumberland Ky., good recovery and grade can be obtained when floating deep mine coal. When the plant changes over to strip coal, flotation fails, resulting in loss of coal. A procedure was developed at the Minerals Research Laboratory in Asheville, N. C., for recovering strip coal by flotation. Laboratory results were duplicated on a batch scale at the plant. The procedure was found to be effective when tried on a continuous basis in the processing plant.

Locked-cycle grinding experiments on mineral mixtures provide a means to study circuit performance in simulated continuous grinding systems. Such experiments with calcite/quartz mixtures revealed that approximately twenty-five 2-minute cycles are required before the composition of the circuit product and the recycle material attain steady state. The circulating load, after steadily increasing during the first 15 cycles, continued to fluctuate over a narrow range. Previous batch ball mill grinding of mineral mixtures has shown that breakage rate functions of minerals are time- independent but composition-dependent. In the closed-circuit grinding of ores with constituents having different grindabilities, the grinding rate parameters for the components also would therefore change during the transient period. With fluctuations in feed composition occurring randomly every half to one hour in processing plants, it is quite likely that the grinding circuit can be in unsteady state perpetually. The significance of these observations is discussed in this paper in the con- text of the models used in control schemes for the grinding circuits

Oklahoma produced about 40,000,000 bbl. less crude oil in 1930 than it did in 1929, but developed the largest initial production from current well completions ever recorded in its history. The output of this year would have exceeded all previous years had it not been for state-wide production curtailment. The record initial production of 5,911,982 bbl. from new oil wells completed during the year is accounted for entirely by the rapid development of the Oklahoma City field. Completions declined to the lowest levels since 1909, as a result of a marked reduction in number of dry holes incident to reduced wildcat exploration. Leasing was most active in western and northern counties of the state west of Oklahoma City, but on a much smaller scale than in the preceding year. Geological and geophysical surveys were likewise most active in this western territory. The urge to deeper objectives resulted in the discovery of oil on the Cement fold. Changing economic conditions have created a distress situation among the marginal operators in northeastern localities of the state. Elsewhere in the state production records and successful exploitation of new supplies have been eclipsed by a new social concept of the industry in accord with natural economic developments. Many of the producers of crude oil have organized for a voluntary stabilization of the industry by regulating the output of wells. To enforce their measures these operators have sought for and secured the support of the state. Consequently, the current position of the crude-oil producer is not unlike that of the natural-gas producer—withdrawal of supplies in accordance with market needs. And while the industry as a whole is artificially stabilized by these measures individual operators and some of the integrated concerns suffer hardships. Oil Developments and Production The early operations in Oklahoma were confined to northeastern and eastern localities, beginning in 1885. IT is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony-stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. Steady-state flow theory, previously applied to displacements with two mobile phases, is extended to cover down-structure flow involving three mobile phases: oil, gas and water. When used with normal reservoir fluid properties, the theory predicts the existence of four distinct flow regimes and the conditions under which each regime exists. The predicted behavior is verified by a parallel-plate model study. INTRODUCTION Special problems exist when a water flood is contemplated in a dipping reservoir having a substantial gas cap. Normally, the gas-cap region is one of very low oil saturation. If oil is moved into the gas cap during the flood, a loss in recovery results. Efficient recovery of the oil underlying the gas is therefore difficult. In two reported field water floods, injection into the gas cap has been used to solve these problems. At the West Norfolk Garr Sand Unit, injection into the upstructure region of the reservoir was made for the stated purpose of filling up the gas cap with water.&apos; The purpose in the Sholem Alechem Fault Block "A" Sims Sand Unit was to form a continuous water barrier between the gas cap and oil band.&apos; A laboratory model study preceded this flood and was described in the same publication. Both of these gas-cap water injections gave satisfactory results, but the published data are insufficient to allow generalizing to other field conditions. The present investigation was also undertaken to obtain results for a specific field problem. However, these results will be shown to be in agreement with an extension of the Dietz3-5 mathematical model to three-phase flowing systems. The agreement between the theory and the model studies indicates that the mathematical model can be used to describe completely the flowing system under some conditions, and to indicate the general type of flow to be expected under all conditions. FLOW THEORY The Dietz equations for two-phase flow are derived "&apos; for the case of constant-velocity linear flow in a homog- eneous porous medium. The transition zone between the fluids is assumed to be of negligible extent so that the displaced and displacing fluids are separated by a sharply defined interface, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The density and mobility of the displacing fluid are constant over the region behind the interface, and the same properties of the displaced fluid are constant over the region ahead of the interface. To extend the Dietz equations to three-phase systems, we postulate the flowing system shown in Fig. 2 and determine the conditions under which it can exist. The

THE Sherwood mine is an iron-ore mine owned and operated by the Inland Steel Co. in the Iron River district of the Menominee Range in Michigan. The property consists of an 80-acre tract in the village of Mineral Hills, about a mile north of the city of Iron River. The ore mined is a reddish brown, nonbessemer hematite and limonite. The ore bodies lie in a large syncline having an east-west strike and are associated with a rock structure that is folded in a complex manner. The two 40-acre tracts run north and south and the shaft is at about the center of the north forty. The shaft is 1286 ft. deep, with the principal operating level at a depth of 1000 ft. from surface. A new level at a depth of 1200 ft. is in process of development. The ore body at the 1000 ft. level is east and west at approximately the line between the north and south forties and at this elevation is from 50 to 250 ft. wide and extends above the level at varying heights of from 50 to 250 feet. The 1000-ft. haulage drift extends south from the shaft, through the east-west ore body to the slates on the south side of the body. The ore body was intercepted in the drifting at about 800 ft. from the shaft and was about 200 ft. wide at that point. A crosscut was extended to the east and west property lines along the south boundary of the ore body. This east-west ore body is laid out in areas 80 ft. wide for stoping with pillars 40 ft. wide. With this plan a stope is approximately 80 by 200 ft. and has a pillar on both sides that is approximately 40 by 200 ft. The ore has a height of from 50 to 250 ft. above the elevation of the level, therefore the height of the stopes varies in accordance with the height of the ore body at each location. From the crosscut, two main raises, each 6 by 7 ft., are put up into each 80 ft. stope area (Fig. I). One of the main raises serves as a manway and the other as an ore raise, through which the ore is transferred from the stope to the tramming equipment. The original layout was for scraping of the ore from under the stopes into the ore raises. The ore raise is put halfway (east and west) along the 80-ft. stope area and usually is in iron formation. The manway and ore raise are on approximately 15-ft- centers. These main raises are put up to a height of from 22 to 30 ft. above the level floor, then from the top of the ore raise a scraper drift (8 X 8 ft.) is driven across the width of the ore body, which is in the neighborhood of 200 ft. From the scraper drift, mill raises are put up at 12 ½ -ft. centers, staggered on opposite sides of the drift, and these are extended 23 ft. above the elevation of the scraper-drift floor. The sublevel connecting the top of these mill raises is called a mill "sub." Other sublevels are developed parallel to the scraper and mill subs at 25-ft. vertical intervals above the mill sub. The mill sub and the other subs above the mill sub are known as sublevels or dog drifts, and are 4 ft. wide and 6 ft. high. These dog drifts

THE mineral magnesite, formerly the source of nearly all magnesia, now shares this role with brucite, dolomite, and the world&apos;s natural and artificial brines. The mineral magnesite is the normal carbonate of magnesium, MgCO3, composed when pure of 47.6 pct MgO and 52.4 pct CO2. It is one of the calcite (CaCO3) group of rhombohedra1 car- bonates, which also includes dolomite, CaCO3.MgCO3, and siderite, FeCO3. Magnesite does not form an isomorphous series with calcite or dolomite; consequently, these lime-bearing carbonates commonly present in magnesite deposits are there only as mechanical mixtures. Magnesite and iron carbonates form a continuous isomorphous series and therefore are inseparable mechanically. The variety of magnesite known as breunnerite is an isomorphous mixture of iron and magnesium carbonates. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The former, which includes breunnerite, is often termed spathic magnesite. Crystalline magnesite varies from finely to coarsely crystal- line in texture and has a hardness of 3.5 to 4. The color is white, yellowish, blue-gray to drab, red, pink, black, or mottled. It is seldom found pure but usually contains variable amounts of iron, lime, silica, and sometimes manganese. The color cannot be used as an index of purity. The cryptocrystalline variety is perhaps the more common type but the crystalline variety usually occurs in larger deposits. The amorphous type is fine grained and compact, showing no cleavage. It is usually snow white but sometimes is light to pale orange yellow or buff, owing to impurities. The fracture is conchoidal to uneven and the hardness 3.5 to 5. Silica may be present as inclusions of serpentine, quartz, chalcedony, or other minerals. The lime and iron contents are usually low. In general, amorphous magnesite is somewhat purer than the crystalline variety. The specific gravity of cryptocrystalline magnesite is 2.90 to 3.00. Classification of Experimental Work The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils). c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agent&apos;s. a. A method for quantifying frothing effect. b. Relation between frothing effect and chemical composition. III. Inorganic reagents. a. Methods of studying the effects of these reagents. b. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. Summary of the Origins of Present-day Flotation Practice The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. Patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.&apos; The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when compared with those used today.

Discussion of the paper of J. K. FURST, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in" Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2493 to 2514. W..McA. JOHNSON, New York, N. Y.-On discussing this paper I am open to the criticism of "bringing coals to Newcastle," as I, a zinc man, am bringing new ideas on steel to Pittsburgh. But still the view of an outsider can be valuable to the insider. Any multistage process, where each apparatus operates on its particular part of the work at a high efficiency, constitutes an advance in the state of art. But in multiplicity there can be complication and ensuing loss and inefficiency. The duplex steel process is not the pronounced success which was predicted for it by its adherents, for several of such plants have reverted to plain open-hearth methods. If we regard broadly refining processes, such as the Bessemer, open-hearth, puddling, copper refining, lead cupelling, nickel refining, we find that in general refining processes are intermittent and &apos;concentration processes are continuous. (This generalization I believe to be original with me; it was communicated to Dr. E. F. Roeber, editor, and appeared as an editorial in Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, March, 1905.) Where we desire primarily quality in a metallurgical operation we must put a batch of metal in the furnace, work on it until we get it to the required purity, test it, and take it out; whereas, if we desire primarily quantity we shove ore into a furnace and smelt it as fast as possible, allowing conditions to make a non-uniform product provided only we get tonnage. From general commercial principles, I believe that the weak point of the duplex process is that the operation is not a money maker unless the plant is kept at. 90 to 95 per cent. of its rated capacity, or unless the Bessemerizing is done so often that it is practically continuous. For in some manner the operation should be made continuous and the control on the tonnage should be commercially flexible. The commercial rigidity of having to control purity exactly increases operating costs without a corresponding gain. Conversely, the chief reason for failure of "steel from ore direct" is that it makes a final operation continuous, which should be naturally intermittent.
